CS Interview: Orlando Arocena on Designing Ghost in the Shell 4K Steelbook

CS Interview: Orlando Arocena on Designing Ghost in the Shell 4K Steelbook

To celebrate Lionsgate’s 25th Anniversary 4K release of Ghost in the Shell, ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to speak with the steelbook creator Orlando Arocena, aka MexiFunk. You can order your copy here (the steelbook is only available at Best Buy) and check out the interview and the steelbook art below!

RELATED: Exclusive Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Clip From the New Animated Adventure

The national release features fan-favorite commemorative artwork from pop illustrator Martin Ansin. A small run of the poster was initially printed on iridescent foil and given to the attendance of a special 25th Anniversary screening of Ghost in the Shell during MondoCon.

The steelbook, created by Orlando Arocena, came about after the studio approached Arocena to create the art for the steelbook and discovered that he is one of the biggest Ghost in the Shell fans out there. He initially built Major Kusanagi’s exoskeleton for Lionsgate to use on the steelbook but felt, in order to pay homage to the film, he’d create a second piece of art with more of her outer shell that could slide on and off via a semi-transparent slipcover.

RELATED: Lionsgate Acquires Kevin Coughlin & Ryan Grassby’s Mother Land

ComingSoon.net: What was your first experience with Ghost in the Shell? Whether it was the comics, TV series, movies, toys, anything!

Orlando Arocena: My first experience with Ghost in the Shell was actually back in the ‘90s. I was studying Art and Communication Design at Pratt Institute- Brooklyn Campus. I was already a huuuuuge fan of Masamune Shirow’s magna and story plots. I fell in love with his previous Black Magic Mario M-66 (Anime and Manga) and also the classic pop culture favorite – Appleseed!!! So when Dark Horse released Ghost in the Shell in 1989, I immediately had to run and hunt it down! Then, when the anime was later released in 1996, I literally had to be the first in line to see it on the big screen!

CS: How do you think the first GitS is special in the realm of anime?

Arocena: The first Ghost in the Shell is special in the world of anime because it actually does a great job of combining the traditional hand-produced (drawn and painted) cels with a bit of computer graphics and animation. All of those green-digital cutaways during the creation story of the Major – although not as extravagant as what we have today, it was still (for that time) pretty impressive to see within a traditionally-produced animation. Plus – and, yes, I’m a total fan boying now- the creator Masamune Shirow, was also experimenting with the computer and programs like Photoshop and a few 3D programs on the side, and slowly trying to build upon his existing drawing style by integrating it with the computer. SO freaking INSPIRATIONAL!!!! As for the plot, the character developments, the suspense, and the imaginative depth of it, you can definitely tell Shirow was a huge fan of Science Fiction and the realms of the Political. I would have loved to have Shirow team up with Tom Clancy!!!!!!

CS: When you’re doing a piece for a film like this are you trying to fit as much iconography and imagery as possible or is it more important to find one image that represents the story at large?

Arocena: Before being invited to collaborate with the Lionsgate Marketing/Creative team, I had quite a series of Ghost in the Shell tribute illustrations out there, which made it a bit difficult to conjure up a new visual take on this story. But I was happy that the team was also open for me to explore and offer up a unique way to tell a bit more about the Major’s story by making the packaging be an extension of that. I wanted to give something really cool to this anniversary Steelbook, so I pitched that we give the slip cover some functionality and create a semi-transparent depiction of the Major with the hyper-colored cityscape behind her and have part of the actual cybernetic depiction of her on the steel case beneath it, peek through. Making the combination of slip cover plus Steelbook be a literal representation of Ghost in the Shell.

CS: How long did it take you to make your piece from conception to completion?

