Based on a real-life story, this film centers around a mentally-changed father named Lee Yong-gu and his 7-year-old daughter Ye-sung, who only depends on each other. Then due to an unfortunate accident, their simple life gets more complicated when Yong-gu was suddenly incarcerated after being wrongfully accused for child murder. Due to Ye-sung’s determination to reunite with her father, she somehow found a way to sneak her way inside the prison where Yong-gu was being held in cell no. 7 along with other five inmates. Now, they must band together to help protect Ye-sung from being discovered as she can’t bear the idea of separating from her beloved father again.
On top of its heartwarming story, Miracle in Cell No. 7 also features a stellar cast led by Park Shin-hye, Kal So-won and the versatile Ryu Seung-ryong, who you have probably seen in Netflix’s Kingdom. With this 2013 film, I can confidently recommend that this is one of the best South Korean films I’ve ever seen to date. But fair warning, for this film you should definitely prepare a box of tissues or anything to wipe away tears just in case.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook, this 2005 film is the third installment to Park’s Vengeance trilogy, preceded by Song Kang-ho’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Choi Min-sik’s Old Boy (which are both available for viewing on Asian Crush). It follows the story of a determined woman named Lee Geum-ja, who is trying to enact her revenge against the person that had caused her to abandoned her infant daughter by spending 13 years in prison for his crimes.
Although all of the films in the trilogy were all incredibly different and well-executed in their own ways, I think Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is the most underrated one despite also featuring a strong lead performance with Lee Yeong-ae’s powerful portrayal of an innocent woman suffering due to a man’s misdeeds.

Kim Joo-ho’s historical comedy film adds a new refreshing spin to the heist genre as it takes the Ocean’s Eleven concept to the Joseon era. Set during the last years of King Yeongjo’s reign when ice was more valuable that gold, the film introduces us to 11 professionals including a bookseller and an ex-royal guard, who have teamed up to use their different skills in planning a scheme that would stop corrupt officials from monopolizing the royal ice blocks.
This 2012 film is fun and highly-enjoyable which is very suitable for people of all ages. It also showcased a right balance of tension-filled action and slapstick humor which are attributed to the star-studded cast’s comedic chemistry that carried throughout the film. The Grand Heist is a great addition to your must-watch list for scheduled movie nights with friends or family.

Starring Kim Ji-won and Yoo Yeon-seok, Horror Stories begins when a high-school student gets abducted by a serial killer who can only go to sleep when he listens to scary stories. In order for her to escape, she must now do her best to narrate four blood-chilling horror stories throughout the film.
Directed by six directors, this 2012 film is a horror anthology consisting of four short films featuring psychopaths and zombies. Each story offers a different kind of terror that will definitely satisfy your horror cravings while leaving you on the edge of your seat. In addition to its intense and terrifying stories, its main premise is also enough for horror fans to get hook on the film.

This classic film is absolutely a hidden gem among Asian Crush’s available South Korean titles because it features a powerhouse cast led by acclaimed veteran actors Park In-hwan and Na Moon-hee. Joining them are then rising actors Song Kang-ho and Choi Min-sik, who have both later found success in the local and international scenes for their memorable performances in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite and Park Chan-wook’s Old Boy, respectively.
This 1998 film is a black comedy horror film which centers around the Kang family, who have decided to leave the city to set up a Mountain Lodge for hikers. However, their hopes of achieving financial breakthrough gets immediately upended when their first guest suddenly dies. From there, things just continued to go downward spiral for the extended family as they’re led to a string of comically unfortunate events which are being caused by unimaginable scenarios.
Even though The Quiet Family involves a lot of violence, Kim Jee-woon’s directorial film debut had still found a way to showcase humor-filled sequences that somehow made sense within its eccentric storyline.

Starring Jun Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun, the film begins with a normal college student named Kyun-woo as he meets a mysterious and unusual girl on a train station. After their first encounter, Kyun-woo will then continuously get dragged into awkward and comical situations involving the nameless Girl, who has kept on appearing in his life. However, despite the Girl’s push and pull treatment towards him, Kyun-woo finds himself falling deeply in love with her as he continues to do things that would make the Girl happy.
Since its release in 2001, My Sassy Girl became one of South Korea’s highest-grossing comedy film of all time and had also gained a big following across Asia including Japan and Taiwan. On top of becoming a box office success, the film was also well-received among critics who had particularly praised Jun’s leading performance which led her to becoming one of Korea’s top actresses.

