Paramount Movies has released the official trailer for the upcoming drama thriller Jungleland, starring Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, The Gentlemen, Pacific Rim) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken, Godless, Seberg). You can check out the trailer now in the player below!

Stan (Charlie Hunnam) and Lion (Jack O’Connell) are two brothers struggling to stay relevant in the underground world of bare-knuckle boxing. When Stan fails to pay back a dangerous crime boss (Jonathon Majors), they’re forced to deliver an unexpected traveler as they journey across the country for a high-stakes fighting tournament. While Stan trains Lion for the fight of his life, a series of events threaten to tear the brothers apart but their love for one another and belief in a better life keep them going in this gripping drama that proves family pulls no punches.

The movie also stars Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country, Da 5 Bloods), Jessica Barden (Hanna), and Emmy nominee John Cullum (Northern Exposure). Jungleland is directed by Max Winkler (Flower) who co-wrote the script along with Theodore Bressman (Future Man) and David Branson Smith (Ingrid Goes West).

Jungleland is produced by Jules Daly, Kevin J. Walsh, Ryan Stowell, Brad Feinstein. Ridley Scott executive produces. The movie will premiere on Digital and On Demand on November 10.

Xochitl Gomez Joins Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Deadline brings word that Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club) has joined Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Details on Gomez’s role in the sequel are being kept under wraps.

Cumberbatch will next be reprising his role as Dr. Stephen Strange in the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man 3 in addition to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The sequel is being described as the first horror film in the MCU with Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch returning as the titular sorcerer supreme and Elizabeth Olsen also appearing as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. According to Kevin Feige, the upcoming Disney+ shows WandaVision and Loki will both directly impact the events the Doctor Strange sequel.

Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch appeared in Avengers: Endgame, where they were both last seen attending Tony Stark’s funeral. Loki also appeared in Endgame and was last seen after the events of the Avengers’ first battle in New York, where he escapes with the Tesseract cube.

Originally set to be directed by Scott Derrickson, the sequel will now be helm by Spider-Man‘s Sam Raimi with Loki head writer Michael Waldron set to rewrite the script that was first written by The Turning scribe Jade Bartlett. Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Benedict Wong will be reprising their roles, with Rachel McAdams not expected to return to her role of Dr. Christine Palmer.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on March 25, 2022.

The first Doctor Strange movie was released in 2016 with Benedict Cumberbatch starring in the titular role. Joining him in the film were Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, and Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West. It also featured the MCU debut of critical characters from the pages of Marvel Comics, including Benedict Wong as Wong, plus Mads Mikkelsen as villain Kaecilius, and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One (who is of Celtic origin in the film instead of East Asian origin). Doctor Strange was directed by Scott Derrickson, whose previous credits were primarily horror films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver Us from Evil.

Calico Joe: George Clooney to Direct Film Based on John Grisham’s Novel

Academy Award-nominated actor George Clooney and long-time collaborator Grant Heslov are in the process of developing a film adaptation of Calico Joe, based on bestselling author John Grisham’s baseball-themed drama novel of the same name. On top of producing, Clooney is also expected to helm the project.

“John has written a beautiful story and the chance to collaborate with Bob to bring it to the screen is just fantastic,” said Clooney and Heslov in a joint statement (via Deadline).

First published in 2012, Calico Joe is set in the world of Major League Baseball which will center around three characters about a father and a son as well as a young rookie who has a promising future ahead of him. The story was also inspired by the real-life story of Ray Chapman and Grisham’s own experience where he once dreamt of becoming a professional baseball player before experiencing a near-fatal pitch that made him quit the sport.

The official synopsis reads: “It’s the summer of 1973, and Joe Castle is the boy wonder of baseball, the greatest rookie anyone has ever seen. The kid from Calico Rock, Arkansas, dazzles Chicago Cubs fans as he hits home run after home run, politely tipping his hat to the crowd as he shatters all rookie records. Calico Joe quickly becomes the idol of every baseball fan in America, including Paul Tracey, the young son of a hard-partying and hard-throwing New York Mets pitcher. On the day that Warren Tracey finally faces Calico Joe, Paul is in the stands, rooting for his idol but also for his dad. Then Warren throws a fastball that will change their lives forever.”