Arocena: I remember getting the request from Lionsgate, immediately read the brief, had a quick phone call with the team, and then, two days later, I submitted a PDF presentation consisting of over four colored vector sketches. I hardly ever do pencils. Having been a Creative Director in the “Advertising World” in my past life, I understand how precious a project timeline can be. So I try to take advantage of it and give the client first round sketches that are digital and in color so that we don’t spend a week or two on just analyzing Black and White pencil sketches. From that initial group submitted, the cover was already in there and was at probably a 75% done composition. What took a bit of time was developing how the additional protective slip cover illustration would best function and open the visual narrative for the anniversary.

CS: Were there any licensing requirements/restrictions that you had to overcome in order to get your design approved?

Arocena: Well the obvious… I couldn’t show the Major in her “bath day suit” like the evolution sequence from the movie. HAHAHA!

CS: Does the fact that the movie is a cartoon give you an edge in that you’re translating something that’s already illustrative, as opposed to a live-action movie?

Arocena: Not really. Although, I think the big challenge for me was to be very cognizant and reverent of the history and admiration Ghost in the Shell has throughout the world. Also, making sure that through the collaboration we would create a token that would resonate with fans and collectors, resulting in being part of the property’s history.

CS: Is there a dream movie or property that you have yet to do art for?

Arocena: Oh Hellzzzzzz Yeah!!! I mean, yes, I totally still have a few “dream movie projects” and I hope I might be lucky enough to one day create and make them a reality for movie aficionados and collectors. But for right now, I can’t think of a better way to kick off my first collaboration with Lionsgate than with the 25th Anniversary Ghost in the Shell Steelbook! Totally a Bucket List moment for me!!

CS: Looking at your process videos is amazing. There are so many complex moving parts to it. Is vector art easier or more difficult than traditional illustration for you?

Arocena: Let’s put it like this… Adobe Illustrator, ever since 1997, has challenged me, pushing my creative voice where very few have wanted to play. When they all went Photoshop, I took my knocks and bruises creating commercial branded logos while pursuing my creativity with Adobe Illustrator. It definitely is not as forgivable as photoshop, but it is just another tool within my creative arsenal of tools. In short, Adobe Illustrator is my favorite video game, where the Big Boss to beat will always be me.

Queenpins: STXfilms Acquires Worldwide Rights to Kristen Bell Comedy

STXfilms has secured worldwide rights to Queenpins, a female-driven comedy that will reunite the studio with Bad Moms star Kristen Bell for a film inspired by the true story of the largest coupon counterfeit scam in US history.

RELATED: Five Eyes: Jason Statham & Guy Ritchie Reunite for International Spy Action Thriller

Queenpins will center on the story of a suburban housewife, fed up with being dismissed and overlooked by her husband and society, who decides to take back control of her life by starting an illegal coupon club. Her creation ends up scamming millions of dollars from big food companies while delivering deals to millions of fellow coupon clippers.

Bell will re-team with her The Good Place and Veronica Mars co-star Kirby Howell-Baptiste, as well as Vince Vaughn and Paul Walter Hauser.

“We love everything about this comedy, especially reuniting with our friend Kristen Bell, who is paired perfectly with Kirby Howell-Baptiste – we know they’ve got great chemistry, and Kirby has shown she is a master of this kind of comedy in ‘Why Women Kill,’” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of the STXfilms Motion Picture Group. “Audiences love this kind of entertainment – it’s a subversive suburban comedy for moms that dads will enjoy too. We’re thrilled to be working with Aron and Gita as we tell this fun story.”

The film is written and will be directed by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly and produced by AGC Studios, Marquee Entertainment, and Red Hour Films. AGC’s Linda McDonough will produce alongside Red Hour’s Nicky Weinstock. AGC Studios Chairman Stuart Ford and Miguel A. Palos, Jr. will executive produce alongside Ben Stiller and Breean Solberg of Red Hour. The project was developed by McDonough under her Marquee Entertainment banner prior to joining AGC earlier this year.

