It is with great sadness that ComingSoon.net brings word (via Deadline) that legendary British actress Dame Diana Rigg has passed away at age 82, reportedly from cancer diagnosed in March. The BAFTA, Emmy and Tony Award-winner was best known for the 60’s spy series The Avengers, her role as a Bond Girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and her recent work as Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones.
“She died peacefully early this morning. She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time,” her agent said.
An alum of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Royal Shakespeare Company, Rigg first gained international fame from 1965 to 1968 as secret agent Emma Peel on Seasons 4 and 5 of the stylish ITV spy series The Avengers opposite Patrick Macnee’s John Steed. Succeeding Julie Stevens and Honor Blackman as Steed’s sidekick, Emma Peel became an instant sex symbol in the 60’s. She followed Blackman into the 007 arena as Tracy, the doomed wife of James Bond, in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) opposite George Lazenby.
After this initial success Rigg had a variety of roles throughout the 70’s, including as a fashion designer in her own American NBC sitcom titled Diana, which lasted one season (1973-1974). She played Portia opposite Charlton Heston in 1970’s Julius Caesar, co-starred with George C. Scott in Arthur Hiller’s satire The Hospital (1971), with Vincent Price in 1973’s horror comedy Theatre of Blood, and sang in the Stephen Sondheim musical adaptation A Little Night Music (1977) with Elizabeth Taylor.
In the 80’s she co-starred with Charles Grodin and Miss Piggy in Jim Henson’s The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and among the ensemble of Peter Ustinov’s Poirot movie Evil Under the Sun (1982). In the 90’s she co-starred with Sean Connery in Bruce Beresford’s A Good Man in Africa (1994), and her role as Mrs. Danvers in ITV’s Rebecca (1997) won her an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie. In 2006 she appeared opposite Edward Norton and Naomi Watts in The Painted Veil, and in Andy Serkis’ 2017 directorial debut Breathe starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy. She also appeared in the 2013 episode of Doctor Who titled “The Crimson Horror”.
In 2013 she took on what might be her most popular role as the feisty and ruthless Olenna Tyrell -the powerful matriarch of House Tyrell- in HBO’s cultural juggernaut Game of Thrones. Her role in the series lasted until 2017, and Rigg was Emmy nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series four times.
Rigg will make her final posthumous film appearance as “Miss Collins” in Edgar Wright’s upcoming horror film Last Night in Soho, which is scheduled for release on April 23, 2021.