Next up is another one of director Kim Jee-woon’s hit films, who is best known for his works on The Good, The Bad, The Weird and I Saw The Devil. This 1993 film one is definitely a treat for horror fans who are interested in psychological dramas and wants a further introduction into South Korean films.
Based on a popular folktale from the Joseon Dynasty era, A Tale of Two Sisters begins when a teenage girl named Su-mi has finally returned home with her father and younger sister Su-yeon to their private lakeside house after being treated in a mental institution. As soon as they arrived, Su-mi and Su-yeon have unwillingly met with their stepmother again. However, strange things are starting to happen when Su-mi gets surreal nightmares involving her late mother. Because of this, she ends up believing that their stepmother Eun-joo has dark secret that has something to do with the downfall of her family.

In order to save her rising medical career, Mi-soo tries her best to gain Kang-il’s trust and good graces because he’s apparently the only solution for her problem.
This 2012 film contains the classic rom-com formula that viewers had already grown familiar of. Despite that, it is still worth seeing due to the charming performance that Han Hyo-joo had delivered throughout the film which would really draw you to her character.

Scandal Makers begins with thirty-something radio DJ named Nam Hyeon-soo, who was previously a popular idol during his younger years. Little does he know, his bachelor life will suddenly get disrupted with the arrival of young single mother Hwang Jeong-nam along with her son, who introduces themselves as Hyeon-soo’s daughter and grandson. He has no other choice but to let them live with him in order to protect his reputation as a celebrity. However, keeping their secret proves to be a more difficult task as he finds out that his daughter has entered his radio station’s singing competition because of her dream of becoming a singer.
Starring Park Bo-young and Cha Tae-hyun, this 2008 comedy film features a fun and entertaining story about an unlikely family. Despite dealing with a serious topic concerning parenting, the film has still managed to work its way through it without completely undermining the lesson that it needs to convey. Filled with comedic moments from the leading trio, the film is a definitely a good choice for family movie nights.

Based on a popular South Korean webtoon series of the same name, the film centers around a normal high school student named Woo Ki-myung, who keeps on getting picked on by school bullies due to his cowardliness and submissive behavior. When he finally moves to the city and attends a new school, he then finds the opportunity to reinvent himself as his school’s new Fashion King. However, as he tries to reach the top, Ki-myung forms a rivalry against the wealthy and stylish Won-ho, who has been very determined to achieve the Fashion King title for himself.
This 2014 film is a coming-of-age story that is being told through the competitive lens of fashion. Admittedly, the film does have some weird moments and plot holes about its storyline which might confused viewers at first. However, despite those things, the film is still enjoyable and it also features a valuable lesson about standing up for yourself.

Following Alden Ehrenreich’s tease about possibly returning to the Star Wars universe as a younger iteration of the iconic Han Solo, ComingSoon.net asked our readers how they would like to see him return and with over 1,000 votes, the results are in! How Should Solo Return to the Star Wars Universe?
Ehrenreich made his debut in the Disney-owned franchise in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, taking over from Harrison Ford in a younger version of the titular character that explored his origins before originally being introduced in 1977’s Star Wars. The production of the film is one of the most notoriously troubled in Hollywood, with Lucasfilm firing original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller over creative differences and replacing them with Ron Howard, though this would require major reshoots and rewrites that would balloon the production budget to an estimated $300 million.
Upon finally hitting theaters after rushing to make its May 2018 release date, Solo received generally mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, with plenty of praise being aimed at the performances from the cast, namely Ehrenreich and Donald Glover as a younger Lando Calrissian, as well as the visuals and action sequences, with the majority of the criticism being aimed at the story and screenplay. This mixed reception did lead to the film becoming the first box office failure in the 40-plus year franchise, grossing a mere $393.2 million worldwide, losing Disney a reported $76.9 million, putting reported planned sequels in doubt.

