Peter Farrelly’s Greatest Beer Run Ever adds Dylan O’Brien

After last month brought word that Oscar winner Peter Farrelly and Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) would be reuniting for the director’s latest film, Variety is reporting that Dylan O’Brien (Maze Runner) is in talks to join the cast for The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

Word of O’Brien’s potential casting comes on the heels of Farrelly’s announcement that New Zealand had granted a border exemption to the production to begin shooting in the coming months, amongst welcoming other productions.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever adaptation will serve as Farrelly’s next project after his feature Green Book won two Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The novel, set to be published this November and written by Joanna Molloy and John “Chickie Donohue, is a dramedy based on the true tale of Donohue, who in 1967 left New York to track down and share a few beers with his childhood buddies in the Army… while they were fighting in Vietnam.

Farrelly is set to co-write the screenplay alongside Green Book co-scribe Brian Currie and Pete Jones, who the two-time Oscar winner previously worked with on the 2011 modestly successful Hall Pass, which Jones received a story and co-writer credit alongside both Farrelly brothers and Kevin Barnett.

Pre-order your copy of the novel here!

The official book synopsis reads: In 1967, John (Chick) Donohue was a 26-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran working as a merchant seaman when he was challenged one night in a New York City bar. The men gathered at this hearth had lost family and friends in the ongoing war in Vietnam. Now, they were seeing protesters turn on the troops. One neighborhood patriot proposed an idea many might deem preposterous: One of them should sneak into Vietnam, track down their buddies in combat, and give each of them messages of support from back home, maybe some laughs — and beer.

Chick volunteered for the mission. He sailed to Vietnam on a cargo ship carrying a backpack full of American beer, landing in Qui Nho’n in 1968. Things went awry when Chick got caught in the Tet Offensive, starting in the early hours as an eyewitness to the battle to retake the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, where he became stuck for months.

Chick Donohue later became legendary as “the sandhog who went to Harvard.” He worked for decades on behalf of New York’s tunnel builders as the legislative and political director of Sandhogs Local 147.

This is the story of his epic beer run to Vietnam, in his own words and in those of the men he found in the war zone.

GKIDS acquires Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch

GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, has announced that it has acquired the North American distribution rights for legendary animation house Studio Ghibli’s latest feature Earwig and the Witch (alternatively titled Aya and the Witch)!

RELATED: Aya and the Witch Photos Preview Studio Ghibli’s First CG Film

Directed by Goro Miyazaki (From Up on Poppy Hill), son of Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro), who’s also credited with planning the project, the film marks Studio Ghibli’s first entirely 3D CG-animated feature and is an official selection for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It’s slated to debut on NHK in Japan this winter followed by a theatrical release in North America in early 2021!

“Nowadays, in our country, there are many adults and few children. It must be tough for these children, so few of them having to deal with so many adults,” Goro Miyazaki said in a previous statement. “It was while I was thinking about this that I got to know Earwig. And I realized, ‘That’s it!’ How does Earwig deal with the annoying adults? Please watch Earwig and The Witch to find out. She may be cheeky, but I sincerely hope that our adorable Earwig will encourage children and cheer up adults.”

Earwig and the Witch is based on the 2011 children’s novel of the same name which was written by the late British author Diana Wynne Jones, who also wrote the source novel for Studio Ghibli’s popular fantasy film Howl’s Moving Castle. The novel follows the story of a smart orphan girl named Earwig as she gets adopted by a woman named Bella Yaga, who turns out to be a cruel witch that takes her to live in a haunted house.

Pick up a copy of the book here!

The novel’s official synopsis reads: “In this enchanting introduction to Diana Wynne Jones’s magical and funny work, Earwig is a fearless young orphan. When she finds herself in a house of dark magic, she does whatever she can to adapt—especially if it means that she’ll learn a little magic herself! A young middle grade novel by World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement‒winner Diana Wynne Jones, beautifully illustrated in black and white by Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky.

Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald’s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it’s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald’s, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that . . . but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who’s boss.”

Tom Hanks clarifies Greyhound Apple TV+ comments

After initially expressing heartbreak over his World War II action-thriller skipping a theatrical release in favor of Apple TV+, screenwriter and star Tom Hanks has clarified his statements to the Today Show regarding Greyhound‘s move to a streaming platform in a time when many theaters are still closed across the country. The full interview can be viewed in the player below!

RELATED: Greyhound: Tom Hanks Heartbroken Over Film’s Apple TV+ Release

“Well, I’m actually thrilled that Apple TV is making it possible for everybody to see it,” Hanks said. “Not only worldwide, as long as you have Apple Television, but also the day after my 64th birthday, thank you, thank you very much. This is a magnificent gift that’s come to us because of Apple. Because COVID-19 did something heartbreaking to us all. It closed down the theaters. We don’t have the cinema. There isn’t anybody that doesn’t like going to see a good movie with 800 other people and coming out with something in common. Barring that, Apple Television has saved the day for us. We had a magnificent movie that was not going to be seen because of the realities. It is going to be viewable, and otherwise we would’ve languished in a vault for a movie that, look, is 88 minutes of a thematic story that does speak to what we’re all going through right now. We didn’t know that at the time we made the film, we were just trying to make a lean, new spare version about procedures and behaviors about how difficult it was to stay alive in the North Atlantic in 1942.”

