In an either surprising change of audiences’ desires or actual practicality regarding the global pandemic and uncertain safety of visiting a theater, our readers have made their thoughts known that they’d prefer to see the return of Gal Gadot’s Amazonian superhero on WarnerMedia’s hit new streaming platform HBO Max, though a large group still prove to want to see it in a theater, either this Christmas or next summer.

Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big-screen adventure finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah. With director Patty Jenkins back at the helm and Gal Gadot returning in the title role, Wonder Woman 1984 is Warner Bros. Pictures’ follow up to the DC Super Hero’s first outing, 2017’s record-breaking Wonder Woman.

The film also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Max Lord, Robin Wright as Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta. Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, and Stephen Jones are producing the film. Rebecca Steel Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Marianne Jenkins, Geoff Johns, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo, and Wesley Coller are the executive producers. Patty Jenkins directed from a screenplay she wrote with Geoff Johns & David Callaham, story by Jenkins & Johns, based on characters from DC.

The sequel was originally intended to be released in 2019 but was then delayed to June 5, 2020. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, the film was then pushed back to two times to August and October before finally landing on its current December 25, 2020 release.

Universal Pictures & Cinemark Theaters Reach Release Window Agreement

Building on the two companies’ shared commitment to the theatrical experience, while capitalizing on the opportunity to further adapt to changing consumer behavior, particularly in light of the current COVID-19 environment, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, a division of Comcast Corporation, and Cinemark Holdings, Inc. today announced a multi-year agreement under which UFEG films will be exhibited in Cinemark theaters in the U.S.

The agreement includes at least three full weekends (17 days) of theatrical exclusivity for all Universal Pictures and Focus Features theatrical releases, at which time the studio will have the option to make its titles available across premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms. Under the terms of the deal, any title that opens to $50 million or more, including many franchise titles, will play exclusively in theaters for at least five full weekends (31 days) before the title may become available on PVOD.

“Universal’s century-long partnership with exhibition is rooted in the theatrical experience, and we are more committed than ever for audiences to experience our movies on the big screen,” said Donna Langley, Chairman, UFEG. “Mark Zoradi and the team at Cinemark have been outstanding partners, and Peter Levinsohn [Vice Chairman & Chief Distribution Officer, UFEG] has done a remarkable job on the studio’s behalf in making deals that give us the confidence to release our movies in the marketplace, keep the content pipeline moving, and provide consumers with the optionality that they are looking for.”

“We are extremely pleased to further enhance our strong partnership with Universal as we evolve the exclusive theatrical window,” said Mark Zoradi, Cinemark CEO. “We believe a more dynamic theatrical window, whereby movie theaters continue to provide an event-sized launching platform for films that maximize box office and bolsters the success of subsequent distribution channels, is in the shared best interests of studios, exhibitors and, most importantly, moviegoers.”

The full terms of the deal are confidential and are not being disclosed.

UFEG’s film slate, including titles from Universal Pictures, Focus Features and DreamWorks Animation, has five theatrical releases remaining on the 2020 calendar: The Croods: A New Age (11/25), Half Brothers (12/4), All My Life (12/4), News of the World (12/25) and Promising Young Woman (12/25).

Disneyland offers early look at new attractions, including Marvel

As the IAAPA Expo: Virtual Education Conference gets underway, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Josh D’Amaro has unveiled behind-the-scenes looks at upcoming attractions guests can look forward to at the various Disneyland parks in the future, including the highly-anticipated Marvel-themed coasters and lands. “Our properties have been likened into small cities,” D’Amaro said in the presentation. “Walt Disney World property is nearly twice the size of Manhattan. We have a bus fleet the size of Atlanta. And if we counted all the boats at Walt Disney World, we’d have the seventh largest naval fleet in the world. But unlike a real city, we can choreograph the procedures under which we actually operate. We can manage and control attendance, enforce protocols and adjust operations specifically to our business and our experience, and attractions can be modified to comply with safety recommendations.

“When your foundation is rocked, but that foundation shows that it can withstand constant tremors, when your guests show their passion and yearning for your experiences, even when the gates are closed, when your cast members accomplish things in one week that would normally take a year, when you realize that the unthinkable or the impossible, or very much possible, then you have to ask yourself — what’s next?” D’Amaro continued. “Where can we go from here in the world that we find ourselves in today? Optimism, innovation, and courage — they will ultimately win the day. And at Disney, we aim high. At a recent town hall meeting, I had some Imagineers that I was speaking to, and I included my presentation with a simple call to action — I dare you. I dare you to dream bigger and differently. I dare you to say what you’ve always wanted to say. I dare you to throw out that dogma that has sometimes acting increments, rather than exponentially. I dare you to make yourself weak in the knees. I dare you to dare yourself.”