Leaping over walls, taking a punch, landing a kick, feeling the heat of an explosion, and sometimes holding dangerously sharp objects, these are the routine dangers stuntwomen face at the office. On September 22, 2020, Shout! Studios will unleash the highly anticipated documentary feature Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Storyon digital platforms everywhere for watch-at-home.
Directed by April Wright (Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace) and narrated by Michelle Rodriguez (Widows, Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story), Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story is the inspiring untold story about the unsung professionals, their struggles on screen to perform at the highest level, and their fight off-screen to be treated fairly and equally. The movie takes us behind-the-scenes and introduces us to the female stunt performers who drive the action and thrills of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster movies from the silent age of cinema to the present day.
Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, based on the best-selling book by Mollie Gregory, introduces us to the secret stars who provide the electrifying action that makes the best Hollywood movies and television, from the first black-and-white “flickers” to today’s high-tech mega epics. These unheralded heroines are the generations of stuntwomen who risked their lives in front of the camera, while behind it they fought for equal rights with male stunt performers, battled sexism and harassment, sustained life-threatening injuries, and returned to the fray after each battle. Michelle Rodriguez meets some of the stuntwomen who have doubled for her in numerous action sequences. Film historian Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies) guides Michelle and two stunt performers through film clips from the early days of cinema, when women performed their own stunts. Directors Paul Verhoeven, Paul Feig, and Anne Fletcher and producer Al Ruddy discuss the importance of stunt performers in their films and reveal some tricks of the trade. Nell Scovell (Lean In, Sabrina the Teenage Witch) has written the provocative and insightful narration.
This captivating film spotlights some of the most extraordinary stuntwomen of our time and skillfully weaves personal interviews with a treasure trove of archival materials, including rare onset footage and photos. Among the pioneers and rising stunt performers interviewed include Jeannie Epper (Wonder Woman, Charlie’s Angels), Julie Ann Johnson (Caprice, Charlie’s Angels), Jadie David (Foxy Brown, Escape from L.A.), Donna Evans (Total Recall, The Italian Job), Debbie Evans (The Fast and the Furious, The Matrix Reloaded), Donna Keegan (True Lies, Scarface), Amy Johnston (Captain America: Winter Soldier, Suicide Squad), Alyma Dorsey (Captain Marvel, Birds of Prey), Heidi Moneymaker (Black Widow, Captain America: Civil War), Keisha Tucker (Black Panther, Birds of Prey), Jessie Graff (Wonder Woman, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Angela Meryl (Kill Bill Vol. 1, Skyfall), Cheryl Lewis (Orange Is the New Black, Luke Cage), Jennifer Caputo (Jason Bourne, The Amazing Spider-Man), Kelly Roisin (Venom, Ant-Man), Deven McNair (Green Lantern, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), among many notables. Nearly six months since filming on Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis biopic was temporarily halted back in March, it looks like things are starting to look up for the project with Deadline bringing word that Warner Bros. Pictures has finally commissioned the resumption of production. The Austin Butler-led film is now scheduled to resume filming later this month on September 23 on Queensland, Australia after Oscar winner Tom Hanks has fully recovered from COVID-19.
“We’re back to, as Elvis liked to say, ‘taking care of business!’” Luhrmann said in a statement. “It is a real privilege in this unprecedented global moment that Tom Hanks has been able to return to Australia to join Austin Butler and all of our extraordinary cast and crew to commence production on Elvis. I cannot emphasize enough how lucky we feel in the current climate that the state of Queensland, and Queenslanders in general, have been so supportive of this film. We thank our partners in the Queensland Government and Queensland Health for their extremely diligent process, so that we can be an example how creativity and productivity can proceed safely and responsibly in a way that protects our team and the community at large. We are all excited to start working with Tom Hanks when he is out of quarantine in two weeks.”

Before he takes off for space to reunite with Tom Cruise on the highly-buzzed about blockbuster, Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is keeping his feet on Earth for his next project Lockdown with Anne Hathaway (Ocean’s 8) in final talks to star, according to Deadline.

