The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will feature a score by Hans Zimmer and original songs by Ali Dee. Lionsgate lands Victoria Mahoney to helm Shadow Force

After acquiring the rights to the Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) and Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere)-starring actioner last fall, Lionsgate has tapped Victoria Mahoney (Lovecraft Country) to direct Shadow Force, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Victoria is one of the most impressive and in-demand directors working today,” Erin Westerman, President of Production for Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “Like with all of her work, she will bring iconic action, warmth, style, and gravitas to Shadow Force.

Written by Leon Chills, Shadow Force is being likened to the box office hit Mr. & Mrs. Smith, describing it as a fresh take on the 2005 action-comedy which starred award-winning actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Further details about the film’s plot are under wraps with different studios previously bidding for the film’s theatrical rights, with Lionsgate becoming the winning bidder. Mahoney recently set history as the first female and person of color director of a big-screen Star Wars project as the second-unit director of the closure of The Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker.

We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Victoria Mahoney,” Washington and Brown said in a statement. “Her vision is inspiring. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Her artistry and insight have already deepened this electrifying project.

Washington along with Pilar Savone will produce the film through their Simpson Street banner. While Indian Meadows Productions’ Brown and Danielle Reardon will be producing along with Stephen “Dr” Love of Made with Love Media company.

Washington is best known for her roles as Olivia Pope in the political thriller series Scandal which earned her two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Brown has won two Emmy Awards for his roles as Christopher Darden and Randall Pearson in the award-winning series’ American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson and  This Is Us, respectively.

Though having returned to the world of goofier comedies with Hubie Halloween, Adam Sandler may just be ready for more awards-worthy material as he has signed on to star in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of The Spaceman of Bohemia, according to Deadline.

Based on Jorslav Kalfar’s novel of the same name, the plot centers on an astronaut (Sandler) sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust, but instead finds his earthly life falling to pieces and must turn to one voice to help him put it back together, which happens to belong to a creature from the beginning of time lurking in his ship.

The script is set to be adapted by Colby Day in his feature debut with Johan Renck, the Emmy-winning eye behind the camera on HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries, set to direct the project. The drama will be produced by Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Michael Parets for Free Association, with Parets overseeing for the banner while Tim Headington, Lia Buman and Max Silva will oversee for Tango Entertainment and Ben Ormand, Renck and Barry Bernadi set to executive produce.

As we prepare for our voyage to Chopra, I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the perfect partner in Adam,” Renck said in a statement. “And now, with the support of the brilliant Netflix family, I am profoundly excited to set off on our impossible journey.

Sandler currently has a major multi-film deal in place with the streaming platform, which has delivered such hits as Murder Mystery and Hubie Halloween, and while he already has the sports comedy Hustle set up with Netflix, this may be an opportunity to see him recreate the acclaim of his serious performance from Uncut Gems on the service, though it’s also unclear if this will be eligible towards his recent four-film extension or act as a separate project from the deal.

Kenya Barris tapped to write/direct/produce Richard Pryor biopic

After years of attempts at telling the story of the legendary comedian on the big screen, MGM has acquired the rights to a new iteration of a Richard Pryor biopic with Kenya Barris (Black-ish) attached to write, direct and produce the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The way Pryor did what he did — with truth and specificity that was somehow self-aware and self-deprecating, and said with an unmatched level of vulnerability — that was the power and impact of his work,” Barris said in a statement. “Pryor had a voice that was distinctly his and, in many ways, comedy since then has been derivative of what he created. To me, this is a film about that voice, the journey that shaped it, and what it took for it to come to be.

The untitled project will be produced by Barris via his Khalabo Ink Society production banner alongside Pryor’s widow Jennifer Lee Pryor for her Tarnished Angel banner and Tory Metzger for Levantine Films, while Adam Rosenberg is attache to executive produce the film.

Having had a front-row seat to much of Richard’s life, I am excited that the mystery of his genius is finally going to be explored and Kenya Barris is the perfect person to do it,” Lee Pryor said in a statement. “Richard and Kenya are creative brothers.

A biopic centered on Pryor has been in the works for over a decade now, with previous attempts including Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? being produced by Chris Rock and Adam Sandler, which had Marlon Wayans, Eddie Murphy and Mike Epps attached to produce at various points in development as well as Mike Condon and Lee Daniels being set to direct, though after years of languishing in development hell it appears that project has officially died.

