Joining Winter and Reeves are Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical) as Bill and Ted’s daughters, respectively. The film will also feature Anthony Carrigan (Barry), Jillian Bell (Workaholics), Kristen Schall (Toy Story 4), Holland Taylor (Gloria Bell), Kid Cudi, Erinn Hayes, Jayma Mays, and Beck Bennet. William Sadler is also set to reprise his role as Death alongside franchise returners Amy Stoch and Hal London Jr. Newcomer.

ComingSoon.net: The Bill & Ted franchise is obviously an iconic one and one that seems to be so fun to be a part of. But what was it about Face the Music that really interested you both in wanting to join? 

Erinn Hayes: Well, I mean, listen, I loved these movies when they came out. I just absolutely did. I watched them multiple times. My brother and I were obsessed with them. And then, I honestly thought there was no chance. Like this audition came around and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cute. They’ll see me for this, but they’re definitely going to get somebody who’s like, legitimately famous for this.’ And then, I got the part and I was like, wait, what? Like I really get to be in Bill & Ted? This is one of the coolest things to ever happen to me. So just to be a part of whatever it turns out to be, this next iteration of these iconic movies was very exciting for myself.

Jayma Mays: Well, yeah, and the same for me. I actually remember the audition coming in. And before they even had — they were like, there’s this audition for Bill & Ted, I was like, yes, yes. Going in, whatever it is, going in, I will play the phone booth if that part is available. Whatever you’ve got.

Hayes: I would love to see your audition for the phone booth.

Mays: You know what? That part was already cast. And they were like, ah, damn it… And I had a great fit for it. But no, I was super excited. And then it was a similar thing. I told my husband, I was like, there is this audition for Bill & Ted. He’s like, ‘Yes, yes, you’re going in, you’re going in. I will pay them to let you be a part of this movie.’

CS: That’s awesome. So then, one of the nice things, too, about this one is that Joanna and Elizabeth, they both get more expanded and developed roles in comparison to the past. What was that like for you seeing this further evolution of these two characters in comparison to their predecessors?

Hayes: Yeah, you don’t know much about them in the previous movies. And we actually got a chance. Like we get on set and we went into this like, three or four hour like, script session, where we talked about these therapy scenes and about the relationship and what long-term relationships are, what they’ve been doing for all these years and how they view each other as sisters and their spouses and where they were at. So it was really fun to like, jump in like that. I thought we’d just show up and get on the set and maybe rehearse it a couple of times and do it, but we got to really work on it and develop it, which was a wonderful time.

Mays: Yeah, I think they were very inclusive. Like way more so than most jobs I’ve ever had.

Hayes: Yeah.

Mays: And I felt very lucky to be a part of that kind of discussion of kind of who we want these people to be. And actually, I had a really good time working with Erinn, you, Erinn, as–

Hayes: Me Erinn?

Mays: You, Erinn. Because I always feel like we always wanted to make sure like, you know, they’re sisters and there were these ideas of maybe finishing each other’s sentences and just kind of being one with each other, in a way, because there’s all these couplets on set of Bill and Ted and then the daughters. And then we felt like a couple as well, in a way. So it was a lot of fun to work on together.

Hayes: Yeah, and we’re in everything together, you know?

Mays: Yeah, right.

Hayes: So we had to be, especially with the guys, with their characters having been on this journey for a long time and them being such a duo, it was like, oh, well it does make sense that we [become] this duo. You know, we’ve gone through all these different times. We were back in the 16th century and now we’re doing this new thing together. So these two people that have been learning together for all these years.

Mays: That’s right. And princesses. I do like to just keep mentioning that. We are princesses. At the fore of the movie, we are princesses, yeah.

Hayes: And we do mean in the royal we.

CS: So then in developing these further expansions of their personas, what would each of you say were your biggest creative challenges in bringing your characters to life?

