An enthralling portrait of Hollywood and the dark side of fame, the acclaimed and enduring classic Sunset Boulevard celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Directed and co-written by the legendary Billy Wilder, Sunset Boulevard was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won three for Best Art Direction, Best Music and Best Writing.

Originally released in August of 1950, Sunset Boulevard was among the first films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry and is in the top 20 of the AFI’s Greatest American Films of All Time.

Gloria Swanson and William Holden give riveting performances as two of the silver screen’s most memorable characters: the aging silent film queen Norma Desmond and struggling young screenwriter Joe Gillis. The bizarre and twisted story that unfolds between them is a brilliant combination of noir, black comedy and character study, as well as a scathing and pitch-black commentary on Hollywood.

Sunset Boulevard also features masterful performances by Erich von Stroheim as Desmond’s ex-husband/butler and Nancy Olson as the wholesome script reader who falls for Gillis, along with cameo appearances by director Cecil B. DeMille, gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, and silent film actor Buster Keaton.

CS Soapbox: Will We Ever See A Live-Action Darth Maul Again?

CS Soapbox: Will We Ever See A Live-Action Darth Maul Again?

CS Soapbox: Will We Ever See A Live-Action Darth Maul Again?

Ever since the Sith Lord played two-on-one with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, Star Wars fans have wanted more Darth Maul. While he didn’t say much in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, his acrobatic style, unique appearance, and iconic double-bladed lightsaber have made him one of the franchise’s most memorable characters. George Lucas had likely no intention of bringing Maul back after fell in pieces down Naboo’s planet core; however, thanks to his popularity, Maul has endured well beyond his initial demise.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars revealed (to the delight of fans) that Maul had survived his injuries from his duel with Obi-Wan. Focusing on his hatred for Obi-Wan, the former Sith Lord (voiced by Sam Witwer) was able to over his mental and physical limitations, ultimately regains his full strength. Lucasfilm’s animated series not only fleshed out Maul’s backstory, giving him much to say and do, but made him a pivotal character as he attempted to dominate the galaxy with the Shadow Collective while simultaneously seeking revenge against the man who dismantled him and the master who abandoned him.

RELATED: CS Soapbox: Why Star Wars Needs Taika Waititi

Don’t get us wrong. Star Wars and Maul’s animated exploits have been great, but nothing compares to the franchise’s bread and butter: live-action. Aside from his live-action appearance in Episode I, Ray Park has only played Maul one other time, in Solo: A Star Wars Story. That film takes place roughly 8-10 years after the Clone Wars and follows a young Han Solo before Star Wars: A New Hope. Solo’s love interest in the film, Qi’ra is a lieutenant in Crimson Dawn—an emerging crime syndicate. At the end of the film, Park makes a brief cameo as Maul, who is revealed to be a figurehead of Crimson Dawn.

Solo: A Star Wars Story set Park’s Maul up for future live-action appearances, having ordered Qi’ra to meet him on his home planet,of Dathomir so that they may work “more closely.” Unfortunately, the film’s lackluster performance has single-handedly reshaped Star Wars’ cinematic future. Instead of risking franchise fatigue, with multiple films retreading events with/around the Skywalker saga, the success of The Mandalorian has Disney/Lucasfilm focusing on the small screen, leaving the big-screen future uncertain (the High Republic?). Any planned sequel to Solo: Star Wars Story has since been scrapped.

RELATED: Star Wars: The Bad Batch Lucasfilm Animated Series Ordered at Disney+

The interesting thing about all this is that Solo: Star Wars Story, despite all its behind-the-scenes drama, still did well enough with critics and has since become an underground hit. We don’t hate it. At all. Fans want more. Rumors have recently been floating around that there might be a Disney+ spin-off series starring Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. While these rumors have since been debunked, the hype surrounding them will affect Disney’s game plan moving forward. Their streaming service has many TV shows in the works (some announced, others yet-to-be).

