As Universal has seemingly found its path to success in revitalizing their class Monster movie library with The Invisible Man and a number of promising projects in the works, they are partnering up with James Wan and Julius Avery to develop a new Van Helsing film, according to Deadline.

The film, whose story is being kept under wraps aside from keeping it in the world of the titular monster hunter, will be rewritten by the Overlord director on Eric Pearson (Black Widow, Godzilla vs. Kong)’s original script. The new film will be directed by Avery while modern horror icon Wan (The Conjuring Universe) is attached to produce via his Atomic Monster production banner alongside Michael Clear, while Judson Scott is set to executive produce.
Helsing, who first appeared in Bram Stoker’s legendary novel Dracula, has been seen on screen performed by a number of stars over the years including Edward Van Sloan in Universal’s 1931 adaptation of the novel as well as Peter Cushing in Hammer’s film series, Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins and Thomas Kretschmann.
Most notably was in 2004’s eponymous film written and directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) and starring Hugh Jackman in the titular role in a loose adaptation of the character that Universal was hoping to launch into a new franchise, but following the film’s poor reception from critics and only bringing in $300 million on its estimated $170 million production budget, the studio elected to keep the character in their pockets for a hopeful future outing.

Though it’s currently unclear if Avery’s take on the character will be R-rated like his last directorial effort, the critically acclaimed Nazi zombie actioner Overlord, sources report the studio is very open to this possibility given that the most recent revitalization of a Classic Monster property, Leigh Whannell’s Invisible Man, garnered rave reviews and grossed over $130 million on its $7 million budget.

Earwig and the Witch (or Aya and the Witch) will be based on the 2011 children’s novel of the same name which was written by the late British author Diana Wynne Jones, who has also written the source novel for Studio Ghibli’s popular fantasy film Howl’s Moving Castle. The novel follows the story of a smart orphan girl named Earwig as she gets adopted by a woman named Bella Yaga, who turns out to be a cruel witch that takes her to live in a haunted house.

In the film, Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald’s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it’s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald’s, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that . . . but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who’s boss.

Earwig and the Witch is directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of Spirited Away director Hayao Miyazaki, who is also being credited with the planning of the film. It is a co-production by Studio Ghibli, NHK, and NEP.

After announcing in late October that Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile streaming platform Quibi would be shutting down less than seven months following its initial launch on April 6, the bite-sized streamer app is no longer operable as of today (via Variety). The outlet reports that the app will remain on users’ devices until it is officially deleted, but the app “no longer allows users to sign in (returning an error message if they try to) or access any Quibi content.”
Founded by Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, the service’s social accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have either gone private or been wiped clean as the business winds down.
Word broke in September that Katzenberg was bringing the company to other brands in a pitch effort to sell the service, composed of 500,000 subscribers, to everyone including Apple, WarnerMedia, and Facebook, but failed to sell the programming rights to studios such as NBCUniversal, who were reportedly “put off by the fact that Quibi doesn’t own many of the shows it puts on its platform.”
RELATED: Streaming Platform Quibi Reportedly Shutting Down
Variety also shared that the interactive-video company Eko is still “seeking to recoup nearly $100 million in damages from Quibi,” alleging that the streaming service’s “Turnstyle video-toggling feature infringed its patents and that Katzenberg’s startup stole trade secrets. Quibi has called the claims baseless.”
As far as Katzenberg’s future, a media exec told the outlet that they believe he will “go off the grid for a while to lick his wounds. This one must be very painful for him, because it was so high profile and it failed so fast.”
At its April launch, Quibi had roughly 50 original titles including various reality series starring Jennifer Lopez, Chrissy Teigen, and Chance the Rapper, as well as a number of major scripted programs including Sam Raimi’s 50 States of Fright, the Liam Hemsworth-starring Most Dangerous Game, Anna Kendrick-led Dummy, Kevin Hart-starring Die Hart and the revival of Comedy Central’s Reno! 911.

Well, fans will have to wait for a while before watching anything new from the Alien Universe. When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, the rights of the franchise passed to the House of Mouse, which seemed potentially interested in a TV series with the famous xenomorph. But according to Legion showrunner Noah Hawley, the talks for a show have stalled, for the moment (via SuperHeroHype).
“I know that there’s an effort to reshuffle a lot of things post-Disney takeover and it was a conversation that I had a couple years back,” he said to Deadline. “And I have not in the last few weeks been having those conversations about it. But I know that like any studio that there’s a great desire to make the most of one’s library so I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like that.”

In the same interview, Hawley also talked about the future of the Star Trek movies. He was at one point attached to the fourth movie after the reboot. But like with the Alien show, it seems that things are on hold at Paramount right now.
“It doesn’t appear to be in my immediate future,” he added. “I think when Emma [Watts, President of Paramount Pictures] came in, she took a look at the franchise and wanted to go in a different direction with it. But you know, life is long, we were very close to production but in this business that doesn’t mean much. You got to get out of the gate to be in the race if you know what I mean.”

Bullet Train will mark the eighth collaboration between Leitch and Pitt, who first worked together in 1999 on Fight Club on which Leitch worked as an uncredited stunt double for Pitt, followed by 2001’s The Mexican, Ocean’s Eleven and Spy Game, the latter two in which he doubled again for Pitt and helped coordinate the martial arts stunts on the Tony Scott-helmed film. Leitch would once again double for Pitt in 2004’s Troy and 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith and would later reunite with the star in 2018’s Deadpool 2, in which Pitt cameoed as Vanisher and Leitch directed.
Plot details for the film are currently being kept under wraps, but it is based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Isaka Kotaro. In The Prom, Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
The film adaptation stars newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, James Corden, Tracey Ullman, Ariana DeBose, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells and Kevin Chamberlin. It is being produced by Bill Damaschke (Shrek the Musical) and Dori Berinstein (One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest). Nicholaw, Sklar, Beguelin and Martin will also be joining Murphy for the film’s creative production.
Murphy is no stranger to the musical comedy genre as he previously created and produced Fox’s Golden Globe-winning musical series Glee which ran on air for six seasons from 2009-2015.