Mays: Well, probably just that, what we were just talking about. I think the fact that that’s kind of all we knew about them in the first two, right, is that they had been found by Bill and Ted back in like, medieval times and then they fell in love and brought them to the future. So we didn’t know much about them. So I think that was probably the trickiest part to make it feel like we were families, right, and that we had these daughters that are in their late teens, early 20’s. And how do we make sure that that feels real, right, and that we’ve experienced this life together as two families, very closely-knit families, and what’s that like, and how does that kind of show on screen? And then the scenes that were given, how do we give them that bit of depth?

Hayes: Yeah, just to create the past with the in-between times in these last two movies because truly, that is what we know. We know they came, they traveled through time, they fell in love, they got married. They were in the band briefly. And then, what did they do, you know, and how do we make that seem real? I do wish — while you’re describing that, Jayma, I really have this wish that there was a moment like we could’ve seen all six, you know, six of them at home in kind of one big like, unit, how they would’ve all worked together. But it was that kind of connectedness to where it’s almost like one marriage, one family with both of our families together and how do we — that was a challenge. Like how do we convey that? But we would probably be just almost as close to each other’s husbands as we are to each other and to our own husbands and to the other child —

Mays: The children, yeah.

Hayes: It was tricky. And it’s such a fast-paced movie, too. You don’t have a lot of time to push that, to build that in.

Mays: That’s right. And it’s a complicated time travel subject.

CS: Well, since you mentioned that you two time travel a lot throughout the film, I noticed that there were moments where you were traveling and we didn’t get to see your travels. Do you think we’ll ever be able to see those in the future, be it a special feature or a spin-off film, even?

Mays: We clearly need like a “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern”.

Hayes: Well, yeah, Liz and Jo, they —

Mays: My mom will start a petition and that’ll go really well online, I’m sure.

Hayes: It was really complex though, to figure out when we would be popping back in. We were talking to Dean [Parisot], the director, we’re like, what have we seen. And they’re like, multitudes. You’ve seen multitudes of things… So we had to like, kind of converse between the two of us like, all right, what did we just see, you know?

Mays: Yeah, how bad was it?

Hayes: What was that last thing we just saw, to try to convey some sense of that and bring it into when we pop in, because we don’t see it. That’s right.

CS: Got you. Okay, well, fingers crossed for that petition to work. What was it like, then, building the rapport with each other as well as the rest of the cast to make that family and friendly bond feel real on screen?

Hayes: Well, that was probably the easiest thing.

Mays: Yeah, I feel the same.

Hayes: We had like, a giggly good time together.

Mays: Yeah, it felt super easy. Like, and I was going to say, just meeting Erinn on that part…I met her and we had a little chance to chat. We had time to like, just hang out for probably 30 minutes or something on our own. And I remember just being like, oh, I like this girl, like this is going to be fun and easy and like, I think we’re both on the same page like maybe use a sense of humor. And what we’re saying the film or the writing could be like sisters. So that part, you’re right. It’s all super easy.

And actually, the same with the daughters. They’re such cool, interesting, talented women. I was like, wow, where did they find these amazing women? And I remember at the table read, they started doing their thing. Because it’s like, who are these girls going to be and how are they going to portray these characters? And they started doing the read through and it was like, oh, they’re incredible. Like I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. And then, like Alex, for instance, when I landed in New Orleans, I had, I think it was an email, I can’t remember, a voicemail. Alex was like, do you just want to meet up for a coffee and meet? We’re doing this thing together. And so, everyone was just so kind and again, inclusive and wanted to get along and just wanted to make a good film and have fun. That all had just kind of — yeah, was incredibly smooth.

CS: That’s awesome.

Hayes: I would agree.

CS Interview: Blu Hunt & Henry Zaga Talk The New Mutants

CS Interview: Blu Hunt & Henry Zaga Talk The New Mutants

ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to chat with The New Mutants stars Blu Hunt (The Originals, Another Life) and Henry Zaga (The Stand, Looking for Alaska) about 20th Century Studios’ newly released horror thriller, which is now playing in theaters!

Directed by Josh Boone, The New Mutants finally releasing in theaters after being delayed and continuously pushed back is a “relief” to Hunt, who was more than ready for people to see the film and “for the waiting to be done” for the star’s “own piece of mind.” The project became a labor of love for the group, one that came with its own pressures for the largely younger cast.

