SXSW Announces full 2021 film, TV & music festival lineup!

Nearly a month after giving fans an early look at what they could expect from this year’s conference and festivals, South by Southwest has unveiled the full lineup for the 28th edition of the SXSW Film Festival, including the opening night headliner of Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil!

The 2021 Film Festival is comprised of 75 features including 57 World Premieres, three International Premieres, four North American Premieres, one U.S. Premiere, eight Texas Premieres and 53 films from first-time filmmakers and 84 Short Films including Music Videos, five Episodic Premieres, six Episodic Pilots, 20 Virtual Cinema projects, 14 Title Design entries and 30 Special Events.

“It’s been a year unlike any we’ve experienced, first marked by the cancellation of SXSW 2020,” Janet Pierson, Director of Film, said in a statement. “We feel privileged to have been able to pivot to SXSW Online and present a fantastic treasure trove of programming, including a pared down and wonderful selection of films that we know will delight, entertain and move our attendees. SXSW Online will bring attendees a multifaceted event that speaks to so many areas of creativity in one five-day experience that everyone can access on their laptops, phones and TVs. While we won’t have the wonderful in-person SXSW that we know and love, we can gather together to be inspired by the work.”

This year’s SXSW will launch seven films at a time in two-hour increments from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST, with most launching during the first three days beginning with films featuring global access and no audience capacity limits. Once a film is available, it will remain available on-demand until it hits its audience capacity or the event ends, though many films do not have a capacity limit and will be available for the duration of the event. While SXSW is a global event, certain films will be restricted to access in the United States due to rights and/or filmmaker or distributor discretion.

For this year’s SXSW Online experience, the festival is offering a number of platforms across web, mobile and TV devices, including a Connected TV app that can be accessed via Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Android TV and Samsung TV and feature four concurrent channels curated by SXSW programmers in addition to over 600 on-demand Films, Conference Sessions, Comedy and Live Music Showcases, while the online platform, Swapcard, will be available through browsers and mobile apps.

Watchmen alum Hong Chau joins Aronofsky’s The Whale adaptation

Nearly a month after the project was first announced with Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol) set as the lead, Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of The Whale at A24 has continued to expand its cast with the addition of Golden Globe-nominated Watchmen alum Hong Chau, according to Deadline.

Based on Samuel D. Hunter’s acclaimed 2012 play, the story is set on the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, and centers on a six-hundred-pound recluse as he hides away in his apartment eating himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter, he reaches out to her, only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen. Chau is currently set to star as Fraser’s best friend, while sources report that Aronofsky is also in talks with Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead) and Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) to join the cast, the latter of whom would portray Fraser’s daughter in the film.

“Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me,” Hunter previously said in a statement. “This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

Hunter will adapt the play, which won the Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and a GLAAD Media Award, for the screen while Aronofsky is set to direct and co-produce via his Protozoa Pictures alongside A24.

The Oscar-nominated writer/director last sat in the director’s chair for the 2017 psychological horror pic mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, which received largely polarized reviews from critics but was generally scorned by audiences, earning a notorious “F” rating on CinemaScore, one of only 22 films to receive such a score.

CS Soapbox: Why Mark Mothersbaugh’s Ragnarok is the Most Eccentric MCU Score

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a lot of things right over its decade long (and counting) run, but, for whatever reason, has remained curiously subpar in the film score category. After 23 films, it’s weird to think that only Alan Silvestri’s work on the Avengers films has left much of a cultural impact, and even then only due to its rousing — and, frankly, quite remarkable — main theme.

The MCU features plenty of talented musicians, namely Patrick Doyle, Craig Armstrong, Henry Jackman, Michael Giacchino, Ludwig Göransson and John Debney, just to name a few, but, until recently, failed to create musical continuity between films. This glaring oversight came to a head back in 2016 when a video criticizing modern film scores and the MCU in general was published on YouTube and instantly went viral:

Around this same time, Taika Waititi and composer Mark Mothersbaugh were neck deep in Thor: Ragnarok and very much conscious of the criticism surrounding the MCU’s film score process. As such, rather than opt for a traditional score designed around temp music, the duo decided to create something far more unique that would perfectly mesh with Waititi’s wild visuals and idiosyncratic style.