Despite this initial mixed reception, the film has garnered something of a cult following in the years since its release, with the hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen trending on Twitter multiple times and seeing users share their praise for the film and desire to see a continuation of its story, as well as spin-offs centered on Glover’s Lando and Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra.

Netflix is expanding its roster of high-profile upcoming projects by landing the rights to Rumaan Alam’s forthcoming novel Leave The World Behind with Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts reuniting after 1993’s The Pelican Brief, according to Deadline.
RELATED: Joel Coen’s Macbeth Adaptation Starring Denzel Washington On Hiatus
The novel is set to hit shelves on October 6 and the official synopsis reads as follows:
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.
Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple—and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one other?

In addition to landing Roberts and Washington to star as Amanda and G.H., Netflix has signed Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail to direct and adapt the novel, reuniting him with Roberts after the two worked closely together on the first season of Amazon’s Homecoming, in which Roberts starred and executive produced, while Esmail was co-creator and executive producer.
The rights to the novel came in a seven-figure deal with the streaming platform after a heated biding war amongst various streaming platforms and studios, with Netflix, Apple and MGM leading the pack of 10 other bids for film or limited series adaptations, with the former coming out victorious.

The Oscar winners have reportedly been itching to work together again after the 1993 adaptation of the John Grisham legal thriller novel, in which, though it received mixed reviews from critics, the two received praise for their performances and chemistry on screen.

With Warner Bros. seeking to focus on individual films rather than more team-ups following the box office disappointment of Justice League, the follow-up films in the DC Extended Universe have made little mention to it and now director Zack Snyder has opened up about how his upcoming cut will affect the continuity of the franchise. (Via JoBlo)
RELATED: Junkie XL Will Use Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel Theme for Justice League
In an interview with Beyond the Trailer, Snyder revealed that the film, for now, will not affect the future continuity of the DCEU, instead joking that it takes place in the “Snyder-verse” and that his main focus for the upcoming director’s cut is to “satisfy” the story he set up in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.
“It’ll be five years old when it comes out for me, I’ve been living with it for that long,” Snyder said. “Frankly, the DC cinematic universe has branched like a tree and blossomed and grown in amazing and great ways. But for me, where [Justice League] falls, I believe that it really starts to represent its own path. It’s kind of separate now from the DC cinematic universe continuity, it’s divergent in that way, and I think that’s a good thing.”
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. No new footage will be shot, however.
Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Miller as The Flash, Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

Jared Leto’s portrayal of iconic Batman villain The Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad has been one of intense debate and now the writer/director has confirmed on Twitter that the original script saw him and Cara Delevigne’s Enchantress teamed up near the climax and that he has shot and edited it! Read the nail-biting scene below!
Yes I did. Shot and edited. Of course you were not permitted to see it my friend https://t.co/PGSpz29T2Y
— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) July 20, 2020

As a director who clearly adores and appreciates his fan base, Ayer has been pretty responsive and open when it comes to a variety of questions surrounding the various cuts and changes made to his project, from the original designs and motivations of the Parademons to more Jared Leto Joker footage. A recent social media revelation showed that one big Parademon was originally supposed to be the final “boss fight” of sorts in the film before Warner Bros. nixed the idea and they went with the barely expanded-upon brother of Enchantress, Incubus.
The ball is firmly in Warner Bros. court on this one. It certainly bodes well that Ayer doesn’t seem to harbor any ill will toward the studio, nor with Gunn and vice versa. Ayer has also said that there’s a lot more footage of Jared Leto’s Joker nestled somewhere in the WB archives. Regardless, there’s the matter of what kind of resources the studio is willing to give Ayer to realize his true vision of the film. Warner Bros. is reportedly giving Snyder an estimated $20-30 million to properly finish his Justice League cut, but with Ayer recently confirming he wouldn’t need anywhere close to that to finish his version, many are questioning why not just allow him to go for it.

After taking a break from ongoing comics series, this is the one that sucked me right back into the Marvel world in the best way. Imagine the Hulk/Bruce Banner you know and love, but now writer Al Ewing has revolutionized the character by emphasizing the Jekyll/Hyde aspects of him. By leaning into the Devil Hulk persona, this bestselling series is the first to truly embrace the horror aspects of Hulk like never before. This includes a gruesome Hulk autopsy that truly tests the title of the series and a trip straight into hell itself. It’s much more adult territory for the superhero, far more Re-Animator than Avengers. Also, the covers by legendary Alex Ross are some of his best work. If you haven’t taken the plunge with this title yet trust me when I tell you do not hesitate, and order as much of the run as you can because you are going to literally DEVOUR it!

