47 Ronin sequel greenlit with Ron Yuan set to direct

Just before Keanu Reeves returned to the spotlight with the John Wick franchise, he led the critical and financially disastrous 47 Ronin for Universal Pictures but despite the film’s failure, the studio has greenlit a sequel with Mulan star Ron Yuan set to direct, according to Deadline.

The new film will be set 300 years in the future in an exotic cyberpunk world and will offer a re-imagining on both the original 2013 film and its loose source material Chūshingura, with sources reporting the film will incorporate horror elements alongside its modern samurai and ninja elements.

I’m incredibly excited to be working with Universal and the producing team on this genre-blending, martial arts, action, horror and cyber-punk film,” said Yuan. “This will be a fun, intense, supercharged thrill ride for viewers globally.

The sequel is set to be produced by John Orlando, Share Stallings and Tim Kwowk, with Universal 1440 Entertainment also attached to produce for the original studio and Netflix set to distribute the film. The filmmakers are currently eying an early 2021 production start date for the project.

47 Ronin was written by Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious franchise) and Hossein Amini (The Snowman) on a story from Morgan and Walter Hamada (The Batman) and directed by Carl Rinsch in his debut and featured a cast including Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada (Mortal Kombat), Tadanobu Asano (Mortal Kombat), Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim) and Ko Shibasaki (One Missed Call). Loosely based on the fictionalized accounts of the titular group, the story centered on the 47 rōnin in 18th century Japan as they set out to avenge the death of their master.

The film was a notorious flop for Universal Studios, being panned by critics and audiences alike and only grossing $151 million at the global box office on its $175 million budget, being considered one of the biggest box office flops in history and leaving the studio in the red for 2013.

CS Collectibles: DC Direct, Plus Batman Animated & More!

We start this week’s column with some very sad news. It has been announced that the recent AT&T/Warner Media reshuffle has left several casualties in its wake, namely massive layoffs at DC Universe, DC Comics and, worst of all, the complete shuttering of collectibles division DC Direct. Begun as DC Direct in 1998, then rebranded to DC Collectibles before briefly returning to the DC Direct moniker this year, the company put out so many amazing products over the years. There was always an emphasis on fidelity to the whatever artists/eras of the comics the statues or figures were trying to emulate. A lot of craft went into each item, and prices were always reasonable. Over the years ComingSoon.net had a wonderful time working with the fine folks at DC Direct, including Executive Director Jim Fletcher, Marketing Associate Amanda Levine and Lindsay Kiesel & Sara Ruiz Hannah of Publicity & Communications. While it is unknown to us at this time what will happen to their forthcoming lines, let’s look back at some of our favorite DC Collectibles/DC Direct unboxing vids from over the years…

The success of Halloween was thanks in large part to Michael Myers, the silent stalking figure, clad in faded coveralls and a haunting white mask who prowled the streets of a small town in Illinois. This archetype resonated so well with audiences that filmmakers have been going back to it for decades. Not only has the Halloween franchise seen numerous successful sequels and remakes, films like Friday the 13th, The Prowler and more recently the Scream franchise all pay homage to John Carpenter’s classic.

Lerman & Butterfield to Lead James Schamus’ College Republicans

Lerman & Butterfield to lead James Schamus’ College Republicans

James Schamus has begun building his cast for the fact-inspired coming-of-age story College Republicans, reuniting with Indignation star Logan Lerman and signing Asa Butterfield (Sex Education) to portray young versions of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove, according to Deadline.

RELATED: Percy Jackson: Logan Lerman Open to Return as a New Character in the Disney+ Series

Penned by Wes Jones (Billions), the film is set in the summer of 1973 and sees Rove partner with his not-to-be-trusted campaign manager Atwater on a road trip through the South in an effort to earn and steal the votes needed to become chairman of the national College Republicans club. The duo will form uneasy alliances with future Republican icons including Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Jeff Sessions, but will meet their match in a beautiful young Republican operative who may bring their journey to a career-ending halt.

Inspired by the real people and political organization at the center of the story, Jones crafted the film on lots of meticulous research to properly tell the darkly comedic origin story of the modern GOP and the minds who would one day reshape the American political landscape.

In addition to Lerman’s Atwater and Butterfield’s Rove, the film is set to feature Kristine Froseth (Looking for Alaska) as Kate King, the young Republican operative threatening their dreams who is a composite character of real people in the two’s past.

The film is set to be produced by Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron, The Black List’s Franklin Leonard and Symbolic Exchange’s Schamus, while Jones and Ken Friemann are attached as executive producers on the project. The crew is eying a production start date in spring or summer of 2021 while financing and distribution deals are developed in the meantime.

After breaking out with the Golden Globe-nominated dramedy The Farewell, writer/director Lulu Wang has found her next feature project in the form of an English-language adaptation of the 2013 Cannes hit Like Father, Like Son, according to Variety.

RELATED: The Expatriates: Lulu Wang Sets Nicole Kidman Drama for Amazon

Written, directed and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters), the Japanese drama centered on Ryota, a successful workaholic businessman who learns that his biological son was switched with another boy after birth and must decide whether to choose his true son or the boy he and his wife have raised as their own for six years.

The new film will be penned by playwright Sarah Ruhl (The Glorias), with Wang attached to direct for Focus Features and produce alongside Josh McLaughlin of Wink Productions. Wang took to Twitter to confirm that the film will not be a remake of the Cannes Jury Prize winner and Palme d’Or nominee, but rather a reimagining of the drama.

RELATED: Lulu Wang to Direct Film Adaptation of Children of the New World

Wang’s The Farewell, loosely based on her own personal family experience, was one of the most celebrated films of 2019, currently maintaining a 98 percent approval rating from critics on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes and earning the Best Feature award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and two Golden Globe nominations, with star Awkwafina taking home the statue for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. The 37-year-old filmmaker is currently developing the drama series The Expatriates at Amazon with Nicole Kidman executive producing and Wang writing and directing multiple episodes.

A remake was previously in the works at DreamWorks Pictures with Chris and Paul Weitz (About a Boy) attached to direct and Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies) producing, but after years of development hell it appears that project was quietly cancelled.
