Between scrolling through streaming platforms, channel surfing on cable and looking at my personal collection of films, rarely a day goes by that I’m not reminded of the fact the world is without the warm and insanely talented Robin Williams and while it could’ve just worked as a documentary exploring his amazing later career, Tylor Norwood’s Robin’s Wish aims for higher intentions of looking at why we lost the Oscar winner too soon and the result is a powerful and rousing documentary.
Robin’s Wish tells the powerful true story of actor/comedian Robin Williams’ final days. For the first time, Robin’s fight against a deadly neurodegenerative disorder, known as Lewy Body Dementia, is shown in stunning detail. Through a gripping journalistic lens, this incredible story sheds an entirely new light on the tragedy, beauty, and power behind the mind of one of the greatest entertainers of all time
With a career as historic and celebrated as Williams’, the immediate question becomes just where is a filmmaker supposed to begin his tale? Does he begin with his college years at Juilliard learning more classical and dramatic acting or dive right into his stand up in San Francisco and Los Angeles? Norwood takes a more unique approach and instead begins just prior to the end, exploring the comedian’s final few days on Earth and his relationships with both his wife, neighbors, and friends before arriving at the devastating date of August 11, 2014, in which things take a more serious turn and we see the tragic aftermath of his death.
From the media circus that invaded the quiet neighborhood of Paradise City, California to the misinformation and uninformed reporting of the circumstances regarding Williams’ passing, Norwood expertly shines a light on all of these without necessarily villainizing any of the parties involved, but rather trying to play devil’s advocate to all as he gets to one of the key goals of the story: the real reason behind his death, Lewy Body Dementia.
While it would have been nice to see more time spent on the topic and the studies and research scientists are conducting to try and find a solution to the issue, Norwood displays that he has clearly put in the time and research into finding the appropriate experts on the topic and worked with them to shine the light on it for audiences in an easily comprehensible way. Some documentaries would offer audiences highly-technical words and impenetrable graphs and cellular imagery that viewers are just supposed to interpret as “that’s the science,” but Norwood and his interviewees keep things in layman terms and succinct that it allows us to grasp the material and its effect on the titular subject and others with it.
But when the film isn’t studying the science behind his demise, it extensively looks at the various happier elements of Williams’ life, bringing in a number of his friends and co-collaborators who share beautiful stories of his warm heart and charitable lifestyle. Seeing Williams in archive footage on stage at various comedy shows and at USO shows overseas, as well as visiting military hospitals to bring injured soldiers and veterans comfort in their most trying times is just one of the many things Norwood and the film does so well to get to the heart of their subject and his overall goal in life: to bring hope to others even if he himself suffered from a lack of it.
Admittedly it’s hard not to be a little biased coming into the documentary, given Williams’ extensive influence on my life and the amazing things he’s done over the years on screen and off, but even for those only mildly familiar with his career and his dedication to his fans and the general public, Norwood and the interviewees do a great job of highlighting the truly amazing man that he was and make it hard not to bring tears to viewers’ eyes over the course of its 77-minute runtime.
Though some of the science could’ve been better touched upon, Norwood displays a magnificent grip on telling the unknown and heartbreaking final days and months of Williams’ life in Robin’s Wish and is sure to be the love letter and final goodbye longtime fans and newcomers to his work need.

Way back in 2004 it was announced that Bill & Ted creators Chris Matheson & Ed Solomon were trying to get a deeply absurd stop motion animated comedy off the ground called Automatons. During promotion of this past weekend’s Bill & Ted Face the Music, screenwriter Solomon gave us the goods on the long-gestating project and how it may yet see the light of day! We’ve also included a few stills from the original shorts via Automatons set designer Kyle Arneson!

