Just three years after making his acting debut with a voice role in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, Grammy nominee Lil Yachty might have found his biggest starring role yet with Mattel’s live-action adaptation of hit card game UNO in the works, according to Deadline.

“I’m so excited to be part of this film with Mattel,” Yachty said in a statement. “I played UNO as a kid and still do today, so to spin that into a movie based on the Atlanta hip hop scene I came out of is really special. It hits close to home for me.”
While exact plot details are currently being kept under wraps, the film is said to be set in the underground hip hop world of Atlanta and is being described as a heist comedy with Marcy Kelly penning the script in her feature debut.
“At Mattel Films, we are looking to explore stories that bring our brands to life in unexpected ways,” Robbie Brenner, executive producer and Head of Mattel Films, said in a statement. “UNO is a game that transcends generations and cultures and we look forwards to partnering with Lil Yachty, as well as with Coach K and Brian Sher, to transform the classic UNO game into a comedic action adventure.”
Should their deal go through, Yachty will produce the film alongside Mattel and Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Pierre “P” Thomas and Brian Sher for Quality Films, while Brenner will executive produce and Kevin McKeon will act as supervising producer and lead on the Mattel Films project.

The UNO project marks the latest in the works at the studio based on their various properties, with others including: a live-action American Girl and View-Master at MGM, the long-in-development Barbie at Warner Bros. with Margot Robbie set to star and co-produce and Greta Gerwig in talks to direct and set to co-write with Noah Baumbach, the similarly ever-gestating Masters of the Universe at Sony with Noah Centineo set to star, a live-action Hot Wheels at Warner Bros., a Magic 8-Ball movie at Blumhouse, a Wishbone film at Universal, a live-action Barney film with Daniel Kaluuya producing and a Thomas & Friends film with Marc Foster set to direct.

Selma is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Selma tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.
Directed by Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay (13th) and written by Paul Webb, the movie stars David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi Common, Carmen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint, with Tim Roth, and Oprah Winfrey as “Annie Lee Cooper.”

“Chloé’s singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood,” Universal Pictures President Peter Cramer said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.”
While exact plot details are currently being kept under wraps on the project, on which the Golden Globe-nominated filmmaker is set to write, direct and produce, the film is being described as “an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western” that will explore the theme of living on the fringes of society Zhao has previously explored in her work, most notably with her recent acclaimed drama Nomadland.

“I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody,” Zhao said in a statement. “I’m very excited to work with Donna, Peter and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.”
Zhao is set to produce the film produce via Highwayman banner alongside Universal. The 38-year-old filmmaker, who recently made history by becoming the first Asian woman to receive a Golden Globe nomination for direction, is also currently putting the final touches on her first foray into the world of blockbusters with the Marvel Cinematic Universe project Eternals, which is currently slated for a November 5 release.

Based on author Patrick Ness‘ young adult sci-fi trilogy novel, Chaos Walking stars Tom Holland (MCU films) as Todd Hewlitt and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker) as Viola Eade, and co-stars Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange) as Mayor Prentiss, Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) as Davy Prentiss Jr., Demian Bichir (Alien: Covenant) as Ben, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter as Cillian, and David Oyelowo (Selma, Interstellar) as Aaron.

Chaos Walking is directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay written by Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford. Doug Davison (who worked with Liman on American Made) and Alli Shearmur (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Cinderella) are producing Chaos Walking with Robert Zemeckis and his ImageMovers’ partner Jack Rapke.

Due to recent casting speculations about the third Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film, the project continues to shape up as a potential game-changer for the partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. In a recent interview with Variety, Tom Holland doubles down on the hype surrounding Spider-Man 3, describing the project as the “most ambitious superhero film,” of all time. Interestingly, a few days ago, Holland took to Instagram to share a brand new set photo, which you can check out below, featuring an intriguing caption about completing a scene that was “easily one of the highlights” of his career.
“I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made,” Holland said. “You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I’m just, you know, again, that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it.

Tom Holland will return for the untitled third Spider-Man film as the titular wall-crawler alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, going up against Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Given the ending of Far From Home however, any number of his rogues gallery are also likely eager for a fight. The third installment to the MCU’s Spider-Man films will also feature the return of Zendaya (Euphoria, Dune) as MJ.
While most of the original series cast are set to return for the threequel, Foxx’s casting further blurs the lines across Sony’s three webslinging franchises, with the previous installment bringing back J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson from Sam Raimi’s trilogy and the studio’s Sony Universe of Marvel Characters led by Venom expected to crossover into the Marvel Cinematic Universe series soon.
Following Jamie Foxx’s Electro addition, many casting rumors have circulated including the potential involvement of another Spider-Man villain Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and most importantly, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s potential return to the Spider-Verse. The most recent casting rumor was that Charlie Cox has reportedly signed on to reprise his fan-favorite role as Daredevil.

