Written by Jeremy Adams (Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge), the story will be an original idea rather than a specific comic book series and will see the titular DC hero face a deadly menace from his past and partner up with three former classmates, world-renowned martial artists Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva, to bring it down.

The cast for the film includes David Giuntoli (Grimm, A Million Little Things) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Dacascos as Richard Dragon, Kelly Hu (Arrow, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Lady Shiva, Turner as Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger, James Hong (Abominable, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as O-Sensei and Josh Keaton (Lego DC Shazam!: Magic and Monsters, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater) as Jeffrey Burr.

The film is being executive produced by Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm with Sam Liu (Reign of the Supermen, Batman: The Killing Joke) set to direct and produce while Warner Bros. Animation, DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment are attached to produce what marks the 42nd movie project in the DC Animated Universe.

Lake Michigan Monster Review: A Dizzying & Outrageous Laugh Riot!

Rating:

8.5/10

Written & Directed by Ryland Brickson Cole Tews

Lake Michigan Monster Review:

The aquatic genre has long been the home for the horror and swashbuckling genres with everything from Jaws to Pirates of the Caribbean to Robert Eggers’ recent masterpiece The Lighthouse, but every once in a while we find ourselves treated to a more comedic affair, be it SpongeBob SquarePants or The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The latest exercise in oceanic comedy, Lake Michigan Monster, may not take itself nearly as seriously as Wes Anderson’s Life Aquatic or go quite as cartoonish as the film franchise of Nickelodeon’s long-running animated series, but it does feel like a beautiful melding of the two that results in a wild ride.

The eccentric Captain Seafield hires a crew of specialists to help him plot revenge against the creature that killed his father. After several failed attempts, Seafield is forced to take matters into his own drunken hands. What began as a simple case of man versus beast soon plunges down a rabbit hole of mysterious unknowns and Lovecraftian hijinks.

Shot in black-and-white, the film has a look akin to the wacky world of the Stephen Hillenburg-created Bikini Bottom while also feeling very reminiscent of the surreal and fantastical realm of practical effects perfected by Georges Méliès in the early days of cinema and it proves to be the film’s biggest draw and also its biggest flaw. From the numerous Dutch angles to the rapid-fire speed of the editing in every scene, it certainly keep the pace of the film moving in mostly solid fashion and works well for the timing of a number of jokes and set pieces, but it also can create a rather nauseating and exhausting feeling in the viewer as they try to keep up with the characters and dialogue on screen as they race through the proceedings.

Thankfully, though, even when the overall editing and directorial style of the film may prove tiresome, the bizarre and quirky characters the story centers on and the world in which they all exist is unique and an absolute joy to revel in. While it may have been nice to see a tad more development of the central crew, it’s not really necessary of a detraction from the film’s overall quality as everybody still feels like a fully-realized individual with the revelations regarding their pasts and personalities nicely scattered throughout the story to keep audiences compelled and keep everyone from feeling like rote or one-note characters. Not to mention, many of the things we learn about the characters over the course of the story helps add further laughs to the proceedings, from familial ties to shocking secrets regarding the team’s leader Captain Seafield.

The visual effects of the film also prove to be incredible and effective, definitely those of a lower-budget project but rather than try to make some big-budget set pieces with no money, writer/director/star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews and company display their proficiency in making the most of their money. The visual trickery used to make the ghost armies seen in the latter half of the film seem transparent is superb, the more practical effects of the titular beast in its handful of appearances look bizarre and effective and the sinking of a ship in the film may look bad on a technical scale, but fits perfectly in the tone of the rest of the film to make it work.

Lake Michigan Monster is a nice break from the constant aquatic horror ventures and though some of its editing and pacing may feel a bit exhausting in moments and it could benefit from a slightly longer runtime, it still proves to be a zany, unique and hilarious ride sure to please audiences of all kind.

Fear Street Film Trilogy Moving from Disney to Netflix

Fear Street Film Trilogy Moving from Disney to Netflix

Fear Street film trilogy moving from Disney to Netflix

Following the merger of Disney and Fox, the fate of the Fear Street film trilogy based on R.L. Stine’s novels of the same name were left up in the air and now Deadline has brought word that they have all been acquired by Netflix for 2021 releases!

