The Trial of the Chicago 7 first-look photos preview Aaron Sorkin’s timely drama

The first official photos for Oscar-winning filmmaker Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming timely drama film The Trial of the Chicago 7 have been released. The photos provide us with our first-look at the star-studded cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Jeremy Strong as they portray the seven activists who took a stand against the Vietnam War. Based on a true story, The Trial of the Chicago 7  follows protesters who disrupted the 1968 Democrat party convention with an anti-Vietnam war “carnival” that turned nasty. Demonstrators threw bricks, police responded with tear gas and the center of Chicago was engulfed in flames. Curfews only escalated the violence.

After the clashes, independent investigators blamed eight police officers and eight protesters including Abbie Hoffman, who had already disrupted the New York Stock Exchange with showers of fake money. The police were not charged but the protesters were accused of inciting a riot. One was jailed for contempt, leaving the seven to fight the charges.

Sorkin’s second directorial effort will feature Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald) as Tom Hayden, Oscar-nominee Sacha Baron Cohen (Who is America?) as Abbie Hoffman, Jeremy Strong (Succession) as as Jerry Rubin, Golden Globe-nominee Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Snowden) as Richard Schultz, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) as Bobby Seale, Alex Sharp (The Hustle) as Rennie Davis and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Luce, Waves) as Fred Hamptom. It will also star Michael Keaton, William Hurt, Thomas Middleditch, John Carroll Lynch, Daniel Flaherty, Noah Robbins, Mark Rylance, J.C. MacKenzie and Max Adler, who also serves as an executive producer.

The film will also be executive produced by Matt Jackson. Marc Butan and Anthony Katagas. The Trial of the Chicago 7 will be produced by Oscar nominee Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, La La Land), Stuart Besser, and Tyler Thompson.

Secret M. Night Shyamalan movie adds Gael García Bernal

We may still be in the dark on what M. Night Shyamalan (Glass)’s next film is even about but it’s clearly attracting a glorious cast as Golden Globe winner Gael García Bernal (The Kindergarten Teacher) has signed on to the ensemble roster, according to Deadline.

The Mozart in the Jungle alum joins a cast that already includes Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), Thomasin McKenzie (True History of the Kelly Gang), Aaron Pierce (Krypton), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Abbey Lee (Lovecraft Country, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Tower), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Avenue 5, Gold Digger, Jupiter Ascending), and Ken Leung (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Inhumans, The Blacklist).

The project is written, directed, and produced by two-time Oscar nominee Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable).

Shyamalan’s high-concept content has consistently captured the attention of audiences around the world for nearly two decades, having amassed more than $3.3 billion worldwide. His most recent Universal project, Glass, the culmination of his Eastrail 177 Trilogy, garnered nearly $250 million worldwide and opened No. 1 at the box office, remaining in the top spot for three weeks. Split, the second film in the epic series, also debuted at No. 1 and remained there for three weeks in a row during its 2017 release, while 2015’s The Visit brought in close to $100 million at the worldwide box office and was one of the highest-grossing horror films of the year. Having independently financed the three films with a combined production budget of $35 million, Glass, Split and The Visit went on to cumulatively gross more than $600 million worldwide. He will similarly finance his next two films.

The untitled thriller is currently slated to hit theaters on July 23, 2021.