“I tweeted about ‘Automatons’ and someone named Matt from Adult Swim reached out to me about maybe doing it,” Solomon confirmed. “I want to reach out to Matt again about that because that was a really fun, unsung little gem that never went anywhere, one of the weirdest, funniest, strangest things I’ve ever been involved with. We made four shorts with Screen Novelties. Screen Novelties did three and a group out of Portland did a fourth one. But that was so weird and fun and funny and absurd and ridiculous. If you thought ‘Face the Music’ was passed on by the community, ‘Automatons’ was rejected so fast by everybody that I don’t know if it’ll ever see the light of day. But that’s something I would love to pursue at some point, actually. It’s the most absurd, ridiculous story I think we ever wrote.”
The vocals have already been recorded 15 years ago with a star-studded cast, which Matheson & Solomon financed themselves in hopes of generating interest.
“We recorded a set of vocals,” Recalled Solomon. “Here’s what happened. When we set out initially to write ‘Bill & Ted’ we were gonna write it as one sketch in a sketch movie, like a ‘Kentucky Fried Movie’ film. And ‘Bill & Ted’ was one sketch. Another sketch was Otto and Rob, the ‘Automatons,’ these two insecure robots created during World War II to stop Hitler, whose submarine sank and they’ve been wandering around the bottom of the ocean for 70 years and they emerge in Minneapolis St. Paul, still trying to find Hitler. But somehow, the pressure of being underwater has created a little bit of a human characteristic, so they are unfortunately totally insecure and neurotic. So they’re these neurotic insecure robots who are indestructible, who believe they’re humans and accuse humans of being robots.”
If you thought that was wild, read on…
“In the premise, Hitler and Tojo and Mussolini happen to be in Minneapolis because they’ve frozen themselves cryogenically and are trying to redeem themselves by putting on a production of ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,’ but they don’t get the rights, so they have to write their own version called ‘You’re a Very Good Boy, Charlie Blue.’” They try to perform it, and Otto and Rob basically are trying to stop them. It’s the world’s most absurd movie.”

So how much of the script for Automatons was actually committed to celluloid in full animation?
“We made four two-minute episodes and we were so certain that we could get this thing set up that we financed ourselves a recording of the entire movie with Jack Black, John C. Reilly, Sylvester Stallone, John Cleese, Fred Armisen, Holly Hunter, Billy Bob Thornton, Gary Shandling, William H. Macy, Rachel Dratch and Catherine O’Hara. We had Deidrich Bader, we had Dennis Haysbert, we had Chris Parnell. I mean, it was this unbelievable group. And we recorded the whole damn thing, and still, every studio was like, ‘Are you out of your mind? This is the weirdest thing, and you have Hitler putting on a musical. This is not going to ever work.’ But you know, my fantasy is that one day maybe I can do it again. I won’t be able to use those voices because that was a long time ago, and even though we own them, it wouldn’t really be ethically correct to just repurpose their voices 15 years later. But you know, maybe we can do it in bytes again somewhere. It might be really fun.”
Does Automatons sound AMAZING? Would you love to see it brought to the big or small screen? Let us know in the comments below!

Bill & Ted Face the Music centers on Bill S. Preston (Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Reeves), who are now fathers and have yet to fulfill their rock ‘n’ roll destinies. Their lives change when they are visited by a messenger from the future who warns them that only their song can save life as we know it.