“It was overwhelming, it felt like a lot,” said Hunt. “To be 21 years old and to have never really acted in film in my entire life was definitely a lot of pressure. It also felt like an incredible honor and I couldn’t believe I was there most of the time. Every day I woke up there it didn’t feel real, and I don’t know if it feels real yet. I just need the movie to come out for it to really happen.”

Being able to spend so much time together on and off set seemingly helped the young cast to not only bond but deal with the pressures of filming the Marvel movie. “We got really close really fast,” Zaga recalled. “Before Alice [Braga] arrived it was just the five of us for three weeks rehearsing with Josh. We were kind of in the middle of nowhere. Sorry, Norwood, Massachusetts, you’re lovely but there’s nothing really to do unless you’re really willing to. We’re just hanging out in a hotel hallway with one room next to each other, running lines together. We even watched Game of Thrones together, which was really strange.”

Hunt agrees that the main cast starting two weeks early “really helped” them, especially since they lived in the same hotel and were able to do many rehearsals: “We were bonding from the moment we showed up. Josh kept such a relaxed set. It was so chill, and when I was feeling the pressure and wanted to implode he kept being so easygoing that it was really easy for us to get along and take care of each other.”

Diving into their characters, Hunt, who plays Danielle Moonstar in the feature, feels that “Dani is pretty much straight from the comics,” noting that the differences between the character’s source material and the big-screen adaptation are “really minor.”

“Obviously in the comic Dani has a symbolic suicide, and that doesn’t happen in the movie,” said Hunt. “The first draft of the comic she did do it still, it was almost frame-for-frame the comic book, when she faces the bear in the snow. We changed it, and the way it is now is just as good, just different from the comic. She’s the same tough leader. It’s her really finding her voice.”

Zaga loved how adamant Boone was about casting the “roles really well,”  including having proper representation on and off screen: “I am biracial Brazilian Latino guy. In LA sometimes you go, ‘Wait, there isn’t a Latino role, so…’ It was always a thing to me that I wanted to represent my country in a meaningful way, and these kids who are so in love with the X-Men universe… I see the outpouring of love on social media. I’m right there with you, and sometimes when I watch a Brazilian role not being played by a Brazilian guy I’m like, ‘That’s not really Portuguese.’

“Josh really wanted a Native American girl to play Dani, and these minority roles are really important to build this movie. This movie is about outcasts from different places in the world going through a self-discovery journey. It was an honor, to say the least.”

Zaga, who plays Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot in the movie, enjoyed bringing the character to life, including showcasing Roberto’s mutant abilities.

“My character absorbs and emanates solar energy in the form of strength, so he becomes incredibly strong,” said Zaga. “Later on he might learn new tricks too. I’ve never seen anything like Sunspot in the way we’ve done in our movie, or any of the Marvel movies. He has his own center of gravity and things floating around him, and lights up from inside out. It’s not just igniting. It’s total solar lava wonder!”

20th Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents The New Mutants, an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thronesgen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Cannonball.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

Five Eyes: Jason Statham & Guy Ritchie Reunite for International Spy Action Thriller

Following their collaborations with the hit film The Gentlemen and the upcoming Wrath of Man (formerly known as Cash Truck), Miramax is re-teaming with acclaimed director Guy Ritchie for the globetrotting spy thriller Five Eyes, starring Jason Statham (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, The Meg, Spy). Ritchie will direct and produce from a screenplay written by Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies (The Gentlemen, Wrath of Man), with revisions by Ritchie.

In the film, MI6 guns-and-steel agent Orson Fortune (Statham) is recruited by global intelligence alliance ‘Five Eyes’ to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. Reluctantly paired with CIA high-tech expert Sarah Fidel, Fortune sets off on a globe-trotting mission where he will have to use all of his charm, ingenuity, and stealth to track down and infiltrate billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds.

Principal photography is set to commence in Europe in October 2020.

Five Eyes will be produced by Bill Block for Miramax, which is also fully financing the film. Ivan Atkinson also serves as producer.