The post Tom Holland Describes Spider-Man 3 as ‘Most Ambitious Superhero Movie Ever Made’ appeared first on ComingSoon.net.
It was a dance Steve Rogers has been anticipating for over 80 years—ever since he rain-checked a date with Peggy Carter and she told him, “Don’t you dare be late.” For us, seeing him try some of that life Tony told him to get was a beautiful bookend, contrasting with the satisfying character arc of a fallen Avenger. Irrespective of time travel logic, plot holes, and kissed nieces, Avengers: Endgame wrapped things up quite nicely. Something that couldn’t necessarily be said about other properties back in 2019 (*cough* Game of Thrones *cough* The Rise of Skywalker). So, it is with a healthy amount of trepidation that we react to the news that Chris Evans is reportedly set to reprise his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Details surrounding this “return” are ambiguous, and Evans has played characteristically coy. Any deal that was made is supposedly good for one or two guest appearances ala Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, given Steve’s elderly status in the current timeline, it’s unclear which version of the character Feige and company plan to use. The last we saw of “Old Man Steve” he passed Captain America’s shield and mantel to Sam Wilson AKA Falcon, setting up the events of Disney+’s The Falcon & the Winter Soldier—the geriatric fellow’s legacy looming large over Phase 4 (in the best way).
The Steve who sat on that bench in Endgame was 106 years young. The jury is out on a super soldier’s life expectancy—we don’t want to know. Marvel Studios could permanently end his story with his death. Old age isn’t an ailment inflicted upon many superheroes given their propensity for self-sacrifice. Of all comic-book heroes, Captain America arguably set a precedent for the sacrifice play, “to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you.” This is why the parallels of his, Tony Stark, and Natasha Romanoff’s fates in Endgame works so well. A death-bed scene with Steve would just reinforce what was already implied. It’d be derivative—which is why it won’t happen. Nor will a guest-starring sacrificial scene that contradictions (and diminishes) his pitch-perfect sendoff.
Steve will live. If the old man returns we won’t just be watching him and Peggy spend time with their kids/grandkids, we’ll witness him provide the same thing he did when he called for Mjolnir: inspiration. As seen by teasers and leaks, Sam won’t be openly accepted as the new “Cap” in The Falcon & The Winter Soldier. Despite Steve’s wishes, the government picks John Walker, in-line with a twisted (and perhaps bigoted) view of nationalism. On top of that, Sam and Bucky will reportedly face-off against Flag-Smasher and Baron Zemo.
RELATED: Anthony Mackie Comments on Chris Evans’ Possible MCU Return
The last we saw of Zemo he acted as the catalyst for Steve and Tony’s conflict in Civil War. Speculation suggests that Zemo will be running the anti-nationalist organization, ULTIMATUM, which strives towards world unity. That may sound nice but “world unity” is a utopian idea. Nothing is perfect and to demand perfection almost always results in a totalitarian-induced dystopia. Hence ULTIMATUM, a terrorist organization that deconstructs everything Steve stood for, paving the way for his symbolic return.
It’s important to remember that Steve is famous, his disappearance will need to be explained to the public. Like us, if Steve is still out there, no matter his condition, people/fans will wonder where he is and what he’s doing—a loose thread/mystery that will be talked about ad nauseam. With the country politicizing “Captain America” in the name of nationalism, the super solider whose creation stimulated patriotism might be to show up and say “hey, I’m not OK with this.”
Steve’s arc was largely concerned with confronting the hypocrisy of oversight/ideals, whether it be refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords or choosing a life with Peggy despite the consequences. Captain America (and Superman…sort of) was born out of nationalism both in our world and on the page. The Steve we met in Captain America: The First Avenger was very much on board with all that. However, he became more than just a soldier throughout the Infinity Saga. Like the character of Captain America, Steve rejected propaganda as his ideology defaulted to intuition and simply doing ones’ best.
America/the world has changed a lot since 2019. Nationalism is an incendiary issue in 2021. While it might seem vaguely nonsensical to risk Endgame’s bittersweet sendoff, it’s not without merit. Although they may permeate popular culture to an obnoxious degree, annoying the piss out of Martin Scorsese, but, like fairy tales, comic books/superheroes provide a deceptively simple (and often necessary) critique of morality. Sports dramas do a similar thing. How many times did Rocky come out of retirement? Every time training montages were put on repeat and cheers were heard throughout the cineplex. 2015’s Creed is a good example of a former protagonist (gone but not forgotten) returning in a secondary capacity that improved the character’s legacy. Balboa didn’t headline and Rogers won’t take back the shield.
The flip side of the old man coin is Evans returning as an active Captain America, revisiting the character courtesy of the Quantum Realm and time travel introduced in Endgame. The latter title’s Time Travel Heist royally screwed Steve circa 2012’s The Avengers, allowing Loki to escape with the Tesseract into his Disney+ series. Maybe that Steve, fresh off a loss and still un-acclimated with the world, fell into a deep depression. Evans could also play a younger Rogers earlier in the main timeline. Characters could visit a pre-frozen Cap, create another timeline, and change some of the most defining moments of Rogers’ career.
RELATED: Doctor Strange 2: Feige Confirms Spider-Man 3 Ties Into Multiverse of Madness
The great thing about comic book adaptations (and now the ever-evolving Multiverse) is that there’s never a lack of source material and always more story to tell. But unlike in panels on the page, the screen needs to fear that which feels definitive. As entertaining as it would be to see him mentor the Young Avengers, or help defeat Kang the Conqueror, retreading would take away from the impact of Endgame. There might be a way to bring Rogers back and improve his legacy. Marvel Studios is certainly up to and equipped for the challenge.
Flashbacks always seem like a safe bet especially when space and time continuum is in play. But that is too easy and relatively pointless—Phase 4 appears to be about chaos. WandaVision is already messing with reality, Spider-Man 3 is going to be Multiverse heavy, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ title speaks for itself. No, Feige and company have opted for an onside kick in the 4th quarter while they’re ahead. Or maybe it doesn’t matter. Maybe, in the age of delivery apps and binge-watching, audiences want are okay with subpar.
Redacted. Audiences are never okay with subpar. Thankfully, if Evans were to return, it’d be far more than a money-making exercise for Marvel Studios. They’re past that. There’s actual narrative potential, especially concerning a character that represents a country at odds with itself. Humanity’s mantra: chaos. Amid the chaos, Steve Rogers always seems to find a way forward. Marvel Studios could really say something if they ignore the gimmicky or fan service route. So, do we really want Chris Evans to return as Captain America?
DUH.

