Hulu’s Books of Blood Trailer: All Stories End Here

Hulu has released the official Books of Blood trailer for Brannon Braga’s upcoming film adaptation of Clive Barker’s classic horror anthology novel series. Premiering on Wednesday, October 7, the film follows a journey into uncharted territory through three tales tangled in space and time. You can check out the trailer now in the player below!

Consisting of six books published between 1984-85, the anthology which mostly covered the horror genre with the occasional fantasy element mixed in, received rave reviews from critics and readers alike, with legend Stephen King calling Barker the “future of horror.” Some of the film’s individual stories have already been adapted for the big and small screen, namely “The Forbidden,” which became the cult classic Candyman, and The Midnight Meat Train.

Braga is set to co-write, executive produce and direct in his feature debut with The Girlfriend Experience‘s Anna Friel, Under the Dome‘s Britt Robertson, Godfather of Harlem‘s Rafi Gavron, and Russian Doll‘s Yul Vazquez all signed on to star in the film. Adam Simon, co-creator of WGN’s Salem, is also attached to co-write the project, which will blend together three tales from the books in an overarching narrative that also features original material.

Friel is attached to play Mary, a brilliant psychologist who has gained fame as a skeptic debunking theories and beliefs not based in science who is struggling with the loss of her 7-year-old son to leukemia and has a change of heart when her new lover Simon convinces her he can speak her dead son. Robertson is attached as Jenna, a hypersensitive girl who suffers from “misphonia,” an abhorrence of sound, and sets out for Los Angeles when she learns her mother is about to send her back to the “Farm.”

Gavron will star as Simon, a charismatic young man who begins a relationship with Mary and convinces her he is a ghost whisperer and can speak for her dead son. Vazquez will portray Bennett, a professional killer whose latest target tells him of a priceless book that will allow him and his wife to retire, only to come across supernatural threats in his journey for the book.

Sarah Paulson-Led Run Gets Premiere Date at Hulu

After acquiring the rights to the Sarah Paulson-starring horror-thriller from Lionsgate last month, Hulu has debuted a new teaser for Aneesh Chaganty’s Run, which also reveals a November 20 premiere date! The teaser can be viewed in the player below!

In Run, they say you can never escape a mother’s love… but for Chloe, that’s not a comfort — it’s a threat. There’s something unnatural, even sinister about the relationship between Chloe (Allen) and her mom, Diane (Paulson). Diane has raised her daughter in total isolation, controlling every move she’s made since birth, and there are secrets that Chloe’s only beginning to grasp. From the visionary writers, producers, and director of the breakout film Searching, comes a suspense thriller that shows that when mom gets a little too close, you need to RUN.

“We’re super excited audiences will get to stream Run on Hulu, a platform that’s really committed to giving the movie the same, big splash that was always intended for it,” Chaganty previously said in a statement. “Plus, the film is about a girl who’s been quarantined at home her whole life; watching it the same way should be a fitting experience in 2020.”

Chaganty co-wrote the screenplay with his Searching co-writer Sev Ohanian. The project is produced by Ohanian and Natalie Qasabian.

The movie was initially set for a May 8 release but was delayed along with many other titles due to the ongoing global pandemic. A new Hulu premiere date has not yet been announced. Run will reportedly also be released theatrically in select international markets.

The writer/director first got acclaim with his viral video Seeds, which racked up more than a million views in under 24 hours on YouTube. Filmed with Google Glass, the video got him invited to join Google Creative Labs, where he spent two years developing commercials for the tech giant.

Maestro: Carey Mulligan joins Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic

According to Deadline, Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education) has signed on for the leading role in Bradley Cooper’s next directorial project titled Maestro, centering around the marriage between award-winning composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre. On top of directing, the Oscar-nominated actor will also be starring in the upcoming Netflix film with Mulligan set to portray the role of Felicia.

“I was struck by Carey ever since I saw her on stage many years ago and I haven’t missed a performance of hers since,” Cooper said in a statement. “I am humbled to be working with such a mammoth talent, as well as such a kind person in Carey.”

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Carey Mulligan will play our mother in Maestro,” one of the children of Leonard and Felicia Bernstein, Jamie Bernstein said. “Carey will surely capture Felicia’s unique combination of wit, warmth, elegant beauty, and depth of emotion. We also love the way Carey conveys a kind of storybook European grace, which was something our mother embodied as well.”

Maestro will span over 30 years in telling the beautifully complex story of the marriage between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. Bernstein’s colorful life included making a memorable conducting debut at the New York Philharmonic at 25 when the conductor took ill. Without even rehearsing, Bernstein did so well his star was launched the next day when his feat made the front page of the New York Times. He was blacklisted before being cleared of being a communist just before he composed the Oscar-nominated score for On the Waterfront, and he was an activist in the civil rights movement, and outspoken on issues including ending the Vietnam War.

