Jai Courtney Explains the ‘Different Flavor’ of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

Last year, Jai Courtney became the first Suicide Squad cast member to join James Gunn’s upcoming film, proving that it wasn’t going to be a hard reboot of the franchise. Although the new movie retains some connectivity to David Ayer’s original film, it goes without saying that Ayer and Gunn have different directing styles. While speaking with Variety, Courtney discussed how he adjusted to James Gunn’s approach to The Suicide Squad.

“I think it’s kind of got a different flavor,” said Courtney. “There’s a whole bunch of new characters. James Gunn has an approach to things that is uniquely his; he pulls a lot of that into the Suicide Squad world. And I think that it fits really well, and audiences are going to have a lot of fun with it.”

Much of Gunn’s film is still shrouded in secrecy. The Suicide Squad boasts a plethora of new characters making their DC movie debut. But save for a few exceptions, there’s still some mystery about who the new cast members will portray. Since the sequel’s release is still over a year away, Courtney couldn’t divulge any story details. However, he did share an interesting anecdote about filming a scene that involved the use of a water tank.

“I won’t to say too much, but there’s a particular sequence when I get very wet,” related Courtney. “And a few other people do, and hilarity ensued when it came to that. When you’re spending hours upon hours in a water tank with a bunch of people treading water, and you’ve got Styrofoam stuffed into every crevice of your costume to try and take the load off and because it’s 4am, it gets quite ridiculous.”

“I am lucky that sometimes I’m making these small-budget gritty dramas like Stateless,” continued Courtney. “And sometimes I’m out shooting big ridiculous action comedies like Suicide Squad. To have feet on both of those trains is a lot of fun — and it also means that I never get tired of it.”

The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