Today brought the exciting revelation from Warner Bros. of the full plot synopsis for James Gunn’s highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe standalone sequel The Suicide Squad. While it offered a little more in the way of the titular team’s mission, it also confirmed the story’s location as Corto Maltese, an island with a legacy in the larger world of DC.
RELATED: The Suicide Squad Official Synopsis Teases New Team’s Mission
The official new synopsis of The Suicide Squad reads as follows:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Created by Frank Miller, the island was first introduced into the world of DC with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns No. 3 “Hunt the Dark Knight” and is a small Latin American country with a government backed by the United States. However, with tensions between the US and the Soviet Union reaching a head, the latter decides to back a rebel uprising in the country and delivered a Coldbringer Missile to launch towards American soil, creating a scenario akin to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US sends Superman in to secretly prevent the attack from happening, but he is only able to divert the launched missile towards an empty desert and is nearly killed by the blast while the warhead successfully disables all electronics and communications in the Western Hemisphere and sends endless debris and dust into the air that deprives Superman of his powers and sends the country, namely Gotham, into an absolute frenzy. After its appearance in the Elseworlds storyline and references in both canonical and non-canonical DC sources, Corto Maltese (named after the titular character of Hugo Pratt’s fantasy adventure comic book series) would make its big screen debut with Tim Burton’s first Michael Keaton-led Batman (1989) as Kim Basinger’s Vicki Vale is said to have covered a local rebel uprising and had her photos selected for use in TIME Magazine’s coverage of the situation.
The country would later expand to the small screen with the Season 6 episode of The CW’s Smallville, in which Oliver Queen and his team of heroes including Aquaman, Cyborg and Impulse enlist Clark Kent to help break up one of Lex Luthor’s operations targeting superhumans, located on the island. It would later be revisited in the network’s Arrow, with a reference made in the opening season to Deadshot working on the island. Another reference was the Season 3 episode titled specifically after the country seeing Oliver travel to the country to assist A.R.G.U.S. on a mission and bring his sister home after she leaves town from learning of his involvement with the Green Arrow, unaware of the reality he is the vigilante.
With Henry Cavill’s future in the DCEU currently up in the air and Ben Affleck’s time as Batman likely coming to a close after the forthcoming The Flash, chances are rock bottom that Gunn’s team-up movie will set up the franchise’s adaptation of Miller’s celebrated miniseries. However, with Cavill’s desire to don Man of Steel’s cape and being unable to make his cameo in David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! one need not entirely rule it out.

Well, it turns out the rumors were true — Zack Snyder’s Justice League has officially been Rated R for violence and some language, according to FilmRatings.com. Snyder alluded to the idea of an R-rating when he teased a Batfleck F-bomb and plenty of hacking by the film’s villain Steppenwolf, and now it seems he’s a man of his word.

Justice League will be hitting HBO Max solely as a four-hour movie on March 18. It was originally revealed at DC FanDome that the movie will release on HBO Max in 2021 by being broken up into four one-hour parts that will also be released as one four-hour film, but Snyder’s new comments seem to indicate it will solely be released as the one-off film instead of the four-part series. In an informal Q&A with the director via the comments, Snyder also revealed that there will be no after-credits scenes, the release date is still set for March even as potential competition Godzilla vs. Kong just moved to the same month and its runtime is four hours prior to the credits.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League has reportedly cost around $70 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision, as well as the additional photography. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut.
Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.
