“This is our second collaboration with the Nelms brothers, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring another unique, thrilling movie of theirs to our audiences,” Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley said in a statement. “Eshom and Ian are a talented duo, and we were hooked from script stage. Villeneuve is best known for directing Blade Runner 2049 as well as Sicario. Though Dune will likely resemble the former film more than the latter, both display the sort of experience directing arid, desolate locales that a fan would want in their Dune director, considering a sizable chunk of the story takes place on a desert planet.

Christopher Nolan may have a problem. As plenty of you probably know, Nolan is one of this generation’s greatest filmmakers thanks to films such as The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento, and The Prestige, among others. The man makes dark blockbuster-sized films that challenge the mind, body, and soul.
And yet, as Sherlock Holmes would (kind of) proclaim, something is afoot. Within each of Nolan’s films lies one continuous motif: the dead wife. As surly as Matthew McConaughey removes his shirt or Tom Hanks takes a leak in practically all of their films, Nolan likes to murder the wives of his protagonists for one reason or another.
This isn’t a criticism. As stated, Nolan remains atop the list of extraordinary filmmakers, but someone may want to check on his wife Emma Thomas from time to time as the man seems to harbor some sort of dark vendetta against wives that, if left unchecked, may lead to something truly sinister…
Read! Though, please be warned: SPOILERS! (including for Tenet)
Memento’s entire storyline stems from the death of the protagonist’s wife. In this case, Leonard (Guy Pearce) helplessly watches his lady die in front of him during a violent altercation that leaves him with short-term memory loss. Leonard spends the entire film searching for Marlin’s son Nemo his wife’s killer and audiences try to wrap their heads around a plot told in reverse — it begins at the end and works its way back to the beginning. Except, plot twist: Leonard’s wife didn’t actually die from the incident but instead perished after an insulin overdose administered by Leonard himself — an event we witness twice with two different women! Cue the dramatic music. And someone check to make sure Emma Thomas isn’t diabetic.
Mallorie Cobb (Cottilard, again) haunts her husband Dom’s dreams and serves as the one thing he must quite literally (and figuratively) overcome in order to get home to see his kids. Why? Mal killed herself, you see, because she thought she was trapped in a dream state and decided to take her life by leaping off the edge of a building. Of course, she plants evidence that frames Dom for her death in the hopes that he will opt to skip prison and jump with her instead as delusional spouses are prone to do… Except, Dom doesn’t jump. Instead, he dumps the kids with his in-laws, high tails it to Europe, and goes on a dream vacation with a dream job at a dream locale with a dream team. As a special bonus, he murders his ex-luvah every day in a variety of scenarios usually brought upon by his own subconscious — and he doesn’t even have to pay child support!
In Nolan’s masterfully crafted magician v magician slugfest, Robert (Hugh Jackman) helplessly watches his lady (played by Piper Perabo) die from drowning because Michael Caine sucks at breaking glass. Angered by her death, ole Logan sets out on a quest to murder Michael Caine out magic Alfred (Christian Bale), the man he blames for her death. What follows is either a near-Satanic dive into obsession as both magicians try to destroy the other in a movie that can only be described as “the most exciting talky movie since The Conversation”; or a wild fever dream involving Wolverine, David Bowie, Batman, and Batman’s two butlers.
Oh, and just to hammer the wife-dying motif home, Nolan also murders Alfred’s lady, Sarah (Rebecca Hall) once she discovers the secret behind his act. A bit extreme? Perhaps, especially since the film wants us to be happy that Alfred (or Borden?) ends up with the kid at the end.
A lot of people die in The Dark Knight, but it’s Rachel Dawes’ death-by-explosion-while-tied-to-chair-and-talking-to-Harvey-over-a-radio that leaves the greatest impression mainly due to its ferocity and abruptness. You may say, “Well, Rachel isn’t married to either Bruce or Harvey, so this shouldn’t count.” Well, right before she goes kablooey, Rachel does promise to marry Harvey…so, it counts.
Purchase The Dark Knight today!
You can’t really blame this one on Nolan as Batman’s mythos revolves around his parents’ grisly murder — a moment we’ve now seen exactly 322 times in comic books, cartoons, and film adaptations. Although, it was always a bit odd that Mrs. Wayne (Sara Stewart) received as many lines as Viggo Mortensen in Witness, and disappears from memory faster than Superman’s biological mom in Man of Steel — a film that, coincidentally, was also produced by Nolan. Though, both of Supe’s dads died in that one, too, so maybe we can chalk that up as a wash.
