New Line’s Black Adam adds Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher!

Though production may still currently be on halt for the long-in-development Black Adam film starring Dwayne Johnson (Jungle Cruise) in the titular role, the DC Extended Universe project has taken a major step in development and added Noah Centineo (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Created by Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway and first appearing in JSA Secret Files and Origins #1 in August 1999, Atom Smasher, whose alter ego is Albert Rothstein, is a superhero with the ability to control his molecular structure and is able to manipulate his size and strength and has worked with multiple teams over the years including Justice Society of America, Justice League America and Suicide Squad. Though Black Adam will mark his feature debut, Atom Smasher made his first live-action appearance on The CW’s The Flash portrayed by Adam Copeland in a more villainous take on the character.

Like many other film projects right now, Black Adam‘s production is currently delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has also affected the production of Johnson’s upcoming Netflix film Red Notice with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot.Centineo will play Atom Smasher, a character who can control his molecular structure and is able to manipulate his size and strength. The character has appeared on screen before, in an episode of The CW’s The Flash.

Dwayne Johnson has been working on Black Adam for 10 years. The character was originally supposed to appear in this year’s Shazam! but decided to save his highly-anticipated debut for a later film in order to let each character get some breathing room. However, despite not appearing in Shazam!, his character was teased with the wizard Shazam, played by Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), telling his origin story to Billy Batson.

Based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, Black Adam will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) with Johnson starring as the titular anti-hero and Adam Sztykiel having written the current script. The film will be the second collaboration between Collet-Serra and Johnson, who have also been working together on Disney’s forthcoming adventure film Jungle Cruise.

The film will be produced by Johnson and FlynnPicturesCo’s Beau Flyn along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions. Scott Sheldon will be overseeing the project for FlynnPictureCo.

Black Adam is slated to hit theaters on December 22, 2021.

The daughter of a Supreme Court Justice (Lexi Simonsen) is the target and this armed faction will stop at nothing to kidnap her Vic quickly realizes that there’s no one coming to rescue them and must now use his entire set of skills to save her and his son from an incredibly dangerous and lethal situation.

The movie also stars Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers, Alita: Battle Angel, Sleepy Hollow), Jack Griffo (Alexa & Katie, The Thundermans, Those Left Behind), and Lexi Simonsen (Roller World, Satan’s Seven, Vegas High). The movie was directed by Brian Skiba (Dirty Little Trick) and written by Eric Bromberg (Enemies Closer) and Paul Taegel (Vandal).

Apollo 10 1/2: Jack Black & Zachary Levi to star in Netflix’s new animated movie

It has already been 14 years since Richard Linklater’s second animated film A Scanner Darkly had its theatrical release in 2006, and now it looks like the filmmaker has already set up his newest and third animated feature as he officially partners with Netflix for the coming-of-age sci-fi film titled Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure. The project is being described as an innovative hybrid of hand-drawn and computer-animated imagery.

In addition, the streaming service has also announced the full cast which will be led by Golden Globe nominee Jack Black (School of Rock, Jumanji: The Next Level) and Shazam! star Zachary Levi.

Set against the backdrop of the 1969 Apollo mission to the moon, which celebrates its 51st anniversary today, Apollo 10 1/2:  A Space Age Adventure is inspired by Linklater’s childhood in Houston, TX. It will tell the story of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969 from two interwoven perspectives. It both captures the astronaut and mission control view of the triumphant moment, and the lesser-seen bottom-up perspective of what it was like from an excited kid’s perspective, living near NASA but mostly watching it on TV like hundreds of millions of others. It’s ultimately both an exacting re-creation of this special moment in history and a kid’s fantasy about being plucked from his average life in suburbia to secretly train for a covert mission to the moon.

“It struck me years ago that this was my film to make, from both a chronological and proximity level – I was there, going into 3rd grade. Our unique animation style allows both the conjuring of a world long gone, and the flowing, playful expression of memory and imagination. It’s been a fun, creative journey to incorporate things like 3D graphics into a live-action shoot to help bring this story to life,” Linklater said in a statement.

Joining Black and Levi are Glen Powell (Set It Up) and Josh Wiggins (Lost in the Sun) along with Milo Coy, Lee Eddy, Bill Wise, Natalie L’Amoreaux, Jessica Brynn Cohen, Sam Chipman, and Danielle Guilbot. This film will mark Black’s latest collaboration with Linklater, who previously worked together on the iconic musical comedy School of Rock and the 2011 black comedy Bernie.

Apollo 10 1/2:  A Space Age Adventure is written and directed by Richard Linklater. It is a co-production by Linklater’s Detour FilmProductions and Submarine with Tommy Pallotta, Mike Blizzard, Femke Wolting and Bruno Felix set as producers.

Production on the live-action shoot had already wrapped last March and will be completed at Minnow Mountain in Austin and Submarine in the Netherlands.

Directed by Don Hahn (Beauty and the Beast), Howard is the untold story of Howard Ashman, the brilliant lyricist behind Disney classics like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and creator of musicals including Little Shop of Horrors. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, personal films, and photographs, as well as interviews with Howard’s friends and family, the film is an intimate look at the Disney Legend’s life, his creative drive, and the process behind the music. Spanning his childhood in Baltimore, to his formative years in New York, and his untimely death from AIDS, Howard goes in-depth to explore his journey to become the lyricist behind some of the most beloved and well-known classic family films in the world.

