Cherry: Apple Acquires Russo Brothers’ Tom Holland-Led Drama

Deadline is reporting that Apple Original Films has acquired the worldwide rights to Anthony and Joe Russo’s Tom Holland-led drama Cherry. The outlet notes the deal landed in the high $40 millions and also gives Apple an awards season contender with plans to premiere the film in early 2021 on Apple TV+.

RELATED: Cherry: Joe Russo Says Tom Holland-Led Film is Almost Done With Post-Production

Cherry tells the true-life story of author Nico Walker (played by Holland in the movie), a former Army medic who returned from Iraq with extreme un-diagnosed PTSD and fell into opioid addiction and began robbing banks. Walker was caught in 2011 and is scheduled to be released in 2020. The novel has been branded as a sort of hybrid of Jesus’ Son and Reservoir Dogs; a story about love, war, bank robberies, and heroin. You can get your own copy of the book by clicking here! Walker previously handled the bidding war for his book while serving time in prison, which complicated matters since he was only allotted a specific amount of minutes per phone call.

Additional cast includes Ciara Bravo (Wayne) as Walker’s wife, Kelli Burglund (Now Apocalypse), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Jeff Wahlberg (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce), Kyle Harvey (The After Party), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!).

Cherry was adapted by Jessica Goldberg (The Path) and co-written by Angela Otstot (The Shield). The movie is produced by the Russo Brothers, Chris Castaldi, and studio president Mike Larocca under their AGBO Films banner, alongside CEO Jonathan Grey and President Matthew Rhodes under their The Hideaway Entertainment banner. The movie is executive produced by Todd Makurath and Jake Aust from AGBO and The Hideaway Entertainment’s Kristy Maurer Grisham and Judd Payne.

The Call Trailer: The Trap is Set, The Game is Revenge in Horror-Thriller

The Call Trailer: The Trap is Set, The Game is Revenge in Horror-Thriller

The Call Trailer: The trap is set, the game is revenge in horror-thriller

Cinedigm and Voltage Pictures have debuted the first trailer for the forthcoming horror-thriller The Call starring horror icons Lin Shaye (Insidious franchise, The Grudge) and Tobin Bell (Saw franchise, Belzebuth), which is set to hit select theaters and drive-ins next month! The trailer can be viewed in the player below!

Four Friends. One Phone Call. 60 Seconds to Stay Alive. In the fall of 1987, a group of small-town friends must survive the night in the home of a sinister couple after a tragic accident occurs in The Call. Needing only to make a single phone call, the request seems horribly ordinary until they realize that this call could change their life…or end it. This simple task quickly spirals into terror as their worst nightmares become reality as they enter the realm of The Call.

This spine-tingling tale stars horror icons Shaye and Bell alongside Chester Rushing (Stranger Things), Erin Sanders (Big Time Rush) and Judd Lormand (SEAL Team).

“Pairing Tobin and Lin, or Saw’s Jigsaw and Insidious’ Elise Rainier as they’re known to horror fans around the world, brings so much terror to the screen,” Emmy-nominated director Timothy Woodward Jr, said in a statement. “Their chemistry is undeniable, and the power of their scenes splinters off, creating this dark, macabre world these characters are forced to survive in.”

Directed by Woodward Jr., The Call was written by Patrick Stibbs and produced by Final Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick, Stibbs, Zebulun Huling, Gina Rugolo and Randy J. Goodwin. Executive Producers include Nicolas Chartier, Jonathan Deckter, Matthew Helderman, Joe Listhaus, Drew Ryce, James Shavick, Kirk Shaw and Luke Taylor. Co Producers include James Cullen Bressack and Chaysen Beacham.

The film is set to open exclusively in theaters and drive-ins nationwide October 2 from Cinedigm.

Kajillionaire Review: A Wholly Original Work of Dramedic Art

Rating:

9.5/10

Cast:

Evan Rachel Wood as Old Dolio Dyne

Richard Jenkins as Robert Dyne

Debra Winger as Theresa Dyne

Gina Rodriguez as Melanie Whitacre

Mark Ivanir as Stovik Mann

Rachel Redleaf as Kelli Medford

Written & Directed by Miranda July

Kajillionaire Review:

These days it feels rare for a truly original film to come along that also proves to be a real brilliant work, with most either borrowing from previous works, adapting or remaking stories or leaning into the best areas of their genres to create an entertaining affair, and yet when a film as incredible, intelligent and powerful as Miranda July’s Kajillionaire arrives it truly instills in me a renewed sense of awe and wonder in the magic of even the smallest corners of the filmmaking world.

Con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their family, only to have their entire world turned upside down.

From the opening moments of the film to its closing credits, the film takes every perceived moment of predictability and consistently subverts expectations for its tricky balance of somewhat coming-of-age comedy, heist thrills and modern feminist drama. In the best way imaginable, it was hard to ever be able to see what was coming next for its quiet and awkward central character, with every step forward feeling like it was setting up five steps back and never allowing audiences determine which until it was already happening.

Much of this brilliance and uniqueness comes to life thanks to the profound, moving and outrageous script written by July that has set quite a high bar for her next project while also establishing that she is no longer a talent to ignore behind the camera. The film’s deft exploration of everything from the Me Too movement to the tragic results of damaged parenting to existentialism and bizarre corners of its Southern California setting, it’s a film that frequently bounced back and forth between causing me to burst out into hysterical laughter and bringing me to tears at its breathtaking character development and offbeat plot points.

