In a recent interview with Variety, Marvel star Tessa Thompson revealed that the upcoming slate of Marvel films, aka Phase 4, will bring in a much more diverse ensemble.
RELATED: Anthony Mackie Says The Falcon & The Winter Soldier is Like a Six-Hour Movie
“I think in this next phase of Marvel, we’re really talking about what representation looks like in those spaces,” Thompson stated. “Because the truth is these movies travel globally in such huge ways, and if you can represent people that are of color, if you can represent people with disabilities, if you can represent the LGBTQIA community inside of these films, it’s a pretty big deal.”
“There’s millions and millions of people, particularly young people, that show up to the cinema. And I think if you can show them something that looks like them, they feel valued. Particularly inside of these narratives of the comic books, that’s what it’s all about. It’s that our differences make us special.”
Thompson’s Thor: Love & Thunder character, Valkyrie, will be portrayed as an openly gay woman in the upcoming film, while others Marvel flicks, such as Eternals, will feature openly gay characters.
“I’m really excited that we’re able to continue to push the bounds of that and that I’m able to do that with Valkyrie, because there’s so many cool queer characters in the comic books and they should have a place on-screen.”

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will reunite with director Taika Waititi for the upcoming sequel. Natalie Portman will also return to the MCU in Love and Thunder for the first time since Thor: The Dark World. Additionally, Christian Bale will portray the film’s villain.

Over the weekend, Zack Snyder responded to several questions on Vero in regard to the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and dropped several interesting tidbits. You can check out the full posts below, but we’ll break them down here as well.
What Snyder revealed about Justice League in his posts (per DR Movie News on Twitter):
1. The original Steppenwolf design will return
2. He is already deep in VFX work on the film
3. The upcoming release of Justice League will be 100% his vision with absolutely no compromises
4. We will likely get a new teaser before the upcoming DC FanDome on August 22
5. Junkie XL will return to score the film
6. Justice League will include more Knightmare sequences with Darkseid and Superman
7. Kevin Costner will likely return as Jonathon Kent for a brief cameo
RELATED: Jon Berg Responds to Ray Fisher’s Justice League Accusations
The most interesting of all of this information is the bit about compromise. After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to match Marvel’s The Avengers in terms of box office revenue, Warner Bros. insisted that Snyder lighten the tone of Justice League. As such, Snyder made compromises in order to appease studio heads. So, even if Snyder had released his film in 2017, it likely still would not have been his intended vision.
Now, with the freedom given to him by HBO Max, Snyder has full reign to release the Justice League he wanted to release all along. Whether it paves the way for future sequels and includes the darker bits he has teased about for years, or merely serves as a conclusion to a 3-part story remains anyone’s guess.
Snyder also replied to a lot of questions with winky emojis. He’s obviously teasing fans, or maybe there will indeed be a Green Lantern appearance; and a sequence of Superman destroying the world under Darkseid’s authority.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. No new footage will be shot, however.
Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Miller as The Flash, Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

Created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, Zatanna Zatara made her first appearance in the Hawkman comic books in November 1964. She is the daughter of a famous stage magician named Giovanni Zatara, who have debuted during the Golden Age of Comics. Even though she hasn’t yet made her live-action film debut, she had first made her live-action appearance in popular DC series Smallville and was portrayed by Serinda Swan. However, DC fans got more familiar with her through her appearances in various animated series such as Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited, and Young Justice as well as in most recent TV shows DC Super Hero Girls and Harley Quinn.
If the solo Zatanna movie would later be confirmed by Warner Bros., it would officially become a part of the studio’s growing list of ongoing live-action projects including James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Andy Muschietti’s The Flash, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and more.

Following in the footsteps of James Cameron and his Avatar sequels, New Zealand is seeing a number of other international productions coming to its land including Netflix’s live-action Cowboy Bebop adaptation, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series and three others, according to Deadline.

In looking to jumpstart filming halted by quarantine in many parts of the world, multiple studios are looking to take advantage of New Zealand’s near-eradication of COVID-19 and move their productions to the Kiwi island. In addition to the Amazon adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel franchise and Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the classic anime, New Zealand will also greet the arrivals of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, Peter Farrelly’s Greatest Beer Run Ever starring Viggo Mortensen, and Power Rangers Beast Morphers.
The latest moves will see a total 206 of foreign-based cast and crew in the country, along with 35 family members, over the next six months after being granted the border exemptions from the country’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, as well as 10 more crew members of Avatar joining the 31 already there.
“Our success at managing COVID-19 gives our country an opportunity to become one of the few countries still able to safely produce screen content,” Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford said at Parliament on Wednesday. “And the inquiries and interest we are getting from international production houses tells me that the international film community sees New Zealand as something of a global safe haven.”
The Lord of the Rings had already entered pre-production and early shooting prior to the global quarantine order, coming close to wrapping work on the first two episodes in mid-March before being shut down, though it now fits into their original plan of going on hiatus after the second episode and resuming in September.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop had been in production last year before going on a 7-9 month hiatus after star John Cho (Searching) suffered a knee injury onset in October. Though sources report that no resume date has been set for shooting in New Zealand, the studios are looking to continue some time in the next couple of months. MBIE estimates that with the new productions coming to the country and cleared to film, it should create 3,000 local jobs for Kiwis and bring $400 million to the New Zealand economy.