Cooper’s main focus on the project has always been the “charged and complex relationship” between Bernstein and Montealegre. The star and filmmaker has reportedly been working closely with Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander, and Nina, over the past couple of years.

Maestro is co-written by Cooper and Josh Singer with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Cooper, and his Joint Effort producing partner Todd Phillips (Joker), Kristie Macosko Krieger, Oscar-nominated producer Emma Tilliinger Koskoff (The Irishman, Joker), and Fred Berner and Amy Durning set as producers.

Paramount is no longer involved with the project. Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is still attached. Production on the drama is expected to begin early next year. The streamer will give the film a significant theatrical release before it moves exclusively to Netflix.

Ron Howard tapped to direct Lang Lang Biopic

While the two-time Oscar winner is busy developing a drama about the Tham Luang cave rescue for MGM, Ron Howard has found another new project in the form of a biopic centered on acclaimed Chinese pianist Lang Lang, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on Lang and David Ritz’s memoir Journey of a Thousand Miles, the untitled biopic will chart the musician’s incredible life story from his childhood in the provincial city of Shenyang in Northern China to the peak of the modern global classic music industry, all the while his family sacrifices almost everything to help their son succeed.

“Dream big, work hard, and always believe in yourself,” Lang said in a statement. “This movie, thanks to Ron Howard’s vision, will inspire young people around the world to follow their dreams and never forget they are one in a million.”

Michelle and Kieran Mulroney (Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows) are attached to adapt the memoir for the screen, with Brian Grazer set to produce the film via his and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment production banner, while Lang and Jean-Jacques Cesbron will executive produce with Polygram Entertainment’s Michele Anthony and David Blackman. Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios are attached to finance the project.

“Lang Lang’s story is one of determination, passion, sacrifice, and finding the inner strength to beat the odds,” Grazer and Howard said in a joint statement. “This film is a bridge between two cultures that share universal truths about the gauntlets we face in the pursuit of greatness.”

While Howard is currently awaiting to begin production on the Thai cave story, Thirteen Lives, he is planning to begin production on the Lang biopic shortly after in China and the U.S. with both Mandarin and English dialogue.

Each of the four prints represents a director that was able to turn his hand to any style within the genre, from classic suspense in 1978’s iconic slasher Halloween to the social commentary of the 1988 cult classic sci-fi action pic They Live, as well as a film that refined archetypes of hero and damsel in distress with 1986’s Big Trouble in Little China to all-out dystopian action with 1981’s Escape From New York.

As an added bonus with the special prints, Raid71 is also offering fans a rare prototype model of Charlie Ash, a 4.5-inch handprinted figure with a design based on the Sam Raimi-created and Bruce Campbell-performed character from the horror-comedy franchise Evil Dead.

Studiocanal has released the official trailer for director Harry Macqueen’s forthcoming drama film titled Supernova, featuring award-winning actors Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci as they portray a long-time couple who must now face an uncertain future following Tucci’s character getting diagnosed with dementia. In Supernova, It is deep Autumn and Sam and Tusker, partners of twenty years, are on holiday. Their time together is now the most important thing they have. As the trip progresses however, their individual ideas for their future begin to collide. Secrets are uncovered, private plans unravel and their love for each other is tested like never before. Ultimately, they must confront the question of what it means to love one another in the face of Tusker’s irreparable illness.

The film is being led by Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Emmy winner Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones). It will also feature James Dreyfus, Pippa Haywood, and Sarah Woodward.

CS Soapbox: Why Batman Doesn’t Kill

In DC Comics’ Batman #4 (1940), Batman tells Robin, “we never kill with weapons of any kind.” Thus implemented the hotly debated rule that Batman would not use guns or lethal force. In the issues that preceded Batman #4, Batman did carry guns and kill. However, in less than 2 years after his debut, the caped crusader’s creators, Bob Kane and Bill Finger (mostly Finger) decided that their aristocratic, hyper-intelligent vigilante would not carry a gun or kill (a rule DC had already applied to Superman).

This shift in the character’s core philosophy happened fairly quickly in retrospect. In 1939, Batman had yet to become a fully-formed character in a medium yet-to-be understood or properly utilized. The Dark Knight’s origin story, involving the brutal murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents didn’t even manifest itself until around 6 months after Batman was capping vampires with silver bullets on the page (yeah). That said, Thomas and Martha Wayne, who despised violent criminals, catalyze Bruce’s motivations and that of his creators (again, mostly Finger).

