Day Shift: Jamie Foxx Leads Netflix’s Vampire Hunter Film

Coming off from starring in Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s superhero film Project Power, it looks like Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has already set up his next Netflix project as he officially signs on for the leading role in the upcoming vampire hunter film titled Day Shift. On top of headlining, Foxx is also set as an executive producer. The film hails from John Wick director Chad Stahelski who is serving as a producer through his 87Eleven Entertainment.

Day Shift centers around the story of a hard-working blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year old daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires.

“‘Day Shift’ is a pulse-pounding thrill ride with action, danger and grounded comedy mixed with a deep mythology, the key ingredients for the absolute best time you can have watching a movie,” producer Shaun Redick said in a statement (via The Wrap). “We couldn’t be more excited about producing this at Netflix with Jamie Foxx starring!”

Stahelski added, “I’ve known and worked with JJ for a long time. His unique vision of ‘Day Shift’ makes it such a great first directorial project for him.”

Day Shift will be the feature directorial debut of J.J. Perry who will direct from a screenplay written by Shay Hatten (John Wick 3 & 4, Army of the Dead) based on the original script penned by Tyler Tice. The film will be produced by Stahelski and Jason Spitz for 87Eleven Entertainment along with Impossible Dream Entertainment’s Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick. It will be executive produced by Foxx, Datari Turner, and Peter Baxter.

This marks Foxx’s third project that he is currently working on with Netflix after recently signing on to star opposite John Boyega and Teyonah Parris in the upcoming sci-fi film They Cloned Tyrone. The 52-year-old actor will next be seen in Pixar’s Soul, Blumhouse’s Spawn, and in Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated third Spider-Man MCU film.

Faith Based Review:

The film world has been the subject of a number of satire-driven stories over the years, with everything from the industry-skewering Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back to the horror genre-critiquing Scream and New Nightmare, but one subject storytellers have frequently avoided is the world of religious-inspired filmmaking and now Luke Barnett has set his sights on the genre and the result is a mostly funny and fairly sharp comedy.

When two friends come to realize that every low budget Christian movie starring ’90s TV actors make millions of dollars, they hatch a plan to make their own genre film entitled A Prayer in Space, telling the story of the first prayer to ever be prayed in space.

The general set up for the film feels reminiscent of Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno as two down-on-their-financial-luck friends find a way to get ahead in life by capitalizing on a booming industry, though unlike Smith’s underrated gem, Barnett has utilized his “making a film” premise to actually issue a satirical point to viewers instead of aiming for a simply fun ride. The film doesn’t necessarily take any jabs or stabs at the institution of religion or their followers, but rather at its titular industry and the shadowy nature behind it.

In the money-hungry world of Hollywood filmmaking, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when the producers in the film are depicted as non-practicing in their religion and even uncaring in their efforts to deliver an inspirational story to audiences, but the manner in which they’re introduced and set the story in motion is a funny and surprising point that helps really ground the story and its satire.

From alcohol-driven performers to mildly-obsessed ex girlfriends helping with production, the character roster is full of unique and charming figures that help keep the energy of the film alive and provide a deeper connection to Luke and Tanner’s journey and many nice foils to their generally likable personas. One of the most interesting of the bunch arrives in the form of Jason Alexander’s TV actor-turned-definitely-pyramid-scheme head Nicky Steele, with the Seinfeld actor perfectly capturing his cult leader-esque personality in the inspirational videos as well as the actually-manic nature of a white collar hustler facing his own kinds of struggles.

Where the film’s real faults lie is in some of its hesitation to go a little further with its satire as well as its low budget nature, which frequently give the film a feeling of a cheaply-made production akin to the very films its skewering. There’s nothing inherently wrong with low-budget atmospheres or approaches to bringing stories to life, with some actually making the best use of their shoestring finances and Vincent Masciale does find display some stylishly shot moments throughout, while others offer an unfortunate spotlight to how limited the group clearly were. In establishing their primary financial backer as the preacher of a megachurch, it almost feels like Barnett and co. are ready to take some well-researched shots at the Disneylands for Christians, but sadly it feels like every time they’re ready to go for the jab they pull back and choose to direct their attentions elsewhere.

Despite this small handful of flaws, however, Faith Based ultimately proves to be a really charming, very smart and frequently funny ride with a unique satirical target and a sweet cast.

Jeremy Strong in Talks for Bradley Cooper’s Maestro

Jeremy Strong in Talks for Bradley Cooper's Maestro

Jeremy Strong in talks for Bradley Cooper’s Maestro

After landing Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) to star in the film last year, Jeremy Strong (The Trial of the Chicago 7) has entered negotiations to co-star in Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, according to Deadline.

