Walt Disney Studios and Pixar have announced their newest animated feature titled Luca, hailing from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, who is known for his work on the 2011 animated short La Luna. The new Pixar film is scheduled to make its debut in the summer of 2021. This announcement comes ahead of the upcoming theatrical release of their Jamie Foxx-led animated film Soul on November 20.

Set in Italy, the animated film is being described as a coming-of-age adventure that will tell the story of a young boy named Luca as he experiences an unforgettable summer with his newfound best friend in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera. But all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.
“This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca,” Casarosa said in a statement. (via Variety) “So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

The film will also be produced by Andrea Warren (Lava, Cars 3)

Even though Solo: A Star Wars Story probably doesn’t rank highly on anyone’s list of the best Star Wars films, the movie ended on a pretty big cliffhanger when it was released in 2018. So it makes sense that some fans are hoping to get a sequel, if only to tie up loose ends. Over the last two years, rumors about Lucasfilm’s plans for Alden Ehrenreich’s young Han Solo have continued to swirl online. But now, a new update has come courtesy of director Ron Howard, and it’s not very reassuring.
Howard recently spoke to Radio Andy on Sirius XM (via ComicBook.com) about the various projects he’s currently working on. Sadly, his upcoming slate doesn’t include a Solo follow-up.
“Well, there’s no sequel planned now,” said Howard. “And it’s amazing to be a part of a Star Wars movie that seems to be a kind of underground hit, which is not what you’d expect. But that’s been an odd, strange journey for that movie.”
RELATED: POLL RESULTS: How Should Solo Return to the Star Wars Universe?
“Strange” doesn’t even begin to describe Solo’s evolution from concept to screen. Lucasfilm originally hired Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct the movie in 2015 and they began shooting in 2017. However, the studio fired them a mere five months into production due to creative differences. Howard subsequently came onboard to replace them, and he allegedly re-shot at least 70% of the film.
Howard’s latest comments follow rumors that began making the rounds last week about how Lucasfilm was considering a new Disney+ series headlined by Donald Glover’s young Lando Calrissian. Unfortunately, a show like this probably won’t be materializing anytime soon. Solo co-writer Jon Kasdan also weighed in on the chances of a sequel back in March, but his outlook was similarly bleak. Regardless, Howard and Kasdan aren’t completely severing their relationship with the House of Mouse. During the same interview with Radio Andy, Howard claimed that their long-gestating Willow sequel series is in “active development” at Disney+.

After initially being primed to be the first major theatrical release of the summer, the Russell Crowe-starring thriller Unhinged has pushed its release date back once again as the pandemic has seen another spike in the United States.
RELATED: Exclusive Unhinged Clip Starring Russell Crowe & Caren Pistorius
The film, which was originally slated to hit theaters in July, will now be hitting theaters on August 21, with the official statement confirming that though not all theaters will be open in time for the release, forecasts show that more will open up the film’s second weekend of release and that “80 percent” of moviegoers were surveyed and said they would “definitely attend” the film in theaters.
“On behalf of the U.S. exhibition community, I want to thank Solstice Studios for their commitment to bringing Unhinged to theaters and for doing their part to help reinvigorate the theatrical movie business,” John Fithian, President and CEO of the National Association of Theater Owners, said in a statement. “Movie theaters are able to safely reopen with thorough health and safety measure in many states across the country, but if studios wait until 100 percent of the theaters are open, it will be too late. We need supporters like Solstice Studios and Unhinged is the perfect film to kick off the opening of theaters to capture the last weeks of summer box office, followed by Tenet on Labor Day weekend and a strong fall schedule.”
Unhinged is a psychological thriller starring Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator) from Carl Ellsworth, the writer of Red Eye and Disturbia, and Lisa Ellzey, the producer of Warrior and Kingdom of Heaven. It takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of a mother who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy. “Road rage” doesn’t begin to describe what he’s about to do to her and everyone she knows.

The film is directed by Derrick Borte (American Dreamer) and also stars Caren Pistorius (Mortal Engines), Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out, Child’s Play), Jimmi Simpson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Westworld) and Austin P. McKenzie (When We Rise).
Unhinged is slated to be the first wide release back in theaters on August 21.

This morning marked a major day in Hollywood as after a heated battle between the two, AMC Theatres and Universal Pictures entered an exclusive exhibition agreement and in its wake, Cineworld’s CEO Mooky Greidinger has responded with criticism, saying they “do not see any business sense in this model” to Deadline.
RELATED: Universal & AMC Announce Agreement for Exhibition of Universal Films
“While we don’t know the full details and we are always analyzing any move in the industry, we will analyze it,” Greidinger said. “People need to be aware that the first big movie from Universal is coming only in six months so there is no pressure here. But we clearly see this as a wrong move at the wrong time. Clearly we are not changing our policy with regards to showing only movies that are respecting the theatrical window.”
When the beef between AMC and Universal first began earlier this year after the studio announced it would release Trolls World Tour and other major titles in theaters and on digital platforms simultaneously, due to the global pandemic, Greidinger expressed similar feelings, stating that the chain “will not be showing movies that fail to respect” the traditional release windows.
The United Kingdom-based company is the owner of both the Cineworld chain overseas and the Regal Cinemas chain here in the US, the second-largest in the country with 7,155 screens across 542 theaters and 42 states.

Sources report that the Universal-AMC deal is being considered a stateside experiment and that the details on whether this will extend to international distribution deals, as it is proving difficult for the studio. The studio currently has overseas distribution deals with MGM for No Time to Die in November and Candyman in October, as well as DreamWorks’ The Croods 2 in December and Tom Hanks-led News of the World the same month.

Searchlight Pictures has set Seth Rogen (Preacher, Console Wars, The Boys) and Evan Goldberg (Sausage Party, The Night Before, This Is the End) to write the script for Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood with Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name) to direct the narrative feature based on director Matt Tyrnauer’s biographical documentary, according to Deadline.
RELATED: Luca Guadagnino Signs On For Scarface Remake At Universal
The film focuses on Scotty Bowers, a World War II Marine combat veteran who fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima and became a legendary bisexual male hustler and date-arranger for gay Hollywood movie stars from the 1940s until the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
Watch Tyrnauer’s Scott Bowers documentary here!
The documentary is based on Bowers’ book Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars (available to order here), a dishy tell-all that was so titled because Bowers arranged these liaisons from a gas station he ran in the shadow of the Hollywood studios. Despite the prurient nature of his business, Bowers was beloved because he created a safe environment for gay members of the showbiz community to hook up in secret in what otherwise would have been a much more dangerous and possibly deadly pursuit.