The “no-kill rule” continues to frustrate casual fans. Gotham City would arguably be a safer/better place if Batman just ended the Joker once and for all. Because of this, there are plenty of stories where Batman does kill, but most of those stories contradict the heart of who Batman is. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the character is essentially a mass murderer, seeking justice however he sees fit (machine gunning criminals with the Batmobile, fatal brandings, etc.). That film’s director, Zack Snyder, has openly criticized fans who think superheroes shouldn’t kill, saying that a Batman who isn’t allowed to use lethal force lives in a “dream world.” As you may recall, Snyder’s Clark Kent AKA Superman broke Zod’s neck in Man of Steel, something that upset fans (and was condemned by Christopher Nolan), but wasn’t as incendiary as Batfleck’s brutality—which is far more dangerous than Superman’s laser eyes.

Inspired by characters like Sherlock Holmes, Batman has earned himself the mantel of the “World’s Greatest Detective.” He’s a thinker: driven, obsessive, and consumed by a desire to honor the legacy of his parents. Batman’s fortitude is the reason people often argue that, with enough prep time, he could defeat anyone or anything. To kill would be to admit defeat or take an easy path, and that’s not who Bruce/Batman is. The consequences of “admitting defeat” are perhaps best explored in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s The Batman Who Laughs miniseries.

The Batman Who Laughs: The Grim Knight #1 outlines the origin story of Bruce Wayne in a parallel universe. In this Gotham, when Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered in Crime Alley, a young Bruce picks up the gun and shoots their murderer. Thus beginning the career of a much more sinister Batman, one more equatable to the Punisher, and ultimately, the Joker, than the Dark (yet not this dark) Knight we know and love.

The early days of the Grim Knight’s career is successful: he defeats everyone—from crime families to growing supervillains (even killing a maniac in an Ace Chemical plant). For a while, the police support him, all but one, Jim Gordon. In this universe, Batman and Gordon are far from friends. The Grim Knight’s mission turns Gotham into a totalitarian state where everyone is under constant surveillance (he even puts chips in people’s necks to force their obedience). The Grim Knight not only kills those “convicted” of crimes but those accused as well. Eventually, Gordon and Alfred defeat Batman, proving that the “no-kill rule” keeps Bruce from losing his faith in humanity.

Co-creator Kane has openly criticized Batman’s “no kill rule.” In his autobiography, Batman and Me, he said that Batman “wasn’t the Dark Knight anymore with all the censorship.” However, Kane has also acknowledged that the character’s lighter (and sometimes campy) tone early on helped him to become the iconic he is today. Besides, a hero without a moral compass, killing under the guise of “the greater good” excuse, is an anti-hero/villain but never a superhero. The latter argument has been made vehemently by Finger, the man who deserves the most credit for the caped crusader’s characteristics. 

The brutal origin story Finger wrote for Batman taught Bruce to cherish life and hate criminals. In Batman #47 (1948), Finger has Batman come face-to-face with his parents’ murderer, Joe Chill. Rather than kill him, Batman reveals to him his identity, hoping to provoke a confession (so that Chill can face due process). In a panic, Chill reveals the role in played in Batman’s creation to his henchman, who ultimately gun him down. Not only does Batman take no pleasure in Chill’s death, but he brings his killers to justice. 

In his Dark Knight trilogy Christopher Nolan paints Bruce/Batman in a similar light. Batman Begins follows Bruce, years after his parents’ murder, as he takes a pistol to Chill’s (who was convicted for murdering the Waynes) parole hearing, only to see him gunned down in the courthouse by Carmine Falcone’s triggerman. After a meeting with Falcone, Bruce throws his gun into the river, and leaves Gotham, vowing never to stoop to the level of those ruining his home, and in turn, his parents’ legacy.

We don’t watch/read superhero stories to feel dejection. Proponents of grounding superheroes in overt realism are missing the point of the genre people like Finger helped define. To quote Christian Bale from Batman Begins, “people need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I’m flesh and blood, I can be ignored, I can be destroyed; but as a symbol… as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting.” Striving towards this paradigm creates emotionally resonant drama. By struggling with his morality, Batman’s character/story becomes a dramatized reflection of the type of conflict most of us experience daily to do the “right” thing, whatever that may mean for them.  

There’s nothing gained by forcing overt cynicism/pragmatism into a world where men wear tights and can fly. There’s no real message. No hope. Great art is meant to entertain, inform, and inspire. Batman’s code, like Captain American or Superman’s, isn’t just about being a role model (maybe it is?). Batman’s code, in the face of true darkness, masquerades as unwavering altruism. However, Bruce Wayne doesn’t kill for a much more selfish reason. Bruce had his parents and his idyllic life taken from him. By cleaning up the street of Gotham without killing, he’s besting Death, which in his mind, is the real enemy. He knows that through death, there can never be the type of life he wanted for himself or his city. Happy Batman Day!