The result? Perhaps the most eccentric score to come out of the MCU thus far.

Packed with 80s influences and hip electronic beats — yes, I said hip — Thor: Ragnarok provided Waititi’s unusual blockbuster with an extra dose of quirk and remains a decidedly unconventional big budget action score far removed from the likes of Silvestri, Giacchino and even, despite its fundamentally electronic design, Hans Zimmer. In truth, the results are comparable to a late 80s or early 90s video game soundtrack, although Mothersbaugh still brings the heat in terms of crafting a truly epic sound thanks to his use of choir, keyboards, a massive 100-piece orchestra and overabundance of Taiko drums. You could say Thor: Ragnarok is unconventionally conventional.

“The intention was never to destroy something that’s already there that’s great and that there’s a fan base for,” Waititi told Entertainment Weekly back in 2017. “It was only to give them something new that was not offensive and was something that they would feel elevated the things and characters that they love. So that was our goal. Our goal was never to deconstruct things. It was more to expand.”

MARK MOTHERSBAUGH

Originally, Waititi wanted Queen to handle the soundtrack to further push the Flash Gordon influence of the film but ultimately decided against the idea and turned to Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh.

Mothersbaugh started out in the art-punk band Devo, but turned his attention to TV shows, video games, commercials and films in the 90s and quickly gained prominence due to his work on Pee-wee’s Playhouse, the Nickelodeon cartoon Rugrats, House of Lies, films such as Happy Gilmore, Dead Man On Campus and Drop Dead Gorgeous, as well as Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou — as perfect a match between director and composer as you’ll ever find.

More recently, Mothersbaugh has teamed up with Phillip Lord and Christopher Miller on their productions of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and its sequel, 22 Jump Street, and The Lego Movie and demonstrated a flair for crafting eclectic scores bursting with energy and unusual instrumentation.

In other words, his unique abilities were well suited for Waititi’s unconventional style.

REVENGE OF THE SYNTH

For Thor: Ragnarok, a film described by Waititi as a 70s/80s sci-fi fantasy, Mothersbaugh opted to lean on old school aesthetics: synthesizers. No, really. A lot of synthesizers.

Entire tracks are rendered via synthesizer, namely “The Revolution Has Begun” and “What Heroes Do,” among others, while “Arena Battle” and “Asgard is a People” cleverly blend synths with traditional orchestra to great effect almost to the point where the musical designs sound as if they are in direct contention with each other; a facet that impeccably highlights Thor’s struggles to adapt to the strange planet Sakaar.

Mothersbaugh used circuit bent instruments and wind modulation to achieve a primitive gamelan sound via synthesizers to ultimately achieve a sound that was, as he described it, “future primitive.”

“…Taika (Waititi) and I are both fans of early synth things,” Mothersbaugh told The Conway Daily Sun. “In the process of listening to different music that Taika was interested in, as something to help become an avid influence to the Marvel sound, I went down to the basement here at my studio and I have an archive of all the old stuff. I was the one who was in charge of that in Devo — of keeping everything for the future. So, I had all these synthesizers from the ’70s and ’80s, and we went down and pulled some out and used them. My intention was to come up with a future primitive sound to augment that big Marvel sound that we are familiar with — the 100-piece orchestra, 35-piece choir that I used for the film. I wanted to augment that with these kind of retro synths, so if it sounds like Devo, that’s how it happened.”

This approach suits the film well. And while there are any number of cues featuring what one might call “standard superhero music,” Mothersbaugh’s techno rhythms and keyboards keep the music from veering too far into conventional territory.