RELATED: Run: Sarah Paulson’s Horror Thriller Moving From Lionsgate to Hulu

When the merger between the two studios got underway, financier Chernin Entertainment exited its deal with Fox to distribute the films, with the production house signing a first-look deal with Netflix in April that has resulted in the streaming platform acquiring the rights to the trilogy as Chernin’s Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping found its unique release model to be of interest for bringing the films to audiences.

All three films have been directed by Leigh Janiak, a relative newcomer whose most noteworthy credits are two episodes of MTV’s Scream series and the indie horror film Honeymoon, which starred Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie, and sources report that she has wrapped all three films. Netflix is reportedly eying to release all three films in the summer of 2021, with one film each month in a new marketing event the streaming platform is calling The Summer of Fear.

Click here to purchase the original novel in R.L. Stine’s series, “The New Girl”!

With a script penned by Kyle Killen, the story is said to focus on a group of teens in 1994 who learn that a terrifying series of events in their town of Shadyside, Ohio may be connected and that they themselves may be the next targets. The trilogy is set to cover three different time periods, going all the way back to the 1600s. The Fear Street trilogy first hit shelves back in 1989 and featured a group of teenagers who dealt with supernatural—and often violent—threats to their small town of Shadyside.

The horror trilogy will star Gillian Jacobs (Love, Community), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Ashley Zukerman (The Wind), Fred Hechinger (Eighth Grade), Julia Rehwald (Panic), Jeremy Ford (A Mother’s Sacrifice), Kiana Madeira (Sacred Lies), Emily Rudd (The Romanoffs), Ryan Simpkins (The House), McCabe Slye (Destroyer) and Olivia Welch (Modern Family).

Along with penning Fear Street, Stine is most frequently known for his series of children’s horror novels Goosebumps, which has been adapted for the screen a few times. Its first adaptation was a show of the same name which ran in the mid to late 1990s. More recently, the series has been reimagined for the silver screen. The first Goosebumps film hit theaters in 2015 and starred Jack Black (School of Rock) as Stine himself. The sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, was released in 2018 and featured a mostly-new cast of characters.

The King of Staten Island is Pete Davidson’s semi-autobiographical film which follows his character Scott, who has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He’s now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister (Maude Apatow, HBO’s Euphoria) heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother (Oscar winner Marisa Tomei) and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys—Oscar (Ricky Velez, Master of None), Igor (Moises Arias, Five Feet Apart) and Richie (Lou Wilson, TV’s The Guest Book)—and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey (Bel Powley, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show).

But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr, Netflix’s F Is for Family), it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life. The film also stars Steve Buscemi as Papa, a veteran firefighter who takes Scott under his wing, and Pamela Adlon (FX’s Better Things) as Ray’s ex-wife, Gina.

Win Two Tickets to Live The Tingler Riff With MST3K’s The Mads!

Dumb Industries is providing ComingSoon.net with two complementary virtual tickets for its upcoming special livestream screening of William Castle’s The Tingler that will feature Mystery Science Theater 3000‘s Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff, better known as The Mads, performing a live-riff of the 1959 cult classic! All you have to do to win is email your name with the subject “TINGLER” to [email protected]!

RELATED: CS Video: Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Frank Conniff on Glen or Glenda

The show, set to begin on Tuesday, August 18 at 8 p.m. EST, will be Beaulieu & Conniff’s second livestream together, following a wildly popular screening of Ed Wood’s Glen or Glenda on July 21. Tickets are on sale for The Mads Are Back: The Tingler now for $10.

The Tingler is a fun movie to riff because it stars Vincent Price, who was a delight to watch in everything he did, including this,” Conniff said in a statement. “And William Castle’s love of showmanship and gimmicks is something to be treasured.”

The Mads Are Back: The Tingler will broadcast live via a private YouTube link that will be sent to ticket purchasers an hour prior to showtime. Those who purchase a ticket will also be able to re-watch the show and download for personal viewing. A percentage of the proceeds from the event will benefit NAACP Empowerment Programs, who engage primarily in training, education, and advocacy at the national and local levels.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 has its roots in Minneapolis, when it premiered on local affiliate KTMA-TV (now WUCW) on November 24, 1988. Comedian Joel Hodgson created and starred in the TV show, which found him playing a janitor in the “not-too-distant future” imprisoned aboard The Satellite of Love, forced to watch a series of bad movies in an effort to drive Joel and his robot friends insane. The show was eventually picked up by Comedy Central and later the Sci-Fi Channel, before being rebooted by Hodgson in 2017 for Netflix.

