Audiences may still have a year to wait for the arrival of Paramount and Hasbro’s prequel and potential soft reboot of the G.I. Joe film franchise, Snake Eyes, but star Henry Golding recently go the opportunity to see a cut of the film and has discussed new details including the film’s samurai influences.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for the forthcoming US release of Hong Khaou’s drama Monsoon, the 33-year-old star expressed praise for director Robert Schwentke (RED) and his status as a “Japanese cinepehile,” noting his influences of “everything from [Akira] Kurosawa to just the phenomenal Spaghetti Westerns of samurai movies.”
“He is so hooked into that history and we see some of those scenes,” Golding said. “With some of the fight scenes there are some chimbara sequences. A lot of attention to cultural detail was put into this movie. There are not a lot of movies that are allowed to film in Japan and we went to some amazing, amazing places. The authenticity is there. It’s always odd coming off of big productions. I was on Snake Eyes for like six months. We were in Vancouver previous to Japan. My wife [Liv Lo] comes out and she spends a long time with us wherever I am. Going from 100 miles an hour to a complete still, dead stop, it is pretty jarring. But we’ve actually really been enjoying exploring California. All the producers at Paramount really listened to my opinion, the opinion of others, and I think that’s why it’s going to be so special. It’s definitely been a challenge in creating something fresh and new, but I think we definitely achieved it.”
Snake Eyes is the ninja commando known for his deadly ability with a sword and trench knives. However, he is also a highly skilled martial artist who can be just as dangerous unarmed. Snake-Eyes was living in solitude in the High Sierras when he was recruited to join G.I. Joe. His real name and backstory have long been sources of mystery. As a result of being caught in a helicopter explosion, he is heavily scarred and mute. To hide his face, he usually appears in a black balaclava and matching bodysuit.
The film stars Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) as the titular ninja assassin, Andrew Koji (Warrior) as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais (The Raid, Stuber) as Hard Master, Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Scarlett, Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist) as Baroness, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Takehiro Hira as Kenta and Steven Allerick (The Expanse) as the father of Snake Eyes.

The spinoff is directed by Schwentke (R.I.P.D.) from a screenplay written by Evan Spiliotopoulous (Bright 2, The Huntsman: Winter’s War) with Jeff Waxman, Erik Howsam, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger serving as executive producers. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner are also producers on the film, which is set to hit theaters on October 22, 2021.

BAFTA nominated-actress Noomi Rapace has signed on for the leading role in Netflix‘s forthcoming film adaptation of Black Crab, based on Swedish writer Jerker Virdborg’s thriller novel of the same name. This project marks the fourth collaboration between Rapace and the streamer, who have previously worked together on 2017’s action fantasy film Bright, and sci-fi film What Happened to Monday as well as 2019’s action-thriller Close.
“I’m very excited to come back to Sweden and do Black Crab,” Rapace said in a statement (via Deadline). “My first Swedish film in years. Can’t wait to get suited up and go on this journey – explore human shadows and slide through broken dreams and a world on edge. Survival to what price?”

Set in a post-apocalyptic world during an endless winter, Black Crab follows six soldiers who are sent on a dangerous mission across the frozen sea to transport a package that could finally end the war. The film will be the feature-length directorial debut of Adam Berg with Malin Idevall and Mattias Montero set as producers. Production is expected to begin next year in Sweden.
“This project combines so many great attributes: a compelling story, a strong creative team and of course an incredibly talented lead actress,” Netflix’s Vice President International Original Film, David Kosse said. “We are looking forward to a great collaboration with Adam and the team at Indio and are confident that our members in Sweden and the rest of the world will enjoy this movie.”
Montero added, “As a Swede, you grow up knowing you live in a country of peace and equality, all in all life’s good and safe here. But lately, we have all learned how fragile our societies are due to pandemics, civil wars, global warming and economic chaos. How would it be to wake up one day in a totally destroyed and war-torn Sweden? Producing Black Crab is about flipping the coin and from a Scandinavian perspective show what happens to humanity when chaos arrives. It’s a big production and a great challenge and thanks to Netflix we can tell this Swedish story to a global audience.”

The film also marks Rapace’s first major Swedish film after 11 years since her breakout performance as Lisbeth Salander in 2009’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy which was based on Stieg Larsson’s novel series of the same name. Rapace’s other notable film credits include Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Prometheus, Child 44, and The Secrets We Keep.