The film adaptation will be produced by Clooney and Heslov through their Smokehouse Pictures banner along with Grey Water Park Productions’ Bob Dylan. ZQ Entertainment is financing the script development with Petr Jkl, Ara Keshishian and Martin J. Barab set as executive producers.

“George and Grant see in this book what I see in it – a powerful story that will resonate with young and old alike. People in all walks of life will be able relate to it,” Dylan said.

Honest Thief Review:

“Liam Neeson versus [insert enemy here].” It’s the ultimate formula for the action genre since the Oscar nominee found a new niche audience with 2008’s Taken and it’s one that’s delivered such highs as Joe Carnahan’s The Grey, Scott Frank’s A Walk Among the Tombstones and Jaume Collet-Serra’s Non-Stop and though his latest venture, Honest Thief, may not reach the mid-level bars they’ve set, it still proves to be a plenty fun and darkly humorous thrill ride.

They call him the “In-and-Out Bandit” because meticulous thief Tom Carter has stolen $9 million from small-town banks while managing to keep his identity a secret. But after he falls in love with the bubbly Annie, Tom decides to make a fresh start by coming clean about his criminal past, only to be double-crossed by two ruthless FBI agents, requiring him to dive back into his criminal skillset to set things right and earn his second chance at life.

The story of a seasoned criminal seeking an out from his past or a way to redeem it for a better life is certainly nothing new, but the way co-writers Mark Williams and Steve Allrich establish their world and their characters feels like a rich enough tapestry of interesting-enough characters with charming and likable personalities are compelling enough draws to forgive the unoriginality and predictability of the story. The means in which Tom would rob the banks while avoiding detection is a simple and believable explanation rather than a more convoluted or uninteresting approach, the motives behind his past feel grounded and are movingly told once revealed that it allows audiences to maintain the connection they’ve made with their antihero protagonist, a character type Williams has perfected on Netflix’s Ozark.

In addition to the nicely-written characters, one of the film’s real strong points that helps it stand out amongst the crowd of geriatric action-thrillers is the dark sense of humor that pervades the affair. Whether it’s Jeffrey Donovan’s dog-carrying FBI agent, Robert Patrick’s quick-witted Agent Baker, Neeson’s bluntly honest Tom or Kate Walsh’s easy-to-connect-to Annie, the pacing of the film always feels as though it’s steadily moving not just thanks to the action of the film but from much of the levity the cast all bring to their performances, especially the 52-year-old Burn Notice alum. There’s no denying the burgeoning love story between Tom and Annie is the heart of the film and is relatively sweet to watch, but the bond that develops between Donovan’s Agent Meyers and his reluctantly-owned small dog Tazzie brings out some of the best jokes in the film.

Much like the story of the film, the action itself is fairly hit-or-miss in its execution, with plenty of pulse-pounding sequences any genre fan is sure to marvel at though many display the smaller budget the film was given. From shoddy CGI fire that could make the filmmakers of the Baywatch remake blush to a few hand-to-hand sequences cutting a little too frequently to hide the use of a stunt double or two, the sequences themselves are mostly enjoyable, even if a little poorly made.

One of the real shining lights of the film, to no one’s surprise, is the delightfully wicked performance from Jai Courtney as the villainous corrupt Agent Nivens. Time and time again, the Australian performer has delivered charming performances in every role from the antihero villain Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad to a less-prepared Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genisys, and from the moment he’s introduced on screen, he chews up every bit of scenery he can with his performance. He walks a fine line between a knowing understanding that what he’s doing is essentially wrong while also believably trying to convince reluctant partner Agent Hall (a warm Anthony Ramos), the audience and even himself, making for a brilliant performance to watch from start to finish.

