Last year saw Neil Marshall and David Harbour’s reboot of the Hellboy film franchise receiving a very divisive response from critics and fans, with many of the negative reviews lamenting the lack of Guillermo del Toro’s magic from the previous two films, and it appears star Ron Perlman felt the very same way.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie for Run With the Hunted, the 70-year-old actor revealed that he was actually offered the opportunity to return to the titular role, but without having the two-time Oscar winner writing and directing, he wasn’t interested in coming back.
“The only thing that’s stopping the third Hellboy film is the fact that Guillermo [del Toro] is one of the busiest guys in the business,” Perlman said. “He couldn’t do it with all the stuff he’s got lined up even if wanted to. The two films had nothing to do with one another. The reboot was something I had the opportunity to participate in and decided that the only version of Hellboy I’m interested in is the one I do with Guillermo and so in walking away from it, I truly walked away from it, and haven’t seen it or heard much about it. I wished them well, but it was not in my bailiwick.“
Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) directed from a script by Andrew Cosby (Eureka), Christopher Golden and the character’s creator, Mike Mignola. Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin produced with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment.

Hellboy was unleashed in theaters on April 12, 2019 to very unfavorable reviews from critics and mixed-to-positive reviews from audiences, with many unfavorably comparing the film to del Toro (The Shape of Water)’s previous adaptations of the source material while also criticizing its story, but praising the practical effects and performances from Harbour and Jovovich.

IFC Films has announced they will release their biographical drama Tesla, starring Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Training Day), in theaters and On Demand on August 21.
RELATED: IFC Films Sets American Release of The Painted Bird
The film, written, directed, and produced by Michael Almerevda (Hamlet), follows inventor Nikola Tesla (Hawke) as he fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition. Increasingly displeased by the greed of fellow inventor Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan, Twin Peaks), Tesla forges his own virtuous but arduous path toward creating the innovative alternate-current motor. His European nature is at odds with budding American industrialism and the landscape of intellectual property is treacherous and Tesla slowly becomes jailed in his overactive mind. His associate, Anne Morgan (Eve Hewson, The Knick), analyzes and presents his story as it unfolds, offering a distinctly modern voice in this scientific period drama.
In addition to Hawke, Hewson, and MacLachlan, the cast for Tesla features Jim Gaffigan (The Jim Gaffigan Show) as entrepreneur George Westinghouse, Donnie Keshawarz (The Wolf of Wall Street), Rebecca Dayan (Celeste & Jesse Forever), Josh Hamilton (Eighth Grade) and Lucy Walters (Power).

Tesla is produced by IFC Films alongside Millennium Media, Uri Singer of Passage Pictures, Christa Campbell and Lati Grobham of Campbell-Grobman Films and Isen Robbins of Intrinsic Value Films.

Now that Universal Pictures has come up with a safety plan to resume production on Jurassic World: Dominion, it seems that a new actor has joined the cast. According to Collider, Campbell Scott will portray Lewis Dodgson, a character whom Jurassic Park novels fans will remember as the head of research at Biosyn, a rival of InGen. In both Michael Crichton’s books, Dodgson was one of the main villains. According to the reports, Dodgson got a promotion before the events of Dominion, and he is now the CEO of Biosyn Genetics.
Actor Cameron Thor portrayed the character in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster, but the movie downplayed Dodgson’s role. He merely made a cameo, bribing Wayne Knight’s Dennis Nedry to steal the fertilized dinosaur embryos. Thor’s problems with the law forced Universal Pictures to recast the role.
Scott’s credits include portraying Richard Parker on the big screen in the Amazing Spider-Man movies.

Lewis Dodgson isn’t the only character from Jurassic Park to make his return in Dominion. Original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum will reprise their roles as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Alan Grant, and Dr. Ian Malcolm, respectively. And perhaps, all these returns are connected someway. Jurassic World: Dominion production is expected to reprise at Pinewood Studios in early July.
Jurassic World: Dominion opens in theaters on June 11, 2021.

Though a box office disappointment upon release, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has been one of the most celebrated graphic novel adaptations of the last decade amongst fans and critics and though a sequel isn’t going to happen, the co-writer/director has revealed there may be a new avenue for the material. (Via Slash Film)
RELATED: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Will Return To Theaters For Its 10th Anniversary
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the film’s 10th anniversary, Wright revealed that though a live-action sequel is definitely not going to happen, he and the source material’s creator Bryan Lee O’Malley have been cooking up something else.
“There’s some plans — and there’s nothing official yet — but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way,” Wright said. “We’ve been talking with Bryan and with Jared for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak.”
This exciting tidbit comes on the heels of the announcement in May that the cult classic action comedy would be returning to theaters to celebrate its anniversary, which was originally set to hit theaters in August, though said re-release has been postponed indefinitely due to the global pandemic.

The film starred Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, a young man who falls hard for Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Ramona Flowers. But to win Ramona’s heart, Scott has to face her seven evil exes, including Lucas Lee (Chris Evans), Todd Ingram (Brandon Routh), Roxy Richter (Mae Whitman), and Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzman). Alison Brie also appears as Scott’s evil ex, Envy Adams, alongside Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.

