An adaptation of the award-winning book about one very special gorilla, Disney’s The One and Only Ivan is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place one calls home. Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant, Bob the dog, and various other animals. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from, and where he ultimately wants to be.

The heartwarming adventure, which comes to the screen in an impressive hybrid of live-action and CGI, is based on Katherine Applegate’s bestselling book, which won numerous awards upon its publication in 2013, including the Newbery Medal.

Junkie XL Will Use Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel Theme for Justice League

Junkie XL Will Use Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel Theme for Justice League

Lost among some of the most recent Zack Snyder’s Justice League news was the reveal that Junkie XL would return to score the film — and he’ll be using work previously created by Hans Zimmer, including the epic Man of Steel theme.

The news was confirmed by Snyder himself during the Fourth of July Q&A during which he was asked, “We getting the Junkie XL score for Justice League?” Snyder responded with an enthusiastic, “F#$k yes!” Then, the director was asked about Hans Zimmer’s two-note piano theme for Superman, to which he replied, “Of course, is there any other?”

RELATED: Zack Snyder Says His Justice League Will Feature Zero Studio Compromises

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. No new footage will be shot, however.

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Miller as The Flash, Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

Jude Law in talks for live-action Peter Pan as Captain Hook

Audiences got a little taste last year of a more villainous side to Jude Law (Captain Marvel) and now the actor is ready to dive in to one of the most iconic villains of all time as he is in talks to portray Captain Hook in Disney’s upcoming live-action Peter Pan adaptation from David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

RELATED: Peter Pan & Wendy: Disney’s New Live-Action Movie Has Found Its Young Leads

The two-time Oscar nominee joins a cast that currently includes newcomers Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson, the latter of whom is the daughter of action star Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil). Molony’s acting credits include the Disney Junior’s Claude series and Sky One series The Reluctant Landlord. Anderson made her acting debut as a younger version of her mother in 2016’s action-horror film Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Anderson will next be seen in Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated Black Widow as the younger version of Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.

First published in 1911, Peter & Wendy tells the story of the boy who never grows up named Peter Pan as he meets Wendy Darling and takes her along with her brothers John and Michael to the magical island of Neverland. There, they get to meet the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell, followed by many dangerous adventures against Peter’s lifelong nemesis Captain Hook.

J.M. Barrie’s iconic tale has been adapted into a live-action film a few times including Steven Spielberg’s 1991 live-action film which starred Robin Williams and Julia Roberts; and 2003’s coming-of-age film starring Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood which was probably the most recognized live-action adaptation among many young people; and the most recent one, Joe Wright’s 2016 Pan starring Hugh Jackman. However, Disney’s 1953 animated film Peter Pan has remained the most popular adaptation of the tale.

Peter Pan & Wendy will be directed by Lowery (Pete’s Dragon, The Green Knight) with Toby Halbrooks having co-written the adaptation with Lowery. The project will be part of Disney’s growing slate of live-action films including The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, and Niki Caro’s upcoming Mulan which is set to hit theaters on March 27.

Last year, Disney has proven the success of their efforts of adapting many of their classic animated films into live-action with Jon Favreau’s The Lion King and Guy Richie’s Aladdin both earning a gross of over $1 billion.

Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo Review

Danny Trejo has lived an extraordinary life. The man started out as a criminal who terrorized Pacoima, California, pushed drugs, incited violence, and did hard time in high-security prisons like San Quentin. And yet, despite his problematic background, Trejo managed to turn his life into something meaningful; and in so doing morphed into not only a cinematic icon, but a celebrated hero amongst the Latino community.

Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo examines the actor in intimate detail and sheds light on the rugged, leathery, tattoo-laden exterior that has popped up in at least 135 films.

We follow Trejo around his old stomping grounds where he recalls the difficulties of living in the San Fernando Valley as a young Hispanic American. “You could be a laborer or a criminal in my neighborhood,” he says with a chuckle. “There weren’t a lot of doctors or lawyers.” There was plenty of TV, though, and Trejo grew up cheering on the likes of John Wayne whilst simultaneously getting swept up in the whirlwind of drugs and violence. He took his first hit of heroin at age 12, commenced robbing local stores shortly after using a sawed-off shotgun as his weapon of choice, and was in and out of jail for a majority of his youth. “Drugs take care of a lot of things,” he says. “Every feeling you got.”