There’s no denying there’s plenty of predictability to Mark Williams’ Honest Thief, but thanks to a darkly humorous script, some exciting action sequences and stellar performances from Jeffrey Donovan and Jai Courtney, as well as strong ones from Neeson and Anthony Ramos, this is an action-thriller sure to please genre fans and those looking for a good popcorn flick.

CS Interview: Co-writer/director Mark Williams talks Honest Thief

ComingSoon.net got the opportunity to chat with Emmy nominee Mark Williams (Ozark) to discuss his work as co-writer and director on the Liam Neeson-starring action-thriller Honest Thief, which is set to hit select theaters this Friday!

Looking back on its journey from his mind to the screen, Williams described the development process for the Neeson vehicle as “a long road, as all things are” and that a lot of the time spent evolving the script and characters came from “really trying to figure out a way to walk that line of gray.”

“You know, we’re all good, we’re all bad, for me, it’s really like, ‘Can you be bad and go good and can you have a second chance in life,’” Williams pondered. “So, for me, it was really just figuring out what kind of character that would be great to explore. Obviously within a genre that we’ve all seen a thousand movies of, and so, it’s like, how can we have the stuff that blows up and do the fun shootouts and car chases, but also have a character that has a moral compass that’s a little bit different than we’ve seen before. So from there, I ended up bringing on a writer to do a draft of the script, and we worked that over for a while. And then, at some point, I’d been debating on who would direct it, and then at some point, I’d end up directing Family Man, which then like, well, maybe I’m going to direct this. So I ended up doing a big rewrite on it to get it to where it was. Then, I got lucky that my guy who I had in mind when I was thinking about it was this guy Liam Neeson, I don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but I thought, yeah, he might be good for it. I sent it to his agent, just knowing how ridiculously a long shot that is, and I got that crazy call one day of like, ‘Liam likes your script. He’d like you to sit down with him and talk about it.’ I was like, ‘Oh, oh wow. Okay.’ So then I hopped on a plane, flew to New York and sat down with Liam and talked about it, and then, from there, you go very fast.”

In addition to having the 68-year-old action veteran leading the cast, the roster for the film includes everyone from The Suicide Squad‘s Jai Courtney to The Umbrella Academy‘s Kate Walsh, Terminator 2‘s Robert Patrick, Hamilton‘s Anthony Ramos and Jasmine Cephas Jones and Burn Notice‘s Jeffrey Donovan, all of which he credits to landing Neeson to star.

“Once I got Liam, I think it opened up the floodgates a little more than the average actor, so the opportunities were there for quite a few,” Williams expressed. “For me, it was all about finding that right chemistry between the different characters, and we started with trying to find Annie’s character because as much as this is an action thriller and everything else, it’s a love story. If the love story can work, that’s what may make it different than the other action movies that we’ve seen of the same ilk. So it really was about finding that perfect Annie, and Kate is such a lovely human being, that just she’s fun. She’s what you might expect out of her, but to the Nth degree of like, just caring and loving and always with a joke, and obviously gorgeous and everything else. So when we got her, we knew we had the love story piece. So then really it was about finding who are those different FBI agents, and I have four of them, so I wanted to give a variety and a different feel to them. Jeffrey Donovan, he’s just a genius in his abilities. I mean, every take he would do, he would do something different, and just on the turn of a dime, he’s just so smart and so clever and always a good take. And it’s — the hard part is you can’t edit between the takes because they’re all different, but they’re amazing in themselves.