Along with her incredible writing, July’s directorial eye is a truly beautiful sight to behold, simultaneously giving the film a drained look of color as Old Dolio is practically under her parents’ captivity while also highlighting the film in a beautiful color palette that makes every frame truly mesmerizing. With her background as a live performance artist as well as an actor and director, the 46-year-old filmmaker has clearly transferred her assortment of talents to the director’s chair and brought an incredible energy to the film that keeps viewers hooked.

The material is further elevated thanks to the transcendent lead performance Evan Rachel Wood, arguably the best of her career thus far, as well as fantastic performances from Rodriguez, Jenkins and Winger. The Westworld star truly taps into the raw vulnerability and heartbreaking aspects of Old Dolio that makes it all the easier for audiences to connect and empathize with her situation and root for every step forward to maintain, while the Carmen Sandiego lead proves to be a magnificent foil for Wood’s protagonist, someone with a true appreciation for life and simultaneous grip on her identity while looking for her sense of purpose. The bond that blooms between the two as Melanie opens Old Dolio’s eyes to the wonders of the world apart from her overbearing and problematic parents is such a compelling thing to watch and the performances from the two only further cements its organic and believable sensibilities.

Kajillionaire has come along at just the right moment, infusing the modern cinema world with a moving, hilarious and truly original work of art that is bolstered by the outstanding work both in front of and behind the camera and has established itself as one of the best films of the year.

Henry Cavill Not Participating in Zack Snyder’s Justice League Reshoots

Henry Cavill Not Participating in Zack Snyder's Justice League Reshoots

Henry Cavill not participating in Zack Snyder’s Justice League reshoots

After yesterday brought the surprising word that Zack Snyder would be shooting additional footage for his cut of Justice League with five of its central stars returning, Collider has revealed that contrary to the report, Superman’s Henry Cavill is not set to partake in the reshoots for the infamous cut.

RELATED: CS Video: Release the Snyder Cut Author Sean O’Connell

Not shooting anything additional. No,” Cavill said. “It’s all stuff that has been already done. Obviously I don’t know how things are going to evolve and change and adapt depending on now a different length of movie and whatever may happen in post-production. Whatever lessons may be learned from what is it four years since Justice League came out? Four years’ worth of fan reaction. For me…I’m now just watching the party.

Our recent chat with Release the Snyder Cut author Sean O’Connell revealed that the original decision not to shoot new footage may have simply been COVID-related, so it’s possible appropriate safety steps were ironed out. While things could change and see Cavill actually partake in the additional photography, with his schedule currently filled shooting the second season of The Witcher in the UK and pandemic protocols making traveling between the two productions near-impossible, chances are Snyder will indeed have to work with whatever footage he has for the character.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $70 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision, as well as the additional photography. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. It is expected to debut sometime in 2021.

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

RELATED: DC FanDome: Watch the New Trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League!

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

Archenemy: RLJE Films Acquires Action-Adventure Starring Joe Manganiello

RLJE Films has acquired the North American rights to the action/thriller Archenemy ahead of its world premiere at this year’s Beyond Fest. The film marks the third collaboration between RLJE Films and SpectreVision, after Mandy and Color Out of Space.

RELATED: Joe Keery is a Madman in Spree Red-Band Trailer

Written and directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer (Daniel Isn’t Real) from a story by Mortimer and Lucas Passmore (No Good Heroes), the film stars Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Skylan Brooks (Empire), Zolee Griggs (W-Tang: An American Saga), Paul Scheer (Black Monday), Amy Seimetz (Pet Semetary) and Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

“We’re excited to be back in business with SpectreVision after the incredibly successful releases of Mandy and Color Out of Space,” said RLJE Films Chief Acquisitions Officer Mark Ward. “With Joe Manganiello’s strong performance and Adam Egypt Mortimer’s innovative direction, we couldn’t have asked for a better dream team to showcase Archenemy at Beyond Fest and in theaters and various platforms in December.”

In Archenemy, Max Fist (Manganiello) claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to Earth, where he has no powers. No one believes his stories except for a local teen named Hamster. Together, they take to the streets to wipe out the local drug syndicate and its vicious crime boss known as The Manager.

The first Yakuza game follows the story of Kazuma Kiryu being released from a 10-year prison sentence after taking the fall for the murder of his family’s patriarch. After the entire Japanese underworld is pulled into the search for $100 million stolen from the vault of his former clan, Kiryu is forced back into the lawless world of the yakuza.

“Yakuza offers us a new playground in which to set compelling stories with complex characters in a unique environment that audiences have rarely seen before,” 1212 said. “The saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines, and a gripping journey towards redemption.”

The game has been widely praised for its story and character-driven plot in the unique setting of the streets of Japan’s most notorious urban nightlife districts and its portrayal of the real-life yakuza, its history, code of ethics, criminal enterprises, and unique characteristics.

Yakuza is Sega’s bestselling video game franchise following Sonic The Hedgehog, with the first installment released on PlayStation 2 in 2005. The franchise grew with an additional seven main title sequels as well as eight spinoff titles on all major gaming platforms.