Last year, Jai Courtney became the first Suicide Squad cast member to join James Gunn’s upcoming film, proving that it wasn’t going to be a hard reboot of the franchise. Although the new movie retains some connectivity to David Ayer’s original film, it goes without saying that Ayer and Gunn have different directing styles. While speaking with Variety, Courtney discussed how he adjusted to James Gunn’s approach to The Suicide Squad.
“I think it’s kind of got a different flavor,” said Courtney. “There’s a whole bunch of new characters. James Gunn has an approach to things that is uniquely his; he pulls a lot of that into the Suicide Squad world. And I think that it fits really well, and audiences are going to have a lot of fun with it.”
Much of Gunn’s film is still shrouded in secrecy. The Suicide Squad boasts a plethora of new characters making their DC movie debut. But save for a few exceptions, there’s still some mystery about who the new cast members will portray. Since the sequel’s release is still over a year away, Courtney couldn’t divulge any story details. However, he did share an interesting anecdote about filming a scene that involved the use of a water tank.
RELATED: Guardians of the Galaxy’s Tyler Bates Will Score The Suicide Squad
“I won’t to say too much, but there’s a particular sequence when I get very wet,” related Courtney. “And a few other people do, and hilarity ensued when it came to that. When you’re spending hours upon hours in a water tank with a bunch of people treading water, and you’ve got Styrofoam stuffed into every crevice of your costume to try and take the load off and because it’s 4am, it gets quite ridiculous.”
“I am lucky that sometimes I’m making these small-budget gritty dramas like Stateless,” continued Courtney. “And sometimes I’m out shooting big ridiculous action comedies like Suicide Squad. To have feet on both of those trains is a lot of fun — and it also means that I never get tired of it.”
The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
Are you excited to see what James Gunn brought to the sequel? Do you have any theories about the water tank sequence? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!

Jon Stewart was one of the most prolific and informative voices in the political world for over 15 years as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and after making his directorial debut with the thrilling and powerful Rosewater, he’s back in his original comedic wheelhouse with the timely but unfortunately only mildly funny political satire Irresistible.
After the Democratic National Committee’s top strategist Gary (Steve Carell) sees a video of a retired Marine colonel (Chris Cooper) standing up for the rights of his town’s undocumented workers, Gary believes he has found the key to winning back the Heartland. However, the Republican National Committee counters him by sending in his brilliant nemesis Faith (Rose Byrne) and a local race quickly becomes a fight for the soul of America.
The film’s setup is brilliant and well-timed as America prepares itself for another divisive presidential election and while Stewart and his successor Trevor Noah are well-known for reacting with plenty of energy and well-researched retorts to headlines, the 57-year-old writer/director reins it in with this project and it initially works. In portraying both sides of the aisle, no one is safe from his pointed insight, from democratic elite talking down to a demographic they so clearly need and republican strategists unafraid to alter facts as needed to win a campaign.
This satire initially proves genius and relatively funny, but as the film progresses, it finds itself waning and unable to blend its attempts at more audience-friendly humor, with Carrell’s fish-out-of-water Gary revisiting a number of tropes his character type has previously been used for in better fashion. That’s not to say that all of this humor is uninteresting, as some of it works and even some of the weaker material still warrants a smile or a chuckle, but in trying to rein in his anger towards the Republican party and the presidency of Donald Trump, there’s no real edge to it. The closest viewers get to some sharp humor is crass barbs between Gary and Faith which, while generally funny, comes nowhere close to properly using their genre gifts, instead relying on loud arguments and bets over sexual favors before returning to its serious-natured satire.
RELATED: CS Video: Irresistible Interview with Chris Cooper & Mackenzie Davis!
Despite clearly having done additional research on everything from political strategists to the easily corruptible nature of political action committees, the story can’t quite find any interesting path to take this important information. Chris Cooper’s Jack Hastings giving a speech on the government’s broken system of trying to prevent voter fraud with undocumented workers without giving them an appropriate system to become documented citizens is moving and incredibly timely, especially given the current president’s claims of voter fraud leading up to and after his election, but it feels like the only really interesting story thread. Middle and rural America is an area not often explored when diving into politics and Stewart attempts to properly spotlight it and show their more progressive way of thinking, and though he occasionally taps into this goal nicely, it’s an effort that still overall falls flat.
Where some of the film’s humor and storytelling falters, it is frequently saved by the performances of its thoroughly talented ensemble, namely Cooper in a role we’ve frequently seen him take on but yet he shines in every time. The 68-year-old Oscar and Golden Globe winner has always been great at tapping into the soul of the American midwest, but in the role of Jack Hastings, it feels like an angle not previously seen from him. He brings to life a new form of the heart of America, one which seeks to bridge the gap between the often-conservative generation of the past and the more-liberal generation of the future, and it results in one of the warmest and most charming performances of his career.
Irresistible could’ve benefitted from some more rage from its writer/director in its scripting and humor and figuring a better path for some of its political satire than its late-in-the-game plot twist, but thanks to warm direction, generally charming performances and some rich humor, it proves to be a mildly entertaining affair.

Woa boy! Is it weird that I feel an overwhelming sense of joy whenever I see a new title take the top spot on DEG’s Watched at Home Top 20 list? Hopefully, the three of you that read these articles feel the same way because this week finally sees the fall of Sonic the Hedgehog!
That’s right, fellow couch potatoes — the little blue furry guy got trumped by The Invisible Man. Universal’s terrific update of its classic invisible fella property has had one helluva run. Initially, the flick didn’t even appear on this list. Then, a few weeks ago, the Elisabeth Moss hit suddenly jumped into the Top 10 and slowly made its way to No. 1. No one saw it coming.
Sonic still remained at No. 2, followed by long holdover Jumanji: The Next Level and — hold the phone! Stop the presses! Yellowstone: Season 1? Look, I may criticize you guys for having the audacity to propel Bloodshot to No. 1, but today I’m actually proud. Yellowstone is a damned fine show; and I’m happy people are starting to recognize it as such.
The rest of the list consists of the same titles, just in different order. I’m genuinely shocked to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on this list after all these weeks, and considering it dropped off completely about a month ago.
Kudos for keeping Harry Potter alive. Ten points to you all!
1. The Invisible Man (Universal, 2020)
2. Sonic the Hedgehog (Paramount)
3. Jumanji: The Next Level (Sony)