Timothée Chalamet-led Bob Dylan biopic paused indefinitely

With its director wrapped up in a blockbuster project and pandemic protocols creating a number of challenges for some of its elements, the Timothée Chalamet-led Bob Dylan biopic has officially been put on hold indefinitely, according to Collider.

RELATED: Timothée Chalamet in Talks to Star in James Mangold’s Bob Dylan Biopic

In an interview for Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, director of photography Phedon Papamichael revealed that while he is reteaming with James Mangold (Ford v. Ferrari) for the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, he doesn’t believe the drama centered on the 12-time Grammy winner is “dead,” but rather is “a tough one to pull off in a COVID era because it’s all in small clubs with lots of extras in period costumes, so you’ve got lots of hair and makeup.” Despite this, however, Papamichael hasn’t confirmed whether talks are ongoing to outright cancel the project.

Going Electric will chronicle Bob Dylan’s rise in folk music and sudden transition to rock ‘n’ roll. The film will also see Dylan’s interaction with 1960s’ music legends which include Joan Baez, and Seeger. The Fox Searchlight-produced film includes the rights to the Pop Culture icon’s music rights and to author Elijah Wald’s book titled Dylan Goes Electric.

The film will be executive produced by Dylan along with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Andrew Rona. Jeff Rosen, who is Dylan’s longtime manager has also signed on as a producer with Mangold, Veritas Entertainment Group’s Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer and Peter Jaysen, Automatik’s Fred Berger, and The Picture Company’s Alex Heineman also set to produce.

Chalamet recently starred as Laurie in Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of Little Women and will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded epic sci-fi film Dune starring alongside Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. Chalamet is also part of the amazing ensemble cast for Wes Anderson’s forthcoming comedy-drama The French Dispatch.

Coming off from the critical success of Ford v Ferrari, this project will mark Mangold’s second musical biopic as he first directed the award-wining 2005 Johnny Cash-June Carter biopic film Walk the Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. His other notable film credits include Girl, Interrupted, Kate & Leopold, and Logan with the latter earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Evil Dead Rise: Bruce Campbell Offers New Update on Fifth Installment

In a recent interview with AL.com, franchise star and producer Bruce Campbell has shared new details on the upcoming fifth installment of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead films, confirming that director Lee Cronin has completed his screenplay for Evil Dead Rise, describing it as a “modern-day urban Evil Dead.” He also revealed that they’ve already talked to a couple of potential partners and is hoping to start production next year.

“We’re honing-in, circling the building now trying to lock in a partner,” Campbell said. “We have a couple of bidders and we’re trying to just find the correct suitor and we have a script written and a director picked. Sam Raimi hand-picked a guy named Lee Cronin, who’s a very good Irish filmmaker. And it’s got a very good modern tale. It’s a modern-day urban “Evil Dead,” it’s called “Evil Dead Rise.” And we’re hoping to do that next year.”

He also went on to provide a brief description of the film’s female heroine. “What we’re doing now is we’re saying, Look, this is another ‘Evil Dead’ movie and that book gets around, a lot of people run into it and it’s another story,” Campbell continued. “The main key with “Evil Dead” is they’re just regular people who are battling what seems to be a very unstoppable evil, and so that’s where the horror comes from. It’s not someone who’s skilled. They’re not fighting a soldier. They’re not fighting a scientist. They’re not fighting anybody more than your average neighbor. This one is going to be a similar thing. We’re going to have a heroine, a woman in charge, and she’s going to try and save her family.”

The next installment to the Evil Dead films will be written and directed by The Hole In The Ground filmmaker Lee Cronin, who was handpicked by franchise creator Sam Raimi. Campbell previously confirmed that the upcoming film won’t have any ties to the previous films and might again feature a female lead.

The Evil Dead franchise began with 1981’s The Evil Dead and was followed by 1987’s Evil Dead II and 1993’s Army of Darkness which were all written and directed by Sam Raimi and centered on Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams. The original trilogy had amassed a massive cult following that spawn into video games, stage musicals, and a comedy horror series titled Ash vs. Evil Dead which ran on-air from 2015-2018. In 2013, the fourth installment to film franchise was introduced with Fede Alvarez’s 2013 soft reboot of Raimi’s 1981 film which now revolves around a female protagonist.

Lee Cronin is an Irish filmmaker who made his feature-length directorial debut last year with the supernatural horror film The Hole in the Ground. He also recently collaborated with Raimi as he directed an episode of Quibi’s horror anthology series 50 States of Fright.