D’Amaro revealed that progress is continuing on the highly-anticipated Avengers Campus at both the California and Paris resorts, with one of the first big attractions to come from the new zone being The Worldwide Engineering Brigade, also known as WEB, which will house the ride WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure in which guests will be able to board vehicles and help Spider-Man fight against an army of Spider-Bots taking over Avengers Campus.

Guests at Disneyland Paris will also be able to experience The Art of Marvel, celebrating 80 years of Marvel storytelling in a typical New York setting with Disney’s Hotel New York, which is reportedly eyeing a March 2021 opening. Florida’s Walt Disney World will soon see the end-result of the multi-year transformation of EPCOT, including the new nighttime spectacular “Harmonious,” while work still continues on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, both of which are estimated for 2021 openings!

The Florida resort is also preparing the opening of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, which will offer guests the opportunity to live aboard a starship for a two-day and two-night experience and will take part in an immersive experience as they become the heroes of their own Star Wars story and cruise the galaxy in style aboard the Halcyon, which is equipped with well-appointed cabins, onboard dining, planet-side excursions to Black Spire Outpost on Batuu and a lot more.

The Shanghai resort is currently working on “Zootopia,” the park’s eighth-themed land and the first of any Disney park to be based on the studio’s Oscar winning hit film and is set to include a major attraction that will blend Disney’s storytelling with state-of-the-art technology to bring the film and its characters to life. Tokyo Disneyland is currently developing its largest expansion in its 37-year history, which will include “Fantasy Springs,” a new themed land inspired by Disney Animation films including Frozen, Tangled and Peter Pan that will include four new attractions, three restaurants and a Disney-themed hotel situated inside Tokyo DisneySea overlooking the park.

Judd Apatow sets first streamer feature with untitled Netflix comedy

After working with Universal Pictures for the past 15 years on his feature directorial work, Judd Apatow (The King of Staten Island) is shaking things up and has set his next untitled comedy feature at Netflix, his first film for a streaming platform, according to Deadline.

A comedy about a group of actors and actresses stuck inside a pandemic bubble at a hotel attempting to complete a film, Apatow will direct, produce, and co-write the film with Pam Brady.

The project, which Apatow is directing, producing and co-writing with Pam Brady (Team America: World Police), will center on a group of actors and actresses struggling to complete a film while trapped in a hotel as part of the pandemic bubble. Though no cast members have currently been attached, sources report that the streaming platform is fast-tracking the project and is looking to meet with potential performers in the coming weeks and that the roster could rival that of the all-star hits Knives Out and The Disaster Artist.

Apatow made his feature directorial debut with 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which became a breakout hit for the comedian and established him as a powerhouse talent for Universal Pictures, following it up with hits Knocked Up, Trainwreck and The King of Staten Island, while also producing Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. The 52-year-old filmmaker has worked with Netflix in various capacities over the years, with cameos in Lady Dynamite and Sandy Wexler and acting as co-writer, co-creator and executive producer of Love.

Sources also report that Apatow’s shift to Netflix for the feature project instead of Universal stemmed from the streaming platform’s ability to get the production underway quicker while the latter is still determining which productions to fund in the midst of the pandemic.

Lynne Ramsay tapped to helm The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon adaptation

After acquiring the rights to Stephen King’s psychological horror novel earlier this year, Village Roadshow Pictures has tapped BAFTA winner Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here) to direct the film adaptation of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, according to Deadline.

Published in 1999, the story centers on 12-year-old Trisha McFarland when she strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail. While lost for days, she finds herself wandering farther and farther astray, relying on her portable radio for comfort. A huge fan of Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tom Gordon, Trisha listens to baseball games and fantasizes that her hero will save her, but also discovers that nature isn’t her only adversary as something dangerous is tracking her through the dark woods.

Jon Berg of Stampede Ventures is set to produce the project alongside It: Chapter Two and Doctor Sleep‘s Roy Lee of Vertigo, as well as Christine Romero, Night of the Living Dead‘s George A. Romero’s widow, and Origin Story’s Ryan Silbert, while Andrew Childs will serve as executive producer and Village Roadshow’s EVP of Content, Jillian Apfelbaum, overseeing development. Ramsay will be directing the film on a script co-written by her and Christy Hall (I Am Not Okay With This).