“Guy Ritchie’s Five Eyes is his next collaboration with Jason, commencing with Snatch, following the upcoming film, Wrath of Man and the global success of The Gentlemen, in partnership with STXfilms,” says Miramax CEO Bill Block. “We’re excited to be reunited with the STX team, as well as Ritchie and Statham whose undeniable chemistry, philosophy, and talent will surely attract a massive appeal from audiences worldwide.”

“Jason is a global box office heavyweight, and when teamed with Guy Ritchie, that’s an irresistible combination,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of the STXfilms Motion Picture Group. “It’s a thrill to be back in business with Guy, Bill and the team at Miramax after our shared success on The Gentlemen and we believe Five Eyes is the kind of film our partners overseas will love as much as we do.”

STXfilms has secured worldwide distribution rights to the film. STX will distribute directly in the US, UK, and Ireland, and STXinternational will launch sales to foreign buyers at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. STXfilms had great success earlier this year with Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, which grossed $115 million at the worldwide box office.

Earlier today it was reported that Matt Reeves’ The Batman temporarily halted production in the UK after a member of production reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. Now Vanity Fair is reporting that the individual in question is in fact the film’s star, Robert Pattinson, after confirming with highly placed sources. Warner Bros. Pictures and Pattinson’s representation have yet to officially confirm that the new Bruce Wayne/Batman performer is sick, but it would explain why the production was forced to shut down entirely.

Filming on the highly-anticipated movie had just resumed three days ago after pausing for over five months. This along with yesterday’s revelation that Dwayne Johnson had contracted the virus is yet another reminder that the coronavirus is an insidious disease ambivalent to race, wealth or stature. We recommend our readers heed warning signs like this and not open themselves up to unnecessary risk until a proper vaccine can be dispersed.

“A member of The Batman production has tested positive for Covid-19,” said Warner Bros. in a statement, “and is isolating in accordance with established protocols. Filming is temporarily paused.”

Starring alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman/Bruce Wayne is Zoë Kravitz (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of GrindelwaldMad Max: Fury Road) as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano (Love & Mercy12 Years a Slave) as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright (the Hunger Games films) as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro (the Transformers films) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent SevenBlack Mass) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis (the Planet of the Apes films, Black Panther) as Alfred; and Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemDumbo) as Oswald Cobblepot. Twins Max and Charlie Carver have also joined the movie in “sizable roles.”

During DC FanDome, Reeves confirmed the movie will focus on Bruce Wayne’s second year as Batman, and, per Walter Hamada, that the film is set in a different universe separate from the Justice League DCEU characters. Reeves also revealed that the movie is a detective story that follows a series of murders that open up the history of corruption in Gotham and how Bruce’s family is linked.

Reeves and Dylan Clark (the Planet of the Apes films) are producing the film, with Simon Emanuel, Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, and Chantal Nong Vo serving as executive producers.

After having the opportunity of successfully adapting two of Stephen King’s acclaimed novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, it seems like horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan would like to work again on another film adaptation from King’s wide and rich bibliography. During the recent Fantasia International Film Festival (via Syfy Wire), when asked about his dream project, the 42-year-old director revealed that he would love to have the chance to take on King’s The Dark Tower novel series which has proven to be a difficult piece to adapt to the screen.

“I’ve got the answer that most Stephen King fans are going to have,” Flanagan said. “The Dark Tower is forever going to be the story I wish I could tell. That would be the Holy Grail. I mean, talk about an adaptation challenge… So many very talented people have poured so much time and heart and soul and blood, sweat, and tears trying to crack that.” 

Described as a sci-fi western horror story, The Dark Tower novel series is consisting of eight books titled The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands, Wizard and Glass, The Little Sisters of Eluria, Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, and The Dark Tower which were published from 1982-2004. It also spawned a short story titled The Wind Through the Keyhole which released in 2012.

After two failed attempts from J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard, Sony Pictures was finally able to greenlight a film adaptation which hailed from Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel. However, despite boasting Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba as its leads, the 2017 film had still earned negative reviews and was a box office disappointment. In 2018, Amazon Studios acquired the rights to the novels and was planning to develop it into a TV series. However, earlier this year, they ultimately decided to cancel the project.