“Jai Courtney is just a stud, and that was really important, to have somebody that is formidable to go up against, and he works so hard,” Williams continued. “Robert Patrick is always fun because Terminator 2 is probably my favorite movie of all-time, so, it was a joy. Really my casting directors, Mary Vernieu and Michelle Wade Byrd, they were like, ‘You’ve got to really pay attention to this Anthony Ramos guy.’ I’m like, “I haven’t seen Hamilton. I mean, I see the clips you’re sending me, but’ — they’re like, ‘No. You need to pay attention to Anthony Ramos.’ Finally, after I passed on him I think maybe three or four times they said, ‘Trust us,’ and I said, ‘Okay, I’m trusting you.’ He was unbelievable and really what a great human, but also, he came to work so hard every day. Not to give anything away as you write this, but obviously that scene in the garage, he went toe to toe with Liam, and it was something to watch, just even when we were watching him do it in person, so it was kind of great to see.”

The casting of Burn Notice alum Donovan also brought a star looking to collaborate even further with the minds behind the camera, looking to fill out the backstory of his character in order to better bring him to life on screen, and Williams found it to be an “awesome” experience from his end as the 52-year-old star had “so many creative ideas.”

“It was almost more about wrangling like this idea and really kind of putting it into a box,” Williams brightly explained. “I mean, as you know, back story is back story, so it was more about what he needed to bring to the character. You know, it was how he could figure it out. But he’s the one that actually we know the most about back story because we learn about his ex-wife and the divorce and the reason why he’s got Tazzie. So for him, his back story was actually really, really important to give a sense, otherwise it would just be weird to have him carrying a little dog everywhere he went. So it was really important. But no, he has such good ideas, like I said, that it was a fun process, and he’s become a good friend in that process, too.”

When it came to balancing the more darkly comedic elements of the script with the love story and action-thriller aspects, Williams laughed and found it wasn’t too difficult as “it’s kind of me” and that it was a smooth process of infusing the “wit or sarcasm” into the characters while ensuring he tried hard to “pull it out in the right place.”

“Jeffrey Donovan did me so many favors because he’s just that way and he is so funny and smart, he played it very well,” Williams stated. “You know, he is almost the comic thread to — I mean, it’s not comedy, but he’s the humorous thread throughout the whole thing. Really when I was trying to figure out how to layer his character up a little bit more, I was like, if this FBI guy is what we always see, how do you make him a little bit different? And then, to give him a 15-pound dog that he just doesn’t want and watch him play off Tazzie, it really kind of sparked, and then I watched them on set, too, how they built their relationship as it went over the course of the movie. So it was kind of just working. Obviously, you know, Kate has a really good sense of humor, she’s very fun, and Liam’s hysterical in his own kind of Irish way, not the same as Jeffrey or Kate for sure, but he’s a very funny guy. So they all helped, obviously, bring out those moments, and when there were times to stop, because obviously as you say, once it goes, it goes, and you have to steal moments to breathe, really.”

Though the casting and the writing remained a mostly smooth process for Williams, the real challenges arrived as production got underway and proceeded in a quick fashion, leaving him to “figure out a lot of things in a hurry” while prepping to begin shooting.

“We basically started prepping, let’s say August and we were shooting at the end of October, so it’s a pretty fast prep, and the weather was changing on us pretty drastically,” Williams recalled. “I think that was one of the biggest hurdles that we faced. In fact, one night we were inside the house — actually, it was the night we were shooting the garage scene and somebody said, ‘It’s snowing outside.’ This is, you know, early November, I think, and we’re like, ‘Okay, whatever, we’re inside. It’s fine, whatever.’ Then I walked outside and there was that [motions with hand] much snow on the ground in about an hour and a half. Then you’re like, ‘Oh that’s not snow. That’s like a serious storm.’ We couldn’t get out of the house. All the trucks were trapped. It became a real event. Then you’re like, ‘Okay, we got through that.’ Then what you realize though is there’s snow everywhere, and this is the only part of the movie that has any snow. There’s no snow in the movie, and all of a sudden you’re like, you’re clearing streets and having to get rid of snow banks on the sides of the roads. New England weather is not always friendly, so that was part of the biggest challenges. But other than that, I think it was just fairly normal challenges of having enough time and getting everybody to stay focused when we’re shooting in the middle of the night one night in a park and it was cold and our generator went down and all the lights were out. We’re just standing there and going, ‘Uh, it’s two in the morning. We have no power’ and that kind of stuff.”