Fans have fallen in love with Henry Cavill over the years, partly because of his stellar role as Superman/Clark Kent in the DCEU in addition to his hunky, badass portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation. I want to take the Cavill fangirl train back a few years, though, and remind viewers of director Tarsem Singh’s 2011 action fantasy drama Immortals, starring Cavill as Theseus who leads a star-studded cast including Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, John Hurt, and Freida Pinto. Immortals, written by Vlas Parlapanides and Charley Parlapanides, is loosely based on the Greek myths of Theseus, the Minotaur, and the Titanomachy. Besides fun performances by Cavill and co., where Immortals really shines is its action sequences that still stick out in my mind even nearly a decade later.

Valve has offered gamers a number of exciting and pulse-pounding titles over the past 23 years, but one of their best is a more tranquil and mind-bending affair: Portal 2. A sequel to the 2007 puzzle-platform game, the 2011 title continues the story of heroine Chell as she navigates the Aperture Science Enrichment Center during its reconstruction to escape the maniacal GLaDOS with the help of new robot Wheatley. The original game was a fun, if short, title full of unique puzzles and challenges and Portal 2 does exactly what a sequel should in expanding its story in an intelligent and breathtaking fashion, doubling down on its dark humor, offering even more fascinating and challenging puzzles while still keeping the learning curve level for casual gamers. With the brilliant additions of Stephen Merchant and J.K. Simmons to the voice cast, this game is not only one of the best sequels of all-time but is also one of the best video game titles ever created and is a wonderfully quaint and aesthetically pleasing title to get your hands on.

Directed by Oh Choong-hwan from a script written by acclaimed South Korean writing duo The Hong Sisters, Hotel Del Luna revolves around a mystical and supernatural hotel which only accepts wandering ghosts as guests with the staffs catering to their every need and helping them with their unfinished business before they can truly pass on the afterlife. The titular hotel is headed by a long-time owner named Jang Man-wol, who is neither a ghost nor a human and was bound to the hotel by the deity Mago due to her mysterious past. When the time has finally come to hire a new general manager, who will handle the human affairs needed for the hotel, Man-wol has decided to collect a debt she made years ago with a man who mistakenly stole something from her. In exchange for his life and wealth, his only son must work for her after 20 years. That’s why the smart and capable Gu Chan-sung has no other choice but to become the new general manager while trying to face his fear of ghosts.
Hotel Del Luna is a 16-episode fantasy drama series which was one of last year’s highest-rated Korean dramas. I highly recommend this series because it offers a unique and charming storyline that will definitely get viewers hooked through every scene. In addition to its intriguing main storyline, each episode also features a side story centering on a different spirit that covers many different topics concerning societal problems.
What I like the most about this series is its visually stunning cinematography and high-quality sets. K-Pop superstar Lee Ji-eun, better known as IU, has yet again proven her acting prowess and has successfully led another beloved drama with Hotel Del Luna. Through her character’s fierce personality and iconic wardrobe, IU will no doubt captivate viewers with her strong and memorable performance as Jang Man-wol.

One of the positives of this whole quarantine situation is the amount of time I have to go back and re-watch classic films I hadn’t seen for years. Case in point: Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, an astonishing, simple, but sprawling western epic that continues to stand as a towering cinematic achievement. Many will remember Ennio Morricone’s iconic score, and Clint Eastwood’s growling “Blondie,” but can we take a moment to appreciate just how damned good Eli Wallach is in this flick? The man delivers an intensely physical performance during which his character commits heinous crimes and tortures the film’s hero via the old walk-through-the-desert tactic, but still elicits empathy during his savage beating at the hands of Lee Van Cleef’s Angel Eyes.
Sadly, this was Eastwood’s last pairing with Leone after the two had grown tired of working with one another following A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. Too bad. This was an amazing partnership, even if it only lasted three films.
