To honor the legacy of beloved filmmaker Lynn Shelton, who passed away in May, Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum, alongside Duplass Brothers Productions, are launching the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant. The $25,000 unrestricted cash grant will be awarded each year to a US-based woman or non-binary filmmaker, age 39 or older, who has yet to direct a narrative feature.
Shelton often spoke of feeling inspired after seeing filmmaker Claire Denis speak at Northwest Film Forum and learning that Denis did not make her first feature until age 40. Shelton went on to make her own first feature film (We Go Way Back) at the age of 39. In the years since, she built a prolific canon of feature and television work and made an indelible mark on the landscape of American cinema.

“This grant seeks to reinforce that great filmmakers can emerge at any age, and to elevate the voices of a segment of the filmmaking community who have precious few resources dedicated to supporting them yet plenty of stories to tell,” explains Megan Griffiths, Shelton’s longtime friend and collaborator, who is working in her capacity as a member of the board of Northwest Film Forum to help establish the grant. “Lynn was 39 when I met her on her first feature, and I watched her grow as an artist and become more certain in her path with every passing year. She wore her ‘late bloomer’ status as a badge of honor and we know she would be thrilled that this grant exists in her name.”
The grant fund was spearheaded by Duplass Brothers Productions, which includes Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, and Mel Eslyn, and has since been bolstered by many others, including Washington-based production company COLOR, Tracy Rector, Eliza Flug, Marc Maron, Joshua Leonard & Alison Pill, Michaela Watkins & Fred Kramer, CB Shamah, Chris & Philip Wohlstetter, and Jennessa & Robert West. It will be stewarded by Northwest Film Forum, one of Shelton’s favorite non-profit organizations and a community film center that supported her in her early years and throughout her career.
“In an industry where women, non-binary, and trans individuals have historically had less success and visibility, hearing Lynn Shelton’s story of coming into film at an older age has been extremely inspiring,” said Vivian Hua, Executive Director of Northwest Film Forum. “The scope of this grant will ensure a positive impact on the lives of future recipients for years to come.”
Mel Eslyn, president of Duplass Brothers Productions, added: “There was an appreciation and an immediacy to the way Lynn approached her film and TV career, which she openly credited to her ‘late start.’ Now finding myself approaching the same age Lynn got started, I find it comical to think we call 39 a ‘late start.’ But the reality is there is just not enough representation of women over a ‘certain age’ in media, in front of, but even more so, behind the camera. We hope that this grant can be a meaningful step towards helping to change that.”
Nominations for the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant are being sought from a national Advisory Committee made up of film programmers, filmmakers, and arts leaders, demonstrating expertise on the current filmmaking landscape and knowledge of emerging filmmakers from around the country. Some of these names are: Beth Barrett (Seattle International Film Festival), Emily Best (Seed & Spark), Effie Brown (Gamechanger Films), Kat Candler (filmmaker), Amy Dotson (Northwest Film Center), Miranda July (filmmaker), Mynette Louie (producer), Leah Meyerhoff (Film Fatales), Lucy Mukerjee (Tribeca Film Festival), Janet Pierson (SXSW Film Festival), Mike Plante (Sundance Film Festival), Rishi Rajani (Hillman Grad), and Tracy Rector (filmmaker/activist), among others. An Award Selection Committee will determine the recipient of the grant. Northwest Film Forum will award the inaugural grant in 2020.

Shelton emerged from her hometown of Seattle to become a major force in American independent cinema and a prolific television director. She was a vibrant, kind, creative human being. Her work drew acclaim for its compassion, humor, unique voice, and wonderful performances. Shelton directed eight features including Humpday (2009), Your Sister’s Sister (2011), Outside In (2018), and last year’s Sword of Trust. Shelton also worked in television, directing memorable episodes of acclaimed series, including Mad Men, GLOW, The Mindy Project, and Little Fires Everywhere.
For those looking to give in her honor, donations to the Shelton/Seal Family Fund for the Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children, or Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum are encouraged.

Nearly a week since Andy Samberg’s latest film Palm Springs made its debut on Hulu, and now IndieWire is bringing word that the sci-fi romantic comedy film has broken a new streaming record on Hulu by earning the biggest opening weekend than any other film on the platform. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that the film had broken a record as it was the most expensive movie deal that came out of Sundance with Hulu and NEON acquiring the film’s distribution rights for $17.5 million.

When carefree Nyles (Andy Samberg) and reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, of each other.
Alongside Golden Globe winner Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, SNL), Palm Springs also stars Cristin Milioti (The Wolf of Wall Street), Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Meredith Hagner (Search Party), Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Tyler Hoechlin (Superman and Lois), and Peter Gallagher (Grace and Frankie).

1925’s The Phantom of the Opera, upon its initial release, adapted a haunting and tragic figure’s story to the big screen in an unbelievable fashion, in large part to actor Lon Chaney’s dedication and artistic genius in the role of The Phantom. Chris’ print thrusts The Phantom to center-stage and shines a spotlight on the incredible costume and makeup work from the film.
Paul’s piece for Frankenstein features a classic movie poster composition, mixing stunning imagery of Dr. Frankenstein’s monster and bold movie credits. Last month, it was announced that the state of California was finally ready to re-open movie theaters with the release of their new COVID-19 industry guidance for Family Entertainment Centers. However, Gov. Gavin Newsom has ultimately decided to indefinitely closed down all movie theaters again in the state as well as other indoor operations including bars, restaurants, zoos and museums. His difficult decision comes after a sudden surge of new COVID-19 cases as California records an alarming number of 8,358 new cases within the past 24 hours.
“This virus is not going away anytime soon,” Newsome said in yesterday’s press conference (via Variety). “I hope all of us recognize that if we are still connected to some notion that somehow when it gets warm, it’s going to go away, or somehow it’s going to take summer months or weekends off, this virus has done neither. It’s incumbent on all of us to recognize, soberly, that COVID-19 is not going away anytime soon until there is a vaccine and/or an effective therapy.”
NEW: As #COVID19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise, 30 counties will now be required to CLOSE INDOOR OPERATIONS for:
-Fitness Centers
-Places of Worship
-Offices for Non-Critical Sectors
-Personal Care Services
-Hair Salons and Barbershops
-Malls— Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) July 13, 2020

This newest setback for theater chains will definitely affect upcoming new movie releases that are scheduled in August. It has also put high-profile films like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, Disney’s Mulan, and 20th Century Studios’ New Mutants back in dangerous spots as all films might be facing another potential delay.
ComingSoon.net recommends all readers comply with CDC guidelines and remain as isolated as possible during this urgent time.

Just when you thought it was safe to put away your blindfolds… Netflix is preparing another Bird Box feature. Writer Josh Malerman confirmed as much during an interview with Inverse in which he stated the sequel will focus on the events depicted in his upcoming follow up novel, “Malorie.”
“‘Malorie’ opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends,” Malerman said. “Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that. I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development… Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”
RELATED: Paramount Network Axes Sexy Beast Prequel Series
Bird Box was a massive success for Netflix after being viewed by 45,037,125 accounts, which gave it the best (at the time) first 7 days ever for a Netflix movie. Critical reception was mixed with only 63% awarding the Sandra Bullock horror drama a positive review, while just 57% of audiences gave it a thumbs up. Even so, a sequel will likely generate plenty of buzz.
When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they’ll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded.

Bier directed the movie from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer (Arrival).
