Joining Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell are returning Mission: Impossible alums Rebecca Ferguson (Doctor Sleep), Simon Pegg (Ready Player One), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Vanessa Kirby (Hobbs & Shaw) and Henry Czerny (Ready or Not) along with newcomers Shea Whigham (Joker), Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Avengers: Infinity War) and Esai Morales (La Bamba, Titans) who will replace Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) for the villain role.
Following the large critical and commercial success of the past two installments, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie signed a new deal with Paramount to return to write and direct the next two installments, turning down other studio offers to continue his long-running partnership with franchise star Tom Cruise. Skydance Media, who joined the franchise with the fourth installment, Ghost Protocol, will be returning to produce the next two entries.
The Mission: Impossible franchise spans almost 25 years and six films, starting off with modest critical and major box office success in the first two films before launching its lead protagonist into grittier and more explosive stories, each film getting progressively better reviews than its predecessor, with the most recent installment, Fallout, earning the highest reviews for both the franchise and the action genre, currently maintaining a 97% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes while also acquiring the highest box office gross of the franchise at over $790 million worldwide.

According to Deadline, IFC Films has officially acquired the North American theatrical distribution rights to director Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ long-delayed romantic drama Monday which is being led by MCU star Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough. Originally scheduled to debut at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, the film will now arrive in theaters and on VOD on April 16, 2021.

“In many ways, the film has become even more relevant in this current environment, as all relationships got challenged during the lock down and Chloe’s and Mickey’s story is a very realistic take on relationships,” Papadimitropoulos said. “At a time when things have started getting more optimistic in the world and a summer trip to Greece, crowded parties, people kissing and having fun is something we are all longing for – I believe the timing is perfect to release the film and the fact that it found a home at IFC Films, makes my smile a little bigger.”
Monday is described as a classy-looking film that will focus on Chloe and Mickey, two self-destructive Americans, living across Athens and the Greek islands who will be involved in an intense romance. When Chloe’s time in Greece is drawing to a close, she decides to give up her high-flying job back home and explore whether one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable Monday.
The film will be directed by Greek director Argyris Papadimitropoulos (Suntan). The script is co-written by screenwriter-playwright Rob Hayes (This Will End Badly) and Papadimitropoulos.

Monday is produced by Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (Before Midnight), Damian Jones (Iron Lady), and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Loving). La La Land‘s producer Fred Berger will be the film’s executive producer. Protagonist Pictures will handle the film’s international sales while Faliro House and its partners will be the ones financing the feature.
Sebastian Stan is best known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. He was recently seen in Karyn Kusama‘s Destroyer starring alongside Nicole Kidman and Tatiana Maslany. Denise Gough (Colette) is an award-winning stage actress known for her roles in stage plays like People Places And Things and Angel In America.

Deon Taylor (Fatale) will direct a new biopic, Freedom Ride, about the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis and his leadership of the 1961 Freedom Riders, according to TheWrap.
RELATED: CS Video: Fatale Interviews With Stars Swank & Ealy & Director Taylor
The Freedom Riders were a group of protesters who challenged the non-enforcement of Supreme Court rulings that found segregated public buses to be unconstitutional. The Riders risked their lives by traveling throughout the Deep South in desegregated buses, and were regularly attacked by white mobs led by the Ku Klux Klan. Their efforts drew nationwide attention to the Civil Rights Movement and paved the way for other famous protests, including Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington.
Taylor said in a statement: “John Lewis once said, ‘You are a light. You are the light! Never let anyone — any person or any force — dampen, dim or diminish your light… Release the need to hate, to harbor division and the enticement of revenge. Release all bitterness. Hold only love, only peace in your heart, knowing that the battle of good to overcome evil is already won.’ His words not only resonate with me as human, but inspire me to tell his amazing story. Working with our great partners at The Hideaway Entertainment, INDE Companies and the legendary Benjamin Crump is such a blessing. We are going to create an amazing film and really do John Lewis proud, I promise you!”
Documentarian Steven Vosburgh will reportedly write the script based on his interviews with Lewis and other Freedom Riders.

Taylor will executive produce via his Hidden Empire Film Group along with his partner Robert F. Smith, civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, and Vosburgh. INDE Companies’ Kim Leadford and Mark R. Harris, The Hideaway Entertainment’s Matthew Rhodes, and Hidden Empire Film Group’s Roxanne Avent Taylor will produce. Production on the biopic is scheduled to begin this summer in Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama.

The long-gestating biopic of beloved jazz singer Peggy Lee is finally gaining some ground as Golden Globe winner Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon) has signed on to star in the central role and reunite with director Todd Haynes (Dark Waters), according to Deadline.
RELATED: Michelle Williams Confirms Return for Venom Sequel
The film first began development at 20th Century Fox over a decade ago, with three-time Oscar nominee Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) penning a draft before her passing in 2012 and Reese Witherspoon (Little Fires Everywhere) set to star, though following Ephron’s death the studio put the film on hold. Witherspoon would later exit the project and with the Disney-Fox merger resulting in the latter studio’s 20th Century banner shuttering, the project was shelved, though sources report that MGM is currently in talks to acquire the film. It’s currently unclear if Ephron’s original script will still be used or if a new writer will be brought in to touch up the script or start all over.
Fever is set to be produced by Marc Platt, Witherspoon and Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon through their Killer Films banner while five-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish is currently in negotiations to join as executive producer alongside her mother Maggie Baird and record label partner Justin Lubliner. Eilish recently took part in a celebration of Lee’s life and career in May 2020 and has frequently cited the late singer as one of the key inspirations for her music.

“I’m so excited to be part of this film with Mattel,” Yachty said in a statement. “I played UNO as a kid and still do today, so to spin that into a movie based on the Atlanta hip hop scene I came out of is really special. It hits close to home for me.”
While exact plot details are currently being kept under wraps, the film is said to be set in the underground hip hop world of Atlanta and is being described as a heist comedy with Marcy Kelly penning the script in her feature debut.
“At Mattel Films, we are looking to explore stories that bring our brands to life in unexpected ways,” Robbie Brenner, executive producer and Head of Mattel Films, said in a statement. “UNO is a game that transcends generations and cultures and we look forwards to partnering with Lil Yachty, as well as with Coach K and Brian Sher, to transform the classic UNO game into a comedic action adventure.”
Should their deal go through, Yachty will produce the film alongside Mattel and Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Pierre “P” Thomas and Brian Sher for Quality Films, while Brenner will executive produce and Kevin McKeon will act as supervising producer and lead on the Mattel Films project.