“You may not know his name, but you sure know Howard Ashman’s music,” said Director, Writer and Producer Don Hahn. “He’s one of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century who helped to revitalize the American musical and re-energize Disney Animation. HBO debuts trailer for Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn

HBO has unveiled the first official trailer and premiere date for the upcoming documentary Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn, telling the story of the titular black teenager who was killed by a group of white men in 1989 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The trailer can be viewed in the player below!

On August 23, 1989, sixteen-year-old East New York-native Yusuf Hawkins and three of his friends made a trip to the predominantly Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn to view a used car his friend was hoping to buy. Unknowingly, the teenagers emerged from the subway station into a racially charged scene. A group of white young men had already gathered there, intent on harassing a group of black guys rumored to be dating girls in their neighborhood. Yusuf and his friends were quickly surrounded by the crowd of white attackers wielding baseball bats. In the midst of the attack, Yusuf was shot to death.

Devastated by the senseless murder and seeking answers, the Hawkins family was shocked when police asked them to stay silent in order to prevent civil unrest. However, the press caught wind of the story two days later and the family was met with Yusuf’s face on the front page of the newspaper. Yusuf’s father, Moses, reached out to activist Reverend Al Sharpton, who became the family’s spokesperson and co-organized a series of marches in the Bensonhurst neighborhood where Yusuf was killed. Throughout the protests in the year following Yusuf’s murder, activists, protestors and Yusuf’s family were met with intense racist vitriol from residents.

Though a handful of young men were arrested in connection with Yusuf’s murder, the suspected shooter, Joseph Fama, remained at large before eventually turning himself in. As the marches for justice continued, the tensions reached a fever pitch when Sharpton was stabbed before a protest in January 1991. Still, Yusuf’s brother Amir maintains that the protests were crucial in making the community’s voices heard, proving that “There’s always strength in numbers.”

Over 30 years later, New Yorkers, including Yusuf’s family and friends, reflect on the tragedy and the subsequent fight for justice that inspired and divided New York City. The film utilizes archival footage and photos, witness statements, news footage, in addition to candid interviews with Yusuf’s mother, Diane; brothers, Freddy and Amir; cousins, Darlene and Felicia Brown; and friend Christopher Graham and the two friends with him during the attack, Luther Sylvester and Bensonhurst native Russell Gibbons. The documentary also includes interviews with Defense Attorney Stephen Murphy; Joseph Fama, who was convicted of the crime; Reverend Al Sharpton, who became the family’s spokesperson; Assistant District Attorney Douglas Nadjari; activist Dr. Lenora Fulani; and former Mayor David Dinkins.

“It’s important to remember Yusuf Hawkins, honor his life and be mindful that our martyrs have families who need our love long after the marching subsides,” director Muta’Ali Muhammad said in a statement. “This film ties together the past and the present showing how racism can rear its head anywhere, even in a liberal city.”

The film, selected from more than 300 submissions, is the winning project of the inaugural Feature Documentary Initiative created by the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) and academy award winning production company, Lightbox, as part of their partnership to foster diversity in the feature documentary arena. The program is open to all African American documentary filmmakers and any documentary filmmakers interested in exploring nonfiction stories that speak directly to the Black experience.

Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn is directed by Muhammad with Jevon Frank, Victorious De Costa and Muhammad producing, Melanie Share co-producing and Jonathan Chinn, Simon Chinn, Jeff Friday, Dan Lindsay, T.J. Martin, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller and Jacqueline Glover all attached as executive producers.

The film is set to premiere on HBO on Wednesday, August 12 at 9 p.m. EST and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Palmer: Apple Acquires Justin Timberlake’s Drama Feature

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trolls World Tour star Justin Timberlake’s drama feature Palmer has been acquired by Apple, which will star Timberlake in the lead role.

In the movie, Timberlake plays Eddie Palmer, a former college football phenomenon who, after a stint in prison, returns to his hometown to get his life back on track. There, he faces not only lingering conflicts from his past but also a much more surprising challenge as he finds himself suddenly in charge of a unique young boy who has been abandoned by his wayward mother.

“We are excited to partner with Apple on this project as they continue to expand their impressive slate. It’s our hope that audiences around the world will connect with this sincerely touching story and we’re confident that ‘Palmer’ has found the right home,” said producers John Penotti and Charlie Corwin.

Palmer will also star Juno Temple (Atonement), Oscar nominee June Squibb (Nebraska), Alisha Wainright (Raising Dion), and newcomer Ryder Allen. The movie is directed by Oscar-winner Fisher Stevens (The Cove) from a screenplay by Cheryl Guerriero (Hunting Season), which appeared on the 2016 Black List.

The project comes from SK Global, Rhea Films, Nadler No GMO Popcorn Co., and the Hercules Film Fund. Sidney Kimmel, John Penotti, Charlie Corwin, Daniel Nadler, and Charles B. Wessler will produce with Robert Friedland, Terry Dougas, Jean-Luc De Fanti, Mark O’Connor, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, and Bruce Toll executive producing.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of SK Global by Head of Business and Legal Affairs Brian Kornreich, with Endeavor Content and CAA Media Finance representing the sale.