Beaulieu, who also provided the voice of “Crow T. Robot” during the show’s initial run, portrayed evil mad scientist “Dr. Clayton Forrester,” while Conniff acted as Forrester’s lab assistant and sidekick, known as “TV’s Frank.” Both Beaulieu and Conniff were writers on the show and have continued to collaborate since leaving MST3K, as members of the similarly-themed live show Cinematic Titanic, and also as co-hosts of the weekly movie podcast Movie Sign with The Mads.

RELATED: Exclusive: Jonah Ray’s Five Favorite Movie Punks

In 2015, Beaulieu and Conniff began touring movie theaters throughout the country as The Mads Are Back, offering their signature brand of quick-witted commentary (known to MST3K fans as “riffing”) over numerous B-movies.

The Tingler tells the story of a scientist (played by the legendary Vincent Price) who discovers a parasite in human beings which feeds on fear. “The Tingler,” as it is named, has the ability to make the spine “tingle” when its host is frightened. The film’s director, William Castle, used gimmicks to sell the film as he did with earlier horror films Macabre (1958) and House on Haunted Hill (1959). The Tingler, however, remains most well known for its gimmick called “Percepto!”, a vibrating device in some theater chairs which activated with the onscreen action. Castle also hired actors in select theaters to faint during the climax of the film. The “fainters” would then be carried out on a gurney and whisked away in the ambulance, to return for the next showing.

The Mads will also be conducting a Q&A with fans after the screening for as long as time allows!

New York Comic Con has announced that they’ve ultimately decided to cancel this year’s physical convention in light of the ongoing global pandemic. Despite this obstacle, NYCC is following suit with other previously cancelled conventions such as the San Diego Comic Con by officially moving their annual event to the digital platform. They, along with London’s MCM Comic Con, are joining forces with YouTube to bring loyal fans a new online portal called New York Comic’s Metaverse which will be dedicated to delivering pop culture experiences, right into the comfort of the fans’ homes. The virtual event will be starting from October 8 until October 11.

“We are thoroughly disappointed that we can’t gather together, in-person for the New York Comic Con we love to build and our fans love to revel in,” ReedPop president Lance Fensterman said (via Deadline). “We look forward to this weekend all year long, just like you, and with this being our 15th edition, we were particularly excited. I will miss walking up and down artist alley and seeing friends that I’ve made since we were in the basement at the Javits Center. While this year will definitely be a different experience, we are going to look to bring the best and most engaging event to our fans, exhibitors, and studios through our partnership with YouTube.”

This year’s NYCC virtual event will feature almost the same activities that fans have been enjoying in previous conventions including: fan meet-and-greets, live Q&As, personalized autographs, videos, and professional workshops. ReedPop is also planning to set up a virtual marketplace where exhibitors and creators can still share their new works.

CS Interview: Ron Perlman on Crime Thriller The Big Ugly

CS Interview: Ron Perlman on Crime Thriller The Big Ugly

CS Interview: Ron Perlman on Crime Thriller The Big Ugly

ComingSoon.net got the opportunity to chat with acting icon Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Blade II) to discuss his role in the ensemble action crime thriller The Big Ugly, which is now available on digital platforms and VOD! Click here to rent or purchase the film!

RELATED: CS Interview: Tony Dean & Ryan W. Smith on Sci-Fi Thriller Volition

Despite his character, Preston, acting as a pseudo-antagonist to the film’s central character, Vinnie Jones’ Neelyn, Perlman found that he “never saw him as a villain” and even opined his feeling that he saw him “as the protagonist of the film.”

“Regardless of how you want to designate his role in the proceedings, I found him to possess a kind of a purity that was what made him more heroic than anything else,” Perlman explained. “I also found him to have a compendium of very virtuous qualities, some of which were at odds with one another, but yet fascinating to realize that they could coexist, and my job as the actor was to find kind of an embodiment of a human where all those incongruities could be side by side. If there’s a villain in the piece, it’s Junior, my son, who throws off everything that’s at stake by his excesses and his intemperate nature.”

