Full list of September 2020 new releases:

AS ABOVE: Loosely based on the 2nd Law of the Universe; The Principle of Correspondence, “As Above” tells the story of The Earth Plane returning home, to find herself intuitively drawn to a presence she can’t ignore. Alone, The Earth Plane follows her instincts through a twisty windy hallway looking to connect an alluring call to her.

DREAMSTATES: Equal parts love story, road movie, and Americana, DREAMSTATES tells the haunting tale of two wayward souls discovering their love for one another in their dreams and reality while touring the United States with some of the most pivotal figures of the Afro-Punk movement – Sultry, sensual, and quixotic, an underground portrait of America: haunted and hollow.

ELZA: ELZA is a riveting, deeply personal story about the emotional journey of a young Parisian woman returning home to her native island of Guadeloupe. Bernadette has tried hard to give her daughter everything. She is thrilled when Elza, the first college graduate in the family, completes her master’s degree. But Elza breaks her mother’s heart by running off to Guadeloupe in search of a
distant childhood memory: the father she barely remembers.

HESAT & HAPI CARTOON SERIES: Join Hesat & Hapi as they learn their ABC’s, 123’s, Colors and more!

LET THE FIRE BURN: On May 13, 1985, a longtime feud between the city of Philadelphia and the group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By order of local authorities, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVE-occupied rowhouse. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated–and resulted in the tragic deaths of eleven people (including five children) and the destruction of 61 homes. It was only later discovered that authorities decided to “…let the fire burn.”

MISSED CONNECTIONS: Two strangers meet and form a bond at a festival, but they forget to exchange contact info. As they search for one another and through viral posts, they navigate their careers, lives, and society’s expectations of them as Black, female, and transgender.

PANAMA DREAMS: Panama Dreams transports us on the modern day search of the filmmaker for descendants of an ancestor who left Barbados in the early 1900s to build the Panama Canal – one of the seven wonders of the modern world. She uncovers the complex history of that migration and troubling issues of race and discrimination that faced the West Indians on the Canal Zone and their descendants to the present day.

SILVIA IN THE WAVES: Noa struggles to honor the identity of his recently deceased parent while his mother tries to uphold the appearance of a conventional family. Grief and fantasy entwine to reveal the complex relationship between history and erasure, identity and memory.

STREET FIGHTING MEN: In a rapidly changing America where mass inequality and dwindling opportunity have devastated the black working class, three Detroit men must fight to build something lasting for themselves and future generations. Shot over three years in the neighborhoods of Detroit, Street Fighting Men is a story of hard work, faith and manhood in a community that never settles for defeat.

THE DESTINY OF LESSER ANIMALS: A Ghanaian police inspector embarks upon a dangerous, crime-laden journey to realize his ultimate dream – to escape the ghosts of his past and return to America. Infusing the policier genre with West African cinematic traditions and a neorealist emphasis on everyday life, the film becomes the story of one man’s journey to find his purpose in the context of post-colonial Ghanaian independence.

THE LAST TREE: After growing up in quiet, rural Lincolnshire, teenager Femi struggles with unfamiliar surroundings and cultural differences when he moves in with his mother in London.

Mulan Director Niki Caro & Star Yifei Liu on Women Leading a Man’s Army

Mulan Director Niki Caro & Star Yifei Liu on Women Leading a Man's Army

Mulan Director Niki Caro & Star Yifei Liu on Women Leading a Man’s Army

She’s a girl worth streaming for! Mulan drops on Disney+ this week! In anticipation for the film, ComingSoon.net attended (in the pre-COVID times) a screening with director Niki Caro and star Yifei Liu who shared in a special Q&A their excitement for the film’s release. It’s the first Disney legacy film directed by a woman, and bringing it to gorgeous life was no easy feat but an incredible work of collaborative genius led by Caro. While the film was originally slated for a theatrical run, discover more about the making of the film before you catch it streaming on Disney+!

RELATED: New Mulan Featurette Explores The Search for its Hero

ComingSoon.net: This is the largest live-action film ever filmed by a female filmmaker. Was there any intimidation coming with that or did you look at it with excitement?