RELATED: Maestro: Carey Mulligan Joins Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein Biopic

Strong is currently in talks to star as John Gruen, a renaissance man and critic for The New York Herald Tribune and New York Magazine beginning in the ’50s and wrote the authorized biography The Private World of Leonard Bernstein in 1968. Should the deal go through, the Succession Emmy winner would star alongside co-writer/director Cooper in the lead role of Bernstein, as well as Mulligan as Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre.

Maestro will span over 30 years in telling the beautifully complex story of the marriage between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. Bernstein’s colorful life included making a memorable conducting debut at the New York Philharmonic at 25 when the conductor took ill. Without even rehearsing, Bernstein did so well his star was launched the next day when his feat made the front page of the New York Times. He was blacklisted before being cleared of being a communist just before he composed the Oscar-nominated score for On the Waterfront, and he was an activist in the civil rights movement, and outspoken on issues including ending the Vietnam War.

Cooper’s main focus on the project has always been the “charged and complex relationship” between Bernstein and Montealegre. The star and filmmaker has reportedly been working closely with Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander, and Nina, over the past couple of years.

Maestro is co-written by Cooper and Josh Singer with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Cooper, and his Joint Effort producing partner Todd Phillips (Joker), Kristie Macosko Krieger, Oscar-nominated producer Emma Tilliinger Koskoff (The Irishman, Joker), and Fred Berner and Amy Durning set as producers.

Paramount is no longer involved with the project. Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is still attached. Production on the drama is expected to begin early next year. The streamer will give the film a significant theatrical release before it moves exclusively to Netflix.

The Universal Horror line is part of a new set of figures the company has developed called Spinatures, which are highly-detailed turntable-spinner mini-busts that will feature iconic characters from pop culture, horror movies and beyond! Each figure is fitted with a hole in their base to easily attach to the spindle of a turntable and then spin along with your favorite records.

For those who don’t have a turntable, Waxwork has taken this into account for collectors with the ability to proudly display their Spinatures figures virtually anywhere. Any home or office setting is perfect for them, including computer desks, bookshelves, toy and collectible display cases, counter tops and even car dashboards.

The Bride of Frankenstein is a 1935 horror movie directed by James Whale, starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, and is the first sequel to the 1931 film FrankensteinIt is widely regarded as one of the greatest sequels in cinematic history. The film has been praised as Whale’s masterpiece. In 1998, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, having been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
Sourced from the original master acetates housed in the composer’s archives at Syracuse University and original masters from Universal, the album has been meticulously restored and re-mastered. Working closely with Universal Pictures, this historic release marks the very first time the original film music has been made available on vinyl. The album features new artwork by Phantom City Creative, a 12”x12” booklet including artwork and original scoring session photography, and liner notes by album producer and restoration engineer Mike Matessino.

The first Spinature figure came in the form of Frankenstein from their Universal Horror Line, an official Universal Monster product designed and produced by Waxwork and features the iconic creature from the landmark 1931 horror film with the likeness of legendary actor Boris Karloff. Many more official Universal Monster Spinatures are set to be unveiled as fall progresses, as well as throughout the 2020 holiday season including The Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Phantom of the Opera, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolfman and The Invisible Man!

MGM is currently developing the highly-anticipated third installment with Emmy Award-winning writer-actress Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project) and Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) co-writing the screenplay. The plot details are currently unknown, but Legally Blonde 3 was previously described to be in the spirit of the first film, with the intention to make this “more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture.” The minds behind the project are hoping to draw back the audience that fell in love with the original film as well as finding a new global audience that will embrace Elle Woods and the film’s message.

The long-in-development threequel will see the return of Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon to reprise her iconic role as Elle Woods. Legally Blonde scribes Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah (10 Things I Hate About You) were previously attached to write the script. However, the outlet notes that Kaling and Goor’s version won’t be a rewrite of Smith and McCullah’s first script but will instead have an entirely new fresh spin on the story.

Legally Blonde 3 will be produced by Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter through their Hello Sunshine banner along with Platt Productions’ Adam Siegel and original producer Marc Platt.

Legally Blonde debuted 17 years ago and told the story of Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen who is dumped by her boyfriend. She decides to follow him to law school and while she is there figures out that there is more to her than just her looks. In the 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Woods heads to Washington D.C. to join the staff of a congresswoman in order to pass a bill to ban animal testing. The original movie grossed $141 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, with the sequel earning $124 million off of a $45 million budget.
