Netflix Developing a Bird Box Sequel
Just when you thought it was safe to put away your blindfolds… Netflix is preparing another Bird Box feature. Writer Josh Malerman confirmed as much during an interview with Inverse in which he stated the sequel will focus on the events depicted in his upcoming follow up novel, “Malorie.”
“‘Malorie’ opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends,” Malerman said. “Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that. I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development… Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”

Bird Box was a massive success for Netflix after being viewed by 45,037,125 accounts, which gave it the best (at the time) first 7 days ever for a Netflix movie. Critical reception was mixed with only 63% awarding the Sandra Bullock horror drama a positive review, while just 57% of audiences gave it a thumbs up. Even so, a sequel will likely generate plenty of buzz.
When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they’ll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded.

Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock (Gravity, Crash) leads an all-star cast that includes Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight, The Predator), with Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson (American Crime Story, Ocean’s Eight), and Oscar nominee John Malkovich (In the Line of Fire, Burn After Reading) in the compelling new thriller from Academy Award winner Susanne Bier (In a Better World, The Night Manager). Bier directed the movie from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer (Arrival).
Bird Box was produced by Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, and Clayton Townsend. The feature also stars Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Colson Baker, and BD Wong.