According to DCEU Mythic, Warner Bros. Picture is reportedly in the process of developing a new live-action DC film which is rumored to be centered around magic-wielding superhero Zatanna Zatara. Despite being one of the main characters in the popular animated film Justice League Dark, the outlet notes that this movie is separate from Bad Robot’s previously announced project about the team. If this new project would be proven true, this will mark Zatanna’s live-action DCEU film debut and first-ever solo outing.

7.5/10
Matthew Solomon as DropTheMike
John Savage as Wallace Fleischer
Sam Valentine as Danni
Tim Drier as Chris
Kelsey Griswold as Jess
Christopher Martin as Security Guard
Directed by Antoine Le; Written by Todd Klick
It’s been a few years since the found-footage horror genre last saw a quality effort in Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch rebootquel, with the whole subgenre effectively being replaced by the Screenlife format the Unfriended franchise made popular. This new genre is still a thrill and had yet to find a way to merge the two formats until now with Antoine Le’s Followed, which proves to be a thrilling and chilling, if a bit familiar, affair with some decent social commentary.
When aspiring social media influencer “DropTheMike” is offered a lucrative sponsorship to grow his channel, he’s joined by his video crew on a visit to one of the most haunted hotels in America, where he’ll give his audience a horrific night of thrill-seeking the likes of which they have never seen before. What begins as a fun investigative challenge including the infamous Elevator Ritual quickly descends into a personal hell of true evil, begging the timely question: how far would you go to pursue internet fame?
The concept of a group of fame-hungry young adults with cameras entering a truly haunted area is certainly nothing new, going all the way back to the first Blair Witch film and even being revitalized briefly with the expert Grave Encounters, a spoof on a number of ghost-hunting reality series on the air at the time of the film’s release, but much like the Vicious Brothers’ haunting effort, Followed finds a media craze and targets it mostly effectively: social media influencers.
Nowadays, too many people are willing to throw their lives on the line and their morals to the wind in an effort to go viral on social media platforms and they’ve been targeted for critique in numerous films and series over the years, but there’s something about this film’s attempts that feels a little more authentic than past efforts. From the story’s stylings as daily vlogs in DropTheMike’s investigation full of kitschy on-screen graphics and editing to the characters’ avoidance of crystal-clear warnings from informed people, this feels more elevated than a typical “teens don’t listen to scary story” because this is something we see all the time on the internet, namely with certain Swedish and American YouTubers who will do anything to appease their fans, even if it infuriates the rest of the world.
That being said, this nice bit of social commentary is unfortunately where most of its story’s originality points come to a halt, as the rest of the film’s proceedings feel all-too-familiar to the films mentioned in previous paragraphs and also becomes a bit too convoluted by the final moments of the film. Recreating rituals despite being advised against doing so and blindly following the group leader until tragedy strikes, the film follows its haunted house investigation formula to the tee that results in plenty of fun scares but does result in feelings of predictability.
The scares themselves are mostly effective, expertly utilizing the handheld cameras and computer screens to help build the tension in every scene while also leaving enough of the sights themselves to the audiences’ imaginations to create as much of a psychological terror as a jump scare-fest. Many of the visuals, both practical and computer-generated, prove to be rather chilling and a nice homage to classics of horror past, including the demonic head shake made famous by Jacob’s Ladder, which arrives in one of the most unsettling moments in the film.
The performances in the film are relatively strong and believable that helps keep the film feeling grounded, namely Matthew Solomon as DropTheMike. Every leader of a group of paranormal investigators has to have a good balance of likability and nastiness for the audience to want to root against them, and though he leans more into the latter than the former, Solomon brings his vlogger to life in solid fashion that makes him a compelling enough lead to help drive the story.
Followed may not be the most original affair in its respective genres, and it may be a little surface level with its exploration of the homelessness issues in Los Angeles, but thanks to a unique blend of the Screenlife and found footage formats, a nice critique of the dangers of social media and some effective scares, it proves to be a plenty fun outing.

