Jurassic World: Dominion Photo Teases Return to Key Place From the Past

It seems that fans will see not only some familiar faces from Jurassic Park, but also some familiar places, in the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion. A recently released photo from Colin Trevorrow’s forthcoming movie (via Jurassic Outpost) shows an InGen’s cold storage container labeled with “Site B Isla Sorna,” the imaginary island on which the story of Michael Crichton’s The Lost World takes place. Isla Sorna is also where 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park III are set. Given some elements in the photo, such as the older phone on the wall, the frame might come from a flashback. The island was also mentioned in the recent Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but fans don’t know much about what is going on there during the events of the new trilogy.

In the upcoming Dominion, the original cast from Jurassic Park will reunite for the first time since 1993. Original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum will reprise their roles as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Alan Grant, and Dr. Ian Malcolm, respectively. Plus, Campbell Scott will portray Lewis Dodgson, a character whom Jurassic Park novels fans will remember as one of the main villains.

Jurassic World: Dominion opens in theaters on June 11, 2021.

La Llorona Review:

The legend of The Weeping Woman has been utilized to varying degrees on both the big and small screen over the past 50 years and while the James Wan-produced The Curse of La Llorona was a fun enough jump fest, it suffered thoroughly from a story jam-packed with clichés and flat characters, especially the backstory for the titular entity and now she has finally been brought to life in powerful and compelling fashion with Jayro Bustamente’s latest effort.

Indignant retired general Enrique finally faces trial for the genocidal massacre of thousands of Mayans decades ago. As a horde of angry protestors threatens to invade their opulent home, the women of the house—his haughty wife, conflicted daughter, and precocious granddaughter—weigh their responsibility to shield the erratic, senile Enrique against the devastating truths being publicly revealed and the increasing sense that a wrathful supernatural force is targeting them for his crimes. Meanwhile, much of the family’s domestic staff flees, leaving only loyal housekeeper Valeriana until a mysterious young Indigenous maid arrives.

So often when it comes to a story centered on the titular entity, we are treated to a strict recreation of the legend of a woman who is unloved by her husband and violently drowns their two children after finding him sleeping with another woman and then drowns herself, but is denied entrance to heaven and wanders the Earth crying for her lost sons and taking children and drowning them in either a nearby river or the river she drowned her sons in. It’s not a bad story, if done right it can be really interesting to watch this devolution of the woman who would become the wandering spirit, but the problem is she’s too often used as a lackluster scare tactic lingering in the background of an even more boring story.

Thankfully, Bustamente and co-writer Lisandro Sanchez have found a way to not only deliver a moving present day story with a chilling horror tale, but also doing so while hardly using the titular entity — and that is by no means a flaw of the film. Strictly playing out in either its courtroom setting or Enrique’s home, the script allows audiences to actually find themselves drawn in to the chilling anti-war critiques, delving into an oft-unexplored and heartbreaking subject of the Guatemalan filmmaker’s home country. While some of its moments of non-movement dialogue feels a little too much like an exposition dump, the plot and character history being revealed at least proves to be intriguing enough to forgive its delivery.

Like some of the best elevated horror movies, namely The Witch or The Blair Witch Project, when it comes to delivering on the chills and thrills Bustamente chooses to keep things ambiguous and the atmosphere palpable rather than endless sightings of the titular entity. While this may make the film sound more like a psychological thriller in the vein of Midsommar than a horror pic, it doesn’t remove any kind of menace from the atmosphere, with nearly every scene of its 97-minute runtime filled to the brim with dread over what we may or may not be seeing on screen.

Part of the success from this spawns from the framing of every scene in the film, be it a handheld walking shot, a slow dolly or Steadicam, every image put on screen not only looks beautiful but feels like a mystery in and of itself. Be it the daytime scenes in which there is so much white cloth and curtains blowing in the wind it’s hard to believe some of them aren’t the malevolent spirit or the nighttime in which characters wander around the empty mansion in the dark, Bustamente keeps audiences guessing on when and if something terrifying will grace the scene alongside the powerful performances on display from its cast.

