The Mitchells vs. The Machines: Netflix Nabs Global Rights to Lord-Miller’s New Animated Film
Netflix has successfully acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Oscar-winning producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s newest sci-fi comedy animated film titled The Mitchells vs. The Machines from Sony Pictures Animation. This announcement comes after the film’s scheduled October 2020 theatrical release was delayed due to the ongoing pandemic.
“We are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm Netflix has expressed for this movie with this acquisition and grateful to everyone at Sony for making a great picture with us and finding a big way to bring it to audiences,” Lord and Miller said in a statement. “We’re really proud of the film we all made together, plus we understand our subscription fees are waived in perpetuity as part of the deal? We’re not lawyers but it does sound right to us.”

I’m so grateful to all the incredible artists that poured their love and passion into this project to make it a reality, and to everyone at Sony who believed in us and were on board to make a different kind of animated movie.” director and star Mike Rianda said. “I’m so thrilled that everyone at Netflix has been totally in sync with us creatively and are just as excited about the movie as we are! Not only because it’s an original story with a creative visual style that we’re extremely proud of, but also so I can prove to my friends that this five-year journey wasn’t an elaborate delusion on my part.”

The Mitchells vs. The Machines (formerly titled as Connected) is an original animated comedy about an everyday family’s struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world! When Katie Mitchell, a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. Katie and Rick are joined by the rest of the family, including Katie’s wildly positive mom Linda, her quirky little brother Aaron, and the family’s delightfully chubby pug Monchi for the ultimate family road trip.
Suddenly, the Mitchells’ plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones, to appliances, to an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it’s time to take over. With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world!
The voice cast is led by: Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) as Katie Mitchell, Danny McBride (Despicable Me, The Angry Birds Movie) as Rick Mitchell, Maya Rudolph (Big Hero 6) as Linda Mitchell, director Mike Rianda as Aaron. It will also feature the voices of Eric Andre (The Lion King) as tech inventor Mark Bowman and Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Siri-like voice assistant called PAL.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines will be the feature directorial debut of Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) who wrote the screenplay with co-director Jeff Rowe. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) are producing through their Lord Miller Productions banner along with Kurt Albrecht.