Niki Caro: The intimidating thing was my responsibility in telling the story, to the studio, and to the audience. With every film, I’ve made I had a vision that was far bigger than the budget allowed and so this time to be able to have a budget equal to the vision in my head was just really satisfying. For me, Mulan was a journey from village girl to male soldier to warrior and hero that felt like it spoke for all of us. It was a story that didn’t, in fact, originate with the 1998 animation but it was about 1500 years old and has resonating and relevant for centuries and never more so now than ever.  We tried to mine everything that we could from the ballad and also just to be inspired by it.

CS: Obviously this movie isn’t going to work unless you have the perfect Mulan. Yifei I’m curious when did you hear when they were making this movie and what attracted you to play such an iconic character?

Yifei Liu: I heard that so many people auditioned and so I ask myself if I wanted to go up (for it) what can I bring? Obviously this is a role everyone wants to play because it’s so meaningful, as a human being to really be that brave to become who she wants to be. And I ask myself this question. I want to bring me, so I need to really get through, meditate and calm myself. I was with this beautiful director and just do my audition.  I actually heard it was after 2 hours after audition and I’m relieved kind of cuz I think I did an ok job. And Niki said “so we gonna send you to this physical trainer to see and I said ok– I’m on my next step. So that means something. The actual training process really test your limits. It was fun. Every movie, it’s brand new. I did act on movies with martial art element but obviously not a professional but I’m so glad I have this whole team to prepare and some of the flexibility help with that. I learned tai chi and chi gong movements. Because Mulan, her chi is the connection of her spirit, not ego, but her true self.

CS: In addition to the wonderful women on screen, and I love the addition of the Gong Li character, how did you start rounding it out with getting ppl like Jet Li and Gong Li to participate?

Caro: They all wanted to be part of this and I think it’s a testament to obviously Mulan herself and the nature of this character and Chinese culture and also the legacy of Disney.

CS: You also had some fantastic women behind the stage. You had a female cinematographer for starters.

Caro: yeah I think it’s the only movie of this scale and genre where all the voices, all the people running it are women so: me Mandy Walker cinematographer, Liz Tom 1st AD and producer, costumer designer, makeup designer, and the only female lead. Very well prepared we were. Communicated very effectively brought it on time and slightly under budget because that’s just how we roll.

CS: There’s been a lot of talk of things we hope are improving for female filmmakers, do you see any improvement?

Caro: Yeah I am, but I would say there’s room for more.

CS: Niki for you what ended up being the biggest challenge?

Caro: The biggest challenge for me was how to tell a story about two armies going to war, a young woman going to war, without being able to show any fighting really or blood under the Disney brand. Game of thrones really changed the battle game for shooting those sort of sequences and they couldn’t be there so I was really blessed that the fighting style was martial arts – wushu – and being inherently beautiful but also what unlocked it for me was that figured out I could set that battle sequence in a geothermal valley and so that the smoke and steam could reveal and obscure violence and it could suggest and could also be very beautiful and very cinematic and I’m proud of that I’m proud that the battle sequences feel visceral and robust but never gratuitous.

CS: What were the creative choices that felt choosing from the animated and the ballad, like what were some sequences where you were like “this would work” and how is working with china affected the animated as well to bring it in?

Caro: I wanted to honor it by bringing through sequences that felt iconic so the matchmaker sequence the avalanche felt like something. It wasn’t in the script when I came on so I brought it back because I felt like that was a way we could really flex our cinematic masses and visual effects and to really spectacular avalanche but the trick there was to try to understand how she could be so strategic enough to bring the avalanche down because in the animation it’s quite cute because it’s Mushu, it’s a little rocket, and it comes out of that kind of comedy but the thing I love about Mulan the most is that how super smart she is and strategic and so we spent quite a bit of time as we tried to figure out the avalanche sequence how would she make it happen?

CS: What did you learn about yourselves as artists and people and how were you transformed when making this movie?