An adaptation of King’s psychological horror novel has been attempted for the past 15 years, beginning in 2005 with Romero being attached to write and direct, which stalled for years leading all the way up to his death in 2017. The project was revived last August with Romero’s production banner still attached along with Chris Romero through Sanibel Films.

Hall is best known for her work as executive producer and co-developer of Netflix’s adaptation of Charles Forsman’s comic book I Am Not Okay With This starring Sophia Lillis (It: Chapter Two, Gretel & Hansel), which scored rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Pandemic thriller Songbird forgoing theatrical release for digital

With theaters still mostly shut down across the country, STXfilms has announced that its forthcoming pandemic thriller Songbird will be skipping a theatrical release in favor of a premium video-on-demand debut in December followed by an unspecified streaming service in 2021.

In the terrifying thriller ​Songbird,​ the COVID-23 virus has mutated and the world is in its fourth year of lockdown. Infected Americans are ripped from their homes and forced into quarantine camps known as Q-Zones, from which there is no escape, as a few brave souls fight back against the forces of oppression. Amid this dystopian landscape, a fearless courier, Nico (KJ Apa), who’s immune to the deadly pathogen, finds hope and love with Sara (Sofia Carson), though her lockdown prohibits them from physical contact. When Sara is believed to have become infected, Nico races desperately across the barren streets of Los Angeles in search of the only thing that can save her from imprisonment … or worse.

In addition to KJ Apa and Sofia Carson, the call sheet for the film is said to feature an ensemble cast that includes Demi Moore (Corporate Animals), Bradley Whitford (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), Craig Robinson (What We Do in the Shadows), Alexandra Daddario (We Summon the Darkness), Paul Walter Hauser (Da 5 Bloods) and Peter Stormare (American Gods).

Songbird is directed by Adam Mason (Into the Dark) from a script written by Mason and Simon Boyes. Bay is producing alongside Adam Goodman and Andrew Eben Davidson of Invisible Narratives, who are also financing the project. The film is also produced by Catchlight Studios’ Jeanette Volturno, Jason Clark, and Marcei Brown with Michael Kase and Invisible Narratives’ Eben Davidson set as executive producers.

The film was the first to go into production in Los Angeles as the real pandemic lockdown was slowly lifted and the imposition of new safety restrictions made it possible for Hollywood to start slowly resume filming. Songbird is set to hit digital platforms for a 48-hour rental period on Friday, December 11, followed by a release on a major streaming service in 2021.

Michael B. Jordan’s Without Remorse pulled from Paramount schedule

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures has officially decided to remove their Michael B. Jordan-led Tom Clancy adaptation Without Remorse from their theatrical release schedule. Originally set to arrive in theaters on February 26, 2021, the thriller film is now reportedly eyeing for a streaming debut instead as Amazon Studios enters the final negotiations to acquire the film.

In addition, Paramount has also made some changes to their other films’ release date with How to Train Your Dragon director Dean Deblois’s upcoming live-action adaptation Micronauts also being removed from the current theatrical slate and vacating its previous June 4, 2021 release. Meanwhile, Lee Daniel’s The United States Vs. Billie Holiday has now been pushed back from February 12, 2021 to February 26, 2021.

Though not finalized, should the deal go through it would mark the third major film that Paramount has sold off to a streaming platform in the middle of the ongoing pandemic after the romantic comedy The Lovebirds and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 were both acquired by Netflix.

Jordan is set to play the role of Clancy hero John Clark, a recurring character in Clancy’s novels. Clark is an ex-Navy Seal who became a CIA operations officer. At first, he was a secondary character who helped Jack Ryan’s missions but the novel Without Remorse made him the lead and told his thrilling, yet tragic, origin tale. In the film, Clark seeks revenge after his girlfriend is killed by a Baltimore drug lord.

The film will be directed by Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) from a screenplay adapted by Taylor Sheridan. The cast also includes Jamie Bell (Jumper), Luke Mitchell (Blindspot), Cam Gigandet (Ice), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), Jack Kesy (Claws), and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead).

It will be produced by Jordan, Akiva Goldsman (Transformers), Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. Paramount Pictures is developing two film adaptations of Tom Clancy’s thriller novels Without Remorse and Rainbox Six with Jordan also set to star in the planned sequel.

