Distant: Naomi Scott joins Anthony Ramos in new sci-fi comedy film

According to Deadline, Aladdin star Naomi Scott has been tapped to join Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos in Amblin Partner’s forthcoming sci-fi comedy film titled Distant. Scott is set to take on the film’s female lead as she replaces Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), who has exited from the project due to scheduling conflicts caused by the ongoing pandemic.

Scott gained recognition for her performance as Princess Jasmine in Disney’s blockbuster live-action Aladdin film which had grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Her other notable film credits include: Lemonade Mouth, Power Rangers and Charlie’s Angels.

Distant will follow the story of an asteroid miner who crash lands on an alien planet and must contend with the challenges of the environment and make his way across the dangerous terrain to find the only other survivor, a woman trapped in her escape pod.

The film will be directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon (Office Christmas Party) from a screenplay being written by Spenser Cohen (Extinction).  Speck and Gordon have worked together for years, co-directing the hit Will Ferrell and Jon Heder-starring ice-skating comedy Blades of Glory and the ensemble Christmas party comedy Office Christmas Comedy, as well as helming two episodes of Netflix’s Will Arnett-led Flaked.
