Courtney Cox returning for Scream reboot!

Just over two months after announcing that franchise veteran David Arquette would be returning for the highly-anticipated reboot, it’s now been revealed that Courteney Cox is set to return for the next Scream film from directing duo Radio Silence (Ready or Not) as strong-willed journalist Gale Riley (née Weathers)!

RELATED: David Arquette Returning For Scream Reboot!

The 56-year-old actress becomes the second actor from the original franchise to sign on for the fifth film in the series after Arquette, Cox’s real-life ex-husband and in-film husband, signed on to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in May and lead heroine Neve Campbell still in talks to return.

While plot details are currently scarce, it is being reported that the film will follow “a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.”

It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers,” Radio Silence said in a previous statement. “Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.

The new film will be produced by Project X Entertainment’s James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), who is also co-writing the screenplay with Guy Busick (Ready or Not), as well as Paul Neinstein and William Sherak for Spyglass, with original screenwriter Kevin Williamson executive producing with Radio Silence’s third member Chad Villella.

The first film, released in 1996, was a surprise smash upon its debut, helping to revive the horror genre for the decade and becoming the highest-grossing slasher movie of all-time until it was dethroned by last year’s Halloween reboot. The first’s success spawned a franchise that includes three sequels, the first of which remained equally as successful as the first while the previous two saw middling box office returns and mixed reviews.

After years of struggling to get another film off the ground, MTV picked up a series adaptation that became a cult hit, with two well-received seasons from fans before it was passed off to VH1 for its rebooted third season, which saw mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, but was a minor improvement in the ratings from the second season.

The Scream revival marks the second major horror franchise reboot Spyglass is working on, with the studio developing a remake of the Clive Barker cult horror classic Hellraiser, with David S. Goyer (Terminator: Dark Fate) attached to pen the script.

Neve Campbell (Party of Five, The Craft) has played Sidney Prescott in the original blockbuster hit Scream way back in 1996. Since then, she became the face of the popular slasher franchise as she also starred in three follow-up sequels. The most recent entry, Scream 4, released in 2011 and grossed $97 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. Campbell recently appeared in Netflix’s House of Cards and the film Castle in the Ground.

The New Mutants Gets a New Synopsis Confirming Magik's X-Men Link

The New Mutants Gets a new synopsis confirming Magik’s X-Men link

20th Century Studios has released a brand new synopsis for director Josh Boone’s long-delayed X-Men film The New Mutants which you can check out below, providing us with a more detailed premise for the film including the confirmation of Illyana Rasputin/ Magik’s connection to long-time X-Men member Colossus. Assuming that everything finally falls into place, the PG-13 film is currently set to hit the theaters on August 28.

“In this terrifying, action-fueled film based on the MARVEL comic series, five young people who demonstrate special powers are brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments they are told will cure them of the dangers of their powers. Included are Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt), who creates illusions from other people’s fears; Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), who transforms into the werewolf Wolfsbane; Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), who, as Cannonball, can fly at jet speeds protected by a force field; Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga), who absorbs and channels solar power; and Illyana Rasputin aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy). The younger sister of Colossus, Magik becomes encased in armor at will and wields a soulsword that amplifies her multiple superhuman and psychic abilities. Invited by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) to share their stories about when their powers first manifested, the five “patients” come to understand that they are in a class of people called mutants, who have historically been marginalized and feared. As they relive their origin stories, their memories seem to turn into terrifying realities. Soon, they question what is real and what isn’t, and it becomes clear that the institution isn’t what it seems. Now the question is — why are they being held captive? And who is trying to destroy them?”

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic, and Cannonball facing the Demon Bear.

Toronto International Film Festival Sets 2020 Hybrid Lineup

Shortly after fellow prestige cinema convention Venice announced its lineup for the 2020 edition, Toronto Film Festival has revealed its full roster of projects set to premiere at its hybrid event, including Chloe Zhao’s upcoming adaptation of Nomadland starring Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).

RELATED: Venice Film Festival 2020 Competition Lineup Unveiled

With the global pandemic still going on in the states and some parts of the world, the festival will be slimmed down in comparison to past outings and will focus mostly on Oscar fare rather than also including major blockbuster productions. In trying to follow in the footsteps of Venice Film Festival, the North American showcase of films at TIFF will feature 46 percent of films directed or co-directed by women in an effort for better gender parity compared to last year’s 36 percent.

TIFF will screen its films over the first five days with physical, socially-distanced exhibitions provided there are no spikes in the region, with indoor gathering sizes being allotted up to 50 people, but for members of the public and press who feel uncomfortable with going in-person, screenings and market business will still be taking place online.

TIFF has a proud history of programming award-winning films, expanding the conversation to include a multitude of voices, and in creating boundary-pushing initiatives for the industry,” Joana Vicente, Executive Director and Co-Head, TIFF, said in a statement on the official festival website. “And this year we’ve added new innovations and ways to give back to the community. In doing so, we’re aiming to advance what a film festival is capable of delivering — for audiences and the film industry. We could never have anticipated the global seismic changes we would be facing in 2020. We tapped into the original spirit of the Festival from when it began in 1976 as our guiding light. The distilled edition of TIFF 2020 reflects a deep love of film, passion for our loyal audiences, commitment to the industry, and a whole lot of heart.
