More than three months after production had been temporarily shut down on Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings last March, Deadline is bringing word that Marvel Studios is reportedly preparing to resume its filming in Sydney, Australia at Fox Studios by the end of this month. If the studio’s planned safety and health measures would go without a hitch, the Simu Liu-led film will definitely be the first MCU film to be able to restart production.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be led by Canadian actor Simu Liu (Blood and Water, Taken), who is set to take on the titular hero in Marvel Studios’ first Asian superhero-led movie. Joining Liu are Golden Globe-winning actress Awkwafina (The Farewell) and renowned Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, who is portraying the role of The Mandarin. It was also reported that Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh was in talks for a new MCU character with Creed II star and professional heavyweight boxer Florian Munteanu also rumored to have joined the film as the secondary villain.
Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Zombieland 2, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse 2) wrote the script and Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) is attached to direct the project. Marvel’s goal with the film is to introduce a hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers.
Filming began in Australia earlier this year but was temporarily suspended due to the ongoing global pandemic. Originally scheduled for a February 2021 release, the film has now been pushed back to May 7, 2021.

Shang-Chi, also known as The Master of Kung Fu, was first introduced in the pages of Special Marvel Edition #15 back in 1973 after they’d failed to obtain the rights to the then-popular TV series Kung Fu, which starred David Carradine. A master of fighting, Shang-Chi eventually gains the ability to create an infinite number of replicas of himself. After Special Marvel Edition changed its name to The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu, the character went on to appear in issues of Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-in-One. He’s also been a member of The Avengers and Heroes for Hire, the latter alongside fellow kung fu masters Daughters of the Dragon.

It’s no secret David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was put through the studio wringer before it even began filming and in his latest social media revelation regarding his original cut, the 52-year-old writer/director revealed that the original big final boss fight in the film was set to be a parademon before Warner Bros. nixed the idea.

There was supposed to be a parademon boss fight – that got killed in prep so it was a boss fight with Incubus https://t.co/kWxbxgZR5o
— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) July 1, 2020
Ayer previously confirmed that parademons were set to be in the film and had a drastically different look in comparison to the ones that made their big-screen debut in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and his follow-up Justice League, but this new revelation confirms that Incubus, who had bizarrely little screen time for the “final big bad” in the theatrical cut, was never intended to be such.
The ball is firmly in Warner Bros. court on this one. It certainly bodes well that Ayer doesn’t seem to harbor any ill will toward the studio, nor with Gunn and vice versa. Ayer has also said that there’s a lot more footage of Jared Leto’s Joker nestled somewhere in the WB archives. Regardless, there’s the matter of what kind of resources the studio is willing to give Ayer to realize his true vision of the film. Warner Bros. is reportedly giving Snyder an estimated $20-30 million to properly finish his Justice League cut, but with Ayer recently confirming he wouldn’t need anywhere close to that to finish his version, many are questioning why not just allow him to go for it.

This year has seen a number of productions shut down around the globe, one of the most buzzed-about being Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Nightmare Alley, and in a recent interview with IndieWire, the Oscar winner has revealed he and his crew got 45 percent of the film shot before it was halted.

In looking back at early March, when new Searchlight Pictures owner Disney announced production had come to a halt on the psychological thriller, Del Toro revealed that he approached the studio first to ask about shutting it down prior to their asking.
“We reacted super fast, we proposed the studio to stop as opposed to being asked to stop,” del Toro said. “That saved us. Nobody to my knowledge in the cast or the crew got coronavirus. We were roughly 45 percent in. We were literally in the middle of a great scene. We went to lunch and talked to the studio and when we came back we said, ‘Everybody leave your tools and leave now.‘”
The 55-year-old filmmaker expressed his hope to return to shooting the film in the fall, keeping his “fingers crossed,” while also looking on the bright side as his stop-motion musical adaptation of Pinocchio is slowly getting back to shooting, even working on recording ADR for the latter in the meantime. For both productions, del Toro has also penned 80-page documents laying out safety protocols and ensuring they stay intact for when cast and crew return to sets.
“In stop-motion, you have many sets nearby one another in a warehouse like space,” del Toro said. “You can have 10 sets in one space. We had to create a protocol where we now space the sets a certain number of feet. We created different shifts so no one is exposed. In this moment, security is paramount. Health, safety is the number one concert. We got to get used to it. I don’t think we can go back to what we consider the old normal. Everything will be a little altered.”
Nightmare Alley, written by del Toro and Morgan, will be based on the novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham, previously adapted into a movie by Fox in 1947. The novel “follows the exploits of Stanton Carlisle, a ruthless hustler who learns the tricks of the carny trade and uses them to establish himself as a spiritual guru, preying on the wealthy and the weak.”

Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) will the star-studded cast that includes multi-award winning-actresses Cate Blanchett (Where’d You Go, Bernadette?), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) along with Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Mark Povinelli (Water for Elephants), David Strathairn (Billions), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water) and Holt McCallany (Mindhunter).
The 1947 movie starred Tyrone Power as an ambitious young con-man who teams up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the tables on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.
Nightmare Alley will be directed by Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro, who will also serve as a producer alongside J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment. Searchlight Pictures (formerly named Fox Searchlight) has worldwide distribution rights to the film.

