The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee Trailer: His legacy is more than a croc

Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for the meta-fueled Australian comedy The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee which sees outback legend Paul Hogan return to films as himself as he seeks to prove his legacy is more than a croc. The trailer can be viewed in the player below!

Co-written and directed by Dean Murphy, the film centers on the 81-year-old star as he finds himself thrust back into the spotlight with the announcement he will be knighted by the Queen of England and must attempt to restore his sullied reputation ahead of the ceremony.

After a lengthy absence from both film and television, Paul Hogan surged back into the spotlight after a trailer was released promoting a film project titled Dundee in 2018. After much speculation over whether or not this film was a legitimate film, the truth was revealed. The catcher was that the short film trailer was an advertisement to promote tourism in Australia.

The original 1986 Crocodile Dundee was a fish-out-of-water comedy written by and starring Paul Hogan as the Australian bushman Mick Dundee who comes to New York City. A sleeper hit, it grossed $328 million at the worldwide box office and spawned two sequels, 1988’s Crocodile Dundee II and 2001’s Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, neither of which met the expectations of the original.

The Very Excellent Mr Dundee is directed by Murphy (Strange Bedfellows, Muggers), who also produces alongside Nigel Odell (Long Weekend, Muggers). Executive producers are KMI’s Kathy Morgan, Christopher Figg and Robert Whitehouse from London’s Piccadilly Pictures, Sherman Ng from Singapore’s Salt Media and Andrew Mackie and Richard Payten from Transmission Films.

CS Interview: Star Jai Courtney on action thriller Honest Thief

ComingSoon.net got the opportunity to chat with star Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad) to discuss his role in the Liam Neeson-led action thriller Honest Thief as the corrupt FBI agent John Nivens. The film is now out in select theaters!

RELATED: Honest Thief Review: By-The-Numbers But Plenty Fun Action-Thriller

ComingSoon: You’ve kicked ass with Bruce Willis and Tom Cruise, you’ve had your ass kicked by Tom Cruise, what’s it like entering the ass-kicking world of Liam Neeson?

Jai Courtney: I feel like it was just the direction I had to go, I had to tick another one of these legends off my list and who better to link up with than Liam on a movie like this [laughs]. It was a lot of fun and he’s obviously a legend and it’s kind of a familiar genre for him and what we love seeing him do and that’s a big part of why I wanted to get involved and come on board, so I was thrilled for the opportunity.

CS: Though we’ve seen you play similar characters before, what was it like getting to the heart of your role in this one?

JC: I always have a lot of fun with these characters, I do try to spread them out a little because I have other interests and I feel like there’s kind of more strings to my bow, but it is a lot of fun when you get to do something like this where you’re a pretty straightforward bad guy. You always try to root that in something that feels authentic and Nivens was no exception, he’s a guy that truly believes that it’s a victimless crime they’re committing and what’s the big deal and he makes some sense. It might not be in line with everyone’s moral code, but there’s something to be said for it. I always just try to have fun with that and not judge these bad guys too harshly and it helps me settle into that and enjoy and I hope audiences can do that with this character as well.

CS: What was it like developing the antagonistic banter with Liam and Anthony Ramos?

It was great, Anthony and I had a great time, we play very different guys where our codes sit and our ethical approach to the job, so it was kind of interesting because they’re both sort of not on the same page the whole time and trying to convince him of some of the stuff we have to be capable of created a nice energy between us. Liam was interesting, there’s so much of the film where we’re not in the same room, but he’s kind of coming after us or we’re going after him, so it was really cool when we finally got to do a couple of those scenes where we’re in the same space, there’s some great action there as well and of course no Liam Neeson film would be complete without some great phone conversations either [laughs]. It was cool to be a part of some of those moments in it as well.

CS: Did you find you got to do a majority of your stunts throughout the film?

JC: Yeah I did and it was a lot of fun, it’s not like super super heavy for my character, but there’s some great shootout stuff and it’s always good working with some great people and getting some weapons combat. We had a fantastic stunt team, Mark Vanselow, who also doubles as Liam, was our coordinator, they’ve been together for a long time and I think they have a really great shorthand in developing the action for his kind of stuff and the kind of film that he likes to make and I had a great time with him. There was some cool stuff, some great pyrotechnics, a bit of driving as well, some good car-rig stuff. I haven’t played this space in a minute, I’ve kind of been exploring other types of cinema and TV even in this past year, so it was cool to be back in the saddle with a sort of straightforward action film and playing a role of this kind.

CS: Since you mention TV, Mark Williams is one of the creative minds behind Ozark, did you two talk at all about having you join the final season?