Based on C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd, the film will be set in the early days of WWII. In Greyhound, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous waters of the Black Pit in the North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy in order to give the allies a chance to win the war. The film is directed by Aaron Schneider.

The film stars Tom Hanks (Saving Private RyanA Beautiful Day in the NeighborhoodCast Away), Stephen Graham (SnatchTinker Tailor Soldier SpyRocketman), Rob Morgan (MudboundStranger ThingsDaredevil), and Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las VegasThe BoysDeath Wish).

Janelle Monáe reveals dream Marvel role

With Fox’s X-Men film series essentially at an end and the rights heading to Marvel Studios, many fans and stars are expressing interest in their dream comic book roles and Grammy nominee Janelle Monáe has revealed she has her eye on playing the part of iconic superheroine Storm.

RELATED: Ryan Reynolds Says He’s Working on Deadpool 3 For Marvel Studios

In an interview with Empire Magazine, the 34-year-old singer-songwriter and actress discussed working on her latest album in Atlanta at the same time as Ryan Coogler and cast filming the critical and commercial darling Black Panther and that in hanging out with the stars and co-writer/director, she’s definitely had conversations with him as to possibly joining the MCU.

One of my dreams has always been to play Storm,” Monáe said. “I don’t know if she comes in Black Panther, but it would be a dream to have her in it. I don’t know where they are with that. A lot of women have played Storm and they’ve done an exceptional job, and I would love to be in that line of artists and get to do Storm justice.

In the comics, Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, was a major romantic link to King T’Challa, even marrying him at some point, whilst Nakia, who was played in the film by Lupita Nyong’o, eventually became a villain for the titular hero. However, with Coogler choosing to depict Nakia in a much more heroic light and major departure from her comics, chances are that should Storm be introduced in the upcoming Black Panther sequel, it’s unlikely she’d be a romantic interest to the African hero.

RELATED: X-Men Cast Reunion Crashed by Origins Star Ryan Reynolds

After nearly a decade of living on the small screen in various animated series, Storm finally made her live-action debut on the big screen with 2000’s X-Men, seeing Oscar winner Halle Berry in the role for the first three installments and 2014’s Days of Future Past, the fourth “present day” installment and second prequel film. The role would then pass on to Alexandra Shipp in 2016’s Apocalypse, with the 28-year-old star reprising the character in last year’s derided Dark Phoenix, which was essentially the final installment in Fox’s X-Men franchise.

Now that the rights to the mutant team lie in Marvel’s hands, it’s currently unclear how soon mutants will be introduced to the MCU, with Kevin Feige having announced at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con that a film focused on them was in development, but not specifying a timeline for when they would make their debut. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on the way, some believe there’s a possibility it will act as a conduit for introducing audiences and the MCU world to the arrival of mutants. Not to mention with Ryan Reynolds currently working with Marvel to bring Deadpool into the fold for a third film and Josh Boone still holding out hope that New Mutants‘ success could result in him getting to make his planned trilogy, the future looks bright for the X-Men characters coming to the MCU very soon.

Cherry: Joe Russo Says Tom Holland-Led Film is Almost Done With Post-Production

Cherry: Joe Russo says Tom Holland-led film is almost done with post-production

In a recent interview with Comic Book, the Russo Brothers gave another update on the current status of their upcoming crime drama film Cherry, revealing that they’re in the final steps of post-production for the Tom Holland-led film. Because of this, they’ve also teased that viewers should expect to see the first trailer in the “very near future.”

“We’re in the scoring phase right now, so we’re finishing our sound mix in about a month. A score will be done, I think in about two weeks,” Joe Russo said. “So we’re getting depth, we’re getting close to the point where the movie will be completed. We’re just weeks away.”

In addition, the Avengers: Endgame directing duo also addressed the movie’s release which was previously scheduled to debut sometime this year. “It’s complicated time right now to figure out what the release for it looks like and when we want that release to happen.”

Cherry tells the true-life story of author Nico Walker, a former Army medic who returned from Iraq with extreme un-diagnosed PTSD and fell into opioid addiction and began robbing banks. Walker was caught in 2011 and is scheduled to be released in 2020. The novel has been branded as a sort of hybrid of Jesus’ Son and Reservoir Dogs; a story about love, war, bank robberies, and heroin. You can get your own copy of the new release by clicking here! Walker previously handled the bidding war for his book while serving time in prison, which complicated matters since he was only allotted a specific amount of minutes per phone call.

“We were drawn to Cherry given our personal experience from Cleveland, as well as the important need to share stories like these. As Cleveland natives ourselves, it means a lot to us to be able to film in our hometown. We shot the exteriors for ‘Winter Soldier’ here, we are excited to return home to our roots,” the Russos said in a previous statement.

Additional cast includes Ciara Bravo (Wayne), Bill Skarsgard (IT), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Jeff Wahlberg (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce), and Kyle Harvey (The After Party).