Showtime has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming feature-length documentary The Go-Go’s focused on the all-female band of the same name, as well as revealing a premiere date of Saturday, August 1 at 9 p.m. EST. The trailer can be viewed in the player below!

An official 2020 Sundance Film Festival Selection, the film chronicles the first all-female band to play its own instruments, write its own songs and soar to No. 1 on the album charts. Featuring candid testimonies from the group members, Alison Ellwood’s documentary charts the meteoric rise to fame of a band that not only captured but created a zeitgeist.
The Go-Go’s are rooted in music history as not just a pop phenomenon but groundbreakers as well. Born out of the L.A. punk scene, Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar, keyboards and vocals), Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Gina Schock (drums), Kathy Valentine (bass and vocals) and Jane Wiedlin (guitar and vocals) didn’t play the part of bad girls – they were genuine punk rockers. Their 1981 debut album Beauty and the Beat, featuring the hits “Our Lips Are Sealed” (one of Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Pop Singles) and “We Got the Beat,” was one of the most successful debut albums of all time, No. 1 on the Billboard charts for six consecutive weeks and resulted in a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The Go-Go’s will release their first new recording in nearly 20 years, “Club Zero,” on July 31 on UMe. The band can be seen working on an early version of the song in the documentary.

Netflix has successfully closed the deal for the worldwide distribution rights to Oscar-winning filmmaker Aaron Sorkin’s timely drama film The Trial of the Chicago 7. According to Deadline, the deal between the streamer and producers Cross Creek is reportedly worth more than $50 million. The release date hasn’t been announced yet but it is expected to debut sometime before November just in time for the awards season.

Based on a true story, The Trial of the Chicago 7 follows protesters who disrupted the 1968 Democrat party convention with an anti-Vietnam war “carnival” that turned nasty. Demonstrators threw bricks, police responded with tear gas and the center of Chicago was engulfed in flames. Curfews only escalated the violence.
After the clashes, independent investigators blamed eight police officers and eight protesters including Hoffman, who had already disrupted the New York Stock Exchange with showers of fake money. The police were not charged but the protesters were accused of inciting a riot. One was jailed for contempt, leaving the seven to fight the charges.

It will also star Michael Keaton, William Hurt, Thomas Middleditch, John Carroll Lynch, Daniel Flaherty, Noah Robbins, Mark Rylance, J.C. MacKenzie and Max Adler, who also serves as an executive producer.
The film will also be executive produced by Matt Jackson. Marc Butan and Anthony Katagas. The Trial of the Chicago 7 will be produced by Oscar nominee Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, La La Land), Stuart Besser, and Tyler Thompson.

Jason Momoa has found a way into audience’s hearts with Aquaman and Game of Thrones and now he’s set his eye on a whole new demographic as he has signed on to voice Frosty the Snowman in a live-action/CGI hybrid film for Warner Bros, according to Deadline.
RELATED: Good Bad & Undead: Peter Dinklage & Jason Momoa Team for Action-Adventure
The film, which is being penned by David Berenbaum (Elf), will be a hybrid CG/live-action adaptation of the iconic Christmas character created by Walter Rollins & Steve Nelson for the 1950 song first recorded by Gene Autry & The Cass County Boy. Jon Berg and Greg Silverman of Stampede, who previously worked with Berenbaum on the Will Ferrell-starring Christmas classic, are set to produce alongside Geoff Johns of Madghost and Momoa.
“From his role as a fearsome count in a land of ice and fire to the oceanic success we all had with Aquaman, it felt only right to realize Jason this time out of snow,” Berg said in a statement.
Momoa previously worked with Berg and Silverman when the duo were senior executives at Warner Bros and helped architect the DC Extended Universe and its launching of the Aquaman franchise with James Wan behind the camera. A sequel is currently in development with pre-production set to begin sometime this year and a release date set for December 16, 2022 with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, co-writer of the first film, set to return as screenwriter and Wan being courted to return to helm.
“We know Jason’s as a true human being filled with love, compassion and a deep connection to ohana,” Silverman added in a statement. “All of which is the living spirit of Xmas and Frosty.”

Earlier this week, Ray Fisher, the actor who portrayed Victor Stone/Cyborg in Justice League, shared a Tweet in which he withdrew all public support of Joss Whedon. When Zack Snyder left Justice League to deal with a family tragedy, Whedon was brought in to re-write the script and finish helming the film. Prior to the movie’s release, Fisher called “a great guy,’ and praised him as Snyder’s choice to finish the film. However, Fisher escalated his criticism of Whedon today by accusing the director of abusive conduct on the set. He also accused former DC Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, and Jon Berg of enabling Whedon’s behavior.
Joss Wheadon’s on-set treatment of the cast and crew of Justice League was gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.
He was enabled, in many ways, by Geoff Johns and Jon Berg.

At press time, none of Fisher’s fellow Justice League cast members have chimed in about his latest comments. It will be interesting to see if they corroborate Fisher’s statement, or if they choose to refute it or remain silent.
Synder is currently working on his own cut of Justice League. It will hit HBO Max next year.