[Laughs] No I didn’t bug him about that, so it’s all good, these things will either happen or they won’t through the kind of natural progression of things. The show Stateless I did out in Australia, it came out on Netflix not too long ago and I’m thrilled with that, there’s such great writing in TV at the moment and I really enjoy that more long-form storytelling so hopefully one of these days I’ll find something to go over there and do, it’d be awesome. I’m a big fan of Ozark, that was a lot of what had to do with getting involved with Mark and hearing his brilliant ideas.

CS: There’s a nice dark humor underlying the whole film, what was it like for you honing in on that tone for your character?

JC: I kind of like that vibe, it’s kind of what’s fun about playing a role like this is you have to kind of be able to manage that, it’s kind of what helps keep these characters enjoyable. That’s always kind of my goal in playing a villain is to portray something people want more of, even if they’re not someone that’s really likable, you want them walking away feeling like they had fun with them. Kind of having a bit of banter and a bit of a comic edge to some of the exchanges, that all is the sort of things that make it interesting for me when I’m exploring it and reading something and deciding if it’s the right move and Nivens was kind of right in line with that. I saw an opportunity to have a lot of fun with someone and get up to no good.

CS: What would you say were some of your biggest creative challenges coming into this project?

Honestly the challenging stuff was getting back into some of the physical scenes and working out some of that stunt stuff. There’s a great fight scene with myself and Kate Walsh, which was a lot of fun, but took a lot of rehearsal, and some stuff with Liam’s character as well and I think having that bit of a break from the action scene, that’s the sort of stuff that’s such a perishable skill and that you really get a fitness for when you’re doing a lot of it. I think that was something where I was like, “Damn, yeah, we’re getting back in the gym and putting the work in to make sure these scenes really serve the movie and they’re exciting and keeping everyone safe during.” That was probably the biggest challenge with this, playing an asshole comes kind of naturally to me, so working with a character like Nivens is often the easiest kind of stuff I get to do and I do joke a little there, but strangely there’s something kind of so fun and satisfying about playing a character that doesn’t have a ton of redeeming qualities and it frees you up. It’s good to play someone earnest who has a strict kind of moral code as well and is dealing with challenges within, but for a film like this it was cool to play someone like Nivens and I’ll be doing it again for sure.

Coming off from starring in Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s superhero film Project Power, it looks like Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has already set up his next Netflix project as he officially signs on for the leading role in the upcoming vampire hunter film titled Day Shift. On top of headlining, Foxx is also set as an executive producer. The film hails from John Wick director Chad Stahelski who is serving as a producer through his 87Eleven Entertainment.

Day Shift centers around the story of a hard-working blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year old daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires.

“‘Day Shift’ is a pulse-pounding thrill ride with action, danger and grounded comedy mixed with a deep mythology, the key ingredients for the absolute best time you can have watching a movie,” producer Shaun Redick said in a statement (via The Wrap). “We couldn’t be more excited about producing this at Netflix with Jamie Foxx starring!”

Stahelski added, “I’ve known and worked with JJ for a long time. His unique vision of ‘Day Shift’ makes it such a great first directorial project for him.”

Day Shift will be the feature directorial debut of J.J. The film will be produced by Stahelski and Jason Spitz for 87Eleven Entertainment along with Impossible Dream Entertainment’s Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick. It will be executive produced by Foxx, Datari Turner, and Peter Baxter.

This marks Foxx’s third project that he is currently working on with Netflix after recently signing on to star opposite John Boyega and Teyonah Parris in the upcoming sci-fi film They Cloned Tyrone. The 52-year-old actor will next be seen in Pixar’s Soul, Blumhouse’s Spawn, and in Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated third Spider-Man MCU film.

Faith Based Review:

The film world has been the subject of a number of satire-driven stories over the years, with everything from the industry-skewering Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back to the horror genre-critiquing Scream and New Nightmare, but one subject storytellers have frequently avoided is the world of religious-inspired filmmaking and now Luke Barnett has set his sights on the genre and the result is a mostly funny and fairly sharp comedy.

When two friends come to realize that every low budget Christian movie starring ’90s TV actors make millions of dollars, they hatch a plan to make their own genre film entitled A Prayer in Space, telling the story of the first prayer to ever be prayed in space.

The general set up for the film feels reminiscent of Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno as two down-on-their-financial-luck friends find a way to get ahead in life by capitalizing on a booming industry, though unlike Smith’s underrated gem, Barnett has utilized his “making a film” premise to actually issue a satirical point to viewers instead of aiming for a simply fun ride. The film doesn’t necessarily take any jabs or stabs at the institution of religion or their followers, but rather at its titular industry and the shadowy nature behind it.

In the money-hungry world of Hollywood filmmaking, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when the producers in the film are depicted as non-practicing in their religion and even uncaring in their efforts to deliver an inspirational story to audiences, but the manner in which they’re introduced and set the story in motion is a funny and surprising point that helps really ground the story and its satire.