The events of the animation, Star Wars Rebels, elaborates on Maul’s time between Solo: A Star Wars Story and Episode IV. The character’s story ends following one last confrontation with his arch-enemy—Maul dies in the arms of Obi-Wan (aw). This doesn’t mean we won’t see him again. If the animations have proven anything, it’s that the intermingling of Obi-Wan and Maul’s stories is both an effective and reverenced aspect of the mythology. That said, Maul will almost certainly show up in upcoming Star Wars: The Bad Batch animation (Star Wars: The Clone Wars spin-off) but, more importantly, Disney+’s live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

RELATED: Joby Harold Tapped as New Writer for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi Series

The Star Wars spin-off will see Ewan McGregor reprise his role of Obi-Wan 8 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The series will presumably take place on Tatooine (the death place of Maul)—where “Ben Kenobi” watching over Luke Skywalker and his family. However, the production is reportedly looking to cast a young Leia Organa who resides on Alderaan with her father, Senator Bail Organa. Obi-Wan and Leia’s father were allies in the Clone Wars; therefore, the new casting reports imply that Obi-Wan will be spending time in places other than Tatooine throughout the show. Given Maul’s activity in the galaxy at this time (causing mayhem), it’s not a stretch to assume Obi-Wan will once again cross paths with Maul (especially if the former chooses to aid the rebellion).

The possibilities for seeing a live-action Darth Maul again are endless. Disney can pretty much place him anywhere between the events of Episode III and IV (while adhering to canon). In addition to the Obi-Wan Kenobi series (and all the unconfirmed ones), a Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series following Diego Luna’s Cassin Andor is also in the works.

The studio loves playing around with the aforementioned period. A time frame where Maul is very much alive and relevant. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Skywalker saga on the big screen, but that timeline is thriving on the small screen. Odds are we will see a live-action Darth Maul again on Disney+. Whether Ray Park will reprise his role—given recent controversies—or Sam Witwer takes over his live-action duties, remains to be seen.

The 1987 comedy was directed by Leonard Nimoy and starred Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson as New York bachelors who find themselves caring, and subsequently falling for, an infant. Based on the 1985 French film Trois Hommes et un Couffin (Three Men and a Cradle) by Coline Serreau, Nimoy’s take on the classic tale was written by James Orr and Jim Cruickshank. The movie was a massive hit for Disney, becoming the studio’s first live-action movie to cross $100 million at the domestic box office.

Three Men and a Baby was followed-up by a sequel in the 1990 film Three Men and a Little Lady, directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Charlie Peters from a story by Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon.

Will Reichel wrote the screenplay for the upcoming remake starring Efron and a search for a director is currently underway.

The Secret Garden Review:

Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel The Secret Garden has been a favorite property for the film and TV industry to bring to life on screen for multiple generations since its 1911 publishing and while most have seen plenty of positive reception, none have really sought to separate themselves from the source material or offer unique variants from previous iterations and while Marc Munden’s isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, it proves to be a nice twist on the story.

Based on the classic novel of the same name written by Burnett, the story is set in England during a new time period in 1947 and follows Mary Lennox, an English girl raised in India who, after the death of her parents due to disease, goes to live with her uncle on an isolated moor. Initially distraught over the loss of her parents, change in lifestyle and strict caretakers, Mary discovers a magical garden on her uncle’s estate that brings a bright light to the dark house.

One of the nicest things about the latest adaptation of Burnett’s novel is that though it changes a number of plot points from its story, they all not only still remain in the spirit of the source work but also help to elevate some of its themes of loss, growth and growing up. The evolution of Mary and her connection to the titular location is told in a relatively compelling fashion thanks to a mind-melding blend of flashback and present-day dialogue that intersect with one another much like Mike Flanagan’s Oculus. Though it may prove to be a bit convoluted for some younger viewers, this story structure really feels like a much more imaginative way to tell the story than a straightforward adaptation and is further bolstered by Munden’s beautiful direction. With a combination of artful editing, exquisite color palettes and fairly good CGI, every shot of this film is certainly a work of art to behold.

As Mary runs around the depressing halls of the dilapidated mansion and the expansive lands surrounding it, Thorne’s script finds a way to somewhat stay true to the source material in seeing her be a spoiled and obstinate terror on the moor but it also provides two of the film’s major flaws: its pacing and frustrating deviations from the novel. One of the most important aspects of the novel was Mary’s friendship with her sickly cousin Colin and village boy Dickon and how they help each other evolve over the course of the story, but the film takes its sweet time even letting audiences and Mary know that these two exist in the world and when we do meet the former, he’s quite different from his literary origin.