Cherry was adapted by Jessica Goldberg (The Path) and co-written by Angela Otstot (The Shield). The movie is produced by the Russo Brothers, Chris Castaldi and studio president Mike Larocca under their AGBO Films banner, alongside CEO Jonathan Grey and President Matthew Rhodes under their The Hideaway Entertainment banner. Cherry will be executive produced by Todd Makurath and Jake Aust from AGBO and The Hideaway Entertainment’s Kristy Maurer Grisham and Judd Payne.

Jurassic World: Dominion director discusses resuming production

This week brought the exciting news that Jurassic World: Dominion, the final installment in the blockbuster franchise’s sequel trilogy, and now co-writer and director Colin Trevorrow has opened up to Empire Magazine about heading to the UK to resume work on the project.

RELATED: The Batman, Jurassic World & More Resuming UK Filming

In looking at the current state of the world and the extra safety measures many productions are having to take overseas, Trevorrow found a big challenge will be capturing a world that isn’t affected by a time of social distancing and quarantine, but is “confident our guidelines will keep us safe.”

For many of us, Dominion was already the biggest creative challenge of our lives, before the lockdown,” Trevorrow said while also explaining that post-production was possible for the early scenes the crew had managed to shoot pre-lockdown. “The shooting schedule really worked to our advantage – the first four weeks we put to film were mostly sequences with dinosaurs in them. So that allowed us to get a head start on VFX and workshop some of the newer elements without the pressure of a looming deadline. The hard part will be constructing a creative environment within all the precautions. Once the cameras roll, we have to forget our world and live in the world of the movie. That may take some practice.”

Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow return to executive produce Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World: Dominion, with Trevorrow once again directing the next chapter in one of the biggest franchises in the history of cinema. Producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley once again partner with Spielberg and Trevorrow in leading the filmmakers for this installment.

The upcoming threequel will be starring returning cast members from the first two Jurassic World films include Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy Daniella Pineda, Justice Smith as well as original Jurassic Park stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Campbell Scott. It will also feature Mamoudou Athie (Sorry for You Loss), DeWanda Wise (She’s Gotta Have It), Dichen Lachman (Animal Kingdom, Altered Carbon), Scott Haze (VenomAntlers).

Joining the Jurassic team for the first time is Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim UprisingThe Black Hole), who will craft the Jurassic World 3 screenplay with Trevorrow. They will work off a story by Derek Connolly and Trevorrow, who together co-wrote Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Jurassic World: Dominion is currently set to debut in theaters on June 11, 2021.

Armageddon Time: Focus Features nearing world rights deal for star-studded film

According to Deadline, Focus Features has already entered final negotiations for the worldwide theatrical distribution rights to director James Gray’s upcoming drama film Armageddon Time which is currently boasting a star-studded cast including Academy Award winners Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, and Cate Blanchett along with Golden Golden winner Oscar Isaac. On top of distribution, the outlet notes that the studio is also committed to funding the project for a deal that reportedly cost around $15 million.

RELATED: Cate Blanchett Officially Boards Eli Roth’s Borderlands!

Armageddon Time, which Gray wrote and is directing, is loosely based on his childhood memories and will be a coming-of-age story exploring friendship and loyalty against the historical backdrop of Ronald Reagan’s presidential election. The production is expected to be a departure in style from his past few films, with the director hoping to shoot in New York after the global pandemic.

Every film you make is different, but I’m trying to do something that is the opposite of the vast, lonely and dark void of the movie I just directed,” Gray said. “I’m anxious to make something that is very much about people, about human emotions and interactions between people, and I want it to be filled with warmth and tenderness. In some sense, yes it’s about my childhood, but an illustration of familial love really on every level. I’m of the belief that most people do their best and that they try their best under difficult circumstances and in some sense that’s a beautiful thing and very moving to me.

The 51-year-old writer/director discussed that previous reports about the project noting that the private school Gray attended once saw Donald Trump as a student, calling it “symbolic about what the school represented at the time” and show its “white protestant ethic.”

I found it very foreign to me, a product of the public school system in New York City of the ‘70s,” Gray said. “It’s about that transition and how it reflects on what the American society was and sadly still is. How we are separated along the lines of class and ethnicity. The film is really about that, my transition in school from one to the other. The implications of it are quite large. The world really became clearly divided to me, based on the haves and the have-nots. I didn’t write the script last week, but rather many months ago and it’s weird in that a lot of what we’re seeing right now is playing out of many of the themes that it was my ambition to explore in the first place. This obsession I have with examining American ideas of class mobility, to do it in a context that is humane with social impact.

The film, which is being produced by RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira and executive produced by Lourenço Sant’Anna and Rodrigo Gutierrez, will be introduced to the upcoming virtual Cannes market by Wild Bunch International and CAA Media Finance representing the film’s domestic distribution rights.

Armageddon Time will not only be a reunion between Gray and RT Features after Ad Astra, but will also be a reunion for stars De Niro and Hathaway after starring together in the Nancy Meyers written/directed comedy The Intern, Sutherland and De Niro after both 1900 and Backdraft and Hathaway and previously cast Cate Blanchett after Ocean’s 8.
