David Leitch’s Bullet Train lands Brad Pitt to star

Nearly two weeks after signing the Atomic Blonde director to helm the action-thriller for Sony Pictures, David Leitch’s Bullet Train has found its star in the form of two-time Oscar winner Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), according to Variety.

Bullet Train will mark the eighth collaboration between the 50-year-old filmmaker and 56-year-old actor, who first worked together in 1999 on Fight Club on which Leitch worked as an uncredited stunt double for Pitt, followed by 2001’s The MexicanOcean’s Eleven and Spy Game, the latter two in which he doubled again for Pitt and helped coordinate the martial arts stunts on the Tony Scott-helmed film. Leitch would once again double for Pitt in 2004’s Troy and 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith and would later reunite with the star in 2018’s Deadpool 2, in which Pitt cameoed as Vanisher and Leitch directed.

On top of directing, Leitch will supervise the script written by Zak Olkewicz (Fear Street). Plot details for the film are currently being kept under wraps, but it is based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Isaka Kotaro.

Leitch and Kelly McCormick will produce the project via their company 87North along with Antoine Fuqua (The Magnificent Seven, Training Day, The Equalizer) and Kat Samick (The Equalizer, Southpaw, Infinite). Brittany Morrissey is the executive overseeing the film for Sony Pictures.

Leitch and McCormick recently signed a first-look deal at Universal and produced the action film Nobody, starring Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk, which is expected to release in February 2021. The duo is also developing a biopic of Jutta Kleinschmidt, the first and only woman to win the brutal off-road endurance race known as The Dakar Rally, as well as the rights to her book My Victory at Dakar.

Charlize Theron Opens Up About Furiosa Prequel

Charlize Theron opens up about Furiosa prequel

The past few months have seen some exciting new developments in the Mad Max franchise as writer/director George Miller revealed he has a film focused on Imperator Furiosa in the works, but it being a prequel means the lack of Charlize Theron reprising her role and in a new interview, the Oscar winner has opened up about the project.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for Netflix’s The Old Guard, Theron revealed that she is disappointed by the fact the new film will see her recast with an actress in her 20s for the younger iteration of the character, calling it “a tough one to swallow.”

Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making that film with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best, “ Theron said. “Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on.

Talks began swirling in late March that executives and filmmakers began taking video and phone meetings in hopes of greenlighting new projects over the next 12 months including Miller, who has begun eyeing a number of actresses to take on a younger iteration of Theron’s character, with the previous word being he was looking to cast The New Mutants‘ Anya Taylor-Joy.

Mad Max: Fury Road, which opened in May of 2015, is the story of Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy (InceptionThe Dark Knight Rises). Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland. A Mad Max prequel might show us her life in The Green Place before she started working for Immortan Joe.

The Batman, Jurassic World & more resuming UK filming

As countries overseas are getting a hold on the pandemic and Hollywood itching to get the productions for major blockbusters back on track, The Wrap has brought word that The BatmanJurassic World: Dominion and more are set to resume filming in the United Kingdom.

Following an exemption of quarantine rules and an agreement of specific quarantine-like conditions, Matt Reeves’ adaptation of the DC Comics hero and the final installment in the Jurassic World trilogy will get back to shooting in England alongside Mission: Impossible 7Fantastic Beasts 3, Sony’s live-action Cinderella and Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden revealed at a press conference over the weekend that he personally spoke with M:I star and producer Tom Cruise about the exemption, resulting in the decision to allow production to resume on the various blockbuster projects. However, the exemption will see the crew members involved with the various productions to be restricted to a “bubble” environment, having to live in close proximity to the production area and not being allowed to leave to surrounding communities.

The world’s biggest blockbusters and high-end TV shows are made in Britain,” Dowden said. “Our creativity, expertise and highly successful tax reliefs for our screen industries means that we are an in-demand location that in turn delivers a great return for our economy. We want the industry to bounce back and exempting small numbers of essential cast and crew from quarantine is part of our continued commitment to getting cameras rolling safely again.

Constantine movie rumored in development at Warner Bros.

DC Comics’ John Constantine has received a multitude of screen adaptations over the years to various fanfare and with J.J. Abrams currently developing a Justice League Dark series for HBO Max, a rumor has surfaced that a new live-action film focused on the sorcerer is also in development at Warner Bros. (Via ComicBook.com)

After The Direct initially reported that a source told them a live-action Constantine solo film was in the works at the studio with Bad Robot and Abrams attached as producer and its tone would be in line with his HBO Max series, The Observer’s Brandon Katz took to Twitter to confirm he’s also heard some potential rumblings, which even includes the possibility of Keanu Reeves returning to the role after starring in the 2005 film.

The rumor does come on the heels of rumors that have begun swirling that the studio is also currently developing a film adaptation of DC Comics’ magician superheroine Zatanna Zatara, which is reportedly being worked as independent from Abrams’ Justice League Dark series. Though this may sound like a complicated affair to some fans, it’s not entirely impossible as WB and DC are planning to introduce big-screen audiences to the concept of the multiverse in the forthcoming The Flash, with Michael Keaton reportedly in talks to reprise his role as Batman in the film as an alternate universe version of the hero.

RELATED: Live-Action Zatanna Movie Reportedly Moving Forward at Warner Bros.

It also wouldn’t be the first time the various film and TV worlds have crossed over or existed simultaneously, with DC Universe/HBO Max series Doom Patrol featuring Joivan Wade’s portrayal of Victor Stone/Cyborg while the DC Extended Universe features Ray Fisher in the same role. It was even explained in this year’s Arrowverse crossover event, “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” that the DCEU, Arrowverse and Titans/Doom Patrol universe all are on separate Earths, with Ezra Miller’s Flash cameoing in The Flash episode while Wade’s Cyborg cameoed in Legends of Tomorrow‘s episode.

Though it’s currently unclear as to who would star in the film as Constantine, given the recent cult following surrounding Reeves’ initially derided outing and his resurgence in popularity at the box office with the John Wick franchise and the forthcoming The Matrix 4 and Bill and Ted Face the Music, as well as the 55-year-old’s continued desire to reprise the role, it’s entirely possible WB would look to him to star in the film.

Black Widow: Cate Shortland confirms prequel will ‘Hand the Baton’ to Florence Pugh

Since it was announced in 2018 that Marvel Studios has indeed finally ordered a solo Black Widow movie after so many years of development and fan interest, Marvel fans have been wondering the nature of Scarlett Johansson’s first solo MCU film, especially given her character’s fate in Avengers: Endgame. Their speculations continued to grow when Florence Pugh was cast as Yelena Belova, who is also known in the comics as Black Widow. Because of this, fans have been theorizing that the upcoming film might also be Marvel Studios’ way of introducing a new character that would take on the legacy of the titular Avenger throughout future MCU films.

RELATED: Black Widow Final Trailer Features Lots of New Footage

In a recent interview with Empire, director Cate Shortland has seemingly confirmed this theory by revealing that some new details about Black Widow and Yelena Belova’s future ahead of its November 2020 release.

“[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland said. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

She also further revealed that the upcoming film will definitely be able to give Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff the proper farewell that she didn’t get in the last Avengers film. “In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral,” Shortland explained. “She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”

Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger. The film is expected to be set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, but before Avengers: Infinity War.

Black Widow will also feature a star-studded cast including Golden Globe nominee David Harbour (Stranger ThingsHellboy) as Alexei aka The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family) as Yelena Belova, Academy Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason.

The movie was directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) from a script written by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle). Black Widow is set to release on November 6, 2020.