THOR’S JOURNEY

Mothersbaugh’s score works so well in the film because the composer actually takes the time to tell a story with his music. So much so that the music becomes a supporting character.

Early on, when Thor travels to Asgard, the music is largely orchestral in nature. Once Thor lands on Sakaar, the music leans towards the aforementioned synthesizers and primitive future beats. Thor’s heroic actions are scored in a traditional orchestrated manner (with underlying synth), while his more comedic antics around Sakaar lend themselves to Mothersbaugh’s electronic rhythms. It’s an interesting dynamic that, appropriately enough, reverts back to Patrick Doyle’s Thor theme at film’s end once the God of Thunder settles on his new role as the ruler of Asgard. Perfection.

Plus, throw in Led Zepplin’s The Immigrant during the opening and closing action sequences and you have yourself a unique soundtrack that perfectly captures the spirit of Taika Waititi’s terrific film. In the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mothersbaugh’s work truly stands out as one of the better musical efforts in a sea full of bland retreads.

Tye Sheridan in talks for George Clooney’s The Tender Bar

Two months after the Oscar-winning filmmaker began negotiations with Ben Affleck to lead the adaptation, X-Men alum Tye Sheridan has also entered talks to join the cast of George Clooney’s next directorial effort The Tender Bar, according to Collider.

Based on the J.R. Moehringer memoir of the same name, the story centers on an eight-year-old boy growing up in Long Island who seeks out his father at a local bar, only to instead build bonds with patrons at the bar that he looks up to as father figures and tries to find a way to move forward in his life and accept the love of his single mother.

The script for the film is written by William Monahan, best-known for his Oscar-winning work on the Martin Scorsese-helmed ensemble crime thriller The Departed, as well as Body of Lies and Edge of Darkness. The film adaptation was originally set at Sony with Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures) attached to direct, but after he departed the project the studio put it into turnaround with Amazon acquiring the rights shortly after.

Clooney was set to follow up Midnight Sky, in which he starred and produced, with MGM’s adaptation of Boys in the Boat, but sources report that with the complexity of shooting the Olympics sports drama in the midst of a pandemic, he has chosen Tender Bar as his next project though is still attached to Boys. It’s currently unclear if Clooney will also star in Tender Bar, but given his appearance in all but one of the films he’s directed in the past 18 years, be it supporting or leading role, chances are high he’ll find a role to take on.

Blumhouse’s Firestarter remake casts Michael Greyeyes as Rainbird

A few months after landing Zac Efron (Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile) to lead the cast, Blumhouse’s upcoming remake of the 1984 adaptation of Stephen King’s Firestarter has continued to expand its cast with the addition of Michael Greyeyes (Fear the Walking Dead), according to Deadline.

Firestarter centers on an organization called the Department of Scientific Intelligence, aka “The Shop.” Two participants in their mysterious research program end up getting married and having a child. Their offspring, Charlie McGee, inherited pyrokinetic powers from her parents, who were given a low-grade hallucinogen called “Lot Six” during their college years. Now the government is trying to apprehend the young Charlie in order to harness her powerful and unique skills as a weapon.

Greyeyes, who recently received rave reviews for his role in the Sundance premiere Wild Indian, is set to star in the film as Rainbird, a relentless and powerful man who has been pushed into a violent life. The character was previously portrayed by George C. Scott in the first adaptation of the novel.

Drew Barrymore previously played Charlie in Mark L. Lester’s 1984 adaptation that also starred David Keith as Charlie’s father Andy. Written by Stanley Mann, the movie earned $17.1 million at the box office from a $12 million budget. A TV miniseries titled Firestarter: Rekindled followed in 2002 starring Marguerite Moreau, Malcolm McDowell, and Dennis Hopper.

After originally setting In the Fade‘s Fatih Akin for the job, Blumhouse partnered with up-and-comer Keith Thomas (The Vigil) late last year to direct the new adaptation while Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) is penning the script.
