Jeremy Irons-led spy thriller Munich begins production for Netflix
Coming off of his Emmy-nominated work on HBO’s Watchmen miniseries, Jeremy Irons is diving right back into work as production has begun on Netflix’s adaptation of Robert Harris’ bestselling spy thriller Munich, in which Irons leads an ensemble cast.
Based on Harris’ 2017 novel, the logline for the film reads as follows:
It is Autumn 1938 and Europe stands on the brink of war. Adolf Hitler is preparing to invade Czechoslovakia and Neville Chamberlain’s government desperately seeks a peaceful solution. With the pressure building, Hugh Legat, British civil servant, and Paul von Hartmann, German diplomat, travel to Munich for the emergency Conference. As negotiations begin, the two old friends find themselves at the centre of a web of political subterfuge and very real danger. With the whole world watching, can war be averted and, if so, at what cost?
In addition to Irons, who will star as Chamberlain, the cast for the film is set to include George MacKay (True History of the Kelly Gang) as Hugh Legat, Jannis Niewhöhner (Berlin Station) as Paul Hartman, Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann) as Helen Winter, Liv Lisa Fries (Counterpart) as Lenya, August Diehl (A Hidden Life) as Franz Sauer, Erin Doherty (The Crown) as Pamela Legat and Martin Wuttke as Adolf Hitler, his second time portraying the infamous dictator after Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
“It’s great to see an actor of Jeremy Irons’s stature playing Neville Chamberlain,” Harris said in a statement. “This will be the first time a major movie has gone beyond the cult of Winston Churchill and tried to show Chamberlain in a more sympathetic light.”
The script for the film is being adapted by Ben Power (The Hollow Crown) with Christian Schwochow (The Crown, Bad Banks) set to direct the film and Andrew Eaton (The Crown) and Turbine Studios attached to produce. Production is currently underway in Germany, with plans to also shoot in the United Kingdom and a 2021 release date eyed by Netflix.