Joining Winter and Reeves are Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical) as Bill and Ted’s daughters, respectively. The film will also feature Anthony Carrigan (Barry), Jillian Bell (Workaholics), Kristen Schall (Toy Story 4), Holland Taylor (Gloria Bell), Kid Cudi, Erinn Hayes, Jayma Mays, and Beck Bennet. William Sadler is also set to reprise his role as Death alongside franchise returners Amy Stoch and Hal London Jr. Newcomer.
RELATED: Bill & Ted Face the Music Review: Nostalgia & Fun Outweigh Predictability
ComingSoon.net: This movie’s been in the works for about a decade now. When did the talks with you first start coming about to have you come back as Death or the Grim Reaper?
William Sadler: Ed Solomon, one of the two writers called me maybe three years ago and said, “You know, we’re writing the script. We’re finally writing the script for the third one and we’d like to include Death. Are you still interested in doing it?” I was like, I guess if I’d told them no, maybe they would’ve left him out. But I said yeah. Of course I’m interested in doing it. I had such a fun time with Bogus Journey that I was glad. I was anxious to reprise the role. I was excited to do it again, and especially when he told me what had happened to Death’s solo musical career in the meantime that, he did never become the rock star that he thought he would after he joined the Wyld Stallyns.
CS: I was going to say, it sort of course-corrects in this one compared to the end of the second one. And that’s interesting, because in addition to giving Bill and Ted a new life path, it also gives Grim Reaper a new one. What was it like seeing that in the script and then helping bring that to life on the screen?
Sadler: Ed actually told me what they were planning to do, and where he was thinking of taking the Reaper. And I thought that was terrific, that you know, his solo career was on the rocks. He was really in a bad place by the time this third movie starts. Because you do have to sort of address what have these guys been doing all this time? But I have to say that I love the idea of a failed musical career for the Reaper. And then, to have them come back and engage him again was just like, really satisfying. I thought that was a great move.
CS: Did you find you had any creative challenges in stepping back into the role of the Grim Reaper after so long?
Sadler: It wasn’t creative so much. I’m a bit older now. I think I was 40 when I shot the first one, so you can do the math. It’s just a little more challenging this time around. Some of the physicality of the character was a little more challenging, but the acting was more I guess over the years, I’ve learned to enjoy it more. I think I’m a better actor now than I was back then. So that part was easier and more fun.
CS: That’s awesome.
Sadler: If that makes sense to you?
CS: Yes, absolutely, absolutely. So after getting the script and all that, what was that feeling like getting back on set and being in person with Keanu and Alex again?
Sadler: That was, well, it’s funny you ask that because they finished putting the makeup on for the first time, and I put on the [outfit] and the boots that make me 6’4” or something and I was standing around in my trailer. I couldn’t stop looking at myself in the mirror because there he was again, you know? It was like meeting an old friend. And then, when we got back together on the set with Alex and Keanu, the energy was completely right. It was like we’d never stopped doing it, you know? You know, you have friends that you don’t see them for a long period of time and then you meet them again and it’s like you were never apart, you know? You just pick right up where you left off. That’s sort of what it was like.
CS: I know that feeling very well. It’s a great feeling, when you get to just pick up like that.
Sadler: Yeah.
CS: So then, even though you’re not in this one as frequently as Bogus Journey, did you find that you got to play around with the character a bit more or kind of improvise some of your moments on screen in this one?
Sadler: I did. Apparently this character can’t shut-up once he gets going, so I was adding little bits and pieces here and there, yes. Even though he doesn’t have as much screen time as I did in Bogus Journey, I think there was enough. He’s a strong flavor. You don’t need two hours of him. But yeah, I felt free enough to adlib here and there, yes.
CS: One of the things I found interesting, too, was with the introduction of Anthony Carrigan’s character. I almost saw a lot of parallels between his story arc and this one and yours and Bogus Journey, so then, it almost was interesting to see you two sort of interact in the scenes that you have together. What was that like working with him to sort of build that awkward rapport between you two?
Sadler: First of all, he’s lovely to work with. He’s terrific. He’s a really terrific actor and very funny. And I agree. I can’t help but think that it was deliberate, that they created this character who’s supposed to be dangerous and you know, a killing machine. And then, little by little he becomes likable and finally lovable. And you know, not scary at all. And I agree with you, that’s precisely what the Reaper’s job was in Bogus Journey. He starts as this really scary figure, and then little by little falls apart, as we see, oh, he’s just like all the rest of us, you know? This insecure little puppy. But yeah, so I thought Anthony was fantastic in this. I loved the weird costuming, he survived.
CS: Yeah, that was quite the unique design that they gave his character. So one of the things I’m very curious about, too, is that the last time we saw you portray the Grim Reaper wasn’t actually in Bogus Journey, but was actually in Tales from the Crypt. And so, I’m curious, can you tell us a little bit about how that came to be?
Sadler: I think I was playing some kind of a game with — yeah, that was the idea of the Tales from the Crypt producers. After I created the Grim Reaper for Bill & Ted, and they just wanted to use it. They wanted to use the character. So I did it. I’d actually played the Reaper before I did Bill & Ted. There was a show called The Salted Nuts, a sketch comedy show. And one of the sketches they wanted me to play the Grim Reaper who comes to this woman’s house to reap her. And she’s such a pain in the ass that he leaves in disgust. He doesn’t want to be any part of it. And I’ve used the accent. That’s where the character actually started. So I guess I’ve been carrying it around in my pocket for years.
CS: Oh wow. I had not even realized the true origin of it. That’s actually really cool, that you got to do this multiple times.
Sadler: You can Google it, The Salted Nuts.
CS: I will be sure to do so, because now that sketch sounds hilarious. And so, this movie, I mean, it was originally supposed to be just theatrical and now it’s going to get its simultaneous theater and video on demand release. How did it feel for you, when you first heard that news, about the duel release?
Sadler: I don’t really know what to expect, to be honest with you. During normal times, there would be a premiere. People would dress up and there’d be a big celebration to launch the film, that kind of thing. That’s what we used to do, anyway, in Hollywood. So I really don’t know what to expect. I just hope people get a chance to see it safely. You know, I really don’t know what to expect, this time around. I’m not sure this has ever been done before, release a movie in the theaters and pay-per-view or however online, however they do it. Do you know? Has it been done before?
CS: I believe you are the second one to do it this summer. I think the Trolls sequel that came out earlier this year was the first to do that, to try that out. But I don’t think they had much theater time before everything shut down.
Sadler: Right. I mean, who’s going to go to the movie theater? It’s a shame. I guess drive-ins. It could play in drive-ins all over the world. That’d be terrific.
CS: I think this would be a fun one for drive-ins.
Sadler: It’s not the same as sitting in a room together, laughing at this movie.
CS: Yeah.
Sadler: And I don’t know. We’ll have to see how it goes.