According to Deadline, Golden Globe nominee Kristen Bell (The Good Place) and Tony nominee Jonathan Groff (Hamilton) have officially set up their first live-action teamed-up project as they have signed on for the leading roles in the upcoming original musical film titled Molly and the Moon. This marks Bell and Groff’s latest collaboration after starring together in Disney’s blockbuster animated films Frozen and Frozen II which have a combined gross of over $2 billion worldwide. The project hails from How I Met Your Mother creators and Emmy-nominated duo Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, who are also set to make their feature directorial debuts with the film.
RELATED: The Woman in the House: Kristen Bell to Star in Netflix Limited Series
Molly and the Moon is being described as a comedy musical fantasy drama which will center around a little girl named Molly and her parents Kate and Brian, who will be portrayed by Bell and Groff, respectively. The songs Kate and Brian will sing together become the North Star for Molly to find her way through a mythical world, toward the moon she instinctively feels is calling her.
The story is inspired by Thomas’ personal crisis concerning the birth of his son Elliot, who was born with a rare genetic condition that resulted in him getting several heart defects and open-heart surgery at only two weeks old.
“It’s all live-action; we really wanted to make it feel like the classic live-action fantasy movies of our childhood, things like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal,” Bays said. “As we were building off of this metaphor, it became, how do we show this journey? How do we visualize a soul trying to make it into the world? For us, it felt like the journey of climbing a mountain. Molly is this little girl and the moon in the movie represents being alive and participating in the world. It’s her journey, trying to get to the moon. Around that we built this magical fantasy world that we cut back and forth from, that interacts with the real world in surprising ways. We see the fantasy journey and the friends she makes along the way. There’s a knight in shining armor. There’s a talking bunny that she meets in the forest. There’s a monster that she has to face. It’s a real hero’s journey for her.”
Thomas added, “The meter of Molly Moon is sort of the same as Elliot. Musicals are always about the first moments that prove why they are musicals. Kate, our lead character, the mother, is singing a lullaby to her pregnant belly and will sort of push in on that pregnant belly and go into this other world where we see a mysterious little girl in a rowboat in the middle of the ocean, looking up at the moon and hearing that song, hearing that lullaby come through the moon. It’s the moment you realize there’s this little soul, this life that wants to exist and be in the world and wants to reach the sound of that voice. She doesn’t know what it means or who it is. It just sounds like love, and she wants to reach it, and that’s sort of the moment that we connect the two worlds of our movie, the world of Molly and the real world that her parents are living in.”
Thomas also revealed that the film will also be inspired by films such as Where The Wild Things Are, and Alice in Wonderland. He is hoping that by telling this story, he could honor his son and all the parents who have gone through or are currently experiencing the same difficult journey they’ve undergone.

Molly and the Moon will be directed by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays from a screenplay they co-wrote. Harvey Mason Jr. (Sing, Pitch Perfect films), Stephanie Diaz-Matos, and Nathan Larson have also boarded the project to serve as executive music producer, music supervisor, and composer, respectively. It will be produced by Jared Ian Goldman, Renee Witt and Jamal Daniel with Tory Metzger set as a producer.

When Thor: Ragnarok opened in 2017, it notably omitted a handful of supporting characters from the previous two Thor movies. One of the missing cast members was Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis, who served as a primary source of comic relief in the earlier films. Later this year, Dennings will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Disney+’s WandaVision series. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like this will lead to more adventures in the God of Thunder’s orbit (via SuperHeroHype).

Entertainment Tonight recently caught up with Dennings ahead of WandaVision’s premiere. Naturally, she couldn’t reveal much about her role in the upcoming series. But when asked whether she will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, Dennings made her doubts known.
“No, still no idea!” said Dennings. “I don’t think I’m in it. I feel like I would have heard by now. So literally my answer is I have no idea, I have even less an idea than I did before.”
Last month, Chris Hemsworth said that Love and Thunder will start production in January. So if Taika Waititi wanted to include Dennings, he probably would have reached out to her already. Regardless, one character who is definitely coming back is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. She will make her debut as the Mighty Thor in the film. And even if she isn’t involved, Dennings is still excited to watch this story play out onscreen.
“I thought it was genius, the most genius thing I had ever heard,” added Dennings. “I think it’s so brilliant. I mean, [Portman], you know, she’s a rock star actor, she can do anything. As a fan, I’m just excited to watch it.”