Mike Flanagan previously dipped his toe into the world of King with the 2017 adaptation of his 1992 novel Gerald’s Game for Netflix, which received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and continued with the big-screen adaptation of the 2013 sequel to The ShiningDoctor Sleep, which despite receiving strong reviews was considered a box office disappointment, grossing only $72.3 million on a $45 million budget, squashing follow-up plans.

Paramount Pictures will release a new edit and restoration of Francis Ford Coppola’s final film in his epic Godfather trilogy entitled Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. This new version of The Godfather: Part III achieves director/screenwriter Coppola and screenwriter Puzo’s original vision for the finale, which has been meticulously restored for the finest presentation of the Corleone saga’s last chapter.

Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone will have a limited theatrical release in December, followed by availability on Digital home entertainment platforms and on disc.

“‘Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone’ is an acknowledgment of Mario’s and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became ‘The Godfather: Part III,’” said Coppola. “For this version of the finale, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, shots, and music cues. With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Godfather: Part II’ and I’m thankful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to revisit it.”

Coppola’s masterful film adaptation of Puzo’s novel chronicles the rise and fall of the Corleone family and the saga is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest in cinematic history. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, The Godfather: Part III was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film follows Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), now in his 60s, as he seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire.

Coppola and his production company American Zoetrope worked from a 4K scan of the original negative to undertake a painstaking, frame-by-frame restoration of both the new Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone and the original The Godfather: Part III.

In order to create the best presentation possible, Zoetrope and Paramount’s restoration team began by searching for over 50 original takes to replace lower resolution opticals in the original negative. This process took more than six months and involved sifting through 300 cartons of negative. American Zoetrope worked diligently to repair scratches, stains, and other anomalies that could not be addressed previously due to technology constraints, while enhancements were made to the original 5.1 audio mix. These thorough restoration efforts were not immune to the coronavirus pandemic: midway through the project, all work—even the search for the negative—shifted to the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles and was completed by Zoetrope and Paramount remotely.

“Mr. Coppola oversaw every aspect of the restoration while working on the new edit, ensuring that the film not only looks and sounds pristine but also meets his personal standards and directorial vision,” said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives.

The world was rocked to its core six years ago at the news of Robin Williams’ death and now filmmaker Tylor Norwood seeks to find the answers from the iconic comedian’s final days in the documentary Robin’s Wish, centering on the story of what really happened to one of the greatest entertainers of all time — and what his mind was fighting.

Women In The Castle: Daisy Ridley, Kristin Scott Thomas & Nina Hoss to Star in World War II Drama

According to Deadline, Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley, Nina Hoss (HomelandPhoenix) and Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) have been tapped for the leading roles in Jane Anderson’s upcoming film adaptation of author Jessica Shattuck’s 2017 best-selling novel titled Women In The Castle. The project hails from the creative team behind the 2017 acclaimed drama film The Wife.

“One of Jane’s great talents is to reveal the inner emotional lives of women and in gifting those revelations to actresses, allowing them to deliver award-winning, timelessly memorable performances. And in Kristin, Daisy, and Nina we have the cast to do exactly that.” producer Rosalie Swedlin said in a statement.

Set during and after World War II, Women In The Castle follows the story of three German women, who are the widows of the conspirators involved in an assassination attempt on Hitler. The film will explore how each of them deals with the fallout of her personal life and the devastation around her differently.

The film adaptation will be written and directed by Jane Anderson, who won two Emmy awards for her work in HBO’s limited series Olive Kitteridge. It will be produced by Anonymous Content’s Rosalie Swedlin, Doreen Wilcox Little and Michael Scheel with Embankment serving as executive producers.

Ridley gained worldwide recognition for becoming the new lead for the Lucasfilm’s Star Wars sequel trilogy. She last portrayed the role of Rey in last year’s The Rise of Skywalker.