While some of its conversations feel more like exposition dumps than authentic revelations, the story still proves compelling and powerful, the atmosphere haunting and intense and Bustamente’s direction is superb, resulting in arguably the best adaptation of the iconic legend on screen while also offering a wonderful twist to it.

KYLIE HEMMERT’S RECOMMEND: Amazon’s Sneaky Pete

Giovanni Ribisi remains one of my favorite actors and he really gets the chance to shine in Amazon Prime Video’s crime drama series Sneaky Pete. In the show, Ribisi plays a con(fidence) man named Marius Josipovic who takes over the identity of his old cellmate, Pete Murphy, as he spends the first season on the run from a vicious gangster played by the show’s co-creator Bryan Cranston. “Pete” reunites with Pete’s estranged family who hasn’t seen the real Pete since he was a kid, welcoming Marius into a colorful, dysfunctional group that threatens to drag him into a world as dangerous as the one he’s trying to escape, but at the same time, offering him a taste of the loving family he’s never had. Sneaky Pete only ran for three seasons, but every episode is better than the last as the audience is introduced into the twisty and clever world of con artists on top of the heartwarming exploration of found family.

Seann William Scott has over dozens of great performances and films to his name, but arguably one of his least-revisited efforts out there is the 2011 sports comedy Goon. Inspired by the story of former minor league hockey player Doug Smith, the film centers on the exceedingly nice but dimwitted Doug Glatt as his fighting skills are discovered by various minor league teams and he’s recruited as an enforcer for a struggling team. With a script co-written by Evan Goldberg and Jay Baruchel, with the latter also co-starring in the film, it brilliantly blends its raunchier sensibilities and gritty on-ice violence with sweeter and more thoughtful humor, with Michael Dowse directing the fight scenes in thrilling fashion and the supporting cast all proving to be wildly entertaining, namely Allison Pill as Doug’s love interest Eva. This is one of the best sports films ever made and the funniest and most heartwarming films of Scott’s career, easily holding a top five spot in his filmography.

Loosely based on real historical events, the film tells an alternate history timeline where the youngest Romanov princess of Imperial Russia was able to escape her family’s sudden execution. Set ten years after the downfall of the Romanovs, the story begins when Dowager Empress Marie, who is the last known living member of the Russian Family, has offered a huge sum of money to any person that would be able to safely return her granddaughter, Grand Duchess Anastasia to her in Paris. Because of that, two con-artists named Dmitri and Vlad have devised a plan to win the reward by finding a girl, who looks like the lost princess. Through their search, they’ll meet 18-year-old Anya, an orphan girl who doesn’t remember anything from her past life before growing up in an orphanage. She seeks Dmitri and Vlad’s help due to her dream of going to Paris and leaving Russia. When they see Anya’s striking resemblance to the young photo of Anastasia, they’ve immediately agreed that she’s the perfect one for their scheme. Unbeknownst to all them, Anya is actually the real long-lost Grand Duchess.

This 1997 classic film is 20th Century Fox’s first ever animated film. Since its theatrical release, it has garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences which are mainly attributed to the film’s themes, beautiful animation and catchy soundtrack. In addition, the movie also featured a stellar voice cast led by Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Hank Azaria, Angela Lansbury and Kirsten Dunst. I know that it has always been a tough job to adapt historical events, especially something as dark as the demise of the Russian Empire. Despite this challenge, directing duo Don Bluth and Gary Goldman have still managed to produce a well-crafted and endearing storyline that also cleverly combined magic with its dark aspects in order to be able to tell the story to a younger audience. Anastasia is definitely an underrated gem which often gets forgotten or mistaken for being a Disney film because of its animation style similarities with the House of Mouse’s iconic films such as Pocahontas and Beauty and the Beast. Even though the Millennial generation might be more familiar with this film, I’m sure that it’s charming story and high-quality animation will still be able to appeal to younger generations who are fond of animated musicals or Disney films.