When it came to actually discovering his interest in taking on the part of oil baron Preston, Perlman found it to “fascinating” that he was a “an oil man, and yet a conservationist,” especially given the character’s West Virginia roots.

“He was somebody who was surrounded by a kind of a confederate mindset, but who was sort of evolved enough in his thinking to have rejected whatever philosophy that the South was fighting for and revel in the fact that the good guys won,” Perlman described. “You know, so there’s all these inconsistencies in terms of what you might expect from a big oil guy. And for me, that was like, where his uniqueness sprung from and what was going to be a springboard for me to have a really interesting time finding his way for all these things to coexist in one human.”

Getting to the heart of his “incredibly self-confident” and “incredibly brilliant” character proved to be one of the biggest creative challenges for the 70-year-old star, who had to ask himself a number of things while reading the script to properly bring him to life on set.

“Who is he, you know, and what does he look like, how does he move through the universe?” Perlman reflected. “You know, what’s the walk? What’s the talk? He’s a guy who’s incredibly brilliant and bright because he understands his relationship to god and the natural world. So he has the ability to blaze a trail that’s never been blazed before, particularly in the line of work that he’s chosen for himself, which is what puts him at odds with the mainstream society in where he has problems getting his projects financed. And yet, he manages to push on and win at a great personal cost, because his scruples kind of overwhelm all of the obstacles that come with him.”

In addition to working with Jones, with whom he’s known for “about a decade,” Perlman called getting to work with Golden Globe nominee Malcolm McDowell “a dream.”

“I’d been a fan of his as we all are, you know, from the get-go,” Perlman expressed. “You know, what’s it like to work alongside the guy who was in A Clockwork Orange? For me, that was kind of like a kid in a candy shop kind of state of grace. Vinnie Jones is somebody who I’ve known for about a decade. We’ve never worked together, but we admire one another. We’re always looking to find something to do together. But I think Vinnie is a great, great human being. He’s tough as nails with a heart of gold, my favorite combination. And you know, he was the one that brought me this project. And it got my attention in a way that very few do these days because the character of Preston is so iconic and so, like I said, complex and unique and somebody who’s humanity I really had to dig for.”

In looking at the vast range of social messages and entertainment value the film contains, Perlman feels that he “would never try to give advice to an audience” on what they should try and look for in the film but that is hope for it, as with “everything that I’m involved in” is that it compels a viewer from start to finish.

“My hope you start to watch it and it becomes something that you really want to keep watching and you can’t take your eyes off of, and at the end of the day, you really think that was cool,” Perlman opined. “I really dug watching that movie. Those are the reasons why you accept the job to begin with, is because it interests you in a way that keeps you engaged in reading it for the first time, and you hope the audience has the same experience. But I would never tell an audience what they should be looking for. If they can’t find it, then we haven’t done our job.”

Reflecting back on his time on set during production of the film, Perlman recalled his fondest memories came from “working with the guys” and “the whole cast in general,” namely Brandon Sklenar, who portrayed his on-screen son Junior.

RELATED: CS Video: The Fugitive Interview With Martinez, Rodriguez & Sircar

“He was a revelation to me and will be to the world,” Perlman stated. “You know, he’s a powerhouse. He’s the guy who plays my son in the film, one of the most well realized performances in the movie, I think. And a young actor who I feel is going to have a really big career.”

Written and directed by Scott Wiper (The Condemned) on a story from Wiper and Paul Tarantino, the film centers on Neeyln (Vinnie Jones), who has always been the loyal enforcer for crime boss Harris (Malcolm McDowell) back in London, taking care of problems and people that disrupt his illicit business. When Harris strikes a deal with an old friend – American oilman Preston (Perlman) – they find themselves in the wild hills of West Virginia. Contracts are signed and the whiskey flows in celebration, but overnight Neelyn’s girlfriend disappears, last seen with Preston’s wayward son Junior. Lines are drawn between family and friends, but nothing will stop Neelyn from getting answers — and retribution.

Alongside Perlman, Jones and McDowell, the cast for the film includes Nicholas Braun (Succession, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Leven Rambin (The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters), Lenora Crichlow (Morbius, Avenue 5), Brandon Sklenar (Vice, Midway) and Bruce McGill (The Best of Enemies, The I-Land).