While audiences may still have to wait a while for the highly-anticipated ninth installment in the Saw franchise, Spiral, ComingSoon.net got the opportunity to dive a bit further into the project with director Darren Lynn Bousman, as well as his return to the series and working with executive producer, story author and star Chris Rock!
RELATED: Death of Me Trailer Previews Darren Lynn Bousman’s New Horror Film
While chatting with the 41-year-old filmmaker for his latest project, the Maggie Q-starring Death of Me, Bousman noted his disappointment in having to delay Spiral a year after its original release due to the global pandemic, but expresses he is “confident enough in the movie to say it will be worth the wait” and describing it as “intense,” “awesome,” “horrific” and stating that “Chris Rock kills it, he fucking kills it.”
The upcoming film also marks the first time in 13 years Bousman has sat in the director’s chair for the franchise after being “pretty vocal” about his disinterest in wanting to return, but that after Rock came to producers with the “unique take on a Saw movie” and the producers subsequently came to him, he had a change of heart.
“I guess I’ve learned to never say never because when I was presented with the idea and heard Chris’ take on it, I was like, ‘Shit, that’s good,’” Bousman recalled. “They were like, ‘Yeah,’ so I signed up immediately. I’m just excited, it’s really a unique take and a way to kind of relaunch the franchise while still paying massive homage to what came before it.”
You can pick up your copy of the original Saw here.
Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, Bousman came to be “a huge fan” of Rock’s comedy and found that he was “really intimidated by the idea” that he would be directing the comedian, “specifically knowing it was his idea” and even pointing out Rock himself is a director, but his fears were extinguished as Rock “could not have been more collaborative and cool” on set.
“I think there were two times on set that he pulled me aside and said, ‘Hey, am I overstepping or can I give you a suggestion?’” Bousman related. “Both times he did it, he improved the scene and scenario 100 fold and that was kind of awesome and then on top of that, he would back me on a lot of things. There would obviously be creative disagreements with the producers and myself and Chris, 95 percent of the time, would listen to my idea and be like, ‘No, that’s dope, what he’s talking about is cool.’ Chris and I bonded almost immediately and he was an awesome collaborator on the process.”
Having worked in the franchise prior, Bousman discussed that one of his major objectives in returning to the film was to give it “its own unique look” to fit the unique nature of its story, choosing to move away from “the traditional Saw look of the greens and all of that” and that while working with his “insane” and “fantastic” cinematographer Jordan Oram, a thought sprouted out for the look and feel of the film.
“It started with an idea of ‘What if we made this movie take place on the hottest day of the summer?’” Bousman stated. “This is obviously not the first movie to do it, there’s a ton of amazing movies, Spike Lee’s done it with some of his movies, Angel Heart does it where heat plays a huge role in the film and so in this film, heat plays a very important role. So Jordan and I went out to make every environment feel hot and that goes from air conditioning being broken to a sun always being down on people, which creates a claustrophobic kind of feel without having to make the movie claustrophobic.”
This particular installment of the long-running horror franchise comes from a story by Rock, who will co-star with Samuel L. Jackson. Rock plays a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes, with Jackson playing his father. They’re joined in the film by Max Minghella who plays William Schenk, Rock’s partner and Marisol Nichols as Capt. Angie Garza, Rock’s boss.
The ninth Saw film will offer fans worldwide a new amped up level of deviously treacherous traps, clever clues and the edge-of-the-seat suspense they expect from the one of the world’s most terrifying horror franchises.
RELATED: Wes Craven’s Estate Actively Taking Pitches for A Nightmare on Elm Street
The film will be produced by longtime Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules – who are back once again to shepherd this re-imagining, which will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed three of the most successful films in the Saw franchise. The screenplay is based on a story conceived by Rock and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw). The film will be executive produced by Chris Rock, long-time Saw executive producer Daniel Heffner and the original creators of Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw is due in theaters on May 21, 2021 while Death of Me is set to hit select theaters, digital platforms and VOD on October 2!

ComingSoon.net: I recently re-watched Predators, and it’s a little underappreciated because it is a sequel, but it’s also its own thing. Since it is the 10th anniversary, what were some of your treasured memories of Predators?
Alice Braga: I mean, it was such a special film because Robert Rodriguez produced. I love that you’re asking this because I have a lot of love for that film. It’s a classic. I mean, it’s Predators. You think about the first one, “Back to the chopper!” You know? It is a classic for fans of this genre, and I love it. My mom loved it. So I grew up with it. But I feel that it was a special film because of Robert Rodriguez, our producer, and Nimród Antal, the director who’s super talented. And also we had Mahershala Ali in the cast. He’s a brilliant actor. He exploded and he’s doing everything. He’s going to do a Marvel film as well.
We had Topher Grace and also we had Walton Goggins that I love, and Adrien [Brody], so a really cool group of actors running from a predator. I think it was so cool to make it. I remember I was there, it felt like a videogame. So I think I have a lot of fond memories of that film, and actually was discussing it yesterday with a bunch of people, and I really hope the fans keep it in their hearts because it was a special one to make. I love the character Isabelle. She was a hard, badass, powerful girl.

Villeneuve is best known for directing Blade Runner 2049 as well as Sicario. Though Dune will likely resemble the former film more than the latter, both display the sort of experience directing arid, desolate locales that a fan would want in their Dune director, considering a sizable chunk of the story takes place on a desert planet.
Dune is currently set to be released in theaters on December 18, 2020.
