Last May, it was announced that Sony Pictures’ war drama Greyhound would officially be foregoing its previously planned theatrical release and instead opted for a digital premiere on Apple TV+. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Oscar winner Tom Hanks addressed his film’s move to streaming by expressing his grief over it because he had been working on the project for nearly a decade.
“An absolute heartbreak,” Hanks said. “I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality.”

Based on C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd, the film will be set in the early days of WWII. In Greyhound, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous waters of the Black Pit in the North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy in order to give the allies a chance to win the war. The film is directed by Aaron Schneider.
The film stars Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Cast Away), Stephen Graham (Snatch, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Rocketman), Rob Morgan (Mudbound, Stranger Things, Daredevil), and Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas, The Boys, Death Wish).

The official trailer for Vertigo Releasing’s forthcoming supernatural horror film titled The Vigil has been released, featuring Yakov as he gets enlisted for an overnight shomer which is a Jewish tradition where someone watches the body of a recently deceased community member. Last year, Blumhouse acquired the North American distribution rights for the film but the studio hasn’t yet announced a release date. However, The Vigil is scheduled to be released in UK theaters next week on July 17. Check out the video in the player below!

The Vigil is written and directed by Keith Thomas. It stars Dave Davis (The Walking Dead) as Yakov, Menashe Lustig (Menashe) as Reb Shulem, Malky Goldman (Unorthodox) as Sarah, Lynn Cohen (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as Mrs. Litvak, and Fred Melamed.
The film had its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness. Its official synopsis described by TIFF reads: “Set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn’s Hassidic “Boro” Park neighborhood, The Vigil follows Yakov, a former Hassid, as he accepts a position as a shomer, hired to “sit the vigil” and watch over the body of a deceased community member. Having lost his faith, Yakov isn’t eager to go back to the insular religious community he only recently fled. But when Reb Shulem, a rabbi and confidante, approaches Yakov after a support group meeting and offers to pay Yakov to be the shomer for a recently deceased Holocaust survivor, he reluctantly accepts the job. Shortly after arriving at the dilapidated house, Yakov realizes that something is very, very wrong. This will not be a quiet vigil.”

How do you write about a legend? Ennio Morricone was one of the most influential film composers of all time. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, The Mission, The Thing, The Untouchables, Days of Heaven — Masterpieces, all of them. Each crafted with a unique style, sound, and beauty, unlike any other soundtrack. Such scores defined my youth.
Sadly, Morricone passed away on Monday in Rome at age 91. His legend will continue thanks to his masterworks, which inspired the likes of Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, and James Horner and continue to inspire composers to this day. Morricone’s contributions to the world of film music are astonishing. If you need proof, here are some of my favorite tracks from his vast body of work. Feel free to post yours in the comments!
Perhaps the greatest and most recognizable western score of all time, Morricone’s work on Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly challenged the traditional sound of the Hollywood cowboy pic thanks to its exceptional mix of vocals, guitar, flutes, drums, whistling, gunfire sound effects, and ocarina. A true classic.
Purchase The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Original Soundtrack)
Morricone utilized five different themes for his stunning work on Brian De Palma’s violent 1987 crime drama The Untouchables. The first, a more traditional, even adventurous action theme that defines Elliot Ness and his crew; the second, a menacing series of electronic beats accompanied by an eerie harmonica that permeates Al Capone and his crew (the harmonica sound always freaked me out as a kid, mainly because I associate with the scene in which Sean Connery’s character gets blown away in gruesome fashion); a third, much cozier theme plays over sequences of Ness with his family; the “Death Theme” is appropriately downbeat and plays over the numerous tragic moments in which our heroes are gunned down; and finally, the extravagant Al Capone theme. Each carries its own distinct style and work astonishingly well in the classic film.
Purchase The Untouchables (1987 Film) Soundtrack Edition (1990) Audio CD
My favorite of Morricone’s scores, The Mission has so many beautiful themes and is such a magnificently constructed work of pure emotion and heart that it quite literally overwhelms the soul. I imagine this is the music playing in the hereafter to greet Morricone at this very moment. (Side note: Listen to this score while reading The Lord of the Flies. It will change your life.)
Purchase The Mission: Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture
The brilliance of Morricone’s score for The Thing lies in its minimalist approach. A majority of the score comprises of rhythmic beats and synthesizers; and yet, it works surprisingly well in the finished product and remains one of the better horror scores of all time.
Purchase The Thing (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
I grew up watching this gritty western comedy starring Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine and as a result harbor a deep love of Morricone’s score. Listen to the main theme and tell me that isn’t the most random, wild, but ultimately badass intro for any film!
Purchase Two Mules for Sister Sara / Days of Heaven
Finally, here are a couple of Morricone-inspired cues from other composer’s works just so you can get an idea of how influential the composer truly was.