Eventually, his actions landed him in San Quentin where he learned to survive with his boxing skills and take-no-shit attitude. “You have to control [that anger],” he says about prison life. “Because, if you start getting paranoid, people get paranoid of you.” In prison, size and strength mean nothing. And so, Trejo learned to be an alpha — the guy that would clock somebody in the head the second they looked at him funny. He earned respect, won a few boxing titles and, more importantly, stayed alive.

Trejo recalls his life in prison with harrowing detail, including the murders that took place over silly games of dominoes and the manner in which his fellow inmates laughed off such atrocities. And the actor discusses the moment in which he realized he no longer put much stock in human life and vowed to change his ways for the better.

He began attending AA meetings, swore off drugs and alcohol, and got a job.

Then, one day, one of his AA buddies invited him to the movie set of a film called Runaway Train starring Jon Voight and Eric Roberts. The director of that picture, Andrei Konchalovsky, took one look at Trejo and decided to cast him as an extra. This in turn led to a job as Roberts’ personal boxing trainer, and the rest is history.

Since his discovery, Trejo has worked alongside the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Michael Mann, and Robert Rodriguez. He has played silent assassins in films such as El Mariachi, lovable tough guys in family fare like Spy Kids, and charismatic badasses in cult classics like Machete. Through it all, Trejo has remained humble. He continues to visit inmates in prisons across the country and uses his fame to inspire good.

Hell, the town that he terrorized in his youth painted a mural in his honor!

Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo tells the story of a man who cleaned up his life, learned to love and respect others, and became a cultural icon to boot. Like Trejo, the documentary is rough, rugged, and undeniably fascinating.

Peter Farrelly’s Greatest Beer Run Ever Adds Dylan O’Brien

Peter Farrelly’s Greatest Beer Run Ever adds Dylan O’Brien

After last month brought word that Oscar winner Peter Farrelly and Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) would be reuniting for the director’s latest film, Variety is reporting that Dylan O’Brien (Maze Runner) is in talks to join the cast for The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

RELATED: Peter Farrelly Reuniting With Viggo Mortensen for New Film

Word of O’Brien’s potential casting comes on the heels of Farrelly’s announcement that New Zealand had granted a border exemption to the production to begin shooting in the coming months, amongst welcoming other productions.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever adaptation will serve as Farrelly’s next project after his feature Green Book won two Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The novel, set to be published this November and written by Joanna Molloy and John “Chickie Donohue, is a dramedy based on the true tale of Donohue, who in 1967 left New York to track down and share a few beers with his childhood buddies in the Army… while they were fighting in Vietnam.

Farrelly is set to co-write the screenplay alongside Green Book co-scribe Brian Currie and Pete Jones, who the two-time Oscar winner previously worked with on the 2011 modestly successful Hall Pass, which Jones received a story and co-writer credit alongside both Farrelly brothers and Kevin Barnett.

Pre-order your copy of the novel here!

The official book synopsis reads: In 1967, John (Chick) Donohue was a 26-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran working as a merchant seaman when he was challenged one night in a New York City bar. The men gathered at this hearth had lost family and friends in the ongoing war in Vietnam. Now, they were seeing protesters turn on the troops. One neighborhood patriot proposed an idea many might deem preposterous: One of them should sneak into Vietnam, track down their buddies in combat, and give each of them messages of support from back home, maybe some laughs — and beer.

Chick volunteered for the mission. He sailed to Vietnam on a cargo ship carrying a backpack full of American beer, landing in Qui Nho’n in 1968. Things went awry when Chick got caught in the Tet Offensive, starting in the early hours as an eyewitness to the battle to retake the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, where he became stuck for months.

