ComingSoon.net is saddened to bring you the news (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Ennio Morricone, two-time Oscar-winning Italian composer whose most notable works include The Good, the Bad & the Ugly and many others, has died at the age of 91 following complications from a fall last week in Rome that resulted in a broken femur.

Morricone had a storied career that spanned nearly 75 years, beginning in his early years as a composer for the theatre and would gradually begin working in the entertainment industry by composing scores for radio, television and pop artists before diving into film in the ’50s. He would get his big break in ’64 when director and former schoolmate Sergio Leone hired him to compose the score for the Clint Eastwood-starring Dollars Trilogy, with his theme for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly striking a chord in audiences’ hearts for years to come, being used in various pop culture in the time since.
After reuniting with Leone in Once Upon a Time in the West in ’68, he would begin to branch out from the western genre into other fields including giallo horror, working multiple times with Dario Argento in the ’70s on films including The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails and Four Flies on Grey Velvet, as well as Terrence Malick’s romantic period drama Days of Heaven, which would earn him his first Oscar nomination. The ’80s would see Morricone begin working with more American directors including John Carpenter for his sci-fi horror classic The Thing, Brian De Palma for the Oscar-nominated crime thriller The Untouchables and war drama Casualties of War, the former earning him and Oscar and Golden Globe nod and the latter a Globe nod, as well as reuniting with Leone for Once Upon a Time in America and his first collaboration with British director Roland Joffé for the religious period drama The Mission, which earned him his second Oscar nom and first Globe win.
The ’90s would land him one more Oscar nod and on Golden Globe nod and one win for Barry Levinson’s neo-noir crime biopic Bugsy and Italian drama The Legend of 1900, with other notable works including Lorenzo’s Oil, In the Line of Fire, Wolf and Bulworth. The following decade would land him another Globe and Oscar nomination with the romantic dramedy Malèna and his first Oscar win with an Honorary Academy Award. This past decade would see the composer finally earn an Oscar for Best Original Score with Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, as well as his third Golden Globe win.

Ennio Morricone. You always know when it’s a Morricone score, even before you see his name. With just a few notes he evokes images of a whole genre. There aren’t any others like him. One of the titans is gone.

Where to even begin with iconic composer Ennio Morricone? He could make an average movie into a must see, a good movie into art, and a great movie into legend. He hasn’t been off my stereo my entire life. What a legacy of work he leaves behind. RIP. https://t.co/qZX6qE10ke

“Borderland is a vengeance fueled chase movie, fusing some pulse ticking action with a powerful message for our times. We’re thrilled that the script, driven as much by character as it is by plot, has attracted such a first-rate cast,” the Guard brothers said in a statement.

Moysey’s The Road to Balcombe Street novel, Borderland follows the story of an Irish paramilitary, Michael (Reynor), who witnesses the shooting of his pregnant wife at the hands of a SAS sergeant named Tempest (Boyega) when a border ambush goes wrong. When Tempest is sent back to London to lead a covert counter-terrorist operation, Michael joins a ruthless active service unit (ASU) wreaking havoc in the capital. For Michael, the mission is personal – to hunt down Tempest – and he’ll stop at nothing to avenge his wife’s death.

Since it was announced in 2018 that Marvel Studios has indeed finally ordered a solo Black Widow movie after so many years of development and fan interest, Marvel fans have been wondering the nature of Scarlett Johansson’s first solo MCU film, especially given her character’s fate in Avengers: Endgame. Their speculations continued to grow when Florence Pugh was cast as Yelena Belova, who is also known in the comics as Black Widow. Because of this, fans have been theorizing that the upcoming film might also be Marvel Studios’ way of introducing a new character that would take on the legacy of the titular Avenger throughout future MCU films.
RELATED: Black Widow Final Trailer Features Lots of New Footage
In a recent interview with Empire, director Cate Shortland has seemingly confirmed this theory by revealing that some new details about Black Widow and Yelena Belova’s future ahead of its November 2020 release.
“[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction,” Shortland said. “And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”
She also further revealed that the upcoming film will definitely be able to give Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff the proper farewell that she didn’t get in the last Avengers film. “In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral,” Shortland explained. “She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”
Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger. The film is expected to be set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, but before Avengers: Infinity War.
Black Widow will also feature a star-studded cast including Golden Globe nominee David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) as Alexei aka The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family) as Yelena Belova, Academy Award-winning actress Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason.

The movie was directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) from a script written by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle). Black Widow is set to release on November 6, 2020.

Writer Ed Solomon, whose name was anagrammed into Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey bad guy De Nomolos, shared a new behind-the-scenes image (via SuperHeroHype) from the upcoming Bill & Ted Face the Music. For the long-awaited sequel, it seems stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves would rehearse their scenes with the writers and director Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) first thing. Then they’d run it for the crew, and finally, the actors would go into hair and make-up
This behind-the-scenes image shows one of those first rehearsals. Most definitely not looking their ages, the actors — in matching T-shirts — seem to have their physicality right back where it used to be.
This is one of my favorite personal photos from the set of @BillandTed3. Following the official announcement of the Justice League Snyder Cut, director Zack Snyder continues to reveal new facts about the film including the death of Robin, who he recently confirmed as one of the Joker’s casualties. Because of this, a fan asked the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice filmmaker if he would have liked to see an interaction between Ben Affleck’s Batman and Jared Leto’s Joker. Snyder warmly responded by revealing that he has always supported Leto’s portrayal of the clown prince of crime.