Miranda Tate, aka Talia al Ghul (Marion Cotillard), bites the big one at the end of the film, but otherwise, everyone’s mothers stay alive. Although, you could count Ra’s al Ghul’s “great love” as another mother who succumbs to Nolan’s hidden obsession. The woman, seen only briefly, gives birth to Talia al Ghul while in The Pit of Dispair and eventually dies via prison riot. Her death, naturally, serves as one of the main catalysts to the events of Rises, and even Batman Begins. Are you starting to see a pattern?
Purchase The Dark Knight Rises today!
In true Nolan fashion, we learn that Cooper’s wife died of a brain cyst…and that’s really it. As such, John Lithgow’s insane father-in-law spends a good chunk of his time hanging with Mr. Cooper and co. in a role almost as pointless as Topher Grace’s. His time on screen amounts to nothing in regard to his own daughter and begs the question: why would any sane human being let their father-in-law live in their home during a corn apocalypse?
Of course, if Coop’s wife hadn’t died, he may never have become a reckless pilot, nor would he have flown to space. Clearly, leaving behind a crusty old in-law and a couple of kids is much easier than leaving behind the love of your life — a point made abundantly clear by the film’s end. So, in a sense, her death served as the main catalyst…well, you get the gist.
[We couldn’t find a video of Coop talking about his dead wife, so enjoy this docking scene parody instead.]
[AGAIN, SPOILERS!!!] Ok, so a wife doesn’t technically die in Tenet, but there is a moment where Kat (Elizabeth Debicki) is shot by her abusive husband Sator (Kenneth Branagh) with an inverted bullet which begins to poison her with radiation. Except, the Protagonist (John David Washington) and Neil (Robert Pattinson) take her through the time travel turnstile thing-a-ma-jig so that she and the bullet move backwards in time, thus preventing her death. So, there was a strong chance she would have died if not for the time travel interference, which means Nolan might be getting soft in his old age. Perhaps there’s hope for Emma after all!
Them’s the facts, folks. Now, it’s up to you to deduce what it all means! Does Nolan have a serious problem we need to discuss? Sound off in the comments below!

To celebrate Lionsgate’s 25th Anniversary 4K release of Ghost in the Shell, ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to speak with the steelbook creator Orlando Arocena, aka MexiFunk. You can order your copy here (the steelbook is only available at Best Buy) and check out the interview and the steelbook art below!
RELATED: Exclusive Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs Clip From the New Animated Adventure
The national release features fan-favorite commemorative artwork from pop illustrator Martin Ansin. A small run of the poster was initially printed on iridescent foil and given to the attendance of a special 25th Anniversary screening of Ghost in the Shell during MondoCon.
The steelbook, created by Orlando Arocena, came about after the studio approached Arocena to create the art for the steelbook and discovered that he is one of the biggest Ghost in the Shell fans out there. He initially built Major Kusanagi’s exoskeleton for Lionsgate to use on the steelbook but felt, in order to pay homage to the film, he’d create a second piece of art with more of her outer shell that could slide on and off via a semi-transparent slipcover.
RELATED: Lionsgate Acquires Kevin Coughlin & Ryan Grassby’s Mother Land
ComingSoon.net: What was your first experience with Ghost in the Shell? Whether it was the comics, TV series, movies, toys, anything!
Orlando Arocena: My first experience with Ghost in the Shell was actually back in the ‘90s. I was studying Art and Communication Design at Pratt Institute- Brooklyn Campus. I was already a huuuuuge fan of Masamune Shirow’s magna and story plots. I fell in love with his previous Black Magic Mario M-66 (Anime and Manga) and also the classic pop culture favorite – Appleseed!!! So when Dark Horse released Ghost in the Shell in 1989, I immediately had to run and hunt it down! Then, when the anime was later released in 1996, I literally had to be the first in line to see it on the big screen!
CS: How do you think the first GitS is special in the realm of anime?
Arocena: The first Ghost in the Shell is special in the world of anime because it actually does a great job of combining the traditional hand-produced (drawn and painted) cels with a bit of computer graphics and animation. All of those green-digital cutaways during the creation story of the Major – although not as extravagant as what we have today, it was still (for that time) pretty impressive to see within a traditionally-produced animation. Plus – and, yes, I’m a total fan boying now- the creator Masamune Shirow, was also experimenting with the computer and programs like Photoshop and a few 3D programs on the side, and slowly trying to build upon his existing drawing style by integrating it with the computer. SO freaking INSPIRATIONAL!!!! As for the plot, the character developments, the suspense, and the imaginative depth of it, you can definitely tell Shirow was a huge fan of Science Fiction and the realms of the Political. I would have loved to have Shirow team up with Tom Clancy!!!!!!
CS: When you’re doing a piece for a film like this are you trying to fit as much iconography and imagery as possible or is it more important to find one image that represents the story at large?