A lot of Colin’s development feels too in line with Mary’s on screen in comparison to that of the novel which, though may work for the different take on the story on screen, feels a little too lackluster and formulaic for the coming-of-age genre. With both being portrayed as good-natured kids who only need a bright spot in their life to overcome their loneliness and grief rather than actually flawed beings who learn to change through spending time with one another and in the garden, it becomes a little too familiar of a story and loses some of the deeper emotional work that was present in the novel.

But, with all of that being said, the emotional development seen on screen still does prove to be remarkably effective, mostly thanks to the incredible performance from young Dixie Egerickx in the lead role as well as the strong performances from Colin Firth, Amir Wilson and Edan Hayhurst. Egerickx brings this different take on Mary to life wonderfully, finding a way to brilliantly transition between the emotionally hardened and bitter nature of her character to the imaginative and hopeful side of her.

Though its pacing frequently proves to be frustratingly tepid, especially given its 100-minute runtime, and some of its deviations from the source material prove to be odd and formulaic drivel, The Secret Garden still hones in on much of the spirit of Burnett’s iconic novel and proves to be a moving and charming adaptation with a few nice twists up its sleeves.

Disney Reportedly Halts Production of 4K Physical Home Media

Disney is looking to make some major changes with its catalogue as sources report that the House of Mouse is halting production on all 4K Ultra HD physical media editions of titles, including the entire 20th Century Studios library, according to Slash Film.

RELATED: Hamilton Effect: Disney+ App Downloads Up 72% Over the Weekend

In a report from The Digital Bits, it’s stated that Disney “does not have any plans” for new 4K Ultra HD releases for their newly acquired catalogue of titles in an effort to help build up the still-burgeoning streaming service Disney+, but that Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel projects will still be receiving these editions.

The news may come as a bit of a shock to fans of collecting physical media, especially given the entire 20th Century Fox library will not be giving new 4K releases as many of them have yet to receive one, namely classics such as Fight Club, The French Connection, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Sources do suggest, however, that Disney may offer the licenses to its “less-demanded” catalogue titles to indie distribution companies such as Criterion, Arrow or Shout! Factory.

Despite this, however, the studio is eying potential 4K issues of James Cameron’s Aliens, Avatar, True Lies and The Abyss given the filmmaker is currently working on sequels to the sci-fi adventure franchise for Disney, for which the House of Mouse is investing $1 billion across four films.

Aside from new release titles, the only upcoming 4K UHD releases scheduled from Disney are Fox’s Home Alone and the cult classic Disney Halloween pic Hocus Pocus, both of which will hit shelves in September, though no official word has been given from Disney regarding their plans for new 4K editions.

Emmy winner Judd Apatow directs, along with longtime collaborator Michael Bonfiglio, with Emmy winner Joe Beshenkovsky editing, reuniting the key creative team behind HBO’s Emmy-winning documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, which was directed by Apatow. Three-time Emmy winner Teddy Leifer executive produces.

“George Carlin’s work becomes more relevant every day,” said Apatow. “It is an honor to be given the opportunity to tell the story of his life and work.”

George Carlin (1937-2008), a celebrated stand-up comedian, actor, social critic, and author, was best known for his irreverent, dark comedy and reflections on American society. Carlin was once dubbed “the dean of counterculture comedians” and has been regarded as one of the most influential stand-up comics of his time. “Having been the public keeper of my dad’s legacy these last 12 years, I’ve dreamt of the right people appearing at the right moment to give the documentary telling of my father’s story what it deserves – an honoring of his comedic genius and unique cultural impact, while not shying away from his personal struggles and humanity,” said Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin. “I’m thrilled that Jerry Hamza and I have teamed up with Judd Apatow, Michael Bonfiglio, and Teddy Leifer to make it happen now. May the comedy gods smile up at us as we endeavor to share my dad’s heart, mind, and genius with the world.”

I’m thrilled that we will once again be working with our wonderful colleagues at HBO and that Judd Apatow, another comedy giant, is directing.”