John Clark has appeared in a number of Tom Clancy’s novels dating back to 1988’s The Cardinal and the Kremlin, as the darker side of the Jack Ryan character who works primarily in the field and typically operates by his own personal brand of ethics. The character was played by Willem Dafoe in Clear and Present Danger, starring Harrison Ford, and by Liev Schreiber in The Sum of All Fears starring Ben Affleck.

In the series adaptation from Scott Frank and Allan Scott, Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Beth Harmon, a young woman who has grown up during the 1950s and 1960s with unresolved trauma, an addiction problem she developed at nine years old, and an uncanny knack for chess — a game that she eventually admits allows her to feel a sense of control. Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, The Queen’s Gambit is a gripping coming-of-age story of chess, addiction, and feminism, full of relatable and complex characters that will tear your heart out. The stunning performances, gorgeous visuals, and engaging writing must be noted, but more than anything I appreciated the essential and raw focus on addiction as we watch Beth grow dependent on the green tranquilizers her new home at the orphanage gives the children (which had me screaming at the screen), and how that develops the older she gets. Not just a character study, the story also gives a fascinating inside look at the world of competitive chess, which might give you more appreciation for something many consider just a simple board game.

With the entertainment industry still struggling to get back to delivering entertainment to audiences, now seems like the ultimate time to go back and see behind-the-scenes of the chaos of Hollywood’s inner workings in HBO’s Entourage. Loosely based on executive producer Mark Wahlberg’s own experiences as an up-and-coming star, the comedy series centers on an on-the-rise star as he navigates his career alongside brother and struggling actor Johnny “Drama” Chase, best bud and manager Eric “E” Murphy, good friend Salvatore “Turtle” Assante and agent Ari Gold. There may be a mild air of misogyny in the characters and their actions, but there’s a real charm to be had watching their journeys, especially in seeing the incorporation of real studios, celebrity cameos and clever spoofs of real Hollywood execs, and the outrageous antics of Jeremy Piven’s explosive agent, making for an endlessly entertaining ride from start to finish, even in its fairly weaker final seasons.

Starring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt, the film centers around the Baker family, composed of Tom and Kate Baker along with their twelve children. Due to Tom’s new job opportunity, they have no other choice but to move the whole family to a new town. However, things get more difficult when Kate also gets a career milestone of her own that would require her to leave the kids for a while. Because of this, Tom confidently took on the challenge of taking care of their children as well as other household responsibilities in order for Kate to follow her dreams. However, Tom will soon realize that he has signed up for more than what he bargained for as he struggles to find the time to balance the high demands from his new job while being an only parent to twelve kids, who are having a hard time adjusting to their new home.

Cheaper by the Dozen was based on Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey’s 1948 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. This 2003 family comedy film is definitely a delight to watch and a must-see film during the holidays. In addition to its charming and entertaining story, Steve Martin’s chemistry with the film’s young cast didn’t fail to bring in the laughs. Despite having a poor critical performance, the Shawn Levy-directed film was still able to gain a worldwide gross of more than $190 million against a reported $40 million budget. Even though the film didn’t appeal much to the critics, I believe that it better caters to young audiences, who will find themselves relating to the Baker kids’ chaotic energy, especially if they belong to big families.

So, if you’re looking for something fun and easy to watch, I highly-recommend you to check out or revisit Cheaper by the Dozen!

It’s been years since I’ve watch Ron Howard’s Ransom, mainly because you can’t find the damned thing anywhere. It’s available for Blu-ray, sure, but currently absent from any and all streaming services for rent or purchase. (Can we get a 4K version, please?) Luckily, I stumbled upon my dusty old, scratch-infested DVD copy of the flick and got the film working long enough to enjoy this potboiler centered around a kidnapping. Mel Gibson, perhaps in the height of his superstardom right after Braveheart and just before Lethal Weapon 4 and The Patriot, stars and whoa boy does the actor deliver in one of his strongest, most emotionally charged performances. However, the real MVP of the pic is Gary Sinise, here, too, at his peak (right after the one-two punch of Forrest Gump, Apollo 13 and just before Snake Eyes, Reindeer Games and, gulp, Mission to Mars), who delivers a sinister portrayal of a man doing a very bad thing for very personal reasons. His scenes with Gibson in which the two engage in over-the-phone, F-bomb laced shouting matches are thrilling to watch; and Howard directs with the same intense-fueled flare he brought to Apollo 13. Sure, the film is never as good as it probably should be, but as a weekend flick for the thrill-seeking crowd, you can’t do much better.