With the confirmation of the long-awaited Snyder Cut, DC fans have also been hoping to have the chance to get to see David Ayer’s own cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad with Ayer teasing his dark and emotional take including Jared Leto’s whole performance of the Joker. Since its theatrical release, many fans were disappointed with Leto’s portrayal of the iconic DC villain because of his small part in the movie. His version was also previously anticipated due to being the latest incarnation of the Joker after 8 years since Heath Ledger’s critically-acclaimed performance in The Dark Knight.

The ball is firmly in Warner Bros. court on this one. It certainly bodes well that Ayer doesn’t seem to harbor any ill will toward the studio. Ayer has also said that there’s a lot more footage of Jared Leto’s Joker nestled somewhere in the WB archives. Regardless, there’s the matter of what kind of resources the studio is willing to give Ayer to realize his true vision of the film. Warner Bros. is reportedly giving Snyder an estimated $20-30 million to properly finish his Justice League cut.
Suicide Squad starred Will Smith as Deadshot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevinge as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who became an instant fan-favorite and is now one of the most popular DC characters. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, the film had still grossed over $726 million at the worldwide box officie.

In a parallel reality, fans would already have watched Black Widow and started gearing up for Marvel’s Eternals. The next movie in Phase 4 features, per Marvel Studios, “ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.” The movie eyes a February release at the moment, but the fate of movie theaters remains up in the air. Still, in a recent Hollywood Reporter roundtable of comedic actors, the usually very funny Kumail Nanjiani spilled some details about his more serious superheroic role in the project (via SuperHeroHype).
Nanjiani, who often appears in comedies as an amusingly annoying character, plays Kingo. Originally the comics had Kingo a Japanese samurai turned action star. Marvel Studios, however, reimagined him as a Pakistani Bollywood star. And Nanjiani consciously wanted him to embody the opposite of everything he’d done before. “I feel like we’re this group where we can be the model minority, so the smart nerds, or the exact opposite, terrorists, depending on what the project is,” he said.
RELATED: Gemma Chan Says That Marvel’s Eternals Has Wrapped
“Those are the two ends of the spectrum that we occupy and very little in between. I’ve gotten to play a nerd, so I wanted this guy to be cool. I’ve played weaklings, so I wanted this guy to be strong. Brown men have had to play terrorists, so I wanted this guy to be full of joy. So, really, this character for me was defined by what I didn’t want him to be.”
The actor also wanted Kingo to “look like someone who could take on the traditional Hollywood-looking superhero — someone who could take on Thor or Captain America,” he says. But while he pumped up and showed off his gym body online, he regrets that particular photo now. “You get a weird body dysmorphia when the whole world is concentrating on how you look,” he noted. “I became shallow. I got obsessed with how I look and then all I would see are what I perceive as flaws.”
Are you excited to see Nanjiani do the opposite of all his previous roles? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

In a recent interview with Variety, Marvel star Tessa Thompson revealed that the upcoming slate of Marvel films, aka Phase 4, will bring in a much more diverse ensemble.
RELATED: Anthony Mackie Says The Falcon & The Winter Soldier is Like a Six-Hour Movie
“I think in this next phase of Marvel, we’re really talking about what representation looks like in those spaces,” Thompson stated. “Because the truth is these movies travel globally in such huge ways, and if you can represent people that are of color, if you can represent people with disabilities, if you can represent the LGBTQIA community inside of these films, it’s a pretty big deal.”
“There’s millions and millions of people, particularly young people, that show up to the cinema. And I think if you can show them something that looks like them, they feel valued. Particularly inside of these narratives of the comic books, that’s what it’s all about. It’s that our differences make us special.”
Thompson’s Thor: Love & Thunder character, Valkyrie, will be portrayed as an openly gay woman in the upcoming film, while others Marvel flicks, such as Eternals, will feature openly gay characters.
“I’m really excited that we’re able to continue to push the bounds of that and that I’m able to do that with Valkyrie, because there’s so many cool queer characters in the comic books and they should have a place on-screen.”

Over the weekend, Zack Snyder responded to several questions on Vero in regard to the upcoming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and dropped several interesting tidbits. You can check out the full posts below, but we’ll break them down here as well.
What Snyder revealed about Justice League in his posts (per DR Movie News on Twitter):
1. The original Steppenwolf design will return
2. He is already deep in VFX work on the film
3. The upcoming release of Justice League will be 100% his vision with absolutely no compromises
4. We will likely get a new teaser before the upcoming DC FanDome on August 22
5. Junkie XL will return to score the film
6. Justice League will include more Knightmare sequences with Darkseid and Superman
7. Kevin Costner will likely return as Jonathon Kent for a brief cameo
RELATED: Jon Berg Responds to Ray Fisher’s Justice League Accusations
The most interesting of all of this information is the bit about compromise. After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to match Marvel’s The Avengers in terms of box office revenue, Warner Bros. insisted that Snyder lighten the tone of Justice League. As such, Snyder made compromises in order to appease studio heads. So, even if Snyder had released his film in 2017, it likely still would not have been his intended vision.
Now, with the freedom given to him by HBO Max, Snyder has full reign to release the Justice League he wanted to release all along. Whether it paves the way for future sequels and includes the darker bits he has teased about for years, or merely serves as a conclusion to a 3-part story remains anyone’s guess.
Snyder also replied to a lot of questions with winky emojis. He’s obviously teasing fans, or maybe there will indeed be a Green Lantern appearance; and a sequence of Superman destroying the world under Darkseid’s authority.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. No new footage will be shot, however.
Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Miller as The Flash, Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.