Chick Donohue later became legendary as “the sandhog who went to Harvard.” He worked for decades on behalf of New York’s tunnel builders as the legislative and political director of Sandhogs Local 147.

This is the story of his epic beer run to Vietnam, in his own words and in those of the men he found in the war zone.

GKIDS acquires Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch

GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, has announced that it has acquired the North American distribution rights for legendary animation house Studio Ghibli’s latest feature Earwig and the Witch (alternatively titled Aya and the Witch)!

RELATED: Aya and the Witch Photos Preview Studio Ghibli’s First CG Film

Directed by Goro Miyazaki (From Up on Poppy Hill), son of Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro), who’s also credited with planning the project, the film marks Studio Ghibli’s first entirely 3D CG-animated feature and is an official selection for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It’s slated to debut on NHK in Japan this winter followed by a theatrical release in North America in early 2021!

“Nowadays, in our country, there are many adults and few children. It must be tough for these children, so few of them having to deal with so many adults,” Goro Miyazaki said in a previous statement. “It was while I was thinking about this that I got to know Earwig. And I realized, ‘That’s it!’ How does Earwig deal with the annoying adults? Please watch Earwig and The Witch to find out. She may be cheeky, but I sincerely hope that our adorable Earwig will encourage children and cheer up adults.”

Earwig and the Witch is based on the 2011 children’s novel of the same name which was written by the late British author Diana Wynne Jones, who also wrote the source novel for Studio Ghibli’s popular fantasy film Howl’s Moving Castle. The novel follows the story of a smart orphan girl named Earwig as she gets adopted by a woman named Bella Yaga, who turns out to be a cruel witch that takes her to live in a haunted house.

Pick up a copy of the book here!

The novel’s official synopsis reads: “In this enchanting introduction to Diana Wynne Jones’s magical and funny work, Earwig is a fearless young orphan. When she finds herself in a house of dark magic, she does whatever she can to adapt—especially if it means that she’ll learn a little magic herself! A young middle grade novel by World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement‒winner Diana Wynne Jones, beautifully illustrated in black and white by Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky.

Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald’s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it’s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald’s, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that . . . but not Earwig. Using her own cleverness—with a lot of help from a talking cat—she decides to show the witch who’s boss.”

Tom Hanks clarifies Greyhound Apple TV+ comments

After initially expressing heartbreak over his World War II action-thriller skipping a theatrical release in favor of Apple TV+, screenwriter and star Tom Hanks has clarified his statements to the Today Show regarding Greyhound‘s move to a streaming platform in a time when many theaters are still closed across the country. The full interview can be viewed in the player below!

RELATED: Greyhound: Tom Hanks Heartbroken Over Film’s Apple TV+ Release

“Well, I’m actually thrilled that Apple TV is making it possible for everybody to see it,” Hanks said. “Not only worldwide, as long as you have Apple Television, but also the day after my 64th birthday, thank you, thank you very much. This is a magnificent gift that’s come to us because of Apple. Because COVID-19 did something heartbreaking to us all. It closed down the theaters. We don’t have the cinema. There isn’t anybody that doesn’t like going to see a good movie with 800 other people and coming out with something in common. Barring that, Apple Television has saved the day for us. We had a magnificent movie that was not going to be seen because of the realities. It is going to be viewable, and otherwise we would’ve languished in a vault for a movie that, look, is 88 minutes of a thematic story that does speak to what we’re all going through right now. We didn’t know that at the time we made the film, we were just trying to make a lean, new spare version about procedures and behaviors about how difficult it was to stay alive in the North Atlantic in 1942.”

Based on C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd, the film will be set in the early days of WWII. In Greyhound, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous waters of the Black Pit in the North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. With no air cover protection for 5 days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy in order to give the allies a chance to win the war. The film is directed by Aaron Schneider.

The film stars Tom Hanks (Saving Private RyanA Beautiful Day in the NeighborhoodCast Away), Stephen Graham (SnatchTinker Tailor Soldier SpyRocketman), Rob Morgan (MudboundStranger ThingsDaredevil), and Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las VegasThe BoysDeath Wish).