ComingSoon.net got the opportunity to chat with horror icon Tobin Bell (Saw franchise) to discuss his role in the possession pic Belzebuth, which is coming to shelves on Blu-ray and DVD from Shudder on July 7 and can be pre-ordered here!
In looking back at getting the offer to do the film and choosing to sign on, Bell cited co-writer/director Emilio Portes as the biggest draw for wanting to be a part of the project, crediting the Mexican filmmaker’s “very strong visual sense” and his “clear ideas” about the film and Bell’s character.
“He showed me storyboards about how he planned to shoot the film and the idea of being in Mexico City for nearly three weeks was fascinating to me as I hadn’t spent any time there,” Bell explained. “When you have an opportunity to do that, that’s enriching and the marriage of demonology with conventional Catholic religion was fascinating to me. Having been raised a Catholic, I was drawn to explore that, so Emilio’s enthusiasm was what got me going.”
The 77-year-old star described the opportunity of getting to work in Mexico City as “amazing” and describing the area as having “a rich history of filmmaking” that he’s been eager to explore in his 40-plus year career, also expressing excitement of getting to film at an iconic location.
“Mexican filmmaking has been going on since the 1930s and there’s a very strong commitment to high-quality filmmaking in that country and when you travel to foreign countries, you end up learning a lot about how artists the work there and the kind of craftsmanship,” Bell described. “I’ve had that kind of experience in Mexico and the Czech Republic, the quality of the artists there from makeup to scenic designers to carpenters was amazing and being at the Churubusco Studios, which is a historic stage in Mexico City. I was very touched and proud to have worked at Churubusco.”
Though well-known to general audiences as the mastermind behind the events of the Leigh Whannell and James Wan-created Saw franchise, Jigsaw, Belzebuth sees Bell take on a much more protagonist role and though it’s different than what he’s brought before, he found there wasn’t much of a change in his own development of his character.
“I always try to bring something positive to what I play,” Bell explained. “Bad guys don’t really look at themselves as bad, there’s always some kind of justification for their behavior, so I was trying to find those justifications and sometimes they’re stronger than others. I’m always looking for the opposite direction from what’s on the page, what’s on the page will reveal itself because it will play out in the movie, whatever the character does is whatever the character does and you will see that as a viewer. But what an actor can bring is what’s not on the page and what’s going on inside the character, what motivates him to do what he does and in this case, he’s a pretty potent guy. He finds that his job, there are these evil forces that are looking for this child so he gets into bed, shall we say, with these evil forces so that they are convinced that he is one of them. As you can see from his look in it, with the tattoos that he does it quite convincingly and with a huge commitment and I won’t say whether he’s successful or not, when people see the film they’ll find out.”
One of the biggest elements of the film that Bell found to be fascinating and a big draw to be a part of the production was its exploration of demonology, which he describes as “the occupation of the innocent” and discussing his own dive into the concept.
“Half the time in demonology it’s possession, the person that you see in front of you is not the person that you are seeing, but an occupying spirit in that person,” Bell noted. “That’s one of the things that’s so different in this film and I love that, I love anything that has to do with spirituality and belief on certain levels and shamanism and things of that sort, and it’s ancient, it’s not like something we’ve discovered in the 2020s, it’s ancient. I think in some ways, there’s something about the timing of this release is really fascinating, given what’s going on out there in terms of this pandemic going on and the kind of evil force that’s surrounded us all, it’s kind of chilling in a way.”
Though the film premiered on AMC’s horror-tinged streaming service last summer, Tuesday marks the first time the film is getting a proper home media release in the US and when Bell first heard word that Shudder had acquired the film for streaming and physical release, he recalled he found it to be “great,” especially as much of audience’s watching habits today are “about streaming.”
“Now, everyone’s at home, so I think that a lot more people have the opportunity of having time on their hands and have the opportunity to take a look at something new, so I think it’s very wise of Shudder to do that and to open up the conventional horror market to the sort of relatively new look at Emilio Portes’ approach to this genre,” Bell warmly opined. “He’s got some pretty good credentials in other genres, but I think this is one of his first ventures into this genre and he’s very committed to horror, so I think he did a marvelous job.”
RELATED: CS Video: You Should Have Left Interview with Kevin Bacon & Amanda Seyfried
I think it’s great because everything has come to some extent about streaming Belzebuth, Special Agent Emanuel Ritter leads a police investigation into a series of shocking deaths. But after a priest from the Vatican finds a link between the murders and an ancient demon, a descent into horror ensues.
Portes directs a script he co-wrote with Luis Carlos Fuentes and a cast that includes Bell, Joaquín Cosio (Narcos: Mexico, The Lone Ranger) and Tate Ellington (Sinister 2). The film is available to stream on Shudder now and is set to hit shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on July 7!