Arocena: Before being invited to collaborate with the Lionsgate Marketing/Creative team, I had quite a series of Ghost in the Shell tribute illustrations out there, which made it a bit difficult to conjure up a new visual take on this story. But I was happy that the team was also open for me to explore and offer up a unique way to tell a bit more about the Major’s story by making the packaging be an extension of that. I wanted to give something really cool to this anniversary Steelbook, so I pitched that we give the slip cover some functionality and create a semi-transparent depiction of the Major with the hyper-colored cityscape behind her and have part of the actual cybernetic depiction of her on the steel case beneath it, peek through. Making the combination of slip cover plus Steelbook be a literal representation of Ghost in the Shell.
CS: How long did it take you to make your piece from conception to completion?
Arocena: I remember getting the request from Lionsgate, immediately read the brief, had a quick phone call with the team, and then, two days later, I submitted a PDF presentation consisting of over four colored vector sketches. I hardly ever do pencils. Having been a Creative Director in the “Advertising World” in my past life, I understand how precious a project timeline can be. So I try to take advantage of it and give the client first round sketches that are digital and in color so that we don’t spend a week or two on just analyzing Black and White pencil sketches. From that initial group submitted, the cover was already in there and was at probably a 75% done composition. What took a bit of time was developing how the additional protective slip cover illustration would best function and open the visual narrative for the anniversary.
CS: Were there any licensing requirements/restrictions that you had to overcome in order to get your design approved?
Arocena: Well the obvious… I couldn’t show the Major in her “bath day suit” like the evolution sequence from the movie. HAHAHA!
CS: Does the fact that the movie is a cartoon give you an edge in that you’re translating something that’s already illustrative, as opposed to a live-action movie?
Arocena: Not really. Although, I think the big challenge for me was to be very cognizant and reverent of the history and admiration Ghost in the Shell has throughout the world. Also, making sure that through the collaboration we would create a token that would resonate with fans and collectors, resulting in being part of the property’s history.
CS: Is there a dream movie or property that you have yet to do art for?
Arocena: Oh Hellzzzzzz Yeah!!! I mean, yes, I totally still have a few “dream movie projects” and I hope I might be lucky enough to one day create and make them a reality for movie aficionados and collectors. But for right now, I can’t think of a better way to kick off my first collaboration with Lionsgate than with the 25th Anniversary Ghost in the Shell Steelbook! Totally a Bucket List moment for me!!
CS: Looking at your process videos is amazing. There are so many complex moving parts to it. Is vector art easier or more difficult than traditional illustration for you?
Arocena: Let’s put it like this… Adobe Illustrator, ever since 1997, has challenged me, pushing my creative voice where very few have wanted to play. When they all went Photoshop, I took my knocks and bruises creating commercial branded logos while pursuing my creativity with Adobe Illustrator. It definitely is not as forgivable as photoshop, but it is just another tool within my creative arsenal of tools. In short, Adobe Illustrator is my favorite video game, where the Big Boss to beat will always be me.

Queenpins will center on the story of a suburban housewife, fed up with being dismissed and overlooked by her husband and society, who decides to take back control of her life by starting an illegal coupon club. Her creation ends up scamming millions of dollars from big food companies while delivering deals to millions of fellow coupon clippers.
Bell will re-team with her The Good Place and Veronica Mars co-star Kirby Howell-Baptiste, as well as Vince Vaughn and Paul Walter Hauser.
“We love everything about this comedy, especially reuniting with our friend Kristen Bell, who is paired perfectly with Kirby Howell-Baptiste – we know they’ve got great chemistry, and Kirby has shown she is a master of this kind of comedy in ‘Why Women Kill,’” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of the STXfilms Motion Picture Group. “Audiences love this kind of entertainment – it’s a subversive suburban comedy for moms that dads will enjoy too. We’re thrilled to be working with Aron and Gita as we tell this fun story.”
The film is written and will be directed by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly and produced by AGC Studios, Marquee Entertainment, and Red Hour Films. AGC’s Linda McDonough will produce alongside Red Hour’s Nicky Weinstock. AGC Studios Chairman Stuart Ford and Miguel A. Palos, Jr. will executive produce alongside Ben Stiller and Breean Solberg of Red Hour. The project was developed by McDonough under her Marquee Entertainment banner prior to joining AGC earlier this year.
“Aron and Gita have pulled together a phenomenal cast and Queenpins is shaping up to be exactly the kind of broad multi-generational, multi-cultural comedy caper that STX have enjoyed great success with in the past. Adam and his team are a perfect home for the film and we’re excited to get going with them,” said Ford.