Scott Thomas is best known for her critically-acclaimed roles in the 1994 romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral and the 1996 romance drama The English Patient opposite Ralph Fiennes, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

The Batman UK Filming Halted After Crew Member Tests Positive for COVID-19

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has temporarily halted production in the UK after a member of production reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, according to Deadline. Filming on the highly-anticipated movie had just resumed three days ago after pausing for over five months.

“A member of The Batman production has tested positive for Covid-19,” said Warner Bros. in a statement, “and is isolating in accordance with established protocols. Filming is temporarily paused.” 

Starring alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman/Bruce Wayne is Zoë Kravitz (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of GrindelwaldMad Max: Fury Road) as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano (Love & Mercy12 Years a Slave) as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright (the Hunger Games films) as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro (the Transformers films) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent SevenBlack Mass) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis (the Planet of the Apes films, Black Panther) as Alfred; and Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemDumbo) as Oswald Cobblepot. Twins Max and Charlie Carver have also joined the movie in “sizable roles.”

During DC FanDome, Reeves confirmed the movie will focus on Bruce Wayne’s second year as Batman, and, per Walter Hamada, that the film is set in a different universe separate from the Justice League DCEU characters. Reeves also revealed that the movie is a detective story that follows a series of murders that open up the history of corruption in Gotham and how Bruce’s family is linked.

Reeves and Dylan Clark (the Planet of the Apes films) are producing the film, with Simon Emanuel, Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, and Chantal Nong Vo serving as executive producers.

The Batman opens in theaters on October 1, 2021.

Ahead of Army of the Dead‘s 2021 release, Netflix is already starting to expand Zack Snyder’s newest zombie universe as they officially commissioned the production of two new spinoff projects in form of an untitled multi-language prequel film and an original anime series titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation. It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.” Snyder said in a statement. (via The Futon Critic)

The untitled prequel will be directed by and star Grimme Award winner Matthias Schweighöfer and will follow his Army of the Dead character “Ludwig Dieter”. The movie will be produced out of Germany. The film will be produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, and Wesley Coller of The Stone Quarry and Matthias Schweighöfer and Dan Maag of PANTALEON Films.

 Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas will chronicle the origin story of Scott (Dave Bautista) and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak. Zack Snyder will direct 2 episodes of the anime series. Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and upcoming Netflix Original Anime Series Trese) will be showrunning as well as directing 2 episodes of the series.

The series will be Executive Produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Wesley Coller from The Stone Quarry alongside Jay Olivia and Shay Hatten. Bautista, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick, and Ella Purnell will reprise their roles in the anime series.

Written by Joby Harold and Shay Hatten from a story by Snyder, Army of the Dead will follow the story of a man who recruits a group of mercenaries to pull off the ultimate heist amidst a zombie apocalypse. It is consists of an ensemble cast, including Dave Bautista (Stuber), Omari Hardwick (Kick-Ass), Tig Notaro (Instant Family), Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld), Raul Castillo (Vida), Nora Arnezeder (Origin), Matthias Schweighöfer (The Manny), Samantha Win (Wonder Woman), Rich Cetrone (Thor) and Garrett Dillahunt (Fear the Walking Dead).

“The movie takes place in Las Vegas,” Snyder previously said. “A zombie plague hits Vegas, and they’re able to contain the virus to the city – they build a wall out of shipping containers. And then the city falls. And six years later, one of the casino owners hires this group of zombie soldiers to go get his money that he left in a safe in the casino.”

Snyder has been working on the film since 2007, originally having it in development at Warner Bros. Now, the project is in development at Netflix. Word is the streaming service is sparing no expense with a budget reportedly in the $70 million to $90 million range. The Justice League director will produce alongside his wife Deborah Snyder for The Stone Quarry with Wesley Collar. Ori Marmu and Andrew Norman will oversee for Netflix. Principal photography is scheduled to begin this July.

The filmmaker’s last zombie pic was also his first — 2004’s Dawn of the Dead starring Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames and Michael Kelly, among others. Since then he has mostly stayed close to the comic book genre with 300WatchmenMan of Steel, and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as the anime-inspired action epic Sucker Punch.
