Universal Pictures Developing Film Based on Madonna Written & Directed By the Artist Herself

Universal Pictures is developing an all-new untitled project based on one of the world’s most influential icons, Madonna. Madonna will direct the project and is co-writing the script with Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (Juno, Tully).

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” said Madonna. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

“Madonna is the ultimate icon, humanitarian, artist, and rebel. With her singular gift of creating art that is as accessible as it is boundary-pushing, she has shaped our culture in a way very few others have,” said Donna Langley, Chairman, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. “It’s an incredible honor for everyone at Universal to work alongside her, Diablo, and Amy to bring audiences and dedicated fans around the world her unvarnished story for the first time.”

Three-time Oscar nominee Amy Pascal (Little Women, The Post, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), will produce for her Universal-based Pascal Pictures alongside Madonna. Sara Zambreno and Guy Oseary will executive produce.

“This movie is an absolute labor of love for me,” said Pascal. “I have known Madonna since we made A League of Their Own together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”

Madonna is a multi-award-winning artist, activist, and humanitarian. Certified the best-selling female music artist in history, she has sold 335 million records worldwide and remains the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, Madonna remains one of the most awarded and critically acclaimed artists in history, with 658 prominent global award nominations and 225 wins. She has graced more than 4,700 coveted magazine covers worldwide. Generations of world-class artists celebrate her influence on their lives, work and personal style.

Equally admired for her activism, Madonna is a freedom fighter and voice for the disenfranchised, fighting for LGBTQ rights, speaking out for gender equality and supporting orphans and vulnerable children through her non-profit organization, Raising Malawi.

Madonna’s success on the big screen includes starring roles in films Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Dick Tracy (1990), A League of Their Own (1992) and Evita (1996), which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Madonna’s 1991 cult-classic Truth or Dare was the No. 1 grossing documentary from 1991 through 2002. In 2011, Madonna made her theatrical directorial debut with the British historical romantic drama film she also co-wrote, W./E. She has also directed short films including Filth & Wisdom, SecretProjectRevolution along with Steven Klein, and created and produced the documentary I Am Because We Are about the children of Malawi.

According to Deadline, Southpaw’s Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) and Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) are reteaming for a new thriller titled The Guilty, with Gyllenhaal set to star and Fuqua directing. The movie is based on the Danish drama Den Skyldige directed by Gustav Moller.

The Guilty takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Bayler (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger — but he soon discovers that nothing is at it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out.

“I couldn’t be more excited to work with Antoine again. Our time together on Southpaw was one of the great artistic experiences of my career, and I cannot wait to be back on set with him again. The Guilty is a special story, and one that we all feel very close to,” said Gyllenhaal.

The screenplay is written by Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective). Gyllenhaal will produce along with his Nine Stories partner Riva Marker as well as Fuqua through his Fuqua Films. Producers also include Scott Greenberg, Michel Litvak, and Gary Michael Walters for Bold Films. Annie Marter, Gustav Moller, and Lina Flint will executive produce.

Exclusive: Amy Seimetz reveals dream Stephen King adaptation

In her 17 years of working, Amy Seimetz has proven to be a formidable force both in front of and behind the camera, including the 2019 adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, and while chatting with the star for the thriller The Secrets We Keep, ComingSoon.net found out her dream project in King’s bibliography!

RELATED: Unearthing the Stephen King References in Pet Sematary

In looking at her recent work as a part of both the Alien franchise and the terrifying world of Stephen King and which great white whale in the horror genre she would love to tackle next, she revealed that rather than another genre pic, there’s a certain King novella she’d love to bring to life on screen.

“It’s not horror, but when we were making Pet Sematary, I was actually talking about how I’d really like to do a new adaptation of Stand By Me with a pre-teen group of girls,” Seimetz revealed.

Purchase the Oscar-nominated first adaptation of King’s novella here!

Chris Messina (Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Seimetz’s co-star in the Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman-starring thriller, expressed excitement at the possibility of seeing The Girlfriend Experience co-creator’s take on the material and even joked about his own involvement in the project.

“If you make the movie, could I play The Body?” Messina half-joked.

“Absolutely you can,” Seimetz laughed. “You can hold the boom mic too!”

King’s 1982 novella centered on a group of pre-teen boys in 1960 Castle Rock, Maine as they venture to the train tracks on the outskirts of the area in the search for the dead body of a local missing boy. It was previously adapted into the 1986 film Stand By Me helmed by Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, Misery) and starred Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho), Corey Feldman (The Goonies) and Jerry O’Connell (Star Trek: Lower Decks) as the main group of boys, as well as Kiefer Sutherland (The Fugitive) as local gang leader John “Ace” Merrill.

It was a strong box office success upon release, grossing over $52 million on its $4 million budget, and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, including King himself, who called it the first successful translation of one of his works to screen, and garnered one Oscar nomination and two Golden Globe nods.