JEFF AMES’ RECOMMEND: Sneakers

Yes, Sneakers. Yes, It’s old. An amazing bit of 1990s tech thriller directed by the guy who made Field of Dreams and starring a who’s who of your grandpa’s favorite stars — Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, David Strathairn, River Phoenix and Mary McDonnell. Yes, the film completely fall apart in the final 15 minutes or so, exchanging action thrills for comedy bits that undermine the intensity of the final set piece during which our heroes must infiltrate a facility to obtain the codebreaker. Yes, it makes no sense that so many guards would randomly appear and subsequently disappear during said climax. And yes, some of the “high tech” gadgetry no longer works. But damn it all, Sneakers still holds up as an entertaining caper with fine performances, a few clever twists and a fantastic score by the late James Horner. Call it a relic of its time, or a quasi-masterpiece, but Sneakers rocks as fun bit of pop cultural entertainment. Plus, what other film so perfectly encapsulated the paranoid madness of Dan Aykroyd?

Jason Bateman reuniting with Game Night’s Mark Perez for Superworld

With Ozark nearing its end at Netflix, star/producer/director Jason Bateman is looking to keep his upcoming slate full as he has signed on to help adapt Gus Krieger’s recently released Superworld, reuniting with Game Night scribe Mark Perez for the project at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Released exclusively on Audible at the end of July, Superworld is set on Earth in 2038 in which the world is entirely populated with superpowered humans, save for Ignatius Lohman, a white-collar civilian whose father is General Lancelot Lohman of the defense agency PEERLESS and one of the most powerful men on the planet. He suddenly finds himself targeted by a megalomaniacal corporate overlord with the ability to neutralize any superpower and must team up with his father and their PEERLESS allies to save the United Nations of Earth.

The script for the forthcoming adaptation will be penned by Perez, who wrote the script for he 2018 sleeper hit Game Night which starred and was produced by Bateman and featured an ensemble cast including Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers) and LaMorne Morris. The film also marks the second in-development reunion for Bateman and Perez, with the latter penning the script for an untitled family action comedy at Netflix that the former will direct and produce and John Cena (Bumblebee) is set to star in.

In addition to directing the film, Bateman is also attached to produce the project via his Aggregate Films banner alongside David Kanter and Joff Okin of Anonymous Content. Bateman has been filling his upcoming slate with a number of major titles, including entering talks to direct the Simon Kinberg-penned heist film Here Comes the Flood at Netflix, signing on to direct the New Line Cinema thriller Shut In and attaching himself as producer to the Netflix adaptation of The Girls I’ve Been.

Chris McKay’s Reborn signs Bek Smith to script

The forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Mark Millar’s Reborn, set to be directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) and produced by Sandra Bullock (Bird Box), has found its screenwriter in the form of on-the-rise scribe Bek Smith, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Smith got her start in the Marvel writing program and has since landed a number of major film and TV projects, including a Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spin-off, an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s 100 Bullets set up at New Line Cinema and World War Something at Hulu and FX with Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion) attached to produce.

The series, created by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Greg Capullo (Spawn), follows a woman named Bonnie Black who dies in a Manhattan hospital and finds herself reborn in Adystria, the land of the afterlife that holds her family and friends, along with monsters and dragons and a war between good and evil forces. Upon the realization her late husband is nowhere to be found, she sets out with her late father and a sword to find him somewhere in the battle-heavy area.

The film adaptation of Reborn will be produced by Bullock alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment, with Millar and Capullo attached as executive producers, and Bullock is reportedly in talks to star in the project.

The project comes as Netflix has ordered multiple adaptations from Millar’s publishing company Millarworld after acquiring the publisher, including a Jupiter’s Legacy series from showrunner Steven DeKnight (Daredevil), followed by an American Jesus series from showrunners Everado and Leopoldo Gout (Molly’s Game) and film adaptations of Empress, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter and Huck, which are still currently in development.