“Aron and Gita have pulled together a phenomenal cast and Queenpins is shaping up to be exactly the kind of broad multi-generational, multi-cultural comedy caper that STX have enjoyed great success with in the past. Adam and his team are a perfect home for the film and we’re excited to get going with them,” said Ford.

Villeneuve is best known for directing Blade Runner 2049 as well as Sicario. Though Dune will likely resemble the former film more than the latter, both display the sort of experience directing arid, desolate locales that a fan would want in their Dune director, considering a sizable chunk of the story takes place on a desert planet.

Netflix has released the first images for director David Fincher’s Herman Mankiewicz biopic film Mank, providing us with our first look at the film’s ensemble cast led by Oscar-winner Gary Oldman. The film will be set in 1930s Hollywood as newspaper reporter turned screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz races to finish his Citizen Kane script for Orson Welles. Mank will be led by Oscar-winner Gary Oldman as Herman Mankiewicz. He will be joined by Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Charles Dance, Tuppence Middleton, Arliss Howard, Ferdinand Kingsley, Jamie McShane, Joseph Cross, Sam Troughton, Toby Leonard Moore, Tom Burke, and Tom Pelphrey.

Mankiewicz is most famous for co-writing Citizen Kane alongside director Orson Welles. Widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, it gave Mankiewicz quite the influence in the golden age of Hollywood. In keeping with the vibe, Mank will be filmed entirely in black and white and will start shooting in November.

Having written or co-written nearly 100 other films, including classics like The Pride of the YankeesGentlemen Prefer Blondes, and The Wizard of Oz, he remains best-known for Citizen Kane. Although the film caused a rift between him and Welles, as Mankiewicz accused the director of pushing him out of the limelight, even offering to pay him off so Welles could get the sole writing credit on the film.

Fincher spent more than 20 years trying to bring Mankiewicz’s story to the big screen. Now, with a script written by his father, for newspaper writer Jack Fincher, the project has found a home on Netflix. It marks his first time in the director’s chair since 2014’s Gone Girl. He was set to helm the World War Z sequel, but the project was shelved back in February. Fincher will produce alongside Cean Chaffin and Douglas Urbanski.

Zachary Levi says Shazam 2 might begin filming in Early 2021

Following the official announcement of the Shazam sequel’s official title during the DC FanDome, titular star Zachary Levi has now confirmed the potential production starting date for the highly-anticipated DC film. In a recent interview with Dan Fogler’s 4D Xperience, the 39-year-old actor revealed that the studio is planning to begin filming for Shazam! Fury of the Gods by the first quarter of next year.

“They announced that we were gonna do a sequel pretty much right after we premiered. They knew we were tracking well enough, they were happy enough with the numbers,” Levi said. “So they have been steadily and earnestly working on the script for the sequel and I think Q1 of next year is the idea.”

He also addressed the sequel’s need to avoid any major production delays in the future due to the kid actors’ inevitable growth spurts. “COVID has kind of made everything a little bit up in the air, but very much the intent is to make another one. We gotta get to it fast, the kids are growing fast.”

Levi also commented on the film’s new November 2022 release by admitting that the decision was a good thing for the sequel’s box office performance. “It was gonna be April 2022 and then they pushed [the date], partly because of COVID, I think. I’m actually quite grateful — I think a November release is a better calendar [spot]. Hopefully, we can kind of float and keep it going into the holidays. Aquaman had that right-before-Christmas release and [grossed] a billion-plus dollars.”

It was previously reported that screenwriter Henry Gayden had signed on to return to craft a sequel for the comedic superhero effort with director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) returning alongside producer Peter Safran and cast members Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Marta Milans, Asher Angel, Meagan Good, Faithe Herman, and Adam Brody.

In the first film, we all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

The Shazam! cast includes Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson, Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy) as The Wizard, and Mark Strong (Kingsman) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. The film also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (IT) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (This is Us); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (Fresh Off the Boat); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (Hawaii Five-0). Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) and Marta Milans (Killer Women) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez.