The Secrets We Keep is set to hit select theaters on September 16 and VOD and digital platforms on October 16!

The exquisite Audrey Hepburn lights up the screen in her first starring role opposite the charismatic Gregory Peck in this funny, beautiful, and intoxicating romantic comedy. Ranked as the #4 greatest love story of all time by the American Film Institute, Roman Holiday earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Actress for Hepburn, Best Costume Design for legendary designer Edith Head, and Best Writing for Dalton Trumbo.

Director William Wyler’s 1953 fairy tale was one of Hollywood’s first on-location motion pictures and memorably captures the bustling streets and iconic sites of Rome. Roman Holiday expresses the exhilaration of joyously breaking free as the lead character escapes her royal obligations against the backdrop of post-war Europe embracing long-awaited peace.

Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was blacklisted for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee and his name was not included in the film’s original credits. In 1992 the Board of Governors of the Academy voted to finally credit Trumbo for the “Story Writing” Oscar and his widow received a statuette in 1993. In 2011, the WGA restored Trumbo’s name to the screenwriting credits. This is the first physical home entertainment release to correctly credit Dalton Trumbo with both the screenplay and story by credits both on packaging and the film itself.

The original negative was processed at a local film lab in Rome and was unfortunately badly scratched and damaged. The film had to be pieced back together, but the splices were so weak due to the damage that extensive amounts of tape had to be used to allow the negative to make it through a printing machine. Because of the fragile state of the negative, a Dupe Negative was made and then blown up a few thousandths of an inch to cover all the splice tape that held the original negative together.

In anticipation of this new Blu-ray release, the film was digitally restored using the Dupe Negative and a Fine Grain element to capture the best possible image. Every frame was reviewed, and the film received extensive clean up to remove thousands of scratches, bits of dirt, and other damage. Because audio elements to properly up-mix to 5.1 do not exist, the original mono track was remastered, and minor anomalies were corrected. The result is a film returned to its original vibrancy and beauty that remains true to director William Wyler’s vision.

The limited-edition Paramount Presents Blu-ray Disc is presented in collectible packaging that includes a foldout image of the film’s theatrical re-release poster, and an interior spread with key movie moments. Newly remastered from a 4K film transfer, the Roman Holiday Blu-ray also includes a new Filmmaker Focus with film historian Leonard Maltin, access to a Digital copy of the film, as well as previously released featurettes on Academy Award-winner Audrey Hepburn, Edith Head’s Oscar-winning* costumes, the blacklisting of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and much more.

Bonus Features:
– Filmmaker Focus: Leonard Maltin on Roman Holiday
– Behind the Gates: Costumes
– Rome with a Princess
– Audrey Hepburn: The Paramount Years
– Dalton Trumbo: From A-List to Blacklist
– Paramount in the ’50s: Remembering Audrey
– Theatrical Trailers

In addition to Oh and Yeoh, the cast for the film has also expanded to include Brandon Soo Hoo (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble) and Khen Hua Tan (Magnum P.I.). The film will mark the third collaboration between Yeoh and Golding after the two previously starred together in his breakout hit Crazy Rich Asians and the Paul Feig-helmed rom-com Last Christmas.

Oh, who recently nabbed an Emmy nomination for her performance in the BBC hit drama Killing Eve, has signed on to star as Mistral, a friend of the titular hero who is an exiled dragon living in San Francisco, while Yeoh’s character is being kept under wraps.

Alden Ehrenreich made his debut as Han Solo in the Disney-owned franchise in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, taking over from Harrison Ford in a younger version of the titular character that explored his origins prior to 1977’s Star Wars. The production of the film is one of the most notoriously troubled in Hollywood, with Lucasfilm firing original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller over creative differences and replacing them with Ron Howard, though this would require major reshoots and rewrites that would balloon the production budget to an estimated $300 million.

Upon finally hitting theaters after rushing to make its May 2018 release date, Solo received generally mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, with plenty of praise being aimed at the performances from the cast, namely Ehrenreich and Donald Glover as a younger Lando Calrissian, as well as the visuals and action sequences, with the majority of the criticism being aimed at the story and screenplay. This mixed reception did lead to the film becoming the first box office failure in the four-decade old franchise, grossing a mere $393.2 million worldwide, losing Disney a reported $76.9 million, putting planned sequels in doubt.

RELATED: POLL RESULTS: How Should Solo Return to the Star Wars Universe?

Despite this initial mixed reception, the film has garnered something of a cult following in the years since its release, with the hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen trending on Twitter multiple times and seeing users share their praise for the film and desire to see a continuation of its story, as well as spin-offs centered on Glover’s Lando and Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra.

Joining Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are Academy Award-nominated actor Antonio Banderas (The Mask of ZorroPain and Glory), Grey’s Anatomy actress Sophia Ali and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Tati Gabrielle.