Milllarworld has seen three of its properties adapted into feature projects in the past, with the first coming in the form of 2008’s Wanted based on the graphic novel miniseries of the same name which was a critical and commercial hit that has had a sequel stalled in developmental hell for over a decade now, followed by the 2010 and 2013 adaptations of the Kick-Ass franchise which were both critical hits although the second received much lower reviews than the first. The most recent adaptation was the 2014 espionage action comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service, which was a massive commercial and moderate critical success, spawning a sequel that replicated the commercial success of the first while receiving more mixed reviews, with a prequel currently in production for a November 8 release and a sequel and spin-off currently in development.

Bullock most recently worked with Netflix on the adaptation of the thriller novel Bird Box, which while receiving generally mixed reviews from critics, has garnered a large cult following from audiences and has proven to be the streaming service’s most profitable venture, garnering over 80 million views in its first month of release. McKay, who made his directorial debut with the smash 2017 animated comedy The Lego Batman Movie, is currently in talks to direct the film adaptation of the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, as well as attached to direct the DCEU Nightwing film, an adaptation of the classic Hanna Barbera cartoon Jonny Quest and a sequel to his debut.

Ben Affleck to helm making-of-Chinatown movie at Paramount

It’s been four years since Oscar winner Ben Affleck last stepped into the director’s chair for a feature project and while he has a number of projects he’s reportedly set to helm, Deadline brings word that the Argo writer/director has signed on to next direct Paramount’s making-of-Chinatown project, The Big Goodbye.

Based on Sam Wasson’s novel of the same name, the story will chronicle the behind-the-scenes story of the Jack Nicholson-starring film noir classic, from Nicholson and director Roman Polanski’s troubled lifestyles to the scripting of what is often considered one of the greatest ever written and the then-imminent eclipse of the ’70s filmmaker-friendly studios.

Sources report that in addition to directing, Affleck is set to produce and pen the script for the adaptation, with the rights for the novel initially being acquired by Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, who subsequently brought it to the studio and is also attached to produce.

The project is also being considered a major priority by both the studio and Affleck, with former studio head Robert Evans, who made the deal on the original film, having passed in October. Evans was also well-known for helping redefine how to run a studio in the ’70s with his funding of the juggernaut crime franchise The Godfather at Paramount. Affleck is well-known for loving film history, very apparent in his Oscar Best Picture-winning 2012 historical thriller Argo, and though it’s unknown if he will also act in the film as he has done with three of his four directorial efforts, it’s expected the project will draw A-list talent on camera.

Affleck’s last effort behind the camera was the 2016 adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s Live By Night, which was a box office bomb and received generally mixed reviews from critics, and has since been focused on his acting followed by getting sober. After coming back from rehab, the 47-year-old writer/director/actor returned to acting with the sports drama The Way Back, for which he received critical acclaim in what many consider the best performance of his career, and is currently waiting to return to production on the Robert Rodriguez-helmed Hypnotic and Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel while also developing a crime drama focused on the McDonald’s Monopoly fraud with long-time collaborator Matt Damon.

Noah Hawley’s Star Trek reportedly stalled at Paramount

Following the underwhelming box office numbers for Star Trek Beyond, the film franchise of Paramount’s long-running sci-fi universe has struggled to find a path forward and while Legion‘s Noah Hawley signed on to write and direct a fourth film in Abrams’ Kelvin Timeline, it appears the project has stalled at the studio, according to Deadline.

Emma Watts, previously an exec at Fox, recently was appointed to Paramount Motion Picture Group is currently reassessing the forthcoming film slate for the studio, namely the state of the Star Trek film franchise, which has been up in the air for the past four years as various projects were put into development beginning with a fourth film helmed by S.J. Clarkson before being shelved due to cast contracting issues, an R-rated film helmed by Quentin Tarantino penned by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and Hawley’s project.

Sources report that Hawley’s film was actually set to bring in a new cast of characters rather than bringing back the Kelvin cast and would see the protagonists race to cure a deadly virus and, though Paramount hasn’t confirmed anything as of yet, given the world’s current situation it may be an explanation as to why his project is on hold. Tarantino unofficially dropped off the Smith-penned project earlier this year but stated it would most likely be made at some point, with the story set be based on a classic Star Trek episode set earthbound in a ’30s gangster setting.