Caro: For me, it’s not lost on my, that there’s a line in the movie gong li’s character says to Mulan “impossible, a woman leading a man’s army” and that’s what I did. The film organism is even despite my best efforts is still a man’s army and when I first started out I didn’t think it was possible.  I used to think–so embarrassingly now–that I would somehow have to disguise myself so the fact that I’m making a movie about this very thing and the fact that I was able to tell the story in such a way, and this is so this is a critical difference from what we did and what the animation did cuz the animation has Mulan disguised as a man to find herself and our version Mulan learns that she can never be powerful unless she loses that disguise and that big moment in the movie that you hear the iconic reflection sound she lets her hair down and battles as a woman is truly powerful and then goes off to save china. That’s what I’m the most proud of and what is the most meaningful thing to me to send that message out there.

Stream Mulan on September 4th exclusively on Disney+ with Premier Access (Disney+ subscription and additional fee required).

Exclusive LX 2048 Trailer From Guy Moshe’s Near-Future Dystopian Drama

ComingSoon.net is debuting the exclusive LX 2048 trailer for writer/director Guy Moshe’s (Bunraku) upcoming near-future dystopian drama about one father’s search for a way forward for his family before his time runs out and a clone takes his place. You can check out the trailer now in the player below!

RELATED: I Am Woman Trailer Starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Danielle Macdonald & Evan Peters

It is 2048. Mankind has by now destroyed the ozone layer to such a degree that normal human beings cannot be out in the daytime. People spend their waking hours at night and almost everything is done inside the virtual realm. From work to school to socializing, most people just stay home and conduct their affairs from their Virtual Reality designated spaces. Mental depression has become so prevalent that the entire population is required to take the state-issued pill 001LithiumX.

In this new world order, Adam Bird (James D’Arcy) is a rare breed. Adam insists on waking up during the day. He insists on leaving his house and going to work in a physical office. He has 3 kids in a time when most people barely breed, and he adamantly refuses to take 001LithiumX, fighting to stay human in a world that is rapidly transforming into the artificial.

But things change when Adam discovers his heart is mysteriously failing. With no possibility for an organ transplant, Adam is now scheduled to be replaced by a cloned upgrade – an improved version of himself that will be supplied to his estranged wife as part of the Premium 3 government insurance plan. Spiraling out of control, Adam starts living on borrowed time, seeking to find a solution before his replica will be sent to raise his kids and replace his existence across the board.

James D’Arcy (Dunkirk, Broadchurch, Marvel’s Agent Carter) headlines the cast as a man who has resisted humanity’s exodus to virtual reality. With his death fast approaching and a clone ready to step in as husband and father, Adam struggles to find a way out of his situation, to protect his wife (Anna Brewster, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Versailles) and children. The cast is rounded out by frequent Spike Lee collaborator and Tony Award nominee Delroy Lindo (Malcolm X, Da 5 Bloods, The Good Fight) and BAFTA winner Gina McKee (Our Friends in the North, The Borgias, Phantom Thread).

ComingSoon.net: This is obviously an iconic franchise to be a part of, but what about Face the Music really drew you to want to be a part of it?

Anthony Carrigan: I think just having been a fan of the franchise for so long, you know, I’ve been a fan of these movies since I was a kid. So I kind of heard that they were thinking about kind of starting to get another movie together, but when the appointment rolled through my email, I was ecstatic. And I think honestly, just to kind of be a part of this story is the stuff of legend. So I’m just thrilled and very grateful.

CS: And so, it’s interesting, too, because we’ve seen you do mostly drama or horror leading up to this. And between this and Barry we’re starting to see you take on more comedy. What has that transition been like for you in terms of the acting?

Carrigan: Oh well, you know, I like to keep things interesting and I like to change tact whenever I can. So you know, it’s definitely, I mean, this movie’s obviously a different tone from Barry. But it’s a joy to kind of be a part of it, really light-hearted, silly, but also a really well-meaning storyline. And yeah, and as an actor, getting to play really fun characters is my dream. So that’s obviously just for me, just put on a silver platter with Bill & Ted Face the Music.

CS: It’s funny, too, because your character has almost been kind of kept as a secret, and even I, for the first few times that I see your character in the movie, I didn’t even realize it was you. And then, as you started talking more I was like, oh, that’s who that is. What was that like for you, taking on this character?

