Word has circled back and forth on who George Miller has been eyeing to lead his Mad Max: Fury Road prequel centered on Imperator Furiosa and now Warner Bros. has officially greenlit the film with Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants) set to lead alongside Chris Hemsworth (Extraction) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), according to Deadline.

Talks began swirling in late March that executives and filmmakers began taking video and phone meetings in hopes of greenlighting new projects over the next 12 months including Miller, who has began eyeing a number of actresses to take on a younger iteration of Theron’s character, with recent word being he was looking to cast Jodie Miller (Killing Eve) before returning to his initial choice of Taylor-Joy.

The film is being described as a standalone story that will dive into the origins of the character previously portrayed Charlize Theron (The Old Guard) before crossing paths with the eponymous antihero of the mothership franchise, with Miller set to direct, co-write and produce alongside his longtime Oscar-nominated partner Doug Mitchell, with Miller’s Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner attached to produce.

Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened in May of 2015, is the story of Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (InceptionThe Dark Knight Rises). Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. A Mad Max prequel might show us her life in The Green Place before she started working for Immortan Joe.