Both projects are reportedly on hold at the studio, but the latter is being considered a viable option to carry the franchise forward, seen by the studio as a spinoff akin to the X-Men spin-off Logan and may move forward with that plan while they figure out how to move forward with the Kelvin Timeline or even one of the original timelines.

With the CBS All Access series Discovery and Picard proving the franchise is still successful for the studio, it makes sense Paramount would rather take its time to move forward with another Star Trek film rather than rush one out in a similar vein to Beyond.

Department of Justice terminating studio consent decrees

The Paramount Decrees marked the end of the old Hollywood system as it separated major film studios from theater chains and over 70 years later it appears the Department of Justice is prepared to terminate this clause as a federal judge has given them the greenlight to do so, according to Deadline.

The DOJ’s Antitrust Division began a review of the decrees in November 2019 with the goal to terminate them, believing them to be outdated for the contemporary film industry and, in U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres’ ruling, found that “changes in antitrust law and administration have diminished” their importance as new laws still provide protection between the theater chains and studios.

Restrictions on block booking, where theaters must take a package of films from a studio in one license, and circuit dealing, in which a studio can demand a single license covers all theaters in a circuit, will be lifted over the course of a two-year sunset period. Torres noted in her ruling that “seventy years of technological innovation, new competitors and business models” have changed the industry for the better and that some studios bound by the decrees, namely RKO, MGM and Fox, no longer exist while others like The Walt Disney Co. weren’t major players at the time they were introduced.

Desierto’s Jonás Cuarón to helm Chupacabra film at Netflix

Though it’s been a while since we last heard word on his Zorro reboot starring Gael García Bernal (Coco) and Kiersey Clemons (The Flash), writer/director Jonás Cuarón has lined up his next project in the form of an untitled Chupacabra film at Netflix, according to Deadline.

The film is set to center on a teenager who gains an unlikely companion in the form of a young chupacabra hiding in his grandpa’s shed while visiting his family in Mexico and must join with his cousins to embark on a life-changing adventure to save the mythical creature.

In addition to directing, Cuarón is currently penning a new draft of the script for the film based on an original copy from Marcus Rinehart (Ben 10), Sean Kennedy Moore and Joe Barnathan (Mega Man: Fully Charged). The project is set to be produced by Chris Columbus (The Christmas Chronicles) via his 26th Street Pictures banner with his partners Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe while Brendan Bellomo is attached as executive producer.

Columbus’ 26th Street Pictures inked a first-look deal with the streaming platform in 2018 following the well-received holiday fantasy adventure comedy The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell as old Saint Nick. A sequel is currently in post-production with Russell set to return alongside Goldie Hawn, Judah Lewis, Darby Camp and Kimberly Williams-Paisley as well as seeing Columbus step behind the camera to helm the film.

Cuarón first found stardom by co-writing the script for the blockbuster sci-fi thriller Gravity with his father, Alfonso, and after the film’s box office and critical success, winning seven of its 10 Oscar nominations, he would get a second chance at directing with the 2015 thriller Desierto starring Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead), which was a modest critical and commercial hit.

In Work It, when Quinn Ackerman’s (Sabrina Carpenter) admission to the college of her dreams depends on her performance at a dance competition, she forms a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school…now she just needs to learn how to dance.

The film stars Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World The Hate U Give), Liza Koshy (Liza on Demand), Jordan Fisher (To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You), Keiynan Lonsdale (The Flash, Love, Simon), Michelle Buteau (Always Be My Maybe) and Drew Ray Tanner.

Work It is directed by Laura Terruso from a screenplay written by Alison Peck. It is produced by Alicia Keys, Leslie Morgenstein, and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton. This film will also mark Carpenter’s second collaboration with the streaming giant after appearing in last year’s rom-com film Tall Girl.