The Northman: Bill Skarsgård exits Robert Eggers’ viking film

In a recent interview with Collider, IT star Bill Skarsgård has revealed that he is no longer a part of the ensemble cast for Robert Eggers’ forthcoming Viking revenge film The Northman. The Swedish actor admitted that it wasn’t an easy decision but due to scheduling conflicts caused by the pandemic, he had no choice but to exit the film. This project would have been Bill Skarsgård’s reunion project with his brother Alexander Skarsgård after 20 years since starring in the 2000 Swedish film White Water Fury.

“No, unfortunately. It’s been a scheduling nightmare during COVID. It is what it is. It’s a big shame. Eggers is one of the great filmmakers out there and working with my brother…I don’t want to talk about it, it’s going to make me burst into tears,” Skarsgård said.

RELATED: Robert Eggers’ Viking Film The Northman Begins Production in Ireland

The Northman is described as a Viking revenge film that will be set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th Century.

Eggers has put together an all-star ensemble for the film including Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Claes Bang, Kate Dickie, and Grammy-nominated Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk plus previous collaborators Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch). Eggers will direct from a script he co-wrote with Icelandic novelist Sjón.

Eggers first gained recognition through his 2015 feature directorial debut The Witch which is a horror period film that immediately received critical and commercial success. This was then followed by 2019’s psychological thriller The Lighthouse which was shot on 35mm black-and-white stock using equipment from the 1920s and ’40s. Starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, the film opened in theaters on October 18 to rave reviews from critics and was a modest commercial success, grossing over $18 million on a $4 million budget, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Tenet Reverses the Box Office, Snags $20 Million Labor Day Weekend

Tenet Reverses the Box Office, snags $20 million Labor Day weekend

At long last, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet — a film many dubbed the box office savior — has made its way to some 2,810 U.S. theaters where it collected a not-too-shabby $20 million over the course of the Labor Day weekend, including $2.82 million from Imax locations. The film also pulled in $126 million overseas, bringing its worldwide come to $146 million. Obviously, one must keep in mind that some of the bigger filmgoing markets, i.e. Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, have yet to open. While that number might seem far too low for a blockbuster film directed by a man whose films have collectively totaled $4.8 billion around the world, bear in mind that Nolan’s time-travel action extravaganza was always going to be a bit bumpy as it charts the course for other future blockbusters to follow.

RELATED: CS Score Reviews Ludwig Göransson’s Tenet and Elmer Bernstein’s Wild Wild West

Also, keep in mind that Nolan’s films typically bring in around $50 million or more domestically on their opening weekends and leg it out to around $200 million in the U.S. and $500 million+ worldwide. That was the case with his last three films not featuring Batman — Dunkirk (2017), Interstellar (2014) and Inception (2010). It’s hard to imagine Tenet surpassing Inception‘s $869 million worldwide total considering the circumstance, and also considering some of the negative reaction in regards to the film’s sound design, but something closer to Dunkirk’s $526 million is not out of the realm of possibility and must be seen as something of a victory for Nolan and Co.

That said, the numbers, according to Deadline, are actually quite solid and significantly better than the $7 million haul of The New Mutants last week; and the best box office showing of any wide release since mid-March. Considering the lack of competition in theaters until September 25 when both Wonder Woman 1984 and Greenland open, Nolan’s film seems poised to dominate multiplexes for quite some time.

The New Mutants came in at No. 2 with $2.9 million, down almost 60% from last week’s dismal opening. Clearly, the X-Men franchise ran out of steam a while ago and Josh Boone’s film is essentially another nail in a coffin already littered with nails.

Russell Crowe’s Unhinged dropped 36% for a $1.7 million haul and an $11 million total at No. 3. The Personal History of David Copperfield ($361,000), The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run ($345,000), Words on Bathroom Walls ($282,370) and My Brothers’ Crossing ($12,941) rounded out the Top 7.