The New England setting and shooting locations spawned from a lot of conversations with co-writer Steve Allrich as the two went back and forth on a number of possible big cities across the country, including Chicago, where Williams previously made his directorial debut.

“As you flip around the United States, there’s only so many big cities that you really want to see, I think at one point we talked about Chicago, but then I had just shot Family Man in Chicago and I’m like, ‘I don’t think I want to go back and do the same thing,’” Williams noted. “So, I was just looking around on a map and going, you know, Boston’s a really cool city because it’s got its own character. It’s a specific city in the US, whereas a lot of cities are fairly interchangeable, and Boston has that certain style. We used the architecture a lot, you may not catch that, but there’s a lot of churches in New England, and there’s a lot of churches in the movie, which again, comes back to the theme of the movie of redemption and everything else. So I sneak it in there, even if people aren’t paying attention. But it wasn’t even hard to do because every other corner has a church on it in New England.”

Written by Steve Allrich (The Canyon) and directed by Mark Williams, the co-creator of the hit Netflix crime thriller Ozark, Honest Thief will follow a bank robber (Neeson) who after attempting to turn himself in after falling in love with an employee from where his loot is stashed must deal with the complications that arise when his case is taken on by corrupt FBI agents, played by Jai Courtney and Anthony Ramos.

Williams produced Honest Thief alongside Tai Duncan, Stephen Emery and Myles Nestel of Solution Entertainment Group, which sold the international rights to the film to Briarcliff and Open Road in June.

Neeson has found large success in recent years in the action genre, starring in the fan-favorite Taken trilogy and starring in this year’s box-office hit The Commuter, the fourth collaboration between him and director Jaume Collet-Serra. The 66-year-old actor will next be seen in the upcoming comedy Made in Italy, the directorial debut of James D’Arcy (Avengers: Endgame), which is scheduled for an August 7 release.

Honest Thief is set to hit theaters on October 16.

Launching the following week on October 13 is Evil Eye, from talented young directors Elan Dassani and Rajeev Dassani (A Day’s Work, Jinn) and executive produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico, White Tiger), and Nocturne written and directed by filmmaker Zu Quirke (Zugzwang, Ghosting) making her feature film debut. The latter four films will launch in 2021.

Furiosa Star Anya Taylor-Joy Praises Charlize Theron’s Performance

Earlier this week, Anya Taylor-Joy was confirmed to headline George Miller’s upcoming Furiosa spinoff as a younger version of the character originated by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. Many fans were originally hoping to see Theron herself reprise the role in a potential sequel, but it seems that Miller is more interested in winding the clock backward to explore Furiosa’s origin story. Fortunately, Taylor-Joy is also a huge fan of Theron’s, and she’s well aware that expectations are high (via SuperHeroHype).

Taylor-Joy discussed landing the role while appearing on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast (via IndieWire). Right now, she’s reuniting with The Witch director Robert Eggers on his next move, The Northman. That movie is shooting in Belfast, which also happens to be where Taylor-Joy saw Fury Road for the first time. And it sounds like her casting prompted a literal stroll down memory lane.

“I walked past the cinema where I first was amazed by this incredible mind of George Miller,” said Taylor-Joy. “It’s difficult to put into words. I feel so humbled and grateful. I think the first thing I thought was ‘I am so excited to work so hard.’ The level of commitment that has been shown by those who came before me, I endeavor to match that. That makes me really excited. I have so much respect for the originators of this crazy world and this collection of characters. I am excited to work really hard.”

Theron previously confessed that it was “heartbreaking” for her to walk away from Furiosa. Regardless, Taylor-Joy has already begun developing her own take on the character. She acknowledged that she won’t be able to match Theron’s intensity. However, she aims to work as hard as she can to honor her performance.