RELATED: Get Duked! Review: A Zany & Hilarious Subversion of Genres
Written and directed by Ninian Doff in his feature directorial debut, Get Duked! follows teenage pals Dean, Duncan, and DJ Beatroot from Glasgow who embark on a character-building camping trip inspired by the real-life program Duke of Edinburgh Award, where foraging, teamwork, and orienteering are the order of the day. Eager to cut loose and smoke weed in the Scottish Highlands, the trio finds themselves paired with straight-laced Ian, a fellow camper determined to play by the rules.
After veering off the path into remote farmland that’s worlds away from their urban comfort zone, the boys find themselves hunted down by a shadowy force hell-bent on extinguishing their futures, leading to an anarchic journey of generational politics, hip-hop loving farmers, and hallucinogenic rabbit droppings that pits the youth of tomorrow against the status quo of yesterday.
Alongside Eddie Izzard, the film stars Kate Dickie (The Witch), Georgie Glen (Call The Midwife), James Cosmo (His Dark Materials), Kevin Guthrie (The Terror), Jonathan Aris (Vivarium), Alice Lowe (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), Samuel Bottomley (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), Rian Gordon (The Rebel), Viraj Juneja and Lewis Gribben.

According to TheWrap, Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to develop a script package for Shelly, the action comedy movie starring Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (The Farewell, Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians) and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Endgame, Selfie).
RELATED: Welcome to the Blumhouse Trailer: New Amazon Prime Horror Films Set For October
The story takes place a decade after an embarrassing prom prank ran Shelly Wheeler (Awkwafina) out of town and so hardened her heart that she became an ice-cold hit-woman. Revenge threatens to be sweet when she learns her next target is her former high school tormentor, Dianna Park (Gillan). But when Dianna unexpectedly befriends Shelly, the assassin finds herself in with the cool crowd, protecting her old nemesis against another hit crew hired to kill them both. The tone is Mean Girls meets Barry.
Shelly is written by Michael Doneger (Brampton’s Own, Couples Therapy) and Liz Storm (Tall Tales, Boomtown) and directed by Jude Weng (The Good Place).

She’s a girl worth streaming for! Mulan drops on Disney+ this week! In anticipation for the film, ComingSoon.net attended (in the pre-COVID times) a screening with director Niki Caro and star Yifei Liu who shared in a special Q&A their excitement for the film’s release. It’s the first Disney legacy film directed by a woman, and bringing it to gorgeous life was no easy feat but an incredible work of collaborative genius led by Caro. While the film was originally slated for a theatrical run, discover more about the making of the film before you catch it streaming on Disney+!