Carrigan: The really cool thing about this process specifically along with this character was that I was kind of given free rein by Dean Parisot, the director, to just kind of come up with whatever I wanted. So that was equal parts terrifying and fun and exhilarating. So it was cool to be able to kind of build the character from the ground up, build it from nothing and just, you know, just see. I mean, I definitely took a big swing with it, so hopefully, people will enjoy it and will kind of connect with it.

CS: I’m trying to find a way to ask the question without a spoiler, but were your shocked reactions to some of your actions, were those from you or were those from the script?

Carrigan: I mean, let me see. Let me see if I can understand the question. Can you be more specific about the –?

CS: The moments in which you would recoil out of shock at what you had just done, was that from the script or was that from you?

Carrigan: Oh well that was the script. But what was cool was that you know, with a lot of this stuff, you know, Dean, Ed Solomon, Chris Matheson, they were all just very, very playful and very fun. So we would try different things, too. And so, it certainly gave me a lot of confidence to be able to explore and find different ways of doing things. And I think that lends itself to just wanting some real honesty, some real honest moments.

CS: Okay. What would you say then were some of your biggest challenges in coming into this role?

Carrigan: Well, I think certainly the costume was brilliantly made, was just wonderfully designed. And I think it looked so cool. But wearing it, ah, that was a challenge, especially in the sweltering New Orleans summer. It was a real challenge to survive in that suit. But I also think that it kind of helped my character, you know — it kind of helped inform my character of just the performance in general.

CS: Gotcha, okay. What was it like — because you have a handful of moments with them that are more positive towards the latter half of the film. What was it like building the rapport with the whole cast, especially Keanu and Alex?

Carrigan: Well, I think for me, it was getting over that initial giddiness and just, you know, of being in the presence of Bill and Ted. I mean, it was a real kinda [challenge] to just get through my first scene and remember my lines because I was looking at Bill and Ted saying, whoa, you know? So once I got over that hurdle and started to kind of talk to specifically Keanu and Alex, I just learned what really lovely guys they are and how smart they are, too. They’re really, really very, very, very bright guys, which is ironic considering the characters that they play. But the whole cast really altogether was just such a lovely group of people and it made for some really just wonderful experiences both on camera and off-camera, too.

CS: It’s interesting, too, because I almost feel like there were some parallels between your character and Bill Sadler’s Grim Reaper when he was first introduced. What was it like getting to work with him and having you two sort of be these similar outside personas from Bill and Ted?

Carrigan: Well, I think it was really wonderful. Bill is just such a lovely guy and such an immense talent. So to kind of connect with him more just on a personal level, but then also, just being able to work with him, it was like, I think we pretty soon in found a great rhythm together and talked about the kind of dynamic that our two characters had with each other. So that was really special. And again, just like a dream come true.

CS: That’s awesome. So this one, it was originally slated solely for theatrical and now it’s getting this simultaneous release with what all’s going on right now. What is that like for you, seeing this push to still get people into at least drive-in theaters as well as on demand?

Carrigan: I think that that’s the right call. You know, I think that no matter how you see this movie, whether you’re streaming it or whether you’re going to a drive-in or whether you watch it on an iPad, I think the message to the movie kind of holds up. And I think people are going to enjoy it. I think people are going to kind of hopefully take away some semblance of joy and togetherness and everything that this whole franchise stands for.

CS: I agree. I hope they do as well. I think this one especially has a very good message about togetherness. And unfortunately, this also brought the shutdown for preproduction on the next season of Barry. What’s that been like for you in the meantime, prepping to get back to work on that one?

Carrigan: Well, you know, obviously like many people, things have been halted and that comes with certain, you know, certain difficulties in the sense that you just wish life could kind of get back to normal. But at the same time, I think it’s important right now to acknowledge that I mean, I’m incredibly privileged and incredibly grateful to have what I do have. And right now, I’m just kind of doing my part to stay safe, to keep others safe, and you know, to keep myself active in a way that when we are able to go back to work, when it’s safe, that I’ll be ready and that I’ll be able to not show that I’m incredibly rusty, potentially.