From alcohol-driven performers to mildly-obsessed ex girlfriends helping with production, the character roster is full of unique and charming figures that help keep the energy of the film alive and provide a deeper connection to Luke and Tanner’s journey and many nice foils to their generally likable personas. One of the most interesting of the bunch arrives in the form of Jason Alexander’s TV actor-turned-definitely-pyramid-scheme head Nicky Steele, with the Seinfeld actor perfectly capturing his cult leader-esque personality in the inspirational videos as well as the actually-manic nature of a white collar hustler facing his own kinds of struggles.

Where the film’s real faults lie is in some of its hesitation to go a little further with its satire as well as its low budget nature, which frequently give the film a feeling of a cheaply-made production akin to the very films its skewering. There’s nothing inherently wrong with low-budget atmospheres or approaches to bringing stories to life, with some actually making the best use of their shoestring finances and Vincent Masciale does find display some stylishly shot moments throughout, while others offer an unfortunate spotlight to how limited the group clearly were. In establishing their primary financial backer as the preacher of a megachurch, it almost feels like Barnett and co. are ready to take some well-researched shots at the Disneylands for Christians, but sadly it feels like every time they’re ready to go for the jab they pull back and choose to direct their attentions elsewhere.

Despite this small handful of flaws, however, Faith Based ultimately proves to be a really charming, very smart and frequently funny ride with a unique satirical target and a sweet cast.

Jeremy Strong in Talks for Bradley Cooper’s Maestro

Jeremy Strong in Talks for Bradley Cooper's Maestro

Jeremy Strong in talks for Bradley Cooper’s Maestro

After landing Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) to star in the film last year, Jeremy Strong (The Trial of the Chicago 7) has entered negotiations to co-star in Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, according to Deadline.

RELATED: Maestro: Carey Mulligan Joins Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein Biopic

Strong is currently in talks to star as John Gruen, a renaissance man and critic for The New York Herald Tribune and New York Magazine beginning in the ’50s and wrote the authorized biography The Private World of Leonard Bernstein in 1968. Should the deal go through, the Succession Emmy winner would star alongside co-writer/director Cooper in the lead role of Bernstein, as well as Mulligan as Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre.

Maestro will span over 30 years in telling the beautifully complex story of the marriage between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. Bernstein’s colorful life included making a memorable conducting debut at the New York Philharmonic at 25 when the conductor took ill. Without even rehearsing, Bernstein did so well his star was launched the next day when his feat made the front page of the New York Times. He was blacklisted before being cleared of being a communist just before he composed the Oscar-nominated score for On the Waterfront, and he was an activist in the civil rights movement, and outspoken on issues including ending the Vietnam War.

Cooper’s main focus on the project has always been the “charged and complex relationship” between Bernstein and Montealegre. The star and filmmaker has reportedly been working closely with Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander, and Nina, over the past couple of years.

Maestro is co-written by Cooper and Josh Singer with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Cooper, and his Joint Effort producing partner Todd Phillips (Joker), Kristie Macosko Krieger, Oscar-nominated producer Emma Tilliinger Koskoff (The Irishman, Joker), and Fred Berner and Amy Durning set as producers.

Paramount is no longer involved with the project. Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is still attached. Production on the drama is expected to begin early next year. The streamer will give the film a significant theatrical release before it moves exclusively to Netflix.

The figure and vinyl can be viewed in the gallery below!

The Universal Horror line is part of a new set of figures the company has developed called Spinatures, which are highly-detailed turntable-spinner mini-busts that will feature iconic characters from pop culture, horror movies and beyond! Each figure is fitted with a hole in their base to easily attach to the spindle of a turntable and then spin along with your favorite records.

For those who don’t have a turntable, Waxwork has taken this into account for collectors with the ability to proudly display their Spinatures figures virtually anywhere. Any home or office setting is perfect for them, including computer desks, bookshelves, toy and collectible display cases, counter tops and even car dashboards.

The Bride of Frankenstein is a 1935 horror movie directed by James Whale, starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, and is the first sequel to the 1931 film FrankensteinIt is widely regarded as one of the greatest sequels in cinematic history. The film has been praised as Whale’s masterpiece. In 1998, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, having been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
Sourced from the original master acetates housed in the composer’s archives at Syracuse University and original masters from Universal, the album has been meticulously restored and re-mastered. Working closely with Universal Pictures, this historic release marks the very first time the original film music has been made available on vinyl. The album features new artwork by Phantom City Creative, a 12”x12” booklet including artwork and original scoring session photography, and liner notes by album producer and restoration engineer Mike Matessino.

The first Spinature figure came in the form of Frankenstein from their Universal Horror Line, an official Universal Monster product designed and produced by Waxwork and features the iconic creature from the landmark 1931 horror film with the likeness of legendary actor Boris Karloff. Many more official Universal Monster Spinatures are set to be unveiled as fall progresses, as well as throughout the 2020 holiday season including The Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolfman and The Invisible Man!