ComingSoon.net: This is the largest live-action film ever filmed by a female filmmaker. Was there any intimidation coming with that or did you look at it with excitement?
Niki Caro: The intimidating thing was my responsibility in telling the story, to the studio, and to the audience. With every film, I’ve made I had a vision that was far bigger than the budget allowed and so this time to be able to have a budget equal to the vision in my head was just really satisfying. For me, Mulan was a journey from village girl to male soldier to warrior and hero that felt like it spoke for all of us. It was a story that didn’t, in fact, originate with the 1998 animation but it was about 1500 years old and has resonating and relevant for centuries and never more so now than ever. We tried to mine everything that we could from the ballad and also just to be inspired by it.
CS: Obviously this movie isn’t going to work unless you have the perfect Mulan. Yifei I’m curious when did you hear when they were making this movie and what attracted you to play such an iconic character?
Yifei Liu: I heard that so many people auditioned and so I ask myself if I wanted to go up (for it) what can I bring? Obviously this is a role everyone wants to play because it’s so meaningful, as a human being to really be that brave to become who she wants to be. And I ask myself this question. I want to bring me, so I need to really get through, meditate and calm myself. I was with this beautiful director and just do my audition. I actually heard it was after 2 hours after audition and I’m relieved kind of cuz I think I did an ok job. And Niki said “so we gonna send you to this physical trainer to see and I said ok– I’m on my next step. So that means something. The actual training process really test your limits. It was fun. Every movie, it’s brand new. I did act on movies with martial art element but obviously not a professional but I’m so glad I have this whole team to prepare and some of the flexibility help with that. I learned tai chi and chi gong movements. Because Mulan, her chi is the connection of her spirit, not ego, but her true self.
CS: In addition to the wonderful women on screen, and I love the addition of the Gong Li character, how did you start rounding it out with getting ppl like Jet Li and Gong Li to participate?
Caro: They all wanted to be part of this and I think it’s a testament to obviously Mulan herself and the nature of this character and Chinese culture and also the legacy of Disney.
CS: You also had some fantastic women behind the stage. You had a female cinematographer for starters.
Caro: yeah I think it’s the only movie of this scale and genre where all the voices, all the people running it are women so: me Mandy Walker cinematographer, Liz Tom 1st AD and producer, costumer designer, makeup designer, and the only female lead. Very well prepared we were. Communicated very effectively brought it on time and slightly under budget because that’s just how we roll.
CS: There’s been a lot of talk of things we hope are improving for female filmmakers, do you see any improvement?
Caro: Yeah I am, but I would say there’s room for more.
CS: Niki for you what ended up being the biggest challenge?
Caro: The biggest challenge for me was how to tell a story about two armies going to war, a young woman going to war, without being able to show any fighting really or blood under the Disney brand. Game of thrones really changed the battle game for shooting those sort of sequences and they couldn’t be there so I was really blessed that the fighting style was martial arts – wushu – and being inherently beautiful but also what unlocked it for me was that figured out I could set that battle sequence in a geothermal valley and so that the smoke and steam could reveal and obscure violence and it could suggest and could also be very beautiful and very cinematic and I’m proud of that I’m proud that the battle sequences feel visceral and robust but never gratuitous.
CS: What were the creative choices that felt choosing from the animated and the ballad, like what were some sequences where you were like “this would work” and how is working with china affected the animated as well to bring it in?
Caro: I wanted to honor it by bringing through sequences that felt iconic so the matchmaker sequence the avalanche felt like something. It wasn’t in the script when I came on so I brought it back because I felt like that was a way we could really flex our cinematic masses and visual effects and to really spectacular avalanche but the trick there was to try to understand how she could be so strategic enough to bring the avalanche down because in the animation it’s quite cute because it’s Mushu, it’s a little rocket, and it comes out of that kind of comedy but the thing I love about Mulan the most is that how super smart she is and strategic and so we spent quite a bit of time as we tried to figure out the avalanche sequence how would she make it happen?
CS: What did you learn about yourselves as artists and people and how were you transformed when making this movie?
Caro: For me, it’s not lost on my, that there’s a line in the movie gong li’s character says to Mulan “impossible, a woman leading a man’s army” and that’s what I did. The film organism is even despite my best efforts is still a man’s army and when I first started out I didn’t think it was possible. I used to think–so embarrassingly now–that I would somehow have to disguise myself so the fact that I’m making a movie about this very thing and the fact that I was able to tell the story in such a way, and this is so this is a critical difference from what we did and what the animation did cuz the animation has Mulan disguised as a man to find herself and our version Mulan learns that she can never be powerful unless she loses that disguise and that big moment in the movie that you hear the iconic reflection sound she lets her hair down and battles as a woman is truly powerful and then goes off to save china. That’s what I’m the most proud of and what is the most meaningful thing to me to send that message out there.
Stream Mulan on September 4th exclusively on Disney+ with Premier Access (Disney+ subscription and additional fee required).