“I fell in love with Furiosa because of the way Charlize presented her,” added Taylor-Joy. “She did such an incredible job. It was so beautiful. I can’t even think about trying to step into her shoes. It has to be something different because it just can’t be done.”

“I’ve already started dreaming about [Furiosa] and she’s coming in very strong,” continued Taylor-Joy. “I’m so committed to working as hard as possible as I can. I always said that I wanted a role that I would have to give everything to, it wouldn’t just be my mind but my body, what I’m doing with myself when I’m not on set. I’m so excited for that and to push myself past the limits of what my brain thought was possible.”

Furiosa will also star Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in supporting roles. Warner Bros. has yet to give the film an official greenlight.

Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow return to executive produce Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Dominion, with Trevorrow once again directing the next chapter in one of the biggest franchises in the history of cinema. Producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley once again partner with Spielberg and Trevorrow in leading the filmmakers for this installment.

The upcoming threequel will be starring returning cast members from the first two Jurassic World films include Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy Daniella Pineda, Justice Smith as well as original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Campbell Scott. It will also feature Mamoudou Athie (Sorry for You Loss), DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It), Dichen Lachman (Animal Kingdom, Altered Carbon), Scott Haze (Venom, Antlers).

Joining the Jurassic team for the first time is Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim Uprising, The Black Hole), who has crafted the screenplay with Trevorrow. They will work off a story by Derek Connolly and Trevorrow, who together co-wrote Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom.

Jurassic World: Dominion is currently set to debut in theaters on June 10, 2022, with The Way I See It now in select theaters and hitting MSNBC on Friday!

The documentary offers an unprecedented look behind the scenes of two of the most iconic Presidents in American History, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan, as seen through the eyes of renowned photographer Pete Souza. As the Official White House Photographer, Souza was an eyewitness to the unique and tremendous responsibilities of being the most powerful person on Earth. The movie reveals how Souza transforms from a respected photojournalist to a searing commentator on the issues we face as a country and a people.

The film is helmed and produced by Dawn Porter, the winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival for her pro-choice documentary Trapped, with Oscar and Emmy-winning producer Evan Hayes (Free Solo), Oscar and Emmy winner Laura Dern (Marriage Story) and Jayme Lemons attached to produce via the duo’s Jaywalker Pictures banner in association with Platform One Media.

The Way I See It was originally set to have its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival before it was cancelled due to the global pandemic and instead is now available in select theaters and set to debut on MSNBC on Friday!

Monster Hunter international trailer offers more Tony Jaa

While simultaneously unveiling the domestic trailer for the film adaptation of the Capcom franchise, Sony Pictures has released the international trailer for the Milla Jovovich-led Monster Hunter which features a much better look at Tony Jaa’s Hunter character. The trailer can be viewed in the player below!

Monster Hunter centers on the leader of a UN military team named Artemis, played by Jovovich, who is transported to another realm populated by monsters. There she meets the Hunter (Jaa), with the two teaming up to close a portal to prevent monsters from attacking earth. The movie will be a highly stylish big-screen adaptation of the video game.

The film adaptation will be led by Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil franchise) and Tony Jaa. It will also star Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Drive), T.I. Harris (Ant-Man and The Wasp), Diego Boneta (Luis Miguel, Rock of Ages), Meagan Good (Code Black), and Josh Helman (X-Men: Days of Future Past).

Monster Hunter is written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The film is a production by Sony Pictures, Constantin Film, and Impact Pictures with Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer, Martin Moszkowicz, and Dennis Berardi serving as producers.

The Capcom video game series consists of action role-playing games where players and their friends work together to take down larger-than-life beasts in a living, breathing ecosystem. Since the first Monster Hunter title made its debut 14 years ago in 2004, the series has attracted a dedicated fan base, and grown into a global mega-hit with Monster Hunter: World, the latest title in the series, shipping 10 million units worldwide, with cumulative sales of the series exceeding 49 million units as of August 20, 2018.