In a new interview with Empire, director Edgar Wright teased new details about Focus Features’ forthcoming horror film Last Night in Soho, describing it as something very different from his previous films. The outlet also provided the first brief description of Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy’s mysterious characters in the film, who are set as a fashion designer and an aspiring singer, respectively.
“It will feel very different to my other films,” Wright said. “But I’ve always liked films which have a slow burn into something else, and a lot of my movies have that feeling. Last Night starts in a more psychological realm and then starts to get increasingly intense as it goes along. And I always like to gravitate towards making a film in genres I miss, and there’s a certain type of psychological horror film that you got more in the ‘60s and ‘70s, that have something of an operatic nature. I’m using that kind of visual grammar.”

From Focus Features and Working Title Films, Last Night in Soho will star Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (Leave No Trace) as Eloise, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Glass), and Emmy Award-nominated actor Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who).
Plot details are light on the movie, but Wright calls it a psychological horror-thriller in the vein of Don’t Look Now and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion. Wright co-wrote the script for the film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Penny Dreadful). The film will take place in London’s Soho district.
“I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years,” Wright told Empire about the movie. “With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead, you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.”

Nira Park, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Wright will produce. Focus Features and Film4 will co-finance the film. Focus Features and Universal Pictures International will distribute the film worldwide.
Originally scheduled for release on September 25, 2020, the film will now launch in theaters on Friday, April 23, 2021, domestically in North America.

Nearly two weeks after signing the Atomic Blonde director to helm the action-thriller for Sony Pictures, David Leitch’s Bullet Train has found its star in the form of two-time Oscar winner Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), according to Variety.
RELATED: Bullet Train: Director David Leitch to Helm Action Thriller for Sony
Bullet Train will mark the eighth collaboration between the 50-year-old filmmaker and 56-year-old actor, who first worked together in 1999 on Fight Club on which Leitch worked as an uncredited stunt double for Pitt, followed by 2001’s The Mexican, Ocean’s Eleven and Spy Game, the latter two in which he doubled again for Pitt and helped coordinate the martial arts stunts on the Tony Scott-helmed film. Leitch would once again double for Pitt in 2004’s Troy and 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith and would later reunite with the star in 2018’s Deadpool 2, in which Pitt cameoed as Vanisher and Leitch directed.
On top of directing, Leitch will supervise the script written by Zak Olkewicz (Fear Street). Plot details for the film are currently being kept under wraps, but it is based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Isaka Kotaro.
Leitch and Kelly McCormick will produce the project via their company 87North along with Antoine Fuqua (The Magnificent Seven, Training Day, The Equalizer) and Kat Samick (The Equalizer, Southpaw, Infinite). Brittany Morrissey is the executive overseeing the film for Sony Pictures.

Leitch and McCormick recently signed a first-look deal at Universal and produced the action film Nobody, starring Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk, which is expected to release in February 2021. The past few months have seen some exciting new developments in the Mad Max franchise as writer/director George Miller revealed he has a film focused on Imperator Furiosa in the works, but it being a prequel means the lack of Charlize Theron reprising her role and in a new interview, the Oscar winner has opened up about the project.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for Netflix’s The Old Guard, Theron revealed that she is disappointed by the fact the new film will see her recast with an actress in her 20s for the younger iteration of the character, calling it “a tough one to swallow.”
“Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making that film with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best, “ Theron said. “Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on.”
Talks began swirling in late March that executives and filmmakers began taking video and phone meetings in hopes of greenlighting new projects over the next 12 months including Miller, who has begun eyeing a number of actresses to take on a younger iteration of Theron’s character, with the previous word being he was looking to cast The New Mutants‘ Anya Taylor-Joy.
Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened in May of 2015, is the story of Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises). Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. A Mad Max prequel might show us her life in The Green Place before she started working for Immortan Joe.
